One account says Bartholomew died a few years previous to Elizabeth. He died intestate. He resided at in Hunterdon County, New Jersey. Bartholomew is a double ancestor. His daughter and son married siblings.

Bartholomew and Elizabeth had seventeen children. Information from Helen Rowell indicates eleven of the seventeen are known. One additional child is known, however, from information furnished by Patt Keats. That child is Sarah.

A Jeremiah, Joseph, and Elijah Thatcher are all on page 782 of Stryker's "Revolutionary Registers". Six of the children are unaccounted for and Elijah could be one.

Bartholomew's name first appears in the inventory of the estate of Andrew Heath of Hopewell Township, Hunterdon County, October 3, 1720. He appears in the Tax List of Maidenhead (now Lawrence) Township in 1722, and he took part in twelve sessions of the Hunterdon County Court of Common Pleas, 1731-1733. He is still found in reference to Maidenhead Township in 1741, and in 1764 he witnessed the signing of the will of Margaret Hull and was the administrator of the estate of a Mr. Marshall of Kingwood, Hunterdon County, New Jersey.

A newspaper account in the Pennsylvania Gazette (Philadelphia) on 15 Aug 1771 states that Mrs. Elizabeth Thatcher, age 87, widow of Bartholomew, died at Kingwood on 29 Jul 1771 leaving 17 children, 118 grandchildren, 133 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild.

Richard Thatcher1

Richard Thatcher, Sr. made his will no. 158, October 13, 1690 and he died between then and January 3, 1690/1691 when his four daughters were brought to Orphans Court, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Negative proofs at Swarthmore & Friends Library, London, England.

Richard came to Bucks County, Pennsylvania as one of the first customers of William Penn's lands. He received two city lots in Philadelphia for being one of the first fifteen purchasers.

There is another Richard Thatcher from England that married a (Jane) Jeane Stevens. Research by Helen Rowell indicates that Common Pleas Court records of Bucks County, Pennsylvania places our Thatchers there in 1682 and they figured in court cases two or three years later. The Richard Thatcher and Jane Stevens of Chester County produced no Bartholomew in three succeeding generations.

One interesting theory developed by H.J. Leimbach and sent to me by Helen Rowell regarding Richard goes like this. The second Richard Thatcher whose will #158 was made in 1690. First how do we know he was born in 1620 because I've seen no record of this birth date. Let's suppose instead he was born in 1640 or so, in which case he still could be son of Richard Thatcher and Joan Skegglethorpe and married Mary Bush in 1670, after which he had second set of children (say 4 daughters Sarah, Rachel, Martha and Mary; probably last about 1684 before going to Pennsylvania. This would mean the first marriage could have been unrecorded as was birth of sons Richard, Bartholomew, Joseph, and Amos who could have been born in period of 1660's. Of course Richard still could have been born as early as 1620, but we have no record of his birth and obviously could not be son of Richard and Joan or married Mary Bush. So I do not believe that the Mary Thatcher who had trouble with her husband 1675-1680 is mother-in-law to Jane Thatcher above. It seems more likely that they, Mary and Jane, married cousins RICHARD. And of course and by coincidence there could be another Mary Thatcher (of which no record exists). Maybe wife died in childbirth of last daughter Mary about 1634 in England. Now to the Richard Thatcher in America; we know the following. He got land grant of 1000 acres from William Penn in 1682, but he did not come with Penn on the Welcome in 1682. The first record I can find is that he was on a Bucks County Jury in 1685 (from Extracts of Minute Book of Common Pleas and Quarter Session Courts of Bucks County, Pennsylvania 1684-1730). Also from this minute book in 1686, Richard Thatcher complained that a proposed road from Wrightstown to ferry house over to Burlington (New Jersey) would run through his land. Then beginning in 1684 we find repeated records of trouble by Richard Jr. who was guilty of stealing a hog and abusing his father in 1689 for which he was whipped bare back 21 stripes. In 1689 Richard and Bartholomew were witnesses. 1690 the will of Richard Thatcher delivered. 1691 judgement against Richard, 1692 Bartholomew, Joseph and Amos Executors. He was married to Mary MORRIS. Richard apparently had two wives. Both were deceased by will.
