William
Meaney (1896-1915) Hugh Meaney and Martha Rogan named their fifth son William. William Meaney was born 2nd January 1896 at Dree Dromara[1]. The birth was registered by his mother on 24th February. At
the outbreak of WW1 William tried to join an Irish regiment but was refused as
he was too young. He travelled to Scotland and joined the Kings Own Scottish
borderers[2]
at Dumfries. 1849
Private William Meaney of 1/5 Battalion K.O.S. Borderers was killed in action on
12th July 1915 in the Dardanelles during WW1[3]. He
is remembered on either panel 84 to 92 or 220 to 222 on the Helles Memorial[4]
