48. John Elias Overstreet was born 1 in 1838 in Mississippi. He died 2 in 1877. He married 3 Susan (Fanny) Williams before 1864 in South Carolina. [Parents]

Since both parents died of smallpox, the children were sent to John Williams, their maternal uncle. John Elias b 1838-1842, GA, did not fight in civil war. Had no slaves and apparently had no desire to fight.

I served as Justice of the Peace in Beat 2, Wayne County, Ms for a while in 1963. I finished out my dad's (Ernest Lewis O) term after his death. He served for 8 years, filling the remainder of another's term and two elections. His dad William Henry served in Jones County for some time. His dad John Elias also served in Jones County and Dad always told me that Jacob (b1810 GA, Braswell's son) had served in Jones or Wayne. dave o

51. Dorcas A. Boutwell 1 was born 2 about 1817 in Mississippi. [Parents]

Alice Dunivan, nee Moore, b VA told me the story of the wagon train (in VA) being attacked by Indians while the train was on a pit stop. One woman and a child were too far from the wagons to get back. They crawled into a hollow long and spent the night.

Next AM they were attacked by a pack of wolves while following the wagon tracks. The woman picked up the child and ran. When the wolves were almost on them she pulled some clothing from the girl and the wolves stopped to tear at it. The woman continued running and following the same procedure when needed. The train had sent some men back and they rescued the woman and child. Alice told me the child was a great (how ever many back) grandmother of hers. I do not know the girls name but it probably was not Moore.

There is a similar story in our family. The story came thru Dorcas Boutwell Landrum, my great grandma.

My dad once told me about how Dorcas came to MS on a wagon train and met/married Jim Landrum. He thought she was a Moore. The Boutwells in Jones/Wayne Counties MS say she was not a Boutwell but traveled with them. Neither the Landrums nor the Boutwells have been able to establish her parentage. She was reputed to have been the most beautiful (see where my
kids and I get our good looks?) woman EVER to set foot in MS and the meanest. Boutwells and Landrums seem to have come from the Middle Atlantic states/colonies. DaveO
