Albert Henry Buerckner was born in 1895 in Deniliquin, New South Wales.

Albert enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force for World War I on 13January 1916 and became a member of the 20th Battalion unit at Broadmeadows, New South Wales. His World War I Service No. was 1658. At the time of enlistment, Albert's trade was a labourer and a cook. He was five feet seven inches and 10 pounds nine ounces.

On 2 May 1916, Albert and his battalion left Sydney aboard the Hororata bound for Plymouth, England. He arrived there three months later and was taken to battle in Rouen, France. There, in November, he was shot in the arm and chest and was taken to the field hospital. He was eventually taken back to Birmingham, England, on the Hospital Ship St George, which arrived on 4 December 1916. He was discharged from the 1st Southern General Hospital five days later.

The following month Albert returned to duty, but sadly he was shot again - this time in the back and right arm. He returned to hospital in Weymouth, England, and from there he returned to Australia aboard H.T. Militates in May 1917. He was later discharged as being medically unfit.

Albert arrived back in Deniliquin later in July 1917 where his family were living. The following year he married Ivy Alice Carr in New South Wales. On 18 September 1918, Ivy gave birth to a son, Albert James Buerckner, in Deniliquin.

Albert returned from the war to his trade as a cook. In January 1937

he was working in Narranderra, New South Wales as a shearers' cook.

He died in 1948 in Holbrook, New South Wales.
