William Barker

William Barker was my 3 x great Grandfather. Baptised on the 16 January 1830 at Thornton Steward ( near Leyburn) to John, a labourer and Elizabeth of Thornton Steward.

1851 census shows - East, West Appleton -
East Appleton Farm
William Barker, 21, unmarried farm servant born Thornton Steward. Head of household is farmer of 240 acres Edward Ellerton.

In 1853 he was living at Spennithorne and employed as a servant prior to his marriage to Harriett Edgar on May 14th at Leyburn Registry Office .

In 1865 was living in Harmby Yorkshire and employed as a farm labourer.

William and Harriett had at least 6 children:-
 
bulletEllen Barker born c 1853 in Spennithorne, Yorkshire. 1871 census for Leyburn shows an Ellen Barker,18, born Spennithorne, nurse at Railway Street Leyburn, working for Bank Manager Edwin Beetham, wife Eleanor and children Eleanor, 1 and James H aged 6months.

Was employed as a dressmaker in 1881 and living with her mother at 76 Model Place, Darlington.

William had been employed as a horse manager prior to his death according to daughter Mary Jane's marriage certificate.
He died on the 10th of November 1875 at Harmby, Yorkshire aged 45 years. the cause of death is listed as being ' Typhoid fever - 14 days, congestion of lungs - 3 days. Certified by R Metcalfe M.D' A Henry Freear of Harmby was present at the death. William was listed as being a farm labourer.
