Churchwardens
Churchwardens role came into existence in the medieval times and were guardians of the parish church. Two churchwardens were elected for a year by the vicar and parishioners, in some places elected by the vestry. Their role was mainly concerned with the upkeep of the church, administration of parish charities and arranging the baptisms of foundling children or the burials of people who lived elsewhere and died in the parish. The churchwardens could also summon parishioners to the church courts. These offences included failing to attend church and blasphemy. In Ardleigh the vestry meetings were held on the first Monday morning of the month. Usually at one of two inns - the King's Head and the Lion.
