29 April 2014 Thomas Boddy (snr) 29 April 2014 Thomas was christened at
St Cuthbert's ,Darlington on June 15th 1828, son of John
Body and Mary Connon. He married Margaret
Ibitson on the 21st July 1849.Thomas was employed as a tanner. He could not
write - he signed his marriage certificate with the sign of a cross. The 1851 census shows:-
1861 census shows - In January 1865 was
living at 9 Church Street, Darlington when daughter Margaret was baptised but by
the December of that year was living at 5 Church Street at the time of daughter
Ruth's baptism. By 1881 Thomas was
living at 4 Temperance Place, Darlington and still worked as a tanner. The 1891 census shows Thomas as an inmate at Darlington Workhouse. His wife and family were living at 6 Temperance Place. Union Workhouse, Darlington
An article in the Northern Echo, dated Wednesday 11th January 1893 reads: Neglectful Darlington Husbands At the Darlington Police Court on Tuesday, Thomas Boddy, who said he was 65 years of age, and employed at Messrs Child & Co’s Tannery in Parkgate, was charged with neglecting to comply with an order from the magistrates to pay the Darlington Union 3s per week towards the maintenance of his wife. Mr C H Leach, clerk to the Guardians, said the defendant’s wife received 3s per week from the Union, and on October 24th the magistrates made an order on defendant to pay 2s per week, but although he had been in regular employment he had not paid a farthing. Defendant had promise to pay the arrears, but had failed to do so. Defendant said if they would allow him time he should try to pay what was owing. He admitted having been at work, but he only earned what kept himself. He was sent to gaol for one month’s imprisonment.
The 1901 census shows Thomas at the Working Mans Home, Clay Row, Darlington, aged 72, along with 111 others, whilst his wife, Margaret, was living at 6 Temperance Place, Darlington. Margaret died in 1898 of due to chronic bronchitis, aged 61. Thomas died on the 20th of May1903 at the Working Mans Home in Clay Row, Darlington, aged 70 years. The cause of death was ' mitral regurgitation'. His Granddaughter, Sarah Barras of Jackson's Yard ,Darlington was in attendance and registered the death. Thomas was buried at Darlington's West Cemetery, plot K 4S 122, on unconsecrated ground, on the 22nd of May 1903. The ceremony was performed by the Reverend J M Hamilton.
