If you've read this far you may wonder about my memory concerning dates and events. I've used my own three inch pile of letters home, carefully saved by mother; my war orders (201 file); books, such as Eisenhower's "Crusade in Europe" and Breuer's "Operation Torch"; a number of War Department publications; and saved newspapers and magazines to jog my memory. This is not meant to be a history text, but was written to allow my descendants and friends to view one man's life in tough times. Maybe this will help you to better understand one man and what he did for five years, 45 years ago.

For mistakes I apologize.

Gard Friedlander

November 1990.
