Ardleigh is mentioned in 'Domesday Survey,' and is a parish and railway station on the Eastern Union Railway, in the Hundred and union, in Rochester Diocese, Colchester archdeanery, deanery of Tendring, rural deanery of Ardleigh, and is in the Colchester county court district, 4½ miles north of Colchester,  and 3½ south east from Manningtree, 26 north-east from Chelmsford, 12½ south-west from Ipswich, 16 from Harwich steamboat station, 39 from Bury, and 55½ from London, on the road to Manningtree. The area is 4,905 acres and the population in 1861 was 1,580. The assessment of real property to the Income Tax was, in 1848, £8, 428 9s. 4d. The living is a discharged vicarage, tithe rent-charge £380, with residence; is in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and is held by the Rev. James Todd. The church of the Virgin Mary consists of a nave, with north and south aisles and chancel, with a very handsome tower. Here is also a chapel for Wesleyans. The fair is held on the 29th September.  A farm called Wrabness was devised by William Littlebury, in 1571, for teaching poor boys in this parish. At Crockleford Heath, in this parish, is a school for boys and girls, supported by Lady Georgina Rebow.
