INFORMATION ABOUT WALTER WHIPPLE The following information about Walter Whipple was provided by Beverly Huckins, with additional information supplied by Neal McLain.
Walter Whipple is the son of Thomas Whipple and Lydia Gates Whipple; the husband of Susan Donaldson Whipple; and the father of Lothario D. Whipple.
Walter Whipple, originally from Connecticut, came to Michigan by way of New York. He first showed up in Raisin Township in 1824; after a short stay, he returned to New York, but returned again to Michigan in 1825. During the next few years, he purchased four parcels of land in Raisin Township (details; map).
Fulton Jack migrated to Raisin Township in 1831, about five years after Walter Whipple. Before migrating to Michigan, they had both been residents of Livingston County, New York, so they probably knew each other before they migrated to Michigan.
Fulton Jack's new farm in Michigan was adjacent Walter Whipple's, indicating that they were neighbors. Further evidence that they were neighbors is provided by the 1840 census, which lists Fulton Jack and Walter Whipple consecutively.
Sometime after Walter arrived in Michigan, his father, Thomas Whipple, accompanied by his third wife, Rhoda Merrill Whipple, also came to Michigan (Thomas's first wife, Lydia Gates Whipple Walter's mother had died previously, and is buried in New Hampshire).
In 1833, Walter Whipple's father, Thomas Whipple, and his wife Rhoda Merrill Whipple, both died. They were buried in the southeast corner of Fulton Jack's farm, the first graves in what would become the McLain Cemetery. In subsequent years, Walter's wife, Susan Donaldson Whipple; his father-in-law, Lothario Donaldson; and his son, Lothario D. Whipple, also died, and were buried nearby.
After the death of his wife and son, Walter sold his property and moved away, although he apparently remained in the area. He died in 1882, and is buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Adrian with his second wife and children.
