Fighter Wing Cited for Salerno Action

AN ADVANCED AIRBASE -- For their gallantry in action on the Salerno plains two days after the Allied landing, 38 officers and men of a fighter wing and attached units have been cited. Wing headquarters during this action was well in advance of Allied artillery and, in the words of one officer, "pretty damn close to Jerry's artillery." From this forward position the wing achieved a new high in close-support by hitting enemy objectives in 10 to 30 minutes after the request was received from the Army.
