  1. Marriage license and record, Joseph Pease and Sarah Wallace, received from Warren County, IL, Dec 1999
  2. Death certificate, Sarah Wallace Pease, wife of Joseph Pease, received from Warren Co., IL, Dec 1999.
  3. Correspondence, Gary Bland, establishing through a separate line the parentage of Benjamin Franklin Wallace and his siblings. Original source was a researcher in Huntingdon Co., PA, who was working from a compiled source that was drawn from original records that no longer exist or that she was unable to find.
  4. Correspondence, Nancy Perry, corroborating Benjamin Wallace and Emeline Porter marriage through a different line.
  5. 1850 census, Huntingdon County, PA. Shows Benjamin age 31, Emeline age 24, 3 of their children, and an unknown child named Robert Thompson living with them. Received via correspondence from Terry More.
  6. 1860 census, Warren Co., IL, shows Benjamin age 40, Emeline age 32, eight children (including one that shows up in no other records we have), her brother John, and several other Wallace families in the same county at that time. Also records other Porter families.

PORTER FAMILY

  1. Death certificate, John Porter, father of Emeline Porter, received from Warren Co., IL Jan 2000.
  2. 1860 census, Warren Co., IL, John Porter, age 36, and family. Appears to be the same John but needs verification.
  3. Genealogy chart and file submitted for the Porter family by Nancy A. Perry, with details about John Porter. 18 pp.
  4. State of Illinois Public Land Tracts Sales Archives, records for purchase of land in 1837 by Emeline Porter. See Wallace for a correlation. These two records don’t make sense to me since I have records showing the Benjamin and Emeline lived in PA at this time, yet they’re both recorded as purchasing land in Illinois in 1840. Perhaps they purchased it in advance of moving it, or the dates were recorded incorrectly and it’s actually 1850 or 1860?
  5. "The First Porter" (compiled by Virginia Helland Ash. Received via Frances Carrier)
Also includes Family of James and Sarah Wray Porter
  6. Family of John and Matilda Steel Porter
    Received from Wanda Shult Austin.

UNKNOWN CONNECTION

The names are familiar, but who are these people? Mysteries to resolve in the future.

  1. Ships record, Java, 15 July 1853, showing a William Wallace age 70 and an Andrew Wallace, age 50, emigrating from Scotland to NY. This could be our Lew Wallace connection of two brothers coming to America. Needs more research to substantiate. This seems late for William to be emigrating, though, and it’s probably just a coincidence.
  2. State of Illinois Public Domain Land Tracts Sales Archives, records for purchase of land in 1840s by John Shult. I believe this is probably Peter Johann Shult, brother to Hons, because several of that generation went by their middle names, but this isn’t proven.
  3. Civil war records for a John Shult and a William Shult, from Illinois, but relationship is unknown. Likely to be relatives.
  4. “Shult-Singletary family” – partial listing from a gedcom file that lists three members of a Shult family in Ghent, NY in the 1860s. Relationship unclear, but several distant members of the family have told me they have roots in NY, so this may be a branch of the family.
  5. The Constitutional Gazette, Wed. Aug 9, 1775, lists a Mr. Shult living in New Windsor, NY, who operated a boat or ferry of some kind and captured a prisoner who was tarred and feathered. Relationship unknown.
  6. The Staunton Spectator, Mar 01, 1859, lists a William Shult in several locations. Relationship unknown.
  7. Baptismal Records of the Holsapel Family in Vedder’s Church, Gallatin, Columbia County, New York, 1796 – 1830, lists a Henry Shult as having lands neighboring the family in this document. Relationship unknown.
  8. “Wallace Family Genealogy,” chart of Lew Wallace’s ancestors, from blueprints and letters belonging to John and Louise Wallace, copied from Crawfordsville Public Library, Crawfordsville, IN. Compiled by Patrick Jay Overman.
  9. Misc. genealogical data about David Wallace, Andrew Wallace, and their trees. Charts, biographical sketches, handwritten cemetery notes, land purchase records, articles, and mortality records. Not sure if any of it is relevant to our tree except through unsubstantiated rumors.
  10. Handwritten notes on the six Wallace clans in Scotland, the four relatives that survived William Wallace (re: Braveheart).
