Harrison, the county seat of Boone County, is located in northwest Arkansas in the beautiful Ozark Mountains.  Indians were the first inhabitants of the area.  The first were probably "Bluff Dwellers", then later the Osage, a branch of the Sioux. The Shawnees, Quapaws and Caddo Indians were also familiar to the area.  About 1816 the Cherokee arrived.  They could not get along with the Osage and hostility erupted into a full scale Indian war. By the 1830's both tribes had been removed to Oklahoma.  The first white men were probably French hunters or trappers who followed the course of the White River.

Approximately 13,000 residents live in Harrison which is located 35 miles south of Branson, MO and 43 miles east of Eureka Spring, AR.  It's downtown lake, a beautifully renovated town square complete with hanging flower baskets and old-time whittlers relaxing on the park bench, has gained it national recognition as one of the "Best Small Towns in America"  All the major roads in Northwest Arkansas, US Highways 62, 65 and 412 as well as Arkansas Highway 7, intersect in Harrison.

Maplewood Cemetery, Harrison, AR
Maplewood Cemetery is located northeast of Harrison.  Take Hwy 43 E to Maplewood Rd.  The Mary Mother of God Catholic Church is located on the corner.  It is the showplace of the Ozarks in the fall, when the Maple trees in the cemetery grounds glow with red, orange and yellow leaves.

NOTE: My parents are both buried in Maplewood Cemetery.  My mother passed away Jan. 4, 1957 at the age of 50.  It is sad when someone so young is taken from a family.  She never got to attend any of her children's weddings or see and hold any of her grandchildren and Ray was left a widower with 3 teenagers ranging in age from 13 to 19 and an older daughter at home.  He passed away July 6, 1995 -- 38 years later.  It was a very emotional experience for me when several years later I finally had the opportunity to visit my mother's grave. We live closer now and return every year and decorate their graves.
