Poweshiek County, IA

Poweshiek County is located in southeastern Iowa along Interstate 80 between Des Moines and Iowa City.  It was named for the Indian chief of the Fox tribe, Chief Poweshiek, who signed the treaty ending the Black Hawk War.  The county was originally a part of Keokuk County, later a part of Iowa County and then part of Mahaska county.  It was officially designated a county on April 3, 1848.

The first permanent settlers arrive in May 1843 and a steady stream of settlers followed.  Settlement of the county progressed from south to north.  Montezuma was chosen as the county seat in June 1848 and  the first court house was built that year.  In 1856 the present court house was built.  It is thought to be the second oldest courthouse still is use in Iowa and is currently on the National Register of Historic Places.

Deep River, IA

Deep River township, organized March 7, 1857, derived its name from the stream running through its northern part.  The river was not named for the depth of the water but for the depth of the ravine through which it flowed.  The first post office was established in 1852 and named Deep River.  In 1856 the town of Dresden, located about a mile east of the present town of Deep River, was platted.  The town of Deep River was established in 1884, when the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad was built and residents of Dresden moved to be near the railroad.  Deep River was incorporated during the summer of 1887.   Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deep_River,_Iowa
