  Emery Meilleur

Emery Meilleur was born May 2, 1912, in Fisher Branch, the fifth child of Ovila and Zepherina Meilleur and the first child born in Canada to that pioneering family of Fisher Branch.

As a child and adolescent, his life revolved around school. The church, helping with the operation of the family farm and pursuing an innate mechanical ability which later saw him as the chief operator of one of the first internal combustion engines in the district, the McCormick-Deering W-30 which he operated extensively for breaking land and providing the power for a threshing machine for his father and the neighbourhood. This mechanical ability led him to dabble in the repairing of clocks and radios. I can vividly recall that satisfied look on his face when the clock tick-tocked or the radio blared forth, tempered by a puzzled frown, contemplating a small number of screws, bolts or other parts that he left over after re-assembling (with no apparent need in the first place), as the repaired product could generally be counted upon to give as good a service as when it originally came off the store keeper's shelf!

He had worked as a young man in a lumber camp in the Fort Francis area and for farmers in Somerset and Carman, Manitoba, and Oklee, Minnesota, USA. In 1938, he wed Leontine Carriere, a teacher who taught school for some years at the North Meridian School. He purchased and started to clear the land on the quarter immediately across the Meridian from his father's homestead. Four years later, he was renowned as a grower of certified alfalfa seed taking great pride in the seed inspectors report of no noxious weeks in his fields. During this period, he also owned and operated the only sawmill for miles around, producing much of the rough sawn lumber which went into the construction of the neighbourhood buildings.

His later life was characterized by services to his community, serving many years as a member and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the local school. He is best remembered however, for this willingness to help a neighbour in need due to accident, illness or whatever calamity had befallen. In winter, he was an institution to the Meridian district when roads being impassable to cars, he kept his Ferguson tractor operational and thus was the life-line of the area. Farmes along the route to town had the assurance that regardless of the weather, Emery could be counted upon for a lift into town to pick up supplies and the weekly mail.

He and Leontine raised a family of seven children of whom only one is presently residing in Fisher Branch. He passed away August 15, 1977 doing what he loved the most in life - harvesting yet another crop - the fruit of the sweat of his brow and God's bounteous blessings.

Léontine Carrière Meilleur

Born in St.Adolphe in 1910, I grew up with seven sisters, two brothers, and my loving parents - William and Josephine Carrier.

Early in life, teaching became my goal, which I realized after completing my studies in 1928 at the convent in St. Adolphe, which was also able to offer a fuller scope of education in music, vocal training, drama and concerts; to entertaining many visitors, be it a trustee, an inspector or a premier.

My teaching days began in 1929 and ended in 1974, during which time I devoted some thirty years in the profession, in St. Adolphe, the North Meridian School, Sylvan, Fisher Branch High and Elementary, not forgetting the Up-granding class of 1967, at the Ukrainian National Home.

Married life brought other major occupations. Most important, was raising our seven children who needed my presence at home in their early childhood. We enjoyed those years of a through family life.

Acquiring more farmland got us more deeply involved in farming. Our growing sons and daughters proved themselves invaluable as farmhands, machine operators, housekeepers, as well as in gardening.

Years went by and gradually the children left and then settled down away from home.

Soon it was time for me to retire, hoping to live many more years with Emery in our farmhouse, to enjoy our children and fifteen grandchildren. Three years later in 1977, I was left widow.

And life goes on; I am now alone in town, close to kind neighbours and friends and blessed with good health. Leisure time means doing reading, knitting, crocheting and crossword puzzles, which is a good pastime, away from housekeeping and the realities of life. It works wonders for me.
