The Crown

Ipswich Road, Ardleigh

This alehouse was built before 1769 and is still a popular public house today. It is on the Ipswich Road, Ardleigh. In 1777 Thomas Fenton was the occupier, he was born in 1746. He was still living there as innkeeper in 1803. In 1796 he was living at the Crown with his daughter Martha (born 1767), her husband Jonathan Diaper (born 1767) and his grandchildren Martha (born 1793) and Jonathan (born 1794). He had 4 servants: Hannah Hiskey (b.1782), John Hailes (b.1771), Steven Diaper (b.1767) and Daniel Mann (b.1782).
