Keokuk County, formed in 1837, is located in southeast Iowa and is bordered on the east by Washington County, on the south by Jefferson & Wapello counties, on the west by Mahaska county and on the north by Poweshiek & Iowa counties.  The county was named for the chief of the Sac Indians, who advocated peace with the white settlers. It opened for public settlement in May 1843 and was governed by Washington County until it became self-governed in1844.  Sigourney became it's county seat in 1856.  Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keokuk_County,_Iowa

White Oak Cemetery is located in Prairie Township, Keokuk County, Iowa one mile east and one and a half miles north of Thornburg on the east side of the north-south gravel road.  Map

On August 7, 1869 a meeting was held at the Johnston school house to organize a United Presbyterian Chruch, the South English United Presbyterian Church, with nine charter members. On May 13, 1871, W. C. Johnston and his wife, Margaret, deeded two acres of land one-half mile north of the Johnston school  house for a church building and cemetery.  In 1884, a new church was built on the west portion of this ground and the name of the church was changed from South English to White Oak.

On October 2, 1884, Margaret Jones gave a deed to the United Presbyterian Church of White Oak, which set apart the church grounds from the cemetery grounds.  A Quit Claim Deed was recorded Nov. 3, 1897 by J. M. & Lizzie Johnston; Sophia C. & Curtis S. Mooney; W. C. & E. B. Channell and Ellen C. & M. A. Hollingworth  to White Oak United Presbyterian Church of Prairie Township, Keokuk County, Iowa. It stated that the ground was to be used by said church for church and cemetery purposes only and when same ceased to be used for one or both of said purposes said land would revert back to them.

On March 19, 1925, there was filed in the Office of the County Recorder of Keokuk County, in Plat Book 3, page 366, a plat of White Oak Cemetery.  The real estate laid out in the plat was owned by the White Oak United Presbyterian Church. On June 12, 1905 this real estate was surveyed, laid off, and platted.

White Oak Cemetery is on level ground, fenced on all sides with an entrance gate and is well maintained.  The care is provided by perpetual care funds through the church and by township funds.  The church has regular services at the present time and the members of the congregation take great pride in keeping the church building and cemetery grounds in excellent appearance and service.  Source: White Oak Cemetery History and Cemetery Plat
