Sun., Jan. 1, 1893
Fair. Retired this a.m. at 2 o�clock, from last night�s �pleasures.� I went to Sunday School, and straightened my books for the past year. Went calling this eve, with Elbert Dunlap, to Edmonds�, Wheeler�s, and Jeter�s, to see Peyton who had come down from Malta Bend. I took Miss Katie Brown, who is visiting Gussie Edmonds, to Church tonight, and, afterwards, took a walk to both ends of the corner and back. Miss Katie is a real cute, sweet, girl! (The MO River blocked here on Christmas Day, 1892)
Mon., Jan. 2.
Cloudy. I put away Xmas goods today. Elbert left for Kansas City this eve. I was out collecting all evening. I walked over home with Miss Emma Wheeler this eve, as I took a bundle to Mrs. Mertens. I led the Epworth League Meeting tonight. Had the pleasure of taking the Misses Gussie Edmonds and Katie Brown to our League tonight. Harrison Wheeler came up after we got home, so we had quite a nice time.....you know it!!!
Tue., Jan. 3.
Cloudy. It has been spitting snow most all day long. I was going to take Miss Katie home this eve, but weather was too bad. Put out a remnant counter this morning. I had the pleasure of taking Miss Emma Wheeler to the Odd Fellows Supper at Mertens� Hall tonight. The Band played for them. We went up to Dr. Edmonds� tonight and gave Misses Gussie and Katie �somewhat� of a serenade (and I got the card!)... Cold as thunder out.

Wed., Jan. 4.
Pretty. Misses Gussie Edmonds and Susie Hawkins left this morning for school, in Mexico (Mo.). Today has been just a lovely day....so pretty and warm. I took Miss Katie B. home to Fairville this eve, leaving here at 1:50 o�clock, and returning at 6:10. Had quite a nice trip. I brought Miss Katie�s parasol back with me to fix for her. Roads muddy. I went down to the Methodist Prayer Meeting tonight. I put camphor in my clothes that I packed away tonight.

Thurs., Jan. 5.
Clear. I got an order from Walter Cook this morning, so I filled it, and mailed it this eve. Today has been very dull and turning very cold. I went through the heavy boots this eve, upstairs, and emptied six-boxes. Jim Wheeler brought me a note from Miss Emma this eve. I wrote down the list of Christmas goods on "invoice book" tonight. Made off the list of names for the party Mr. Jeter is going to give Peyton and I on the 10th. Wrote to Frank Taylor.
Fri., Jan. 6.
Cloudy. Cleaned and straightened upstairs this morning. I cut-off, and carried, carpet up to Mrs. Shelton�s this morning. I received this diary, this morning, from Elbert, who got it in Kansas City for me. I took a rug over to Dr. Wheeler�s this eve, at 2:30 o�clock.......saw �Emma,� too! Went to Band practice tonight, just before going to Church. The Presbyterians are having preaching at the Methodist Church now, for a week. I went down tonight for the first sermon.
Sat., Jan. 7.
Cloudy. Today has been exceedingly dull! It has been cold and cloudy, also spitting some snow. The Band didn�t get to play. I collected $7.50 for the Band today. As trade was dull, we got to close early, so I got to hear the Presbyterian Preacher again. I like him ever-so-much. I commenced writing in this book tonight....that is, started it from notes I had saved until I received it. Goodnight!
Sun., Jan. 8.
Pretty. I went to Sunday School, then to the Presbyterian preaching this morning at the Methodist Church. I wrote a letter to Miss Lilly Conway this eve. Got a letter from Frank Taylor today. I had my photo taken this eve, on small 4 x 4 cards. I called to see Miss Laura Carpenter this eve from 4 to 6:15 o�clock. Went over to see Miss Emma Wheeler tonight, and we went to the Methodist Church to hear Bro. Millstone, the grand-Presbyterian Preacher. He had a full-house! No one over the road tonight, but me!!! Ahem!!
Mon., Jan. 9.
Bright. I went through the hats, caps, lace-curtains, boots and shoes, jeans-pants, and overalls department�s today (upstairs). Went over to the schoolhouse today, and invited a few that I hadn�t seen, out to our party tomorrow night at Mr. Jeter�s. Went to our Epworth League Meeting tonight at 6 o�clock, on account of our Presbyterian Meeting, which is now going on. After Church, I walked over home with Miss Emma. Bro. Ginn got a dispatch that his father, in VA, was dying. He and family left at once, this eve.
Tue., Jan. 10.
Hazy. I got a nice little letter from Miss Katie this morning. She can�t come to the party. Peyton Jeter came down this eve and brought three girls to the party tonight. He is going with Miss Flora tonight....Ha!.. Ha!.. Ha!.. Ha! I have been working in the wallpaper dept. all day. I took Miss Emma Wheeler to the party tonight. We went to the Presbyterian preaching, first, tho. There was a large crowd at the party tonight, and we all had a �grand-royal-time!� It didn�t break-up until half-past 12 o�clock.
Wed., Jan. 11.
Bright. It is now 2 o�clock, and 15-minutes, and Mr. Jacob Greenabaum has just killed himself, by a No. 38-caliber, blowing his brains out! We got in 66 boxes of new hats this morning, so I have been working on them all day. Frank Brown and Miss Willie Parrish will marry this eve, at 2:30 o�clock, in Marshall. The Presbyterian Preacher preached his last sermon to us tonight. We had a �session� after Church tonight, and raised $45. (I gave $F�) Walked home with Miss Emma from Church. Syd Taylor and self stopped-in and saw the corpse as we came by.
Thurs., Jan. 12.
Bright. It snowed a little today. I stenciled 65-hat-boxes, and cut wallpaper samples and put in book today. Mr. Jacob Greenabaum�s remains were placed in the cold and silent tomb, this eve, at 3:30 o�clock. Services, at house, by Bro. W. M. Bell. Miss Lolly Kieffer and Mr. Owen Peck were married this eve, at home, at 2:30, by Bro. Bolton. Will Kieffer took Miss Emma down. Our Epworth League �entertainment� practiced tonight at Mertens� Hall. After it was over, I walked over home with Miss Emma Wheeler......you know it!!!
Fri., Jan. 13.
Four-degrees below, and cloudy. I put out an exhibit of hats this eve, and also printed a sign for the front. There was a �candy-pulling� over at Mrs. Jno. Burress� tonight. Quite a crowd went over, but I was not expected. Miss Emma went over. I went down to Mrs. Miller�s, after the Band practiced, to a �charade-party,� where we spent a very pleasant evening. I tried �second-alto� tonight for the first time. I believe I�ll like it better than I did �second-tenor,� but there is no-telling! Sheaffer is here today.
Sat., Jan. 14.
Fair and cold. Today has been a gloomy, cold, dull, day! Trade has been very quiet. I mailed two newspapers today.....one to (sister-in-law) Sunnie Myers, and the other to (sister) Lina Hudson. As I was going to supper tonight, I met Miss Emma Wheeler, so I turned around and walked home with her. I guessed 247 �seeds-in-the-punkin�, at Bishops, for organ, and there were 241. I sold my guesses, tho, to Mr. Jeter, for 10-cents, just before they were counted!!
Sun., Jan. 15.
Clear. Went to Sunday School. Then George Taylor and self went down to Lem and Mary�s this morning. I wrote a letter to Elbert this morning, before dinner. Also wrote a letter to Fred Sibley, Walter Cook, and Bro. Dobbins, at Marshall. Went to our Missionary Meeting this eve, and read a piece. Went over to see Miss Emma this eve, and we went to Church tonight and heard Bro. King, presiding elder of Methodist Church. I spent such a sweet evening with Miss Emma tonight. She had ice-cream and cake.....it was awfully nice, let me tell you!!!
Mon., Jan. 16.
Clear. I commenced making a zephyr-case this morning. Received a letter from Miss Lilly C., this a.m......also an invitation to Miss Anna Guthrey�s party on the 20th. I went to League tonight, and, after it was over, I walked home with Miss Emma. I wrote a letter tonight to the United States Chemical Co., Chicago......also a few lines of regret to Miss Anna Guthrey. Today, dull and cold.
Tue., Jan. 17.
Bright. I finished my zephyr-case and put it up today.....also changed the saxony dept., too. The boss was well-pleased with my carpenter-work, and also my plans for it. Today has been a real bright and pretty day, but trade awful dull. The League �entertainment� practiced tonight. O!.. The fun we did have!!! Miss Emma looked awful cute in her costume! I walked over home with her after we were through practicing.....ahem!!!
Wed., Jan. 18.
Bright. Mr. Jeter and I commenced on the review today, with 8-books ahead of us. Today has been somewhat quiet. There was a party at Jno. Burruss� tonight (Mattie�s). Woods and Geo. Taylor went, but I wasn�t expected. I went down to Prayer Meeting tonight. After it was over I came down to the Store with Iona Burns, for some �blue-calico� for League. Then I walked over home with her. Loafed with Syd Taylor awhile tonight.
Thurs., Jan. 19.,BR> Pretty. The League Entertainment Committee met at the Hall this eve at 2:30, to fix Hall. (I was one). We had quite a nice time! I went down to Miller�s after a curtain, and also walked over home with Miss Emma, this eve, after some curtains, too. I went back over, tonight, after her, to practice again at Hall. Miss Ruth had popcorn for us, too......you know it! I took invoice of �Smith & Stoughton� goods-on-hand, this eve.....also �Wright & Peters� tomorrow.
Fri., Jan. 20.
Beautiful. Today is the day, or rather, tonight, for our great show by the Epworth League, which is: �Mrs. Javley�s Far-famed Collection of Wax Works!� Of which, I took part in.....being one of the �Siamese-twins� (with Geo. Taylor, Jr.), and also �the Prince,� with Miss Emma Wheeler, who was �Sleeping Beauty.� I made the closing speech for the eve, in returning thanks to the audience, and also to the Miami Silver Cornet Band, for their �sweet-music.� I took Miss Emma tonight and, after the play, we had oysters!
Sat., Jan. 21.
Beautiful. This morning has been real pretty, so bright and warm. But this eve has changed. The Band tried to play out on the street this eve, and did too, but it was somewhat cold and windy. Miss Emma was in Store this eve, looking awful cute. She came after �commentary� for League. Mr. Ed Haynie goes �over� tomorrow night, so �Wib-is-not-in-it-at-all!� When will the clouds pass by??? (and also these rivals) Ha!.. Ha!.. Ha!.. Ha!.. No telling!!
Sun., Jan. 22.
Bright. I didn�t go to Sunday School, or Church, this morning. I wrote to Miss Lilly and Miss Katie.....also to Miss Emma tonight (21-pages). Ed Haynie is over to see her tonight. I went to Church with Rettie tonight. Today has been just a lovely day, but I have been in the house all day long! ................No! It was a mistake!......�Ed� didn�t go......Nobody went!!!???
Mon., Jan. 23.
Beautiful. Syd brought me a real cute note from Emma this morning. I went down to the Epworth League tonight, and we had a real good meeting. Miss Laura Carpenter led. I walked home with Miss Emma tonight, and, as I left her, I gave her a letter to read that I had written to her last eve. Pasted an �H. & R. Pants� sign on the window today, after I had washed them all off, twice.
Tue., Jan. 24.
Beautiful. I have spent most all day today in reviewing on the books. Mr. Jeter went out to see Judge Smith this eve, who has been quite sick. Today has just been a lovely day, but somewhat muddy. I went to Band practice tonight. We had some �pretty new music,� too. Got a real nice letter from Elbert this morning.
Wed., Jan. 25.
Bright. I received, O!.. Such a cute, sweet, letter from Miss Emma this morning as I went from breakfast, brought to me by her brother, Syd. It was a 13-page-one, too......you know it! If nothing happens, I expect to see her on tomorrow night. The boss went out to see Judge Smith this eve. I went down to the Methodist Prayer Meeting tonight. I got my photos from McDougall today (small square ones). They are very good, I think. Got a real nice letter from Miss Katie, today.
Thurs., Jan. 26.
Hazy. Today has been an awful, dull, cold, cloudy, day! I had the sick headache so bad this eve, that I went home at 12, and didn�t come back until 3 o�clock. Mr. Chas. Sohn is home sick, and Dan away.....so, as I had an engagement with Miss Emma, and I needed a shave, I got Will Andrews to do it for me! I spent the nicest and sweetest eve, yet, with Miss Emma.....you know it!!
Fri., Jan. 27.
Hazy....snowing. I sent Sunnie, Hallie and Floy, each, one of my pictures today. There was a �pie and pound� party at Dr. Wheeler�s tonight, which had about 75 present. I fixed-up, in a glass-box of mine, a nice box containing figs, raisins, pickles, snaps, oranges, bananas, candies, peanuts, pecans, etc. But, I assure thee....I didn�t �draw� with anybody. For Miss Emma and self ate it by ourselves, also her nice pies, too.......go away!! I just had a �holy-picnic,� but, don�t speak of the crowd! It was Jim Wheeler�s party, and, as Miss Emma said, �the whole nation was invited!!!� Ahem!
Sat., Jan. 28.
Sleeting. Today had been a �dandy�.......raining and sleeting most all day long, freezing as it falls. Not very much trade, let me tell you! I received a nice little note from Miss Gussie Edmonds, at Mexico, MO, this a.m. (in regards to photo) Ha!.. Ha!.. Ha!.... She is a good one!... Answered it tonight, and also sent photo!!
Sun., Jan. 29.
Today has been somewhat of a cloudy day. I didn�t go to Sunday School. Wrote pretty near all day on my Epworth League work. Took down my bouquets, and Miss Katie�s photo, today, and put Miss Emma�s up. You Know It!!! This is �Endeavor Night� throughout the United States. The Christian Church has their exercises tonight, to which I had the pleasure of taking Miss Emma. She had an essay to read at the Service. Syd Taylor over tonight, too.
Mon., Jan. 30.
Hazy. I brought down the �shoe stock� from upstairs today. We got in a small-lot of our Spring clothing this eve. I intended to go to the League tonight, but didn�t get ready in time. Yesterday was Miss Mabel Carpenter�s birthday, so tonight she has a gathering at her home. I went and took Miss Emma. There was a nice crowd there, and we had a big time.........
Tue., Jan. 31.
Raining. Received a nice letter from Bro. Dobyns, at Marshall, and also one from Miss Lilly. I cut about 1000 �shoe-tickets� today, for our Spring stock. I turned over my horn to the Band this eve, at 5 o�clock. Think I will quit, as I have had 3-years of it now. Went up to the Young People�s Meeting tonight at the Baptist Church.

FEBRUARY

Wed., Feb. 1.
Below zero. Today has been the coldest day of the Winter.....4 to 6-degrees below all day long. I papered a box, and fixed it, this eve, for my letters. Went down to Prayer Meeting tonight at the M. E. Church.....five were all that were there! I made the closing prayer. Wrote to Miss Katie this eve, and to Elbert tonight.
Thurs., Feb. 2.
�Groundhog Day�.. Snowing and sleeting! The �groundhog� got to see his shadow this eve about sunset, which means six weeks more winter! I mended the cover over �dress-goods� this eve, up at Mrs. Shelton�s Shop. Quite a crowd of young people went coasting tonight, up back of Mr. A. S. Taylor�s residence. I went and took Miss Emma, and we had a big time! Just a lovely night for it, and the coasting just excellent.....you know it!
Fri., Feb. 3.
2-degrees below, and clear. I made two red-white-and-blue signs today, one for the underwear dept. and one for overcoats. Today has been a pretty dull one. I went down to the Christian Endeavor tonight, at Christian Church, and, after it was over, I walked over home with Miss Emma, where I spent a very pleasant eve, indeed, from 9 to 11:30. Syd wasn�t over tonight! Ha!.. Ha!.. Ha!
Sat., Feb. 4.
Zero.....hazy. Today has been an awful dull day! We got in �Thos. Emerson & Sons� shoes today (117 pair), the largest stock ever received at one time, which I marked all today, and ready for labeling Monday. Got quite a cute note from Miss Gussie Edmonds this a.m., at Mexico, Mo., asking to exchange photos....which, of course, I will.....you know it!
Sun., Feb. 5.
Cloudy and dark. I went to Sunday School this a.m., first time for three Sunday�s. Wrote up my Epworth League work this a.m., and I also wrote a letter to Gussie Edmonds, to send with my photo, too. Shoveled snow off of Store roof, this a.m. Wrote a few lines to Miss Lilly Conway. Got out all my letters and separated them this eve, and put them in the box I made for them. I went to Church with Miss Emma tonight. Syd Taylor went too, with Ruth. We had some awful good ice-cream and cake....you know it!!
Mon., Feb. 6.
Zero....cold....bright. I labeled 117 boxes of the �Thos. Emerson� shoes today, and got all of the stock in good shape. It has stayed a few degrees below zero all day. Wrote a letter to Geo. Duggins this eve. I went down to our Epworth League tonight. Miss Emma led, and Mr. Harry Wheeler gave us a good talk. After the League was over, I walked home with Miss Emma Wheeler. I was on-duty, too, at the League tonight. Made my �letter-list� tonight and fixed box.
Tue., Feb. 7.
12-degrees below. I have been labeling and cleaning the �Town Talk� shoe dept. today. Got through this eve. Today has been a bright day overhead, but awful cold and dull.....�slick as glass� out-of-doors. I went to my room early tonight and marked all my letters and sorted them so that I could keep them handy....had 40-bundles. Mr. Geo. T. Taylor has been here (in Miami) 12-years today, and I have been with him half-that-time!
Wed., Feb. 8.
2-degrees above and cloudy. Wrote H. Hirschberg, St. Louis, about my eyes. I made 75 labeled-envelopes, to hold my shoe-labels, today. Today has been exceedingly dull. I made a cover for the center-table, up at Mrs. Shelton�s (two-strips, 4 yds. long). Went to the Methodist Prayer Meeting tonight. After it was over, I went down and loafed with Syd awhile. He set the oranges up....they were nice too! You Know It!!
Thurs., Feb. 9.
Cloudy. Today has been another pretty dull day. Papa is not feeling well, so I�m helping him to do his work now. The Christians commenced a �Sunday School Institute Meeting� tonight, at their Church, lasting until Sunday night. I went down, and, after it was over, I walked over home with Miss Emma, but did not go in. Syd went over, too, but we both came back together. You know it!!
Fri., Feb. 10.
Clear. Fixed a �Noxall Shirt� sign this eve, to put out front on tomorrow. I also made a small window decoration of zephyrs, ginghams, and �glorious silks,� that we got in this eve. I took Miss Emma to the Institute tonight. We were going to the �charade-party� at Mrs. Kile�s, but Miss Emma had such a cold, she said she didn�t think she ought to go. Syd was over and stayed until 10, but I didn�t go until �10:30 o�clock�. Goodnight.
Sat., Feb. 11.
Bright. I received 46-copies of the Saline County Presbyterian from Bro. Dobyns, at Marshall today. I paid all of my accounts today ($13.00). Don�t owe a man a nickel! Am not going to anymore! I heard Elbert was quite sick, so I wrote him a few lines tonight, at Kansas City.
Sun., Feb. 12.
Got up this a.m., at 8:15 o�clock. Went to breakfast at 9:10, and to Sunday School at 9:45. After "S. S.," Geo. Taylor and self took a walk to end of corner and back. I didn�t go to Church this a.m., but answered a letter to Gussie Edmonds, at Mexico, MO, in return for her letter and photo of the 9th. I went down to the Christian Church this eve, to Institute Meeting, and, after it was over, I took a walk with Miss Emma, up to Carpenter�s corner and back. On our way home we met Miss Woods, with the two Misses Bishop�s of Marshall, and I had the pleasure of making their acquaintance. I went back over to see Emma tonight, but I didn�t go to Church. Syd and Ruth did, tho.
Mon., Feb. 13.
Cloudy. I framed the picture of the Store, and also of Miami, this eve, and hung them in my room. I took a bundle over to Miss Anna Garnett this eve, and then walked home with Miss Emma. It has been raining some little this eve. I got a few lines from Cook today. Prof. Coleman died last night (sudden). I printed me some envelopes tonight....to Juanita, Katie, Lilly, and Emma. Talked awhile to Pike Bishop, Syd Taylor, and Will Andrews.
Tue., Feb. 14.
Valentine�s Day. I sent Miss Emma her veil this morning, that I forgot to give her last eve. The thermometer dropped 19-degrees in two-hours-and-a-half this eve.....from 44-degrees to 25. I fixed the Store curtain up at Mrs. Shelton�s this eve. Miss Emma was there, too. We took her order for her �graduating dress� this eve (real light blue). I went to the Young People�s Meeting tonight at the Baptist Church. Bro. Bolton called on me to pray, which I did the best I could, by God�s helping me.
Wed., Feb. 15.
Beautiful. Mr. Vanice was converted last night. The Boss left this morning for the South....to be gone 30-days. I received a beautiful Valentine from Miss Katie today, at Fairville. Returned thanks to her this eve, for same. I went to the Methodist Prayer Meeting, then went down to Christian Prayer Meeting, and walked home with Miss Emma. Went down to see Jim Wheeler this eve, who is quite sick. Hubert Woods, Harrison Wheeler, Philip Reynolds, and self, �sat-up� there tonight with him.
Thurs., Feb. 16.
Beautiful. I cleaned my side of the Store today, from top to bottom....moving every box... and, I tell you, I feel worn-out tonight! Shall retire early. Mr. Jeter �commenced� on his side, but that was all. As the boss was gone, he made many �trips� for his own good. Today has just been a lovely day. I received a �comic� Valentine today. It was a little late, I think, but it was a �daisy,�... let me tell you!
Fri., Feb. 17.
Clear now.....but the biggest snow we have had this winter, so far, fell last night! I made two kid-glove-boxes for the Store, this eve, up at Papa�s shop. I went down to the Christian Endeavor tonight, and, afterwards, walked home with Miss Emma. Stayed from 8:15 to 11. Syd Taylor was not over, so we had the parlor to ourselves...even all the children were out! What is going to happen???
Sat., Feb. 18.
Bright. We have been quite busy at Store most all day, today. I didn�t get dinner until after 1 o�clock, and Mr. Jeter, after 4 o�clock. It has been a mighty pretty day!
Sun., Feb. 19.
Beautiful. Went to Sunday School. Took a walk over to corner. Wrote a few lines to Miss Lilly this a.m. Dried the dishes for Rettie today, at dinner. Went to Missionary Meeting. Took a walk with Geo. and Clarence Haynie. Ed Haynie was over to see Miss Emma this eve! I took Miss Emma to Church tonight, and, after Church, we walked up to see Jim Wheeler. I then went back at 11 o�clock, and �sat-up.� Miss Jennie Wheeler sat-up with me, until 1 o�clock, and then I had the rest of it by myself.
Mon., Feb. 20.
Beautiful. We got morning and noon mails together today. I finished my kid-gloves� boxes today, and put the gloves in them this eve.....now ready for use. I took Miss Emma to League tonight, and then went up to Kile�s to a party that was given in honor of Miss Henshaw. We had quite a nice time, let me tell you. Today has been a pretty day. The roads are terrible, tho... which makes trade very slow (I rhymed!!)
Tue., Feb. 21.
Cloudy. I got to walk as far as from Miss Garnett�s to Store with Miss Emma this morning, on her way to school. I put up two-curtains at Miss Edna Saufley�s this morning. Got quite a nice, long, letter from Elbert Dunlap today. Wrote him a 20-page-one this eve. I addressed 70 of �Jacob Reed�s & Sons� Spring-announcements tonight, and got ready to mail tomorrow. As I have lost so much sleep lately, I shall retire at 7:30 tonight. So....Ta! Ta!.. Ta!
Wed., Feb. 22.
Bright. We finished cleaning and straightening the house today at 11 a.m. I printed a sign for myself, to hang in Miss Eva Snelling�s window when she is away, as I have charge of it then. I made four-towels up at Mrs. Shelton�s Shop this eve, and Miss Emma turned the edges down for me....ahem! I wrote a letter to Juanita this eve. Went to the M. E. Prayer Meeting tonight, and, after it was over, I walked down with Belle Burns, Katie, and Bertie, where we had singing, etc., at Mrs. Beck�s parlor.

Pretty. I received a letter from the boss today, in Montgomery, Alabama. Frank Burruss and Prof. Barnett had �a few words� this morning. I made a shelf to go under desk this eve. Today has been a right-pretty-day! I cleaned and straightened the two drawers in desk today. Went to the Baptist Prayer Meeting tonight. Helped Lem and Will invoice some tonight. Received a letter from the �Midland Loan & Investment Co.�
Fri., Feb. 24.
Clear. I cleaned out the old rubbish, papers, letters, and books, under the Boss� desk, and put in new shelves, and rearranged things generally. I also fixed my button-machine dept., for button-holders and fasteners. I went over to see Miss Emma tonight, and we went to Endeavor, and then to the �charade-party� at Miss Huyett�s. We didn�t play charades, tho, for all of our crowd wasn�t there, but we had an awful good time!! Such a bright, moonlight night....somewhat cool, tho.
Sat., Feb. 25.
Beautiful Today has just been a lovely day, but, O!.. My!....it has been awful dull....not very many people in town. I wrote to the �Zimmerman Co.� at Chicago, and enclosed 25-cents, for the book, �Letter Writer.� I also wrote to �S. G. Adams,� St. Louis, for price-list on stencils and rubber stamps. The River broke-up today, between 11 and 1 o�clock.
Sun., Feb. 26.
Bright. I went to Sunday School. Then went down to see Ferryboat this a.m. (after the breaking of the River, yesterday) with Hubert Wood and Mr. Burns. He got 7-sacks of mail today. I received a letter from Lyt and Sunnie (Myers) today, for my first time. I took a walk down to the graveyard this eve, with Hubert. I went over to see Miss Emma tonight. She had such a bad cold, she didn�t go to Church. Syd T. wasn�t over tonight as he is complaining of have �LaGrippe.�
Mon., Feb. 27.
Cloudy. I papered my wardrobe doors that are upstairs today. Today has been a dark, cold, gloomy, rainy, dull day! Papa left for Springfield this eve to attend another R. R. Meeting. I went down to our Epworth League Meeting tonight and we had a very good meeting, considering the weather. I was �on duty.� Had the pleasure of walking home with Miss Emma tonight. Put my doors back to my wardrobe tonight. Cold and windy out.
Tue., Feb. 28.
Bright. I mailed Walter Cook his package of merchandise this a.m. We commenced making up the boss� �memo-book,� to send to him when he gets to St. Louis. Today has been real pretty...trade slow, tho. Rettie stayed with Mary last night, so I got breakfast this a.m. at Beck�s.

Wed., Mar. 1.
Pretty. Papa got back from Springfield this a.m., from the R. R. Meeting. We got in our carpets and part of �Steven�s Shoes� today. I have got one of the awfullest colds I have ever had! Made me a �lemon-stew� tonight, and retired early.
Thurs., Mar. 2.
All kinds of weather! I marked and stenciled 350 boxes of �R. L. Steven�s & Co.� shoes today...from 11:30 to 6 o�clock. Today has been dull, sure enough! Tonight, just after coming to my room, I heard a voice down on the pavement, and, looking out of my window, I saw who it was.......so went down and had the pleasure of walking home with this party (who was Miss Emma Wheeler!)...ahem!
Fri., Mar. 3.
Cold and cloudy. I put up a curtain-pole around at Mrs. Ginn�s this a.m. I put �R.L.S.& Co.� shoes away this a.m. Put spool-cotton in place this p.m. Made rug-display in window this eve. Fixed the curtains in window, also, this eve. I went down to Christian Endeavor tonight and walked home with Miss Emma. Spent such a pleasant eve with her tonight (8:30 to 11). You know it is cold tonight!
Sat., Mar. 4.
Beautiful. President CLEVELAND took his seat today at 12 o�clock. I sent Miss Emma over two calendars and a note this a.m. Today has been such a pretty day. The Band played this eve. Will Kieffer took Miss Emma up to the �Lyceum League� at schoolhouse tonight....open session. I wrote Miss Lilly tonight.
Sun., Mar. 5.
Beautiful. I went to Sunday School. Took a walk over to corner and back this morning, and met Miss Emma, who was looking awful cute! You know it!!! Syd and I went walking this eve, over to corner, and, on our way back, we met......you know who!!! .. Ahem! This has been such a pretty day. I took Miss Emma to the Christian Church tonight to hear the sermon to the �young ladies,� expounded by Bro. Nickerson.
Mon., Mar. 6.
Pretty. I received a note from Cook, and a letter from Elbert this a.m. I made twelve-lids today for my hamburg , torchon-lace, and general lace, boxes-of-wood, today.....something that has been needed for quite awhile. Mr. Jeter sent me some mighty nice cake today. I went down to the League tonight. We had a real good meeting. I led tonight. After the League, I walked over home with Miss Emma....such a pretty-warm night.
Tue., Mar. 7.
Clear. Flora A. Mertens� birthday. (21) I papered all of my boxes and lids today. Worked until 15-minutes-past-ten tonight on them. Lem went to St. Louis this morning. We got in the �J. & P. Coats� desk this eve. It is a right-pretty desk!
Wed., Mar. 8.
Raining. I have had a sick headache all day, so, therefore, have not done much today. Today has been a dull and rainy one. I wrote to Miss Katie this eve. Went down to the Methodist Prayer Meeting tonight. Offered up a prayer, as I was called upon to do it. Retired at 9:45 p.m.
Thurs., Mar. 9.
Cloudy. I had 500 �boot-box labels� printed today, costing $2, for the lot. I wrote to Lem at St. Louis this eve. I fixed, and relabeled, all the �Smith and Stoughton�s� and �Brigham�s� boots on Mr. Jeter�s side this eve. I talked with Miss Emma awhile this eve at Mrs. Shelton�s Shop. Today has been somewhat of a pretty day after all. I went to the Baptist Prayer Meeting tonight. Wrote a 9-page letter to my sister, Lina, tonight.
Fri., Mar. 10.
Pretty....fair. I cleaned upstairs this morning and arranged our carpet dept. Also made a list of them for 1893. I covered my boxes, sitting up-front in Store, and made a change in our spool-silk and spool-cotton dept., which gave us counter room, and also room for the mirror. The �charade party� met at Mrs. Carpenter�s tonight, but, as Miss Emma didn�t care about attending, we went home from the Endeavor and didn�t go. Today is Miss Ruth Wheeler�s 19th birthday. I wrote a postal to Newt today, for shoes for Gus Leftwich.
Sat., Mar. 11.
Beautiful. Lem got back from St. Louis this a.m. He said Hubert Wood had gotten a place in �B. Nugent�s & Co.,� which is a splendid place... if he would just hold it. Today has been a lovely day, but very, very dull. Lem brought me my box of �Oaks� (3# of the best). I wrote a letter to Elbert this a.m.
Sun., Mar. 12.
Just beautiful! I went to Sunday School this a.m. Then took a walk with Geo. this a.m., to corner, and also to the College hill. Peyton Jeter came down today. Bud Whitaker, Geo. Taylor, and self, went over to the Misses Woods this eve, to call on Misses Gertie and Nannie Bishop, of Marshall. Just had a �holy-little-picnic!!!� Miss Nannie gave me one of her photos.....ah, you know it, too! Rolly Casebolt, Miss Minnie Casebolt, Syd Taylor and Pat Ingram came in also, so, of course, we had a time of it!!! I took Miss Emma Wheeler to Baptist Church and heard Bro. Lewis Boyer lecture on �Home Missions.� Got behind the piano tonight and fooled Miss Emma when she came in.......Ha!.. Ha!

Cloudy and cold. I put up hdkf. racks today. Sold my first carpet, this season, today to Mrs. Harrison ($15.60). Turning cold out. I didn�t go to my Epworth League tonight, but went to the �Democrat Meeting� at Mertens� Hall, for re-nomination of candidates for City Election:

Pretty. Washed all of my gas-jet chimneys this morning and cleaned my lamps up good. Today has been a real pretty day. I got a nice letter from Miss Lilly today. Also one from Mr. P. H. Eakles, of Marshall, and I answered it this eve. I went up to the Young People�s Meeting tonight, at Baptist Church. After it was over, I walked down to Mr. Al Wheeler�s with Miss Emma and Jennie, and then I walked on over home with Miss Emma.....ahem!
Wed., Mar. 15.
Pretty. I measured a room at J. D. Fristoe�s this morning for a carpet, for Mrs. M. J. Burrus, which we sold. I wrote a letter to Juanita, and one to Walter Cook......also an �order� to Frank Taylor. Today has been quite pretty, but somewhat cool. I went down to the Methodist Prayer Meeting. Had the biggest crowd that we have had for a long, long time!

Cloudy. Today has been the dullest of the dull! I wrote a letter to the boss today at St. Louis. Miss Lucy Gilliam was sick this a.m., so Miss Emma taught school, in her place. I went up to the Baptist Prayer Meeting tonight. I made my first talk in a meeting of that kind, tonight. It snowed about 1/2 inch this eve. Mack and Angie Lewis moved to the country today to live.
Fri., Mar. 17.
Cloudy. It has been snowing all day long. So much ice in the River that we had no mail this day. Old Mrs. Wallace (Uncle Jack Walden�s sister) died last night. I helped to move the corpse this eve, from one room to another. I cleaned off the center table at Store today, and took shoes and rugs out of window. I went down to Christian Endeavor tonight, and then, after it was over, I walked home with Miss Emma.

Hazy. We got our mail today....first time since Thursday at noon. I got a letter from Cook, and one from Elbert, today. Trade has been quite dull today....has been a dark, gloomy, day!
Sun., Mar. 19.
Beautiful. I went to Sunday School. Took a walk to corner and back, twice. Saw Emma with �Turpin,� of Carrollton, and Frank Burruss and M. Casebolt, out walking after Sunday School. I went to our Missionary Meeting this eve and read a piece. Took a walk up to Bell�s corner this eve, and who should we meet buggy-riding?..........Miss Katie Brown, Owen Smith, Mr. Talbott, and a young-lady visiting Miss Katie. Miss Katie looked awfully cute. I went to Church tonight at the Methodist Church, with Miss Emma.
Mon., Mar. 20.
Cloudy and raining. Today has been very dull, and also a dark, gloomy, rainy one! I got a letter from Hubert this a.m., at St. Louis. Went to our Epworth League tonight, and we had a real good meeting. After it was over I walked home with Emma. Had quite a time with Ruth and �Em�......they are �honey�s�......you know it!! I mailed Miss Lilly Conway a letter today.
Tue., Mar. 21.
Raining. I cleaned out the backyard this a.m., and put some time on it. Also had Uncle Isaac to clean side lot. Has been raining all day long. Mr. Harl, who was very near 103 yrs.-old, died today, at 12 o�clock. Prid Bell is 18-yrs-old today. She gave a party at her house this eve from 7:30 to 11:30. As it was so bad and rainy, I had a surrey to take Miss Emma in. I was honored by presenting a book to Prid, from the crowd.
Wed., Mar. 22.
Mixed. Mr. Jeter went to Marshall today on �Bishop�s and Isaac�s case,� so I had the Store to run, myself, today. Got in wallpaper this a.m., which I marked, stenciled, put away, cut samples, and put in book ready to show. And I also waited on trade. The boss got home this eve, gone 5-weeks to the day. I went to Methodist Prayer Meeting. Syd Taylor and self took a walk and then stopped off at the Christian Church, and walked home with the two Misses Wheeler�s. We got in �Steven�s� slippers this a.m., too.
Thurs., Mar. 23.
Pretty. I printed signs on the front window this eve, with stencil and white chalk. The thermometer was at 68-degrees today, and 72-degrees yesterday. The boss got back from the South yesterday. He brought Mr. Jeter a pair of cuff-buttons of alligator-teeth, and to me he gave a scarf-pin of same. I went up to the Methodist Prayer Meeting last night and to the Baptist, tonight.
Fri., Mar. 24.
Cold and cloudy. I printed a sign on the mirror today, for my first time, with stencil and prepared chalk. I received a nice letter from my sister, Lina, today. Measured Dr. Wheeler�s parlor this eve, and also the stairway, for a carpet. I sold him a $30-bill of carpet this eve. I went down to Endeavor tonight and walked home with Emma. Tomorrow is her 17th birthday. I have a 3# box of candy from �Oaks,� at St. Louis, which I expect to send her tomorrow.
Sat., Mar. 25.
Pretty. We have been quite busy all day long. I didn�t get dinner until very near two-o�clock. Today is Miss Emma Wheeler�s 17th birthday. We all (the boys and girls, I mean) gave her a nice rocking-chair tonight at her party. I sent her a box of candy this a.m. I had the pleasure of taking Miss Maude Wheeler to her party tonight. Geo. Taylor took Miss Landora Dick... Ahem! Lem and Mary had a little boy this eve.
Sun., Mar. 26.
Pretty. Went to Sunday School. Geo. Taylor and self walked all the morning. We went calling, with Elbert, to see the Misses Miller, and to Parrish�s, and then, with Lex McDaniel, to Wheeler�s and Carpenter�s. Miss Laura Carpenter was there, too. She is staying with Maggie Burruss, who has been there sick ever since Saturday night. Miss Laura came down in parlor for a short while....looking as cute as ever. Emma and I went to hear Bro. Bolton.
Mon., Mar. 27.
Cloudy. Today has been dull, and also a cloudy and cool day. I cleaned upstairs this a.m., and cleaned my lamps. Went to our League tonight. We had a good meeting, but did not have enough, by one, for a business meeting. I walked home with Miss Emma tonight. It snowed again this eve, but not very much. Got a nice letter from Miss L. M. C.
Tue., Mar. 28.
Hazy. We got in our Spring goods today. So just imagine how much work we have had to do....as all came in at once! I printed a sign on windows tonight. Today has been real pretty. I quit work at 10:35 p.m. Will retire now, as I am tired and sleepy.....11 p.m... Goodnight!.... W.

Clear. I have been tagging and marking hosiery and gloves today. It has been real pretty, too, but somewhat dull. I printed all the windows and doors tonight with signs....also the little showcase. Went down to Lem�s, after Rettie, tonight, at 9:30 o�clock. Didn�t get to go to the Methodist Prayer Meeting tonight, as I had to work. Retired at 9:45 tonight.....tired and sleepy.

Put away my hosiery and gloves today, and filled my 5-cent & 10-cent hdkf. racks. I made ten signs tonight of black oil-cloth. Fixed them and they are ready to hang outside tomorrow. Dusty out.
Fri., Mar. 31.
I went over to Dr. Wheeler�s this morning to carry stair-rods, and also stair-carpet. Walter Cook came today, to stay until Mon. or Tue. I went over to Dr. W�s again this eve, at 4 o�clock, to put up two curtains. Went down to Endeavor tonight and walked over home with Emma. I printed six-signs for Henry Bure tonight. Made my first payment to Sedalia Building and Loan Co., today.....$9.00.

Sat., Apr. 1.
Beautiful. We got in �Smith & Sons� shoes today. We have been real good and busy all day long. Sold $213 today.....so you know we have been in it!! Today has been a lovely day. This is �April Fools Day,� but, for a wonder, for the first-time....I haven�t been fooled today. Have had lots of fun, tho, on others.....you know it!!!

Beautiful. Went to Sunday School. Took a walk to corner this a.m., with Geo. Taylor, and then one with Syd. I took Miss Mabel Carpenter, and Cook took Miss Laura Carpenter and Miss Fannnie Burgess to the �Entertainment� at the Christian Church this eve.....Easter Services. We then took a walk to the corner and called on Ella Parrish. Then we returned home. I walked over to Wood�s and then to Lem�s with Rettie this eve. I went to the Methodist Church tonight with Miss Emma. Mag Burruss was over, too, and went with Jim.
Mon., Apr. 3.
Mixed. I have been working upstairs most all day today, and expect to most all this week. It rained and hailed hard this a.m. I wrote an 8-page letter to Miss Lilly C. this a.m. Received a nice letter from Miss Katie Brown this a.m. I went down to League tonight and, after it was over, I walked home with Miss Emma, stopping on our way to see Miss Jennie Wheeler a little while. (Mag Burruss was over also.)

Pretty. �City Election Day� Working upstairs again today. Lem was elected today to the School Board. I cut two-curtains down for Mrs. Harrison, in "the bottom.� Went to the Young Peoples Meeting tonight at the Baptist Church. Mr. Nick Smith gave us a talk. I walked home with Miss Emma, who came with Ruth and Maggie Burruss.
Wed., Apr. 5.
Hot and pretty. Finished upstairs today. Packed away blankets, comforts, overcoats, cloaks, and winter dress-goods. Brought down, from upstairs, all the ladies and children�s slippers. Syd Taylor and self took a walk over to the corner tonight....saw Miss Ruth as she came from Prayer Meeting, and heard Miss Emma play and sing. O!.. How sweet! It is such a pretty night!
Thurs., Apr. 6.
Warm. Packed away the gloves today and fixed �Smith & Stoughton�s� shoes away. Also fixed the ladies� slipper dept., and put �spring-line� of ties on rack. Cleaned out all of our showcases and rearranged them. Syd Taylor and self took a walk to end of corner and to Baptist Prayer Meeting, where we walked home with Miss Susie Hawkins and Miss Emma Wheeler. Emma stayed all night with Susie. We heard singing, too..........!
Fri., Apr. 7.
Beautiful. I hung four lace-curtains up in center of Store today, and fixed up somewhat of a display. Got me a very light pin-check suit today, costing me �//�= with ٹ= off for a pair of pants I traded to Lem. (NOTE: w.s. Myers always wrote his prices in code. I tryed to be true to the marks that he made, but was not always successful...just got as close as I could). J. F. Webster was elected today, as City Clerk, and J. D. Fristoe, as Assessor. I went down to Christian Endeavor tonight and walked home with Miss Emma Wheeler. Raining, hailing, and dark! You know it!

Beautiful. We have been quite busy most all day long. Such a bright, pretty day. Mag Burruss came over this eve to stay with Ruth and Emma tonight, so Syd Taylor and I went over tonight, after we closed-up at 9:30 p.m. Mr. Frank and Joe Frank Burruss are going to take Mag and Emma to Marshall tomorrow. I sold Will Redd a pair of my old pants tonight....also a shirt and two ties, for $ٹ.

I went to Sunday School, then took a walk to corner with Syd Taylor. Walked from the Christian up to the Baptist Church and back with Miss Ruth Wheeler this a.m., before Church. I wrote to Elbert this morning. Walked down to Lem�s, with Rettie, this morning. Spent the eve up in John Dunlap�s room. Wrote a note to Ruth, for Syd Taylor, this eve. It has been raining all day long. Miss Emma had a bad day for her trip to Marshall. I took Miss Mabel Carpenter to the Baptist Church tonight.
Mon., Apr. 10.
Pretty. Miss Emma and Mag didn�t come home until this morning. I wrote to P. Palmore for a sample-line of Epworth League badges. I wrote Griffith for flowers, for close of school. I made a shirt-display in the window this eve. Went down to our League. We had Bro. Bolton and Minor Lewis with us for the first time tonight. I walked home with Miss Emma, after League was over. Then I loafed awhile with Geo. and Syd.
Tue., Apr. 11.
Cloudy. Today has been a dark and gloomy day. Rained this eve a great deal. I put up two-curtain-poles at Mrs. Geo. G. Hawkin�s this a.m. We had our garden plowed today. I was up to Mrs. Shelton�s awhile this eve, and talked to Miss Emma. Loafed again with Geo. and Syd tonight. It is now lightning, blowing, raining....9 p.m.
Wed., Apr. 12.
Pretty....but windy. Mr. D. N. Burruss and Miss Edna Saufley were married tonight, at 8 o�clock, at Marshall, at Geo. Hahn�s residence, by our Methodist pastor, Rev. E. Y. Ginn. They took the 8:30 train last night for St. Louis, etc. Mr. Alvin Ruxton was the only one there outside of the family. I went up to Mrs. Hamner�s this eve to hear Sallie, and the twins, play a �trio.� Syd Taylor and self took a walk to end of corner and back. Heard Mr. Al Wheeler play at Store today, on the violin.
Thurs., Apr. 13.
I made a shelf for Mrs. Shelton this eve. I ordered a basket of flowers from Kansas City this eve, for the close of school on the 20th. Wrote to Juanita Coltraine. Jim Taylor (col�d) was drowned in the River this eve....four others went in, but they all got out. I called to see Miss Emma tonight. Had...O!...Such a pleasant time! She is going to Wakenda tomorrow eve, to stay until Sunday a.m.
Fri., Apr. 14.
Pretty. Miss Emma didn�t get to go this eve, on account of the wind being too high to cross the River safely, in skiff. So I took Miss Emma up to the Social tonight at Bro. Nickerson�s. We had quite a nice time. Syd took Ruth. Mr. Jeter was at home all morning....not feeling well. Today is a real bright day, but awfully chilly. I�m afraid the peaches will be killed tonight, as all are in bloom.
Sat., Apr. 15.
Pretty. Most of the farmers are busy today, so we didn�t have very much trade. Miss Emma went to Wakenda this eve, and expects to return tomorrow. I received a cute note from her this eve, through Syd Taylor.
Sun., Apr. 16.
Pretty. I went to Sunday School. Peyton and Slusher came down from Malta today. We all took a walk over to corner and back. Syd Taylor and self took a walk to River to look for Miss Emma, but she didn�t come home. I stopped in to see Lem�s and Mary�s little boy this a.m. As Rettie is out to Mrs. Jno. Snelling�s, Papa and self got dinner at Beck�s. I went to Missionary Meeting. Clarence Haynie and self called to see Miss Crear (?) at Bro. Ginn�s this eve, and then walked to graveyard. I took Maude Wheeler to Church tonight.
Mon., Apr. 17.
Bright. Emma came home this morning from Wakenda, Jesse, too. I took down my shirt-display in the window today. I measured Mrs. Cresap�s front room this a.m., for carpet. Sold her two. I went to Epworth League tonight. It rained so, that I came down to Store and got gossamer for Miss Emma, and also an umbrella. Walked over home with her, too......just had a delightful walk!
Tue., Apr. 18.
Cloudy. Made a display-rack today for the �show-window.� Then I made a notion display. Papa left this morning, by way of Marshall, for a Railroad Meeting, at Springfield, Mo. It has been raining most all eve. Sent badges back and drafted letter....for tomorrow (Epworth League badges...$8.70 for 3-dozen). Had sliced tomatoes for supper tonight. Mrs. Vanice sent them over to us. Will Andrews and Wib Burns went to Kansas City this eve. I wrote to �L. M. C.�
Wed., Apr. 19.
Cloudy and raining the whole blessed day!! I made tops for two green-boxes this eve, one for Mr. Cunningham and the other one for myself. Received a letter from Woods today. Rettie is staying with Mary at nights, while Papa is away.
Thurs., Apr. 20.
Cloudy and cold. Today has been �one of those days�.......raining and blowing all day long! My flowers came today.....perfectly lovely! Mrs. Shelton carried them up to Hall for me tonight. I had the carriage take Miss Emma to Hall and back. As I had to go up to Maude�s, for Rettie, I took Miss Maude and Rettie down to Lem�s.....eating with Lem now, while Papa is away. I papered my boxes this a.m., and printed four signs for Syd Taylor. Miss Emma got twice as many flowers as any of them (close of school).....you know it!!
Fri., Apr. 21.
Cloudy. G. T. and self had a little �spat� this eve. Wouldn�t have taken much more, and I would have quit....that is right, too!! I made a box for Miss Maude Carpenter�s clock this morning. Dr. Wheeler took Miss Lucy Gilliam, tonight, to the School �entertainment,� his first time out since his wife died. I took Miss Emma to the �contest� at Mertens� Hall tonight. Miss Lizzie Hamner got the medal. Prof. Carpenter, Bolton and wife, and Anna B. Taylor were the judges.
Sat., Apr. 22.
Pretty, but cold. Also somewhat dull! I didn�t get to go to the �contest� tonight, as seats were scarce, so I gave my seat up to Mrs. Bishop. Miss Susie Hawkins got the medal.....Hurrah! Hurrah! Mixed. I went to Sunday School, then took a walk to corner with Geo. Taylor. Today we had all kinds of weather. I went over to see Miss Emma at 3 o�clock this eve. Found Syd and Pat Ingram there, but they went walking with Maggie Burruss and Ruth. Newt came over this eve and brought Mrs. Saufley over. I went back over to see Miss Emma tonight. We were going to Church, but it rained. She gave me some awful good cake.
Mon., Apr. 24.
Cloudy. Took down the notion display this morning, and put a tie exhibit. Newt didn�t get to go home until this eve, on account of rain this a.m. I made a sign up at Mrs. Shelton�s Shop this eve...9-feet x 9-feet. McDougall is going to print it for us. I went down to League tonight and I led it. Walked over home with Miss Emma after it was over.
Tue., Apr. 25.
Raining. Graduation....and the �Great Banquet,� tonight. I got a letter from Miss Lilly. This is a great day for the banquet!!! It rained hard all night, so all of us boys had to hire a surrey for the occasion! Peyton and Slusher came down. Frank stayed all night with me. I had the pleasure of taking Miss Emma Wheeler to the banquet tonight. We just had �a holy-picnic� of it! But, did it RAIN!!! Don�t mention about the great supper we had. It was just elegant! About 100 were present, they say.
Wed., Apr. 26.
Cloudy. I had a real nice box of cake, also deviled eggs, turkey and ham, sent to me this eve, with a cute note from �the graduating class.� Ahem!... You Know It! Filled in on my side today, down to the shoe dept. Will finish that tomorrow morning, the first thing. The �graduates� had their photo struck this a.m.
Thurs., Apr. 27.
Bright. I printed a big sign today, giving prices on men�s and boy�s suits, hats, jeans-pants, overalls, and boots and shoes.......for our big special �cash sale� which is from the 1st to the 5th of next month. I worked on it until 9:35 tonight. Miss Sallie Hamner sent me such a nice dish of ice-cream last night. It was just fine! I received a nice letter from Hallie this a.m. Went through my shoe dept. today and filled-in again.
Fri., Apr. 28.
Mixed. Mr. Jeter went to Slater today. I finished printing my signs today. Hung a nice banner, made by McDougall, this eve. Dave Burruss and Edna got back this eve from their �great wedding tour.� I went down to the Endeavor tonight and walked home with Emma. Spent a very pleasant evening.....you know it! Flora led the Endeavor tonight...Ha!.. Ha! .. Ha!.. Ha!
Sat., Apr. 29.
Raining. Hubert Wood came up from St. Louis this a.m. He has quit �Nugent�s� and is now traveling for a St. Louis business, �Taylor Co.� Mrs. Vanice is some better this eve. She has been quite sick all week with cramp-colic.
Sun., Apr. 30.
Raining. I went to Sunday School, then wrote a letter to Miss Lilly Conway. I copied the dates of our family�s �births� from the Bible today. Syd Taylor and self took a walk down to the "Charles T. Sutier (sp?)" (gov�t. boat), and went through it. It is such a pretty, clean boat.....lots of people down there. I went over to see Miss Emma tonight. We went to the Christian Church. Ruth is still over the River....didn�t get home today... Ahem!

Mon., May 1.
Cloudy. First day of our �special cash sale.� We have been busy, too, let me tell you. Went a little over $100 today, for strictly cash. It cleared up real pretty this eve. I posted bills this eve, from here up to Bell�s over to Mertens�. Went to our Epworth League tonight and walked home with Emma. Mag was over. I left Syd T. there. Miss Emma gave me such a nice box of cake as I left... Ahem!
Tue., May 2.
Pretty. We got so busy today that we had to get Mr. Wm. Lemons to help us. I didn�t get dinner until after 2 o�clock. Elbert Dunlap came down from Kansas City today....expects to return tomorrow and then go to St. Louis to work on Friday. As I was coming from supper, I met Miss Emma, in buggy, at Mr. Harry Wheeler�s, so I got in and rode over home with her. Today has been real pretty. Mrs. Vanice is very low. Charlie Miller�s corn-flowers came today (ordered for Ba......?)
Wed., May 3.
Mixed. We didn�t have much trade this morning, but had lots this eve. Elbert went back this eve. I was at Mr. Al Wheeler�s Store tonight and Miss Jennie and Emma came in, so I walked over home with them. Emma was going to sit up with Mrs. Vanice tonight, but others did.
Thurs., May 4.
Mixed. It rained most all morning. We had quite a nice little trade this eve, but not very much this a.m. I wrote to Mr. P. H. Eakle�s this eve about a withdrawal in Building and Loan Co. I put Emma Wheeler�s name in her umbrella this a.m.
Fri., May 5.
Beautiful. Today is the last day of our �special cash sale.� Had a very good day. Lem and Mary took dinner with us today. Today has been the prettiest day this season. Mr. Jeter left the Store tonight, early, so Boss, and Ginn, Wood, and Jackson, stayed until after 9 o�clock. But....I made it to the Church in time to go home with Emma, as they had a business meeting that held later than usual. I was over and measured Mertens� parlor for a carpet this a.m..........first time in house since Sept. 21, 1892!
Sat., May 6.
Went out to Mrs. E. S. Casebolt�s this morning and cut carpet for the parlor, and I took a diagram for hall. We had quite a nice little trade this eve, but not much this morning. Weren�t very many in, although it was �horse-meeting� eve.
Sun., May 7.
Didn�t go to breakfast or Sunday School this morning. I wrote letters to Walter Cook, Elbert Dunlap, Lina, and Hallie. Then I cleaned up my room, got mail, and went to dinner. Took a nap from half-past one to half-past-four. Dressed, and took a walk up to corner with Geo. Taylor. Got supper and took a walk down to Lem�s. Took Miss Emma to Church tonight to hear the Dutchman, from Germany. O!.. That good marble and carmel cake we had!!
Mon., May. 8.
Pretty. I marked and put away a new lot of hats that came in last Friday. Also went through hat dept. and cleaned it up. Cleaned upstairs this eve and filled-in shelving in my notion and hosiery dept. I bought me a new pair of pants today for everyday wear (brown-mixed). Went to our League Meeting tonight. We had an awful big crowd....bigger than usual. I walked home with Emma tonight...such a pretty night!
Tue., May 9.
Beautiful. Took down wallpaper display and made a straw-hat display. I got a real cute letter from Miss �L. M. C.� this a.m. I went to the Young People�s Meeting with Geo. Taylor tonight, at the Baptist Church. Miss Emma spent the night with Misses Maude Wheeler and Landora Dick, so Geo. and I walked around and sat awhile, and listened to some sweet music. It rained a little bit this eve, but not very much. I commenced rolling hamburgs and laces this eve.
Wed., May 10.
Beautiful.....hot! Today has been like a regular summer day! The boss and Leftwich went fishing today at Duck Lake, and had good success. I rolled hamburgs all morning. Got a dozen bananas this eve. Syd and I took a walk and enjoyed them. We then went to the Christian Prayer Meeting and walked home with Misses Ruth and Emma. This is such a lovely night. We sat on the porch, as it was so pretty.
Thurs., May 11.
Rain and sunshine. Papa started to Marshall, for Boonville, this eve. Bessie Taylor gave a little birthday party this eve. I finished my hamburgs, laces, and veiling, this eve. I went to Mertens� this eve, to carry paper and also a curtain. Syd and self were out walking tonight.....met Emma and Ruth at Mr. A. L. Wheeler�s, so we walked over as far as gate.
Fri., May 12.
Lovely. I put on my light suit to wear today. I put up four-curtains at Mrs. Mertens� this morning. Also fixed one at Dr. Wheeler�s. Rettie went to the country to stay until Sunday. I wrote a funny letter to Lex McDaniel this morning. Talked to Maude Wheeler, this eve, on front-porch, as I came from supper. I sent Maude �stamp flirtation� today, at noon. Wonder if �somebody� will ever find card I left in basket while putting up curtain???
Sat., May 13.
Beautiful. I took breakfast and dinner with Mary today. O!.. Today has just been lovely. Trade awfully dull, tho. I mailed Lex McDaniel the letter today that I wrote yesterday. Wonder if he�ll know �from-you-know-who� is???
Sun., May 14.
Rain in a.m., bright in p.m. I didn�t get up �til late this a.m. Didn�t get any breakfast. Went up home through rain and fed my chickens. Went to Methodist Church to hear our Presbyterian preacher (Bro. Barks). Also went tonight. I started to preaching with Emma, but Syd and I traded tonight at Zea�s corner, so I took Miss Ruth to Church. I got dinner and supper with Lem and Mary. Mary played for me today, at noon. Mack and Angie were there for supper. I called to see Miss Mabel Carpenter this eve, from 4 to 6 o�clock. John Sibley�s horse ran-away and tore-up his new buggy.

Pretty. I addressed three-envelopes for Miss Mabel, to "Pete" (Elbert) this a.m. I took breakfast with Lem and Mary this a.m. Commenced cleaning �house� this morning. Went to League tonight. We had a big crowd and a good meeting. I got a letter from �Pete� this a.m. Walked home with Emma tonight, from League.
Tue., May 16.
Bright. Finished cleaning house this eve. The steamer, A. L. Mason, came this eve, so quite a crowd went down (or, rather, I mean tonight). I went down and got with Miss Laura Carpenter, so, after the boat left, I walked uptown with her. Geo. Taylor was with Emma. Papa got back from Boonville this morning. I got breakfast and also dinner at Beck�s.
Wed., May 17.
Beautiful. The boss and Sohns went fishing at Duck Lake today. I covered lamps and mirror today, and trimmed them all up. Got in �Smith & Stoughton�s� and �J. H. Brigham�s� shoes yesterday, that have been out since Feb. 27, 1893. I went to Methodist Prayer Meeting tonight....walked home with sister. Took a walk with Geo. Taylor to corner and back tonight. Retired early.

Lovely. Today has been another pretty day. I took the stove down today (in Store) and rearranged things generally. Miss Ruth Wheeler made four such pretty tissue paper-balls for me, and brought them up to me this eve. I put them on my draped mirror in Store. George S. Taylor and self took a walk tonight....met Miss Ruth and Emma, so we walked over home with them. Mr. Jeter went home sick this eve.
Fri., May 19.
Cloudy. Mr. Jeter at home, sick. I put a shelf in Mrs. Geo. Taylor�s sideboard, hung two-curtains, and fixed hinge on sideboard door. Very windy and dusty today. Frank Webster got in from Va. this a.m. I got a letter from Milt McDonald this a.m., also answered it this eve. Rettie and Edna went to Marshall. I wrote to Elbert. Got one that I wrote to him on the 7th, returned to me this a.m. (Wrong address!) I called to see Emma tonight.

Pretty. A telegram reached this place this a.m.....that Pickett Holton was drowned in Idaho, on the morning of the 16th.....body not yet found. It clouded up this eve at 5 o�clock and has been raining and blowing pretty hard ever since. Edna Saufley and Rettie got back from Marshall this eve. I got a letter from Katie Brown today....also a note from Frank Taylor.
Sun., May 21.
Beautiful. I went to Sunday School, then took a walk with Frank Webster and Geo. Taylor. We passed-by Parrish�s, and they (Ella and Laura) called me in, so I stayed until 12, and then walked home with Laura. Today is �Children�s Day� at the Methodist Church. I read an essay, �Association,� which was written by Miss Emma, and given to me to read. Ella and Laura promised me cake, too. Frank W. and self called on the Miss Carpenter�s this eve, from 4:30 to 6:30. They gave us some awful good cake! I took Miss Emma to Church tonight. Syd T. made arrangements for John Sibley, for next Sunday night.......!!

Windy and dusty. It was just one-year this eve, at 7 o�clock, since Bob died. I went through wallpaper dept. today. Trimmed about 60 to 70-rolls of paper today. Got a nice letter from L. M. C. today. Wrote to K. B. this eve. Went down to our Epworth League Meeting and, afterwards, walked home with Emma.
Tue., May 23.
Cool, but pretty. Cleaned upstairs. Papered-up the hole in wall that stove came from. Papered two fan-boxes today, and put fans out on sale. Got a letter from Hubert Wood, at Macon. Miss Ella Parrish brought me such a nice box of cake this eve, which I received for reading the essay on Sunday. O!.. It was awfully good, let me tell you!! I went up to the Young People�s Meeting tonight, and walked home with Miss Ruth and Emma, while Geo. went with Maude and Landora.

Pretty, but windy. I put four-curtains up at Mr. H. D. Carpenter�s this a.m. Mr. Jeter went to Malta Bend this eve, with family, to Miss Mattie Brown�s wedding. I wrote a 10-page letter to Miss L. M. C., this eve. Boss at home playing croquet this eve. I went out to Judge Ish�s this eve for the boss� old horse. Geo. Taylor and self took a walk up to corner and back tonight. I went down to the Christian Church tonight and walked home with Emma (and Syd, with Ruth).
Thurs., May 25.
Cold and cloudy. The boss and Charles Sohns �gone-fishing.� Received some �kiss me if you wish� chewing gum, from Pete. I sent a package to Mabel C., and also a note! Received an answer, and mailed it, and my note, to Pete, this eve. It has been raining most all evening. Rettie and Mary went to Malta Bend this morning. The negroes had a �Church Banquet� tonight, and had �The Malta Bend Colored Band� here, but the weather made it a bad night for their �entertainment.� I retired at 8:30 tonight, first time that early for a long, long time.
Fri., May 26.
Raining. I washed all my showcases, rearranged them, washed windows, etc., today. Got dinner and supper at Beck�s. Hubert Wood got in today. Rettie and Mary didn�t get home. It rained all day long. I heard �the particulars� of Pickett Holton's death today. Wrote same to Miss Lilly tonight. Geo. Taylor and self took a walk over to the corner and back tonight. Mr. Jeter burnt all my paper trimming off of my front lamps tonight.
Sat., May 27.
Rettie and Mary got back from Malta Bend this morning. The �Ringling Bros. Circus� showed at Marshall today. It rained some this morning, but cleared-off some after 10 o�clock, so today has been quite pretty. Trade somewhat dull. Geo. T. and self took a walk tonight after we closed....over to corner and back. The Masongot here tonight on her �up� trip. Mailed Miss Lilly a letter today.
Sun., May 28.
Pretty. I went to Sunday School. Geo. Taylor and self took a walk this a.m., after S. S., and met Miss Ella Parrish and Miss Mabel Carpenter. Geo. walked with Ella, and I, with Mabel, from Christian Church over to schoolhouse, and then back up to Parrish�s, where we had deviled-eggs! Then I walked up to Carpenter�s with Mabel where she gave me a letter �E�. Ha!.. Ha!.. Ha!.. You Know it!! I called to see Emma this eve from 2:30 to 7:10. John Sibley went with her to Church tonight. I had the pleasure of being behind piano awhile this eve, while �fishing party� was talking of going on the 30th. I took Miss Mabel to Church tonight. We sat out on porch and talked, while Charles and Laura took the parlor.

Pretty. Trade very dull. I went through the �agate button� dept. this morning. Went to our League tonight. I was on-duty for eight verses of Second Kings, 7th chapter. Had a big crowd. I walked home with Miss Emma Wheeler, and also Miss Susie Hawkins, who was with her. Bro. Eustace was with us tonight. We had the largest crowd we have had yet.
Tue., May 30.
Pretty. The boss and Sohn�s went fishing down to Duck Lake. Ella Parrish was the only �town-girl� that went fishing today with the country-click. I got such a nice dish of strawberries and cake sent to me today, from Miss Emma. Got dinner at Beck�s today, as Rettie is cleaning house. Rubie Ireland was buried this a.m. I went to the graveyard. Lottie Sanders sent me a chicken today, for my birthday (Sat.). Called to see Emma tonight. Mrs. G. T. T. had a few words about the wedding ! (M. and L.). Henry Gadbury was married to a DeWitt girl today, at DeWitt.

Cloudy and rainy. Trade very dull. Stopped in, as I came from my breakfast this a.m., and talked to Maude Wheeler awhile. Also talked to Mrs. Hamner and Sallie, for Sallie to go to DeWitt with us Friday, but she couldn�t go. Bro. Eustace preached at the M. E. Church tonight. He gave us a good, long, 53-minute, sermon, from 5th Chapter, 3rd verse (1st part), of the Songs of Solomon.

Thurs., June 1.
Cloudy. Miss Katie Mertens and John Lewis were married today at high-noon.....left at once for Nebraska, their future home. I went around to see Ella, Mabel, Laura, Jennie, Maude and Landora for the Excursion tomorrow eve. Went to Baptist P. Meeting tonight. Walked home with Maude and Landora. Cook came today. Miss Lilly Fisher, of Marshall, is over. Geo. T. and Hubert went over the road this eve (I mean �across the River�) to Burruss�.
Fri., June 2.
Cloudy. A crowd, as follows, went to DeWitt this eve, on boat, to meet Miss Gussie Edmonds: Prid Bell, Mabel and Laura Carpenter, Jennie Wheeler, Ella Parrish, Maude Wheeler, Landora Dick, Jennie Morton, Emma and Ruth Wheeler, Ida Haynie and Alice, Clarence Haynie, Frank Webster, Jim Wheeler, Syd and Geo. Taylor, Hubert Wood, and myself. There was a big crowd, besides ours. We shall always remember this, for lots have been made mad over it! We had just a splendid supper for the occasion....ice-cream and cake, pickles, sandwiches, �trubled-eggs,� and, in fact, everything! We went to Carpenter�s tonight, a few only. I took Miss Emma up.
Sat., June 3.
Pretty. My birthday (22 yrs.). I received...O!.. Such a lovely painted hat-mark this eve from Miss Emma, as a remembrance of my 22nd anniversary. It is just perfectly beautiful!!
Sun., June 4.
Rained. I didn�t get up until 9:30 o�clock this a.m. It rained all day long. I wrote a letter to Miss Lilly this a.m. Hubert showed me all his samples this evening. Geo. Taylor and Clem Watson brought me a slice of cake from Miss Maude Wheeler this eve. It was good, too! I took a walk to end of corner with Clarence Haynie, Geo. Taylor and Jim Wheeler. We also went over to Mertens� corner, where I left them ad went over to call on Miss Emma. We didn�t go to Church tonight. Syd and Ruth, either.
Mon., June 5.
Pretty. Mr. Jeter went to Malta Bend today, with Hubert Wood. We have been somewhat busy most all day long. Papa bought a jersey-cow from Mr. W. Burgess this eve ($40). I went up to see Mrs. Dr. Edmonds, in regard to our milk that we have been getting from her. We had a big Epworth League Meeting tonight, and good interest manifested. I walked home with Miss Emma, but didn�t go in.
Tue., June 6.
Beautiful. I put two-curtains up at Mrs. Geo. T. Taylor�s, and Miss Anna Garnett�s this eve. Also fixed a flower-frame for Mrs. Taylor. I printed 202 remnants-labels this eve. Wrote a 10-page letter to Miss Katie this eve. Got a letter from �Pete� this a.m. I called to see Miss Gussie Edmonds tonight, and we went up to the Young People�s Meeting at the Baptist Church. Had such a nice time tonight. Poor Frank Webster......Ha!.. Ha!.. Ha! The Band commenced practicing for the �picnic� on the 22nd.
Wed., June 7.
Beautiful. I have been working on a �remnant-counter� all day.....got out about 50 today, but won�t get through before tomorrow. Rettie went out to Mr. Jno. Snelling�s this eve, to go on a �camp-fishing� trip with them tomorrow. Lem and Mary took dinner with us today. Mabel Carpenter and Ella Parrish went to Marshall yesterday eve, to attend Miss Fannie Taylor�s graduating exercises, and also Miss Iona Nichol�s wedding this eve, at 3 o�clock. I had the pleasure of calling on Miss Laura Carpenter tonight. Spent such a nice pleasant night of it!
Thurs., June 8.
Beautiful. I commenced boarding at Mrs. Beck�s this a.m. Maude Wheeler left for Gilliam, Slater, etc., for a 3-week visit. Emma is out to Mr. Joshua C. Reynold�s (her aunt and uncle) for this week. Mabel Carpenter got back from Marshall this a.m. I blacked a pair of tan �Blutcher� slippers today. Trade dull. Tina Shelton came home this eve, from Trenton. Syd Taylor and self went out walking tonight, and met Misses Mary Haynie and Ruth Wheeler, so we walked over to Dr. Wheeler�s with them and sat awhile.
Fri., June 9.
Lovely. Miss Laura Carpenter went up to Waverly today, to stay until next week. Miss Gussie Edmonds, Flora and Rosa Mertens, and a crowd, went fishing yesterday, with the country boys, up to Grand Pass. Miss Emma got in from the country this eve. I blacked a pair of slippers for Scott & Miller. Printed a sign on mirror this a.m., and also printed two black-oil-cloth signs. Old Mrs. Rider passed away this eve, at 5 o�clock. Rettie came home from fishing this eve. I called to see Miss Emma tonight, 8:30 to 10:45. (Syd, too.)

Pretty. Today has been pretty, but awfully, awfully, dull. Miss Susie Hawkins came back from Marshall today. She gave me one of her little photos this eve. I sent a telegram to Marshall, then to Boonville, to Mr. Hudson, this eve, to ask if he had gone to �World�s Fair� yesterday....which he had! It rained some this eve.
Sun., June 11.
Beautiful. I got up at 8:30 this a.m. Took a walk over to corner this a.m., with Geo. Taylor and Clarence Haynie. I went to preaching at the M. E. Church this a.m., to hear our Presbyterian preacher, Bro. Barks. I went tonight, also, with Miss Emma. Syd Taylor and self had ice-cream at Beck�s this eve, and tonight, too! I went over to Dr. Wheeler�s, with Syd, at 2:15 this eve, then down to Ruxton�s warehouse, and from there to see Jim Taylor�s body, that was found afloat. I went to the �Children�s Day� Meeting at the Christian Church this eve, and walked home with Emma. I walked up to Dr. Edmonds� this eve to see Miss Katie Brown, who had just come in for a little visit. Had some awfully good cake there, too! Frank Webster went to Marshall, with Bud. I was going, but backed out.
Mon., June 12.
Beautiful. Mattie and the children came over Saturday eve. Went home this eve. Lem and Mary spent yesterday with Mack and Angie. Papa is working at Ross� today and tomorrow. Rettie was taken sick tonight with cramp-colic. Mattie and children, Lem and Mary, took dinner with us today. It is so awfully, awfully hot.....92-degrees in shade. They are practicing at the Baptist Church tonight for Memorial Services tomorrow. As I came from home, after League, I met Emma and walked home with her, where we had peaches and cream and cake. Syd was there, too.
Tue., June 13.
Mixed. Memorial Day.....I. O. O. F. This morning was just perfectly lovely, but this eve cloudy and rainy, although they got to have their Memorial Services between showers. I went to the graveyard this a.m., and fixed our three graves, and also one of Mrs. Nick Smith. It is 97-degrees in shade! As Rettie was sick, I got dinner at Beck�s. I walked down to graveyard this eve, with crowd. Frank Webster took Emma to the Christian Church tonight, to a lecture, and I took Miss Mabel. I sent Emma a pretty �lily� this eve......you know it!
Wed., June 14.
Cloudy. The boss went to Marshall this a.m. He took Bro. Barks over with him. I wrote a letter to Juanita Coltrane and one to Elbert Dunlap, tonight. Frank Webster walked over home with Emma this a.m., and carried her a bucket of cherries. I walked down to see "The Mason" this eve, and saw �Push crowd� go to DeWitt on boat (Mattie Lee). I went to the Christian Prayer Meeting tonight, and went home with Emma.
Thurs., June 15.
Pretty.....but very HOT! As I came from supper, Mr. Harry Wheeler called me in to hear, and see, Miss Emma play, as she was there and was going to spend the night with Landora. I went to the Baptist Prayer Meeting, and walked home with them both. Geo. Taylor went up to see Laura Carpenter tonight....first time for a long, long time!
Fri., June 16.
Mixed. John Dunlap, and self, started to Marshall this morning at 5:40, and got there at 8:30 o�clock. I had my eyes examined by Cody. Then I went around to Hahn�s and had my coat fixed. Saw Frank and Morrison. Saw Smith in regard to phonograph. Started home at 4:40, and arrived at 8 o�clock. It rained hard this eve before we started home, so roads heavy. Went over to see Emma tonight at 9 o�clock, and returned home at 11. Got ice-cream at Shivley�s before leaving Marshall.
Sat., June 17.
Commenced using medicine in eye this a.m. Had to quit work today. The Band gave a concert on Street this eve.

...I couldn�t write for 10-days because of eye-medicine. A few things that happened during that time:

On 20th.....I came uptown to see and hear music by traveling man....with Miss Emma.
On 21st.....John Dunlap and self went to Marshall, where I had glasses fitted to my eyes. Got caught in storm coming home, so stopped in Irvine�s barn......wringing wet, but OK.
On 22nd.... Sunday School Picnic. Went out to grounds in the Bandwagon, and had picnic, with girls. Came back home in surrey, with Emma. Took Emma to gathering at the Carpenter�s tonight.
On 23rd....Went to work again. Harrison Wheeler came up from Slater.
On 24th....Syd Wheeler had a party tonight, and Syd Taylor and self went.....stayed until 11:30. You Know It!!!
On 26th....Went to Epworth League and had re-election of officers. I was elected 1st vice-president. I walked home with the 3rd vice-president....Miss Emma.

Tue., June 27.
Pretty. I commenced on invoice today. Frank Webster called on Emma tonight. Took her to Baptist Young People�s Meeting. I retired at 9:20 tonight....first time that early in months.
Wed., June 28.
Beautiful. Miss Jennie Leftwich gave a party tonight. I went up and took Miss Emma, and we had an awful nice time. I have been invoicing all day. The boss went out to Mack Lewis� this eve. Lem took dinner with us today. Paid �Street taxes� today. Ollie Moore worked them out for me (my 1st). He owed me $2, so $1 was all I had to pay out.
Thurs., June 29.
Pretty....but �hot as blazes!� I wrote to Newt this a.m. Invoiced hamburgs today. The boss went to the country again this eve....riding. Rettie took supper with Lem tonight. I received a letter from Peyton Jeter this a.m. Answered it, also. I called to see Emma tonight, from 8:30 to 10:15. Gussie Edmonds, Maggie Kite, and Laura Parrish went skiff-riding on the River tonight. Big rain, late tonight.
Fri., June 30.
Cloudy. Ruth Wheeler spent last eve and night with Tina Shelton. A big rain fell this a.m., and it has been nice and cool today. The Young People�s Social Christian Endeavor gives an �Ice Cream Supper� at Mrs. Shelton�s this eve. I had the pleasure of going and taking Miss Emma. Such a pretty, moonlight night. Mr. Jeter sat-up with Old Uncle Jack Walden tonight (who is quite ill).

JULY

Sat., July 1.
Pretty. I have been out collecting all morning. Rettie and Miss Emma Parsons went to the picnic at Fairville this a.m. Uncle Jack Walden died today at 2 o�clock....has been bedfast for two-years. Miss Emma Wheeler sent me a bouquet tonight, by Jim. It is a �daisy,� too!... You Know It!!! Trade very dull today.
Sun., July 2.
Beautiful. Uncle Jack Walden was buried at 10 o�clock this a.m. I went down to graveyard. It was just awfully hot! I wrote a letter to �K. B,� and �L. C.,� and Drs. Cody & Leach, this a.m. Emma and Jim Wheeler took dinner at Shelton�s this day. I went down to Missionary Meeting and walked home with Emma. I went to see Lem and Mary a little while this eve. Took Ruth and Emma to Church tonight (Methodist). A lovely night.
Mon., July 3.
Beautiful. I have been rolling dress-goods, flannels, and carpets, all evening, upstairs on roller. Had a hot job of it! On account of our Baptist �entertainment,� our League met at 7:30 o�clock. I took a walk with Miss Emma after League, and we then went to the Baptist Church to the �Children�s Day� exercises. It was splendid! O!.. That nice hammock we had tonight......you know it!
Tue., July 4th
Rained hard.... �4th of July� ... Mr. Jeter went to Malta Bend this morning, with Mr. Leftwich. The Band went also. It has been just pouring down rain all morning. The boss played croquet all eve. Ruth and Emma were in Store for a long time this eve, and we had a �joe-dandy� good time!! Worked on my Epworth League work this eve, and wrote a letter to Elbert. Closed-up at 8 o�clock, and went over to see Miss Emma, where we had a �holy-fourth,� eating ice-cream and cake! You Know It!!!
Wed., July 5.
Hazy. We have been invoicing upstairs all day. Didn�t get through, tho. Will finish up everything tomorrow, if nothing happens. I went down to the Methodist Prayer Meeting tonight....first time for months! Capt. Ruxton led. I walked home with Ella Parrish, my first time with her. We didn�t get the western mail until 5, this eve, on account of the heavy rain. Two-and-60/100-inches have fallen since yesterday morning.
Thurs., July 6.
We finished invoicing today at 11:45 a.m. I cleaned upstairs this eve, and dusted everything down. Worked on copying invoice this eve, while the boss played croquet. Today has been such a pretty day. Prof. Lacy and Prof. Barnett sat-up with Mr. B. B. Berry tonight, who fell-off roof and broke his thigh-bone. He is quite ill. I called to see Emma tonight. What a sweet night it was in the hammock....you know it!! Lovely moonlight night. Frank Webster wanted to go, but I was ahead...........!
Fri., July 7.
Pretty. Finished figuring on invoice sheets, for the boss, today, so everything is �up� now! There was a crowd that went to DeWitt today. I was invited, but, as we weren�t quite through with invoice papers, I didn�t go. Went over to see Miss Emma tonight. The Dr. brought over two men, and Wib and Bertha Burns came over, so, as Emma had to go in and play for company, I had the hammock to myself for a little while. She came back in about an hour, tho, and we then had a nice little chat. She leaves tomorrow eve for Carrollton, to attend �Institute� for two-weeks.
Sat., July 8.
Pretty. I wrote a few lines to Geo. Duggins this morning, before breakfast. Received a nice long letter from Lex McDaniel this a.m. Miss Emma left this eve for Carrollton, where she goes to attend the Institute for two-weeks. Maggie Burruss went up with her. Today has been exceedingly dull.....all the farmers are cutting wheat. Hot, but pretty and bright.
Sun., July 9.
Beautiful. I went to Sunday School, first time for about 4-weeks. Took a walk to corner with Frank. Went to Presbyterian preaching this a.m. Stamped a lot of envelopes, to Emma, this eve.....to Carrollton and Wakenda. Wrote her a long, long, letter, my first letter to her. Took a walk to the River with Geo. Taylor, Clem Watson, and Fred Sibley. Went to graveyard this eve. Took Mabel to Church tonight, and we then took a walk over to the corner and back. Such a pretty night. Frank Webster sat-up at B. B. Berry�s tonight. Our Presbyterian preacher gave his last sermon today.
Mon., July 10.
Pretty. We washed showcases, glass, and windows today. I also made a few other changes. �Miller and Burruss� crowd, along with Frank Taylor, George Burruss, and Hubert Wood, went to the Pinnacles this eve for a little picnic. Frank Webster is now sitting-up with Mr. B. B. Berry, for the Lodge. I went to League tonight. Rettie Myers with the Misses Louise and Eva Miller Miss Ella Parrish was to lead, but we had no organist, so I led for her. Rosa and Flora were there....their first time....and, also, a few other visitors. I let Frank W. have our horse, to ride-out to Mr. Berry�s.
Tue., July 11.
Bright. Peyton Jeter came down from Malta Bend this a.m. on his �wheel.� As Papa is working down to Mack Lewis�, Rettie and self took dinner with Lem today. The "A. L. Mason" came up this eve, and a crowd of us boys walked down. Went to the Young People�s Meeting. I took a walk over to corner with Raymond Edmonds tonight. Got a letter this a.m., from Miss Lilly, in Ky. Printed a lot of signs this eve. Miss Katie Brown and Miss Emma Guthrey were in Store this eve.
Wed., July 12.
Pretty. Peyton went back this eve at 4 o�clock. I got a real cute letter from Emma, today, at Carrollton, Mo. Wrote to her today. I sent her the Epworth League-pin this eve. Went down to Christian Prayer Meeting tonight, with Clarence Haynie. Very few there. Hubert Wood is to lead the Methodist Prayer Meeting tonight. Floy (Myers) came down to see me tonight, so I got her a sack of candy, peaches, and gum. She came over from Marshall on Tue, in hack, with her grandmother (Mrs. Saufley). She is going home Sunday.

Thurs., July 13.
Beautiful....hot....94-degrees! The boss, Julia Taylor, Bertha Burns, Eva Miller, and Laura Carpenter, left this a.m., at 5 o�clock, for the Epworth Meeting, at Pulte Springs. Today has been one of the �hottest of the hot!� Trade exceedingly dull. The farmers commenced thrashing in the morning. Syd Taylor had me print three signs for him today. Syd and I took a walk tonight over to corner and back. We were sitting on the corner as Rosa and Flora passed-by.......Ha!.. Ha!.. Ha! .. Ha!
Fri., July 14.
Dull! Duller! Duller-yet!!! And HOT....don�t mention it! �W. A. Huyett & Co�s.� stock of dry goods left this eve on "The Mason." Miss Floy Flourney, of Linneus, Mo., came this eve to visit Pet Jeter, for a week or so. Hubert Wood met her in Brunswick. Rettie sawed down the old cherry tree that stood in the corner next to Mrs. Vanice�s this eve (the black cherry tree).
Sat., July 15.
Pretty. Got-up, swept-out, and dusted-down ! Brought water up and washed windows and looking glass this a.m., all by myself, in 1-hour, 45-minutes. How is that for time??? We had a nice rain last night. I sent Emma �a News� today. We got real busy this eve at 3:30, and kept busy until after 7 o�clock. The boss has gone to Pulte Springs, so we had all we could do! I got a real nice long letter from Emma today at noon (17-pages). I wrote to her tonight and mailed it. Walter Cook came again today.
Sun., July 16.
Beautiful. I went up home to help Rettie this a.m. Didn�t go to Sunday School, but went to hear Bro. Ginn this a.m. Peyton Jeter came down this a.m. Frank Webster took dinner with me today. Missionary Meeting this eve, but I didn�t attend. I was going to Church tonight with Miss Ella Parrish, but Charlie Miller was ahead of me! Took a walk to end of walk, to both Carpenter�s and Wheeler�s, with Walter Cook tonight, and then went to Church again (with Cook) to hear Bro. Ginn......first time I have gotten left, or failed to go to Church with some girl on Sunday night, for I don�t know when!!! Cook stayed all night with me. Will Andrews and McDougall left for the World�s Fair tonight.
Mon., July 17.
Pretty. They robbed Dr. Edmonds� last night.....got two gold watches and some little pocket-change. Also $3 from Mrs. Beck, and $6 at Mr. R. Haynie�s. I dropped Emma a few lines this eve. The boss and other delegates got back from Pulte Springs this a.m. Floy and Pet Jeter brought me such a nice box of cake this eve. I went to League tonight....was on duty. Walked home with Miss Mabel Carpenter. We took a walk, then sat in the gate a long, long while. Geo. went with Laura. Cook got left......Ha!.. Ha!.. Ha!
Tue., July 18.
Cloudy. The boss left this morning for the bedside of Mr. Frazier, in Ky, who is quite ill. I went up to Carpenter�s this a.m., with Cook, to see about going to Mt. Carmel Supper, on Thurs. night. I received a real cute letter from Emma this morning. I answered it this eve, in 3 o�clock mail. Hubert and Floy went to DeWitt on the "Mattie Lee" this eve. Geo. Taylor and self went up to Jeter�s tonight to call on Pet and Miss Floy Flourney. We went to the Young People�s Meeting tonight at the Baptist Church. They made another attempt to catch the robber this eve, on the other side of the River, but failed to do so.
Wed., July 19.
Pretty. I made myself a drawer this morning, and put it in the shoe-counter, with a lock on it. They started out for a man in the woods behind the schoolhouse this eve. They saw him, but he got away from them. There was a nice gathering down at Miller�s tonight, but, as I had an engagement with Miss Floy Flourney, of course I couldn�t attend both. Hubert Wood sat-up, for Frank Webster, out to Mr. Berry�s tonight. Frank went to Miller�s with Geo. Burruss, Geo. Taylor, Walter Cook, Clarence Haynie, and Fred Sibley. Syd Taylor left for the World�s Fair this eve.
Thurs., July 20.
Trade exceedingly dull. The Mt. Carmel M. E. Church gave a �Supper� at Mr. Balden�s, at Fairville, tonight. The Band, from here, went out, and also others. Walter Cook and self took Misses Maggie Kite, Laura Carpenter, Mabel Carpenter, and Landora Dick, over. We had quite a nice time....you know it!! I was so sick this eve that I went to my room and slept an hour, then, afterwards, I felt much better. I put a curtain up for Mrs. Hamner, in Hall, this a.m.
Fri., July 21.
Beautiful. I received a note this morning from Miss Emma at Carrollton, saying she hadn�t received my last letter, of the 18th. So I wrote her one today and mailed it this eve, to Wakenda, where she will get it on tomorrow when she gets there. Today has been dry, dull, and dusty. The Baptists give a �Social� at Lem�s tonight. I went and took Miss Maude Wheeler. We didn�t get any ice-cream, though, for it gave out before we got to eat. We got the cake, though!!
Sat., July 22.
Beautiful. This is the Negro�s Grand Picnic Day! They had the �Richmond Band� here. I let Mr. Wood have my dark glasses, and also my gold glasses today, for Miss Lizzie, as she broke hers this morning. I retired tonight at 10:30 o�clock. Hubert Wood is staying with me.
Sun., July 23.
Beautiful. I went to breakfast, then to Sunday School. I spent the morning at Store, with the boys . Peyton Jeter came down this morning. I showed Raymond Edmonds, Frank Webster, Will Wood, and Geo. Taylor, my box of photos this eve, up in my room. Miss Katie Brown�s friend, Miss Howard, of Kansas City, came in this eve with the Fairville boys, to spend a week, or so, with Miss Gussie Edmonds. Frank Webster and self took a walk to the corner. We then went up to Wheeler�s, where he took Landora, and I took Miss Maude to Church. Miss Maude sent me such a nice dish of ice-cream and cake tonight. It was just fine!! Bill Galbraith, who died at K. C. on his way home, was buried here this morning at 9 o�clock....at Bluff graveyard.
Mon., July 24.
Pretty. I finished my scrapbook today, putting in pieces that I had saved for about a year. Emma Wheeler got home today, from Carrollton. Hurrah! I went over to see her tonight, and we went to League. What a nice eve we spent together....you know it! Our League wasn�t as good as usual tonight, but I hope it will improve after the �busy-season� is over with our boys. Hubert stayed with me tonight. I wrote 24-pages to Elbert today.
Tue., July 25.
Pretty. Syd Taylor got back from the World�s Fair this morning. I had a nice talk with Emma in Store this a.m. The boss got back from Ky. this eve. I commenced cleaning-off my side today....brushed cornice and stopped. Syd Taylor spent the night with me tonight.....big rain-storm tonight. I went over to see Emma tonight. We had such a sweet time. We walked down to see "The Mason," and then back home.
Wed., July 26.
Cloudy. Got my �Smith & Wesson� pistol today.....first I ever owned. Cost me $13. (E. Grady). I finished cleaning house today, and am tired and worn-out. Got a letter from Miss Lilly Conway. Syd Taylor and self took a walk tonight, and then we came back to the Christian Church, and walked home with Ruth and Emma. Syd stayed all night with me again. The �century-plant� at Mertens� bloomed tonight. Lots of the townspeople went over to see it.
Thurs., July 27.
Cloudy. I washed windows and all the showcases, and rearranged them. I cleaned lamps and jet-chimneys (nine), and filled button-machine up this morning. I commenced on a new wallpaper book this eve. I want to finish it tomorrow, if I can. The Miami Cornet Band gave a �Supper� at Gus Leftwich�s tonight. Had a nice big crowd, and a lovely night for it. I had the pleasure of taking Miss Emma Wheeler tonight.....you know it!
Fri., July 28.
Mixed. I pasted the wallpaper samples in my book today. Gussie Edmonds and her company, and Frank, George, and Clarence, went to DeWitt this eve. I didn�t get to go as had other work to do. There was a party out to Jim Baker�s tonight, in honor of Miss Greene, but I didn�t attend, because Frank Webster and myself called on the Edmonds�, Brown�s, Howard, and so on. Frank, Clem, Omar, Raymond, Mr. McCall, Clayton, and self, were going out serenading tonight, but broke a wire-string, so we didn�t get to go. I received a real sweet bouquet from Emma this morning, and a note this eve. Walter Cook went home.
Sat., July 29.
Clear. Lizzie Wood, Mabel Carpenter, Ella Parrish, Prof. Barnett, Lacy, Minor Lewis, Jake Mullens, and Mag Huyett left this morning to attend �Institute� at Sedalia, for two-weeks. Today has been quite dull and awfully hot. Clem Watson, Jim and Clayton Wheeler, Frank Webster, John Sibley, Raymond Edmonds, and myself, serenaded the Misses Carpenter, Kile, Jeter, Wheeler, and Edmonds. We intended going on the other hill, but it commenced raining and storming, so we had to quit. Will Andrews got back from the World�s Fair this eve.
Sun., July 30.
Didn�t get up in time for breakfast, and didn�t go to Sunday School, or Church. Posted-up my books this a.m., and made up bed, and cleaned room. Owen Smith came in this eve, and took Miss Katie Brown and Miss Anna Howard, home. I went over to see Miss Emma this eve from 3 to 6. We also went to Church tonight at Methodist, to hear Bro. Clemens, the Cumberland Presbyterian preacher. Called at Harry Wheeler�s a few minutes, with Clarence Haynie.
Mon., July 31.
Pretty. Clarence Haynie and self went to Marshall this morning, at 8:20, arriving at home this eve, at 7:10 o�clock. Had such a pleasant trip and day. We left card in Henry Brown�s big gate for Katie and Miss Howard. Ha!.. Ha!.. Ha! I went over and got Miss Emma and we went to our League, as she led. And we then went up to the party at Kile�s....given in honor of Miss Clara and her company, Misses Bougard and Henshaw. A lovely night, so pretty and bright. Dr. Wheeler took Miss Bertha Burns......you bet!!!

AUGUST

Tue., Aug. 1.
Out collecting most all morning. I received a nice letter from sister this morning. I printed 200 shirt-box signs today. Got in �B. Kuppenheimer & Co.�s� fall-clothing tonight. Went over to see Emma tonight. O!.. How nice it was tonight in the hammock....so pretty and bright....you know it!! Miss Ruth Wheeler and Miss Mary Woodson went out to Joshua Reynolds�, to stay until tomorrow, so Syd T. got left this eve, as he came over with me........!
Wed., Aug. 2.
Beautiful. Frank Webster went to Marshall this a.m., to attend the Marshall Fair. I marked and put-away all the Kuppenheimer clothing this morning. Went through all the shirts this eve, and re-labeled and straightened them all out. Syd and self started to walk down to the Christian Church tonight, but met Miss Ruth and Emma, so we walked over home with them. These nights are so lovely. Lem and Mary took dinner with us today.
Thurs., Aug. 3.
Pretty. I changed the collars from the cornice to the shelving, on my side, this morning. Received a letter from Walter Cook this a.m. Also received one from my �missionary work.� Wrote a note to Ella Parrish, at Sweet Springs, and also sent her the missionary work letters that I received this a.m. I went up to the Baptist Prayer Meeting tonight. Came back and retired at 9:30 o�clock. Peyton Jeter went home today, after a 4 or 5-day visit. Today has been very dusty.
Fri., Aug. 4.
Mr. Jeter went to Marshall today. Lester Walden got in from Colorado today, at noon. Today has been a beautiful day. I addressed 85 �Jacob Reed & Sons� Fall announcements, to mail tomorrow. Syd Taylor and self went over the road tonight, and had an awful nice time! Willie Cresap had a party tonight, from 6 to 10 o�clock. Rettie and Maude waited on tables for her.
Sat., Aug. 5.
Talk about being dull!! Today has �taken-the-cake� over all others!! The Negroes have all gone to the Fair at Marshall, and the farmers are all hard at work. Syd Taylor and self intended to go up to Shelton�s tonight and walk home with Ruth and Emma, but they left before we got there. It is very dusty and dry. I hope it will rain. Maude Wheeler stopped me as I went by this a.m., from my breakfast, and gave me such a nice pkg. of cake and candy from the party last night. She is real cute!
Sun., Aug. 6.
Lovely. I didn�t attend Sunday School. Wrote a letter to Miss L. M. C. this morning. Read Mark Twain...also �Tramp Abroad.� Received a letter from Geo. Duggins today. Went out calling, with Clarence and Geo., this eve. We went up to Shelton�s to call on Miss Tina, and her company (Miss Huddleston). Also to Mr. Carpenter�s to call on Miss Laura and her company, Miss Vergie Galbraith. I went down home and got supper, then went to Beck�s to eat ice-cream and cake. Took a walk to the schoolhouse. Went down to see Lem and Mary, and then went over to see Miss Emma. We didn�t go to Church, tho. Miss Emma and John Sibley went to the country today, at Price Rogers�, to spend the day.
Mon., Aug. 7.
Beautiful. I stenciled 14 hat-boxes today. Put out 43 new remnants today on our remnant counter. Today has been quite dry and dusty. I bought 8-gallons of blackberries, for home, this eve, at 30-cents a gal. Rettie went out to Mack Lewis� this eve, with Mary, to see them thrash. I went over to Dr. Wheeler�s tonight, got Miss Emma, and came to Epworth League. We then went up to Mrs. Shelton�s, where we had a little gathering for Miss Huddleston (Miss Tina�s company).
Tue., Aug. 8.
Pretty. Judge Ryland, our Presbyterian Minister, came today. He begins a Meeting here tonight, with the assistance of Bro. Dobyns, from Marshall, who is to be here tomorrow. As �Old Hay� was not notified to open the Church and ring the bell, I had to go down and do so. It was not widely known that there was to be preaching, but we had 31 present. I walked home with Miss Emma, from Church to the gate, but didn�t go in. They saw some strange men in town tonight, so they put six-men out on watch tonight. Hot today? You bet!!
Wed., Aug. 9.
Bro. Dobyns� came this morning. I put out more �ribbon remnants� today. Frank Webster got back from Marshall today. They papered the Post Office today....first time for 8-years. I sold the bill! Today is the hottest-of-the-hot! It is 95-degrees in the shade. I sent papers and passbook in to Midland Savings & Loan today, for a withdrawal.....$36. The Merry-go-Round got here from Marshall tonight (8-wagon-loads). I went around to see Mr. Tony Burnsides, who is very sick, with dropsy. I went home with Emma from Church tonight.
Thurs., Aug. 10.
Pretty. I got an invalid�s chair for Mr. Burnsides this morning, and sent it up to him. Also called on him. Papa stuck a nail in his foot last eve. I fitted G. T. Taylor�s house up with keys today. Fixed a curtain for Miss Emma Wheeler this eve, over home. Wrote a letter to Lina. I set-up the watermelons to Mr. Jeter, Bro. Ginn, and McDougall, this eve. It actually rained this eve. I took Miss Emma to the Presbyterian preaching at the M. E. Church today, to hear Bro. Judge Ryland. Tina Shelton, Florence Hisle, and Syd Taylor, were over tonight.
Fri., Aug. 11.
Cloudy. I went to Church this a.m., and heard Bro. Dobyns. I washed the windows and showcases this morning. Got a letter from Elbert Dunlap today. Bro. Dobyns went back to Marshall today, to fill his appointments for Sunday. He will be back on Monday. I went to preaching tonight with Miss Maude Wheeler. Clarence Haynie took Landora, and George Taylor took Miss Fannie Taylor, who is now visiting them. Frank Webster took Miss Emma!.. O!.. Me! I went down to the Merry-go-Round this eve. Rettie and Mary took a drive out to see Mr. C. C. Ross this eve, who is quite sick.
Sat., Aug. 12.
I went to Church this morning. Received a letter from Midland Savings & Loan Co., this a.m., and answered it this eve. Ed Burruss died this morning at 8 o�clock. Jesse Wheeler came down from Wakenda today. I didn�t get to go to Church tonight. After we closed-up at 9 o�clock, I walked down with Syd Taylor to the Merry-go-Round. Didn�t stay long, tho, for it was too disgusting to me to see who and who rode!!!
Sun., Aug. 13.
Cloudy, then pretty. I wrote a letter to Walter Cook. Went out to the Christian graveyard this morning, at 9 o�clock, to the funeral services of Ed Burruss. I took Mr. Jeter with me, in buggy. I read Mark Twain this morning, too. Newt and family came over this a.m. It is Mrs. Saufley�s 70th birthday, today. Syd and I went over the road this eve, from 3 to 6 (Geo. Wheeler and I had at it!). Coming home I met Blanche Carpenter. She took me riding in her buggy, with Riva Hamner, up to her house. I walked back with Maude Wheeler, who was up there. I took Miss Emma to Church tonight. Mon., Aug. 14.
Pretty. Newt and family went back this morning. I went to Church this a.m. Dr. Leach, from Marshall, the eye-doctor, came today. Prof. Barnett moved into the Edmonds� house today, to go to housekeeping for the first time. I put up five curtains for her. The Misses Taylor, Wheeler, and Dick (and their company), sent Clarence and self a nice box of cake today. Bro. Ginn and the boss went out to see Mr. C. C. Ross, who is still quite ill. I sent him a box of tomatoes, by them. I went around tonight, for a few minutes, to see Mr. Burnsides. He was �tapped� yesterday, getting three-gallons of water. I walked home with Emma tonight from Church.
Tue., Aug. 15.
I went to Church this a.m. Mr. Vanice joined this a.m. Mrs. Joe Wilson had five of her children baptized this a.m. Bro. Dobyns came over again today, to help with the Meeting. I got a postal from Elbert today. I printed some more remnant blanks today, also some envelopes to Elbert. Got a picture from Lina today, of her baby, �Bessie.� Harrison Wheeler is over from Marshall today. Geo. T. and self went down to Church. Clarence Haynie took Rose Ellis, and Frank took Flora to Church tonight. Geo. and self walked down to the Merry-go-Round after Church, and saw a �preacher� there, too! That is so!!
Wed., Aug. 16.
I went to Church this a.m. Lem and Mary had their son �Lewis Allen� baptized this a.m. Today has been real pretty, but cool. I finished reading �Tramp Abroad,� by Mark Twain today. The preacher, and a good many others, went over to Mertens� tonight, to see a flower bloom. I took Miss Emma to Church tonight. Syd T. came home with Ruth tonight. The Merry-go-Round is still going.....big crowds attending it.
Thurs., Aug. 17.
Beautiful. I went to Church this a.m. Cleaned upstairs this eve. Gussie Edmonds and Alice spent today with the Ross�. The preacher dined with Mrs. Vanice today. Frank Webster is 21-years-old today. Frank took Miss Emma to Church tonight, and I took Miss Gussie.......spent a very pleasant evening with her. The Meeting closed tonight. Mrs. Vanice and self joined the Church, here, tonight, moving our membership from the Marshall Church, to here.
Fri., Aug. 18.
Pretty. Mr. Jeter went to the country today. I received a letter from Daisy Duggins this a.m., and answered it today. The boss played croquet most all eve, so I was left alone. Dr. Leach and myself went down to the Christian Endeavor. I, afterwards, came home with Miss Emma. We spent such a pleasant eve in the hammock.....you know it! Rettie and Mary went out to see Mack today, who is quite sick. I went down to see Clem Watson, who is quite sick also.
Sat., Aug. 19.
Beautiful, but somewhat dusty. Clem Watson, and Mack Lewis, and wife, are all quite sick now, with fever and chills. I got in 50# of �ball-yarn� this eve.....also 75-pair of shoes. This is the last night for the Merry-go-Round, so she is crowded to the brim! We had a little trade tonight, after supper.
Sun., Aug. 20.
I didn�t go to Sunday School, or Church, this a.m. Lum Rucker was here from Marshall today. He came over after Miss Rose Ellis. I took a walk over the road this a.m., with the boys. Went to Missionary Meeting this eve. Went over to see Miss Emma this eve at 4 to 5:30. At 6 o�clock we went driving out to Slim Bishop�s old place, and then down to the dikes. We then went to Church, and, after Church, we came up and got some bananas, then went on over home. Miss Emma had some fine orange-ice, and good cake, too, tonight.....you know it!!
Mon., Aug. 21.
Pretty. I printed a lot of labels for the children�s underwear dept. this eve....about 250. I made a ball-yarn display in the showcase this morning. Went around to see Mr. Burnsides this eve. Today has been quite pretty. I walked home with Emma, from the League, tonight. We also walked up home with Maude and Landora. Harrison and Tina Shelton were over the road, so I didn�t get to stay very long.
Tue., Aug. 22.
Pretty. I went through the children�s underwear dept. this a.m., and labeled them. Printed a lot more labels this eve. I received a nice letter from Hallie (Hudson) today. Geo. Taylor and self went to the Young People�s Meeting tonight. We went up to Mr. Harry Wheeler�s after that was over. Mabel and Emma spent the eve there, and also tonight. Geo. went with Landora, Harrison and Maude, Jim Wheeler and Mabel Carpenter, and Miss Emma and myself. We had quite a nice time. I made a little talk at the Young People�s Meeting. Geo. T. joined them tonight.
Wed., Aug. 23.
Cloudy and pretty. Mr. Jeter, Gus Jessup, L. J. Hamner, H. D. Carpenter, Prof. Lacy, and Dr. A. A. Wheeler went to Higginsville today, to attend the Old Soldiers Reunion. I got a letter from Cook today. I fixed the mirror this eve, using chalk and water, with a fancy sign of �ball-yarn� and �ice-wool.� I went over to see Miss Emma tonight. I put her name on her trunk for her, and also fixed a curtain in the dining room for her. I then remained until 10:45, and spent a real sweet evening.
Thurs., Aug. 24.
Pretty. I went through the men�s summer underwear, and the ladies� summer and winter underwear today, and also cleaned out my base. The Epworth League had a call-meeting tonight, to see about a Supper for next Thursday night, and, from that, I walked home with Emma, and stayed until 10 o�clock. Mr. Jeter didn�t get home today. Will be here tomorrow. I talked with Newt through the telephone today. Rettie went out to Mack Lewis� this eve, to stay until tomorrow eve.
Fri., Aug. 25.
Beautiful. Mr. Jeter got home this a.m. I went through the men�s underwear dept. again today. Posted-up my Epworth League �bills� today, for the �Supper.� Sent, or rather, gave Emma a box of grapes this a.m. I got a letter from Daisy this a.m. I walked up to Tina�s, from Endeavor, tonight, with Tina and Emma. Then Harrison Wheeler joined us and we went over to Miss Emma�s, where we spent a real nice time playing and singing in the hammock, the Dr. helping us out on the bass! You Know It!!!
Sat., Aug. 26.
Dry and dusty. A good rain is needed bad! We had only a tolerably good trade today. I cut 167 tickets this a.m., for League Luncheon, next Thursday. Will print them on Monday. I received a nice letter from Lilly C. this a.m. Carried Maude Wheeler a plate of grapes this morning as I came from breakfast.
Sun., Aug. 27.
Pretty. My last Sunday with Emma. Frank and Morrison, and Chas. Lacy, came over today. I printed 100-tickets this a.m., for the Supper. Got a letter from Geo. Duggins and wrote one to Elbert. I went over at 3 o�clock to spend my last Sunday eve with Emma. O!.. What a sweet one we had. Miss Ruth was so good too, to bring us some nice ice-cream and cake. Syd Taylor came over at 4, to see Ruth. We didn�t go to Church tonight, but went walking. O!.. It is such a lovely night. Remember tonight always!! Never will I forget it when �Geo. Wheeler� was at the screen-door, and,.. ah!...you know Emma and I took a walk to Carpenter�s corner and back. O!.. When will the thirteen-Sunday�s roll around again?
Mon., Aug. 28.
Today has been so cool.....70-degrees. Got in a line of men�s neckwear. I picked from the samples and made an order today. Zink and Sibley�s trial is at Marshall today. I went over and went to League tonight with Emma. Mabel and Laura were there, so Mabel went with Emma and I to the League. We walked up home with Mabel tonight, after League. Miss Ludie Shipp and Harrison were over at Dr. Wheeler�s too, so they all went. On our way home, we saw Mr. Sidenstricker�s barn burn-down. He lost all four of his mules, and his hay and corn. I spent such a sweet time with Emma tonight (only four more nights). I gave Mabel nine envelopes directed to Elbert. She is to write me some, too, for Emma.
Tue., Aug. 29.
Pretty. I finished the �Memo-Book� for G.T., to take east with him next week. I sent Emma two plums this morning, by Miss Ruth, that came from California.....big ones, too! Today has been very, very cool, and dull. The Baptists had a �Supper� at Fairville tonight. I didn�t go, though, but went over to talk to Emma tonight, where I spent such a sweet night. O!..I only have three-more nights with Emma before she leaves for school this winter. O!.. Me!
Wed., Aug. 30.
Bright. I wrote to Walter Cook today. The boss went hunting this eve. Miss Emma got word today, by her sister (Lizzie) who came today, that school wouldn�t commence until Sept. 11th!! O!.. How glad I am.....one-more week yet! Ah...you know it! Miss Emma spent the eve at Miss Mabel Carpenter�s, so tonight I went up and walked home with her.
Thurs., Aug. 31.
Lovely. The Epworth League held a �surprise luncheon� tonight at Dr. A. A. Wheeler�s lawn. Frank Webster and self went over to Dr. Wheeler�s this a.m., and worked all day for the Supper. Frank and Emma went out to Hanna�s after cream this eve, and I, with Misses Orear and Leftwich, went to Lemon�s, Berry�s, Haynie�s, Leftwich�s, Kile�s, Taylor�s, Myers�, Jackson�s, Beck�s, and other places around town, as we helped to get the benches all morning. We had a very nice little crowd. We took in $26.75, and cleared $15.70. I think we did real well. The Band played for us. Miss Emma and I had a real nice walk tonight. Such a pretty night. Two cakes sold.....Wib Burns got one, and I, the other, at $1.00 each. I got Rettie�s or Mary�s....don�t know which?? And I gave mine to Emma. Syd gave some fruit sherbet to Ruth.

SEPTEMBER

Fri., Sept. 1.
Beautiful. Frank Webster and self went over to Dr. Wheeler�s this a.m., and carried all the tables and chairs and dishes and freezers home. I then went back, and Emma and I counted up what was made after I had settled all the bills. Twenty-six dollars and 75-cents was taken in, $11.05 expenses, so $15.70 was cleared. I was out collecting from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. I was at Dr. Wheeler�s again, at 2:15 p.m., to get a plate for Mary. I talked to Emma quite a little while. I walked up to the library at schoolhouse with Emma this eve. Went over to see her tonight and Syd T. and Mag were there. I have one more week from tonight....you know it! I gave Emma a large pear tonight. It was �a daisy!� Good night...
Sat., Sept. 2.
Dull day and dusty. Miss Lucy Gilliam and Miss Mamie Wood got in last eve for school, Monday. Miss Maude Carpenter, now Mrs. Owens, got in also last eve, on a short visit.
Sun., Sept. 3.
Beautiful. Cleaned up my room this morning and went through all my letters and notes, and separated them. I took a walk down to the graveyard this morning. Went over to see Miss Emma this eve. My last Sunday eve with her in Miami for a long, long time. She leaves on Sat. eve for Wakenda, where she will teach school. We had the parlor all to ourselves this eve. O!.. How nice it was! Remember this eve always. We...�W & E - to - O & A�- this eve, at 4. I went back to see her at 7:20, and we took a walk, but did not attend Church. I went around to see Mr. Burnsides, also, this eve.
Mon., Sept. 4.
Lovely. Emma was taken real sick last night, about midnight. Is quite sick yet this a.m. I got a note from her this eve, in answer to one I wrote this morning. I also sent her a box of peaches, grapes, and bananas, this eve. Do hope she will be better. Mr. Jeter went to Marshall today. Dry and dusty out. Lester Walden commenced work at Edmonds & Grady�s today. I went to League tonight. Came home by myself....first time for months! The Baptists commenced a Meeting tonight. The Miami Schools commenced today.
Tue., Sept. 5.
Beautiful. I sent Katie Brown her photo today, also her pin......so we play quits! Emma spent today out to Mrs. Joshua Reynolds�. I went over to see Emma tonight at 7:45, and stayed until 10 o�clock. Spent such a nice, sweet evening. I took a note for her, from Maude Wheeler. Wrote and sent Katie a short letter with her photo and pin today.
Wed., Sept. 6.
Today has been perfectly awful.....HOT, dry and dusty. G. T. Taylor, and wife, left for Slater this eve, at 5 o�clock, to go to the �World�s Fair.� Papa made new lids for windows in back yard this eve. I went over to see Emma tonight at 7:30 o�clock. I took her �a pointer,� that I had made for her to take to school with her at Wakenda. She has been lying down most all day, but feels much better tonight. I printed a sign for Mr. Fristoe today, for �pen� at the post office.
Thurs., Sept. 7.
Pretty. We had the cistern cleaned today. I drove over this eve, at 2 o�clock, after Miss Emma. Brought her up and she had her picture taken with the other graduates, in a �sun-flower� form. Also at her home, at 3, she had her photo struck by herself, and also with Miss Fannie. I went to see Clem Watson this eve, at 4:30 o�clock. Went over to see Emma tonight, at 7:35, and remained until 11:15. I took her a �balsam pear,� and gave it to her to take to Wakenda with her. Always remember tonight in the dining room eating grapes!!! O!.. Just think.....only one more night!
Fri., Sept. 8.
Pretty. Elbert Dunlap came up from St. Louis last night. Mrs. Hooper died very suddenly last night. I put two-curtains up at Mrs. Hill�s this morning. Wrote to Uncle John (Whitmore) this a.m. I had the cellar cleaned and limed today. I went over to see Emma tonight for my last time (for a good long nine-months here at home). I went over at 7:25 and remained until 12:05 o�clock. Elbert and Mabel were over to tell her goodbye, also. O!.. What a sweet and pleasant eve we did spend together ........even if Syd and Ruth did intrude!!!! That was all right, I guess!! Before I left I gave Emma a few lines to read, after I bid her goodbye... �Bye, bye....we shall know each other better when the months roll around.�
Sat., Sept. 9.
Lovely. I talked to Emma a long while this morning in Store. She left this eve at 2:30 o�clock, for Wakenda, where she goes to teach a 9-months school. Mr. McDougall gave me the proofs of the photos taken in �sunflower� form tonight. And, as I promised Emma, I wrote a few lines and fixed the proofs-up, and mailed them tonight to her, so she will get them on tomorrow eve at 4:15. O!.. How shall I spend my long, long months this winter and next spring???? No telling......
Sun., Sept. 10.
Pretty. I got up real early this morning and took a bath, and then went up and helped Rettie wash dishes, feed chickens, make beds, set table, and also froze a freezer of chocolate cream for her. Frank Webster and John Dunlap, and self, went up to see Adolph Royar this eve.....got a big lot of �pop-poise.� John Dunlap, Geo. Taylor and self, went down to hear the �boy preacher,� Chas. Plattenbury, at the Christian Church tonight. He was good.....had a full house, too. I wrote a letter to Emma tonight....to Wakenda. You Know It!!! I sent a card up to Gussie Edmonds, this eve, for Frank Webster.
Mon., Sept. 11.
Lovely. I cleaned up the back lot this morning, and limed-it good. I got a sweet letter from Emma today, and also a letter from Miss Katie today. Wrote 24-pages to Emma today and yesterday, together. Elbert went back today. Arthur also left this morning. Miss Emma�s school only lasts 7-months, instead of 9......that is good! I went down to League tonight.....was on duty. Walked up to the Baptist Meeting with Mabel Carpenter. After League, Mabel gave me some envelopes addressed to Emma.
Tue., Sept. 12.
Beautiful. I mailed Miss Katie an answer to her letter of yesterday. I played �Bag-Pipe� with the boys today, at Band room. Mr. Jackson�s gray horses ran-off this eve, with a wagon.....broke the tongue in wagon was all. But also tore out the front end of stable. I went up to the Band room after closing-up, and played two or three pieces with the boys. Frank, Harrison, and self, went up to the Baptist Meeting tonight. After the meeting they had Young People�s Meeting, which we also stayed for. Retired early. I put a new frosting on glass, at Store, this eve.
Wed., Sept. 13.
Bright. I received a letter from G. T. Taylor this a.m., from Chicago, and answered it in this eve�s mail. I went over to see Miss Belle Burns this a.m., in regard to some silk. Miss Mollie Noonan�s husband (Mr. Needles) died last night. I got a letter from Emma today, and also two photos from her, too. One was just of her, and the other card was of her and Miss Fannie. I put Emma�s photo in a frame and set it on my stand this eve, in my room. I went up to the Baptist Meeting tonight. They had a good crowd, but no interest. Pet Jeter sent me some awful good cake and lemon this eve......just fine!
Thurs., Sept. 14.
Pretty. I cleaned upstairs this a.m. I received a letter from Uncle John (Whitmore) this a.m., in regard to pump, and I answered it this eve. I mailed Lina and Emma a �fashion-sheet� this eve. Today has been one the hottest of the hot!!! Misses Eva Snelling, Mary Zea, Addie Smith, Pet Jeter, and Minnie and Annie Miller, left this eve for the �World�s Fair,� expecting to be gone 10-days or two-weeks. I went down to the Baptist Meeting tonight with Geo. Taylor and Clarence Haynie. Frank and Gussie were there.....you know it! Lena Hawkins joined tonight. I put Emma�s picture in my watch today.
Fri., Sept. 15.
Beautiful. I received a nice letter from Juanita today, also a nice, long one from Emma. Answered Emma�s in the eve�s mail. I had my teeth cleaned and also one filled this morning by Dr. Goodwin (cost $1.00 only). I went through the shoe dept. today, and filled-it-up. Cleaned-off center counter of remnants also this eve, for the new �World�s Fair� goods which will be in this eve, or tomorrow morning. I went up to the Baptist Meeting with Geo. Taylor and Harrison Wheeler. It closed tonight. I had the pleasure of sitting by Mabel in Church. The house was full. Sat., Sept. 16. Lovely. Mr. Taylor got back from Chicago (World�s Fair) this morning. I received a letter from Miss Katie Brown today. We got in two-boxes of dry goods this a.m., from Chicago. I walked down to the River this a.m., with Harrison, to see about the goods. Trade dull.....still dusty. Miss Mag Huyett took supper with us tonight. She expects to stay all night with Rettie, and spend tomorrow with her also.
Sun., Sept. 17.
Pretty. I went up home this a.m. and froze a freezer of ice-cream. Got some peaches and some grapes for the table. Miss Mag Huyett is spending the day with us. I got a 24-page letter from Miss Emma this a.m., and answered it tonight with 32-pages. Hers came �due 2-cents!� John Dunlap and self, also Will Lemons, started-up walking to Ireland�s this eve at 2 o�clock. Got back at 6:30. Had a fine time.....lots of peaches and watermelons. Don�t forget our wading with our shoes and socks off!!!!! No, you won�t!!
Mon., Sept. 18.
Dusty...... my goodness! You can�t tell who a person is across the street!! I mailed Emma a 32-page letter today, also samples of our new dress goods. I stenciled and marked the caps and hats today, upstairs. I got four-photos of Emma up at McDougall�s Shop today....those he hadn�t put on cards yet. There was an �elocutionist� at Mertens� Hall tonight. Most of the League went, but I didn�t go. I went to League, tho, and we had a real good meeting......pretty fair crowd, too!
Tue., Sept. 19.
Cloudy. It really rained last night! Mr. Jeter and self cleaned house.....moving everything downstairs. I washed windows and dusted-down. Got through at 5 o�clock this eve. This beat the record!! First time we ever got through it in one-day before. I received a letter from Elbert Dunlap this a.m., and one, also, from Miss Emma, written on Sunday. (I should have gotten it yesterday morning!) I answered it with a few lines in this eve�s mail. Went to Young People�s Meeting tonight. Lena Hawkins and Gilbert Watson were baptized tonight.
Wed., Sept. 20.
Pretty. New goods today by the wholesale! We have been busy all day long opening and marking the new goods. I got a letter from Hallie today. Got a 20-page letter from Emma today, at noon. Answered it tonight with a 16-page letter. Will mail it tomorrow eve.
Thurs., Sept. 21.
Mixed. Marked and put up all my underwear today....ladies, men�s and children�s. I put up a �suspender rack� today. Made a �pump-sack� for the old apple-tree trimmer this eve, out of table-oil-cloth. We had a nice little shower this eve. Maude Wheeler got back from the �World�s Fair� today. It was just one-year ago tonight that I called to see Flora Mertens for the last time!
Fri., Sept. 22.
Mixed. Today is the first-day of Fall. I filled the lines up in Store today, with men�s and ladies� underwear, work-shirts, towels, tablecloths, and stand-covers....with prices-on, and also �sign-cards� dropped below them. I got a 16-page letter from Emma today, and answered it tonight with a 20-page letter. Will mail it on tomorrow eve. Went up to the schoolhouse this eve, with Lem. Got a book from the library. They have moved the piano-up now....furniture also in, too. I went up to see Miss Mollie Kile this eve. Wrote to Mr. Robert Huyett tonight also.
Sat., Sept. 23.
�Election Day� for sheriff! I voted for �Yancy.� I was #44 to vote. Today was real pretty. I received a short note from Emma, this eve, from Wakenda, through Raymond Edmonds, who was over there playing ball today. It has just begun to rain. I intended to go to Wakenda in the morning, on the 6:27 train, but don�t guess now that I will get to go, for it is now coming down hard. Mr. Hightower, 84-years-old, was buried today.....died yesterday morning.
Sun., Sept. 24.
I intended to go to Wakenda this a.m., but, on account of rain, I didn�t go until this eve. Got there at 4:17 o�clock. Went around to see Emma at 4:30. At 6:15, we walked uptown to drugstore, then I went to Hotel after my overcoat. We then went back home, and I had the pleasure of talking to Emma from then until 11 o�clock. I then went to Hotel and retired until 4 a.m. Then I took a buggy down to the River and crossed-over at 6 a.m., Monday morning.....getting to Store, ready for work, at 6:30. Had such a pleasant time. I received a real sweet letter from Emma this a.m., just before I left.
Mon., Sept. 25.
I wrote Emma a short note of 5-pages, and mailed to her this eve. We put the stove up today. It has been real chilly all day. I went to League tonight.....very small crowd, but a good meeting. We practiced singing after League was over. Then I came to my room, where I wrote Emma an 18-page letter, to mail to her on tomorrow. We had a good trade all day long. Mrs. Edna Parsons, Mary Dunlap, Mary Haynie, Mrs. Scott, and Louise, left for Chicago tonight. Jude Hamner and wife, and Sallie.....also Dave and Edna, went on yesterday.
Tue., Sept. 26.
I added 8-pages to Emma�s letter that I wrote last night. Will mail it this eve. I have been working upstairs today, putting out overcoats, blankets, cloaks, and caps. Pet Jeter, Addie Smith, Annie and Minnie Miller, got back from World�s Fair today. Miss Eva, and Mary Zea, won�t be back until the last of the week. I went through the boots, upstairs, both men�s and boy�s. I made out Missionary reports tonight....monthly and quarterly.
Wed., Sept. 27.
I received a letter from Miss Mollie Snelling this a.m., from Dallas, Texas. Also a sweet 26-pages from Emma, today at noon. Will write to her tonight and mail it tomorrow eve. We have been quite busy all day long. I tried to work upstairs, but couldn�t. Mrs. Dr. Morris, Mrs. Henry Bates, Annie, Rosa, and Flora Mertens, all left for the World�s Fair this eve, by way of the Station. I sent Emma a gossamer, by express, today....to Wakenda, Mo. Miss Lou Huyett took supper with us tonight, and spent the night with Rettie.
Thurs., Sept. 28.
I put away straw hats today, and put out winter caps. I sold Will Lemons� a six-drawer-cabinet today. Got the pump, from St. Joseph�s, Mo., this a.m., that Uncle John sent us for the Store. Mr. Jessup, and Papa, put it in this a.m. Mrs. Miller, and Eva, left for the World�s Fair this eve. So Will Andrews, my bed-mate, will sleep down at their house for the next two-weeks, or more. Cleaned upstairs and dusted-down, this eve.
Fri., Sept. 29.
I wrote to Uncle John this a.m., telling him the pump had gotten here. It rained last night, and is raining yet, this a.m. I got a letter from Miss Lilly Conway this a.m., also a letter from Mr. Robert Huyett, to Frank and myself. Got a real sweet 21-page letter from Emma today, at noon. I will answer it tonight. It has rained all day long. I brought the gloves down from the upstairs this eve, and took the slippers up. Wrote Emma a 22-page letter tonight.
Sat., Sept. 30.
It cleared-off right pretty this morning. No trade this a.m., but we had a nice trade this eve. I sent Emma 10-yards of dotted-blue-satin this eve, by mail. Also cut 8 yds. of blue hop-sacking @ 1.00.....38-inches wide. But I didn�t send that, as she said to keep it until she said, �send.� With her dress, this evening, I also sent Emma five beautiful �chromo�s� of cuts of the World�s Fair. They were beauties, I thought. I balanced-up my books tonight, for the end of the month.

OCTOBER

Sun., Oct. 1.
Charles Sohns, Will Lemons, John Dunlap, and self, took a stroll up to the �bottoms� and back, this evening. I killed a black-snake 5-feet long tonight. I got a real sweet 26-page letter from Emma today, at noon. I wrote her a 28-page letter tonight. Today has been a lovely day, so bright and pretty (but also hot). G. N. Jackson and wife, and Dr. Edmonds and wife, left this eve for the World�s Fair, by way of Marshall. I wrote to the Midland Building & Loan Co. tonight, and will mail it tomorrow eve.
Mon., Oct. 2.
I got an awful sweet letter from Emma today at noon (22-pages). Have been out collecting today. Went to our League tonight and we had a very good League....also had a business meeting. I came to my room after League, and wrote a 25-page letter to Emma, in answer to hers of this a.m. Trade dull today. I cut samples of dress-braid to send to Emma on tomorrow, with her letter.
Tue., Oct. 3.
I fixed 10-curtains for Mrs. W. M. Bell this eve. The boss went hunting with Chas. Sohns this eve. We have been kept quite busy most all eve. I talked to Sam Grady and Bob Huyett through the telephone this eve, from Marshall. I mailed Emma�s letter this eve, and the samples of dress-braid. We ushers, Sam Grady, Will Kieffer, Frank Webster, and self, gave Miss Mollie Kile and Mr. Robert Huyett a carving-outfit. We were up to Mrs. Kiles tonight where we had a reception for us ushers. It was just fine, too. We went to Church and practiced at 9 �til 10:30 o�clock, Robt. Huyett stayed with me tonight (came in at 12 o�clock).
Wed., Oct. 4.
Miss Mollie Kile and Mr. Robt. Huyett were married this a.m., at the Baptist Church, at 8:20 o�clock. They took a carriage for Marshall, and then home to Pleasant Green, Mo. Everything passed-off nicely, and the house was full. I got a sweet letter from Emma today (24-pages). I went down to the post office this eve and got me a box for myself (No. 147). We have been quite busy all morning and part of eve. Mr. Jeter was at home, sick, part of this eve. I wrote to Emma tonight, also wrote a few lines to Rob Huyett, and sent him 15-cents that I owed him for the collar he returned. Lem went to St. Louis tonight, and from there he will go to Chicago.
Thurs., Oct. 5.
I mailed Emma a 36-page letter this eve. McDougall got back from the ship. It rained some this eve. Rettie and Mary spent today out in the country. I wrote to Mr. Shipp at Miami Station this eve. I sent him some �cloak-bills� to stick up for us. Got supper at Beck�s tonight, as Rettie didn�t get home in time. I wrote a 7-page letter to Cook. Frank Webster stayed all night with me tonight. Mr. Jeter and I had a �go-round� this a.m., about me going to the World�s Fair. I don�t pay no attention to him, tho.
Fri., Oct. 6.
Received a cute 20-page letter from Emma today, at noon. I mailed Cook�s letter, and also a �cloak-bill� to Miss Emma this eve. I put a cloak-sign on the mirror this eve, also bills around in all the Stores. I wrote a letter to Elbert tonight, and addressed 8-envelopes for Mabel, to him, also. Wrote an 18-page letter to Emma tonight. Frank W. was going to stay all night with me, but he didn�t, for some cause or another....I haven�t heard. The �merry-go-round� came back to winter-here, today.
Sat., Oct. 7.
We have been quite busy most all evening. Mr. Reuben McDaniel died last night, and was buried this eve at Bethel. Mrs. C. G. Ingram is very, very, low. I got a 10-page letter from Emma today, at noon, and I mailed her one this eve. Frank Webster spent tonight with me. I retired at 11 o�clock sharp.
Sun., Oct. 8.
Got up this a.m. at 4:25 o�clock, crossed River and walked to Station. Train was 2-hours, 8-minutes, late, so I took a nice long ride on the �hand-car� with Harrison, up and down the track. I took breakfast with Mr. Shipp. I took the train at 8:15, got to Wakenda at 8:25, and then went around to see Miss Emma at 9 o�clock. I remained until 11:55, then went back after dinner, at 1:30 o�clock and spent until 5:30. We then took a walk down to the schoolhouse and Church, then around uptown, then home, where I remained until 8:30. Then I bid her goodbye, left for train, got to Station, and finally got to Miami at 9:05 p.m. Wib Burns and self walked over to River and crossed at 10 o�clock. I was ready to retire at 10:30, having spent a nice pleasant day with Emma, at Wakenda. Don�t forget the oysters I had to leave, tho, to make the train!! Ha!.. Ha!.. Ha!
Mon., Oct. 9.
I wrote Emma a few lines this a.m. Got a check from the Midland Savings and Loan Co., at Sedalia, for $36.....the amount I had paid-in, which I withdrew. I posted �cloak-bills� this a.m. We have been busy most all evening. The Christian Church commenced a protracted meeting tonight. I went to League, and was on-duty. Wrote to Emma tonight after I came from my League. Lem got home from the World�s Fair this a.m. Hubert Wood stayed with me tonight.
Tue., Oct. 10.
I cleaned upstairs this morning. Mrs. C. G. Ingram died last eve. Will be buried this eve, at 3 o�clock, at Bethel. I returned thanks to the Midland Savings & Loan Co., for the draft of yesterday ($36.00). I got a sweet, 17-page letter from Emma today, at noon. The boss and his wife went to �the burying� at Bethel this eve. I decorated the upstairs this eve, for the Cloak Sale, which commences Thursday. I mailed Emma a letter this eve, that I wrote her last night. The two Miller girls got home from the World�s Fair today, at noon.
Wed., Oct. 11.
I got a letter from Emma today at noon. All of our �cloaks� came this a.m. I have been working on them upstairs most all day long.....getting them in shape for Sale on the 12th-13th-14th. I wrote Ruth Wheeler a note this eve, in regard to a cloak. We had quite a nice little rain tonight, which was needed bad. I wrote a 20-page letter tonight, to Emma, which she will get tomorrow eve, at 4:30 o�clock. Retired at 9:30 tonight.
Thurs., Oct. 12.
First day of our �special cloak sale.� I sold five yesterday. It has been misting most all day, although we have been selling cloaks. The Methodists at Rich Chapel gave a Supper tonight, but they have had a bad night for it. I went down and talked to Syd and George Taylor for awhile tonight, and then went to my room and retired at 9:25. Misty, rainy, dark, and cloudy.
Fri., Oct. 13.
Today has been such a pretty, bright, day! I sent Jackson�s surrey down to the River this eve to meet Emma, who was coming home to stay until Sun. eve. I went over to see her at 7:15 tonight. We went to Church, as the Christians are holding a big meeting. Syd was over, too, tonight, but he left at 10:15 o�clock, and I remained until 11:10. I went off and forgot my glasses, tho. Will send back after them in the morning. Mrs. Scott and Miller got home tonight.
Sat., Oct. 14.
Election Day for Sheriff! It�s the last day for our �cloak sale.� I sold Miss Ruth Wheeler a cloak this a.m., also sold Emma some things, too. We have been real busy all day. I made up my mind to go to the World�s Fair this eve, so I will go tomorrow night. I settled up with the boss, until 1st of October, having a balance of $34.36, by his books, which I drew. I went over to see Emma tonight at 9:30, and stayed until 11:50. Came in, took a bath, and retired at 12:30.
Sun., Oct. 15.
I got myself ready to go to the great World�s Fair today. At 10 o�clock, I went over to see Emma, who was at home, and we went to Church. After Church, I came up home, got dinner at 1 o�clock, and got a lunch that Rettie had fixed, then back to Store. I had Ed meet me at the River at 4:30 p.m., with my grip and things. I went over to see Emma at 3 o�clock, and from there, I left (with Emma, who was going back to Wakenda to teach her school) for the Fair, crossing at 5 o�clock, and getting to Station at 5:30, where I found the rest of the boys waiting for me. Emma and I had a nice, long, ride on Shipp�s �handcar,� up and down the railroad. We then went up in parlor, and had a big time, having music, and then ate dinner with Mrs. Shipp. After supper, I talked to Emma a good while and at 9:05 o�clock, we left for Chicago.
Mon., Oct. 16.
Emma left Station this morning at 6:27, for Wakenda. Bob Casebolt, Geo. Taylor, Raymond Edmonds, John Sibley, and myself, were the crowd that left last night for the Great World�s Fair. We just had a fine time last night on the train....with Miss Gilliam, and others. We changed cars at Decatur this a.m., at 6:15. Got to Chicago at 2 o�clock, sharp. Then went to Wash Folck�s, at 6335 and 6337 Woodlawn Ave., and got rooms, at 75-cents each, for all. We then struck for City, taking the elevated-line to Congress St., and, from there, we walked to Marshall Field & Co., where I bought some cloaks, then took in part of city. We got oysters for supper, and then back to home, where we took in the �Buffalo-Bill Show,� which was just grand. At 10 o�clock, I got back to my room, where I wrote to G. T., Papa, and a short letter to Emma.
Tue., Oct. 17.
This a.m. we got up early, got breakfast, and going down on 64th Street, we mailed our letters on the Street. Got our lunch in boxes, for dinner, and then entered into the Great World�s Fair, taking our first glimpse. The first thing we did was to look through the Transportation Bldg. We then took the inter-grounds railway to the South Loop, where we got off and took in the Fishery Bldg. We ate dinner by the Fire Dept. house. After dinner, we took in the U. S. Government house.....a war ship, life-saving house, then the U. S. Hospital. We saw the soldiers drill. Took in the Electricity Building. Met Frank. We also heard the 13th Regiment Band play.....with 50-pieces! Grand, too, I tell you!! We then came out on 64th St., got supper, and came to our rooms. Dr. Wheeler is boarding at our place, too. Saw him tonight for a few minutes.
Wed., Oct. 18.
Again we struck for the Fair, early, taking in �Midway Plaisance.� First we rode the Ferris Wheel, going around it twice in 16-minutes (264-feet high), at 8:30 o�clock, this a.m. We then went to the end of �Midway P.�, going into �The Streets of Cairo,� bought glass, and saw all the sights that could be imagined. We then took in the Moorish Temple, seeing �Hell and all its torments.� Then saw the grand �skirt-dance.� Then out, and up through the Libby Glass works......this was grand! We ate dinner on the outside, of same. After dinner we went through 23 of the �State Buildings, � and also the �Palace of Fine Arts.� Then Puck�s Buildings, and the Steamship Building. Then we left the grounds, coming out on 64th St., and we got our supper. We returned to our rooms, where I wrote a letter to Emma, and also one to Mr. Taylor. Raymond and John went back to the Midway (climbed fence).
Thurs., Oct. 19.
This a.m., after reaching grounds, we took in the Palace of Mechanical Arts, then the Leather Bldg., then the Shoe Bldg. In these we saw more than I have space to mention here. Then we went to see �Krupp�s Big Gun.� Then saw I was in a ship, or a reproduction of one, that Columbus crossed-in, and discovered America. Next we took the �moving sidewalk� and ate dinner, going around twice before we got off. We then took in the Anthropological Bldg. and, later, revisited and finished-up the Transportation Bldg. Then it was time to come on home, getting oysters on 64th Street for supper. Raymond and John went back out tonight, but I didn�t. Geo. went and got a room elsewhere tonight, for 50-cents. I wrote to Emma tonight, and then took 6-grains of quinine, and went to bed.
Fri., Oct. 20.
Got breakfast and started from room at 6:45 this a.m., for Grounds. Took in Liberal Arts, then the Horticulture Bldg., then the Greenhouse, and Official Guard House. Went back on corner of the Transportation Bldg., and waited for Bob and John, where we then took the elevated-road for the City, bidding the Grounds �goodbye� for good, as we were through. We got dinner on State St., and then went to see the �Battle of Gettysburg Panorama.� Then...all to the City, taking in the main, and biggest, buildings. We went up to B. Kuppenheimer�s, and met Mr. Shafer, who took us through his House, and then onto some of the principal streets, and in some fine houses. He left us for his home then, and we walked around to see where John Sibley bought his horse, at 133 Pine Street. We then returned to Congress Street, got supper, and then home on the elevated-train. I wrote to Emma tonight. Dr. Wheeler went home this eve, and Rogers with him.
Sat., Oct. 21.
We took the �electric rail-road� for the �Stockyards� this a.m., at 7:45 o�clock. Seeing that, we then went thru �Armour�s Packing House,� which was immense. Then took �car-line� for Woodlawn area, where we got our lunches for home. Then took �cable-line� for City, and Union Depot. Then we got dinner at a restaurant. I bought two-baskets of fruit to bring home, for $1.35. We then went to Depot and waited for train at 2:32 o�clock. I saw Lex McDaniel, and Mrs. Harvey, also Capt. John Burruss and Will, who came home with us. We had a �big time� on train. I�ll always remember the police holding us back from crowd, for train, until there was more room for us to pass in. You Know It!!
Sun., Oct. 22.
Raymond, John, and Bob got off this a.m. at Miami Station, but I continued on to Wakenda, to see Miss Emma. Got there at 6:40 a.m. Got breakfast, and sent basket-of-fruit around to Emma, with note. Then I got a shave and went around to see Emma at 10 o�clock. I stayed until 12:15. Got dinner and talked to Mr. Atkinson awhile, and then at 2 o�clock I went around to talk to Emma again. I stayed until the 8:30-�train-time.� Had such a sweet day with her today.....then I took train and got to Depot at 9:05 o�clock, finding Shipp and Harrison had gone....Shipp at World�s Fair. There was a stranger there, so I had to go over and stay all night with him. Left there Mon. morning, with Jim Walden, and got home at 8 o�clock.
Mon., Oct. 23.
Got home this morning at 8 o�clock. Stayed all night at Station last night with the man who took Shipp�s place, while Shipp was gone to World�s Fair. Have been real busy all day straightening things up. I went over to Mertens� twice today to fix some curtains for them. I talked to Miss Ruth a few minutes this a.m., at her home, on the front porch. Got a sweet 29-page letter from Emma today, one she had written me on the 19th. I brought a note from her to Papa this a.m., which she gave me as I left her last night. We didn�t have a League tonight on acct. of Meeting at the Christian Church.
Tue., Oct. 24.
Tina Shelton brought me a note from Emma today. Emma left for the World�s Fair this a.m., going to Keytesville, to go with her aunt tonight. I went through my side today, and rearranged my departments. Today has been quite pretty, and trade has been pretty good. I made two-curtains for the Store-doors today, and the old ones were giving out. I went down to the Christian Church tonight and walked home with Rettie. Got a nice letter from Elbert yesterday.
Wed., Oct. 25.
The boss and Sohns went hunting this morning. I brought up my first wood from cellar this a.m., for the beginning of this winter. Papa left this eve for Springfield, to attend a R. R. Meeting on tomorrow. I did Papa�s work for him tonight. Geo. Taylor, Raymond Edmonds, and self, took a walk over to the corner tonight, first time I have taken a walk over there for months. This is such a beautiful night.
Thurs., Oct. 26.
I cleaned out the big Store wastebasket today after dinner. First time it had been cleaned out for a long time. Took dinner with Lem and Mary today, as Papa was away. I stayed all night up home tonight. Papa will be back tomorrow evening. Today has been quiet and dull, not very many here today. It is getting COLD, too. I wouldn�t be at all surprised if it didn�t turn cold now.
Fri., Oct. 27.
I cleaned upstairs this a.m. I received a nice 3-page letter from Emma this a.m., who is now in Chicago at the World�s Fair. Took some carpet paper up to Mrs. Turpin this a.m. Papa got home today at noon.
Sat., Oct. 28.
Posted �clothing bills� this a.m. Played a piece with the Band today, at Band room. I received a letter from Hallie today, for samples. I had oysters tonight at Beck�s. We didn�t close-up until 10:00 o�clock tonight. Had a nice big trade.
Sun., Oct. 29.
I wrote a 14-page letter to Lina and Hallie this a.m. Also a 6-page letter to Miss Lilly, which I will mail tomorrow, also her spoon I gave her. I didn�t go to Sunday School. Put on my blue square-cut that I wore last winter (to wear again this winter). I received a letter from Cook, and also a letter from Emma, in Chicago. McDougall, Will Lemons, Henry Bure, Jno. Dunlap, and myself, started out �persimmon hunting,� and we got them, too!! Left at 2 o�clock, back at 4 o�clock, this eve. I went up to see Miss Mabel Carpenter tonight. We went to hear Bro. Ginn, then I went around and sat awhile with Miss Maude Wheeler. Miss Mabel gave me her photo today.
Mon., Oct. 30.
We have been pretty busy most all day long. I put up a curtain-pole for Mrs. D. N. Burruss today. Sent Miss Ruth Wheeler a box of persimmons tonight. Talked to her awhile this eve, up at Mrs. Shelton�s. Went to League. Talked to the boys awhile at A. S. Taylor & Sons. Went to Band room and practiced some with Frank and Raymond, and Jim, also. Balanced up my books for October. Put Mabel�s photo in frame, on stand.
Tue., Oct. 31.
Fixed �Special Clothing Sale� sign today. Will put it out in the morning, if wind lays. Wrote to �Pete� this morning. Wrote a letter to Emma, at Wakenda, tonight. She is expected to be at home tomorrow eve, that is, I mean, from Chicago to Wakenda (her home this winter). I went to the Young People�s Meeting, at Baptist Church tonight, with Frank Webster. I gave Lem a check for $16, to pay board and accounts with, tomorrow. It has been awful dusty and windy all day long.

Wed., Nov. 1.
Got a letter from Emma, in Chicago, that I ought to have received yesterday a.m. She is at Keytesville now, and will get to Wakenda this eve at 4:38 o�clock. I wrote her a letter last night which I will mail to her this eve at 2:30 p.m. I have been out collecting this a.m. Geo. Burruss, pilot on the "Mattie Lee," said he saw Miss Emma on the train this eve going to Wakenda (as he was at DeWitt). I went to the Methodist Prayer Meeting tonight, first time for a long while. Had bananas with the boys tonight, at Taylor�s Store.
Thurs., Nov. 2.
I have been out posting �clothing bills� this morning. I received a letter from Emma today at noon. Answered it by this eve�s mail. I shook hands with Mrs. Frank McDaniel this a.m., who is from Colorado. It has been real cold most all day, altho the sun has been out.
Fri., Nov. 3.
I received a sweet letter from Emma in this morning�s mail. It has been spitting snow today, which is the third time in the past week. Fixed the upstairs this eve, for our Clothing Sale, which will be in the a.m. It comes-off on the 9th, 10th, and 11th, of this month. The Methodists had a meeting, upstairs, tonight. I wrote a letter to Emma tonight. There was a �spelling match� out to Miss Mag Huyett�s schoolhouse tonight.
Sat., Nov. 4.
I received a nice letter from sister, Lina, today. Also a cute letter from Emma, at noon. Trade good most all day....a lovely day.
Sun., Nov. 5.
Raymond Edmonds and self started out horseback riding this a.m., at 10 o�clock, going out around Mr. C. C. Ross�, and back by 12 o�clock. I got a sweet letter from Emma today at noon. I started out for the Station this eve, at 2:30 o�clock, to go to Wakenda. Walked to Station in 45-minutes, got to Wakenda at 4:15, and was with Miss Emma until 8:45. Then I left on the 8:53-train for Station, again, where I spent the night with Mr. Shipp, the agent there. Harrison and Mrs. Shipp are over here, visiting for a day or so. Had just an elegant time this eve at Wakenda, with Emma. Left my �World�s Fair Diary� with Emma, to read.
Mon., Nov. 6.
I left the Station this a.m. at 5:50 o�clock, getting to edge of bar at 6:20, and across River at 6:30 o�clock. Met Mr. Davis, and Alvin, going to Kansas City. Had such a lovely morning for my walk. We have been real busy all day. I wrote Emma a few lines this a.m. Will write rest of letter tonight. Rettie and Mary went up to Malta Bend this eve. They will be back Wed. I went over to League and we had a very good meeting tonight. Chatted with the boys awhile, then wrote to Emma.
Tue., Nov. 7.
Today was lovely, but trade very quiet. Had 8-wires made for window today, and made glove display this eve, showing over 50-styles of gloves. Clarence, Frank, Raymond, and self, took a walk over to corner tonight, after having listened to the old Band play quite a little while, which sounded quite natural.
Wed., Nov. 8.
Put up curtains at Mr. John H. Casebolt�s this a.m. Stopped and talked to Belle Burns awhile and gave her her shoes that I put buttons on. I got a letter from Emma this morning, so, as boss was gone hunting, I answered it for this eve�s mail. Rettie and Mary got home this eve. Practiced at the Band room with the boys tonight. Then, Geo., Raymond, Clarence, and myself, took a walk to the end of both corners. Lost my cuff-buttons today, somewhere.
Thurs., Nov. 9.
Today quite pretty and trade good. I got a short, cute, note from Emma today, at noon. Wrote to her tonight. This was the first-day of our �Special Clothing Sale.� Our League had a meeting at Mrs. Miller�s tonight. Had quite a good meeting. We will meet once a month. I walked home with Miss Lucy Gilliam.
Fri., Nov. 10.
I got letters from �Jackard Jewelry Co.,� Kansas City, Elbert, and Miss Emma, this a.m. Mailed Emma a letter this eve. I bought a bushel of pecans this morning from Lee Haynie, for $1.75. Today has been quite pretty and trade pretty-fair.
Sat., Nov. 11.
Emma came down from Wakenda this morning, to stay until tomorrow evening. We have been real busy all day long.......our sales today were $319. I went over to talk to Emma awhile tonight at 9:30 o�clock. Remained until 11:45, and then to the Store I came! Took a bath and retired at 12:30 o�clock.
Sun., Nov. 12.
Mt. Carmel Dedication Day! It actually rained last night.....first we have had for months! I went over to see Miss Emma this morning at 10:30. Stayed until 12:15. I sold Will Taylor a bu. of pecans today, after dinner. Went over to see Emma at 2:35 o�clock, this eve, and stayed until 5:30. I then left for supper, she walking over to Mr. A. L. Wheeler�s with me, to stay until I came back from supper. After supper I came on to Beck�s, got a basket of grapes and bananas, and went by for Emma, then on home, where Syd Taylor and myself just had a fine time until 11 o�clock. We then bid �bye-bye.�
Mon., Nov. 13.
Papa gave me Bob�s fountain-pen last night. Emma went home this eve. Had a little talk with her in Store this a.m. She weighed, this a.m., 138 1/2-pounds. I bought me a nut-cracker this eve. I made a sack this eve, to send Emma some pecans in. The boss went hunting this eve. I led at the League tonight. I filled Emma�s sack of pecans tonight, and printed her name on same....will ship to her by express tomorrow, with nut-cracker and nut-picks inside.
Tue., Nov. 14.
I got a nice 7-page letter from Emma this a.m. Answered it with 11-pages this eve. Boss went hunting. I shipped �B. Kuppenheimer & Co.� clothing today, to DeWitt, by freight.
Wed., Nov. 15.
Received a cute letter from Emma today, at noon. I worked upstairs today, cleaning and rearranging up there after the Cloak and Clothing Sale. Papa was taken sick this eve, so I will stay up home tonight. I wrote 14-pages to Emma tonight. Mr. Thornton, from Carrollton, preached at the Christian Church tonight.
Thurs., Nov. 16.
I received, again today at noon, a few lines from Emma....thanking me for the pecans I sent her. Boss went hunting again. I made some �cash tickets� today (96). They should last until Dec. 23rd, for us-three. Lem is 28-years-old today. Took a walk to the end of Carpenter�s corner with Geo. Taylor, Geo. Burruss, and Clarence Haynie. Then I came on home, where I am now. Wrote a letter to Walter Cook tonight. Stayed with Papa tonight, at home.
Fri., Nov. 17.
I received a letter from Miss Lilly Conway this a.m., from St. Louis. She left there today, for home. I also received a nice letter from Emma today, at noon. Went through the men�s clothing dept. this morning. Stayed up-home again tonight. Wrote Miss Lilly Conway tonight, in answer to her letter of today. Also wrote Miss Emma tonight. It is getting colder this eve.....you know it!! Lem and Mary took dinner with us today.
Sat., Nov. 18.
Miss Rose Ellis, from Marshall, is over visiting the Misses Mertens. Today has been perfectly lovely, but we didn�t have the trade today that we had last Saturday.
Sun., Nov. 19.
Prof. Schumacher and self took a horseback ride this a.m., from 10 to 12, in the �upper-bottoms.� I received a nice letter from Emma today, and also a paper from Lyt, in Calif. I took a walk over to the corner this a.m., and this p.m., with the boys. Prof. Barnett, Geo. T., and self, took a walk up to Bell�s persimmon trees.....only got a few to eat, tho. Geo. Burruss, Geo. Taylor, John Sibley, and self, went down to hear Bro. Nickerson preach tonight.
Mon., Nov. 20.
I wrote to the �Times� today, for album of the World�s Fair. Got a nice letter from Emma today, and mailed her a letter this eve that I wrote on last night. Carried wallpaper over to Mrs. Jno. Burns this morning, for Belle. Mr. Jeter got a little �off� this eve. Fixed a book for the Epworth League, tonight, for Miss Ella Parrish, who is treasurer. Went to out League tonight. Talked to the boys awhile tonight, at A. S. Taylor�s Store. It actually is raining tonight....hard! I wrote a few lines to Emma tonight.
Tue., Nov. 21.
We had a good, big, rain, last night......first �good� one for about four-months. I went through the men�s shoe dept. today. Took a walk down to the River tonight, to see if wallpaper had come, then up to Bell�s, to tell Mrs. Dee Vaughan that it hadn�t come.
Wed., Nov. 22.
Boss went hunting today. I got an awfully sweet letter from Emma today, at noon. I fixed a book label for Miss Ella Parrish�s League-Book, and sent it to her this eve. Clem Watson and self had a few-words this eve, but I, afterwards, had a talk with him, and we straightened it all out. Mr. Jeter had misrepresented me to him, as he (Mr. Jeter) was mad at me. But that is all right.......no one knows what I have had to contend with....with him! I wrote a letter to Emma tonight.
Thurs., Nov. 23.
Have been working in the wallpaper dept. all day long. Mr. Jeter was at home awhile this eve. Today has been the coldest yet. I made my monthly report today, of our �Juvenile Missionary Society,� to Mrs. J. D. Conner, Lexington, Mo. Ed�s father, Frank Thomas and Ella King (col�d) were married today. I went down to A. S. Taylor�s Store tonight, and we had a �big-time� with the boys! Played two-pieces with the �Band-boys� tonight at Band room. I retired at 10 o�clock, sharp.
Fri., Nov. 24.
I received a short, sweet letter from Emma today, at noon. Have been working in the wallpaper dept. again, all day. Didn�t quite finish either. Won�t, until next week! I played a few pieces with the Band-boys tonight, then talked to the boys awhile at our �usual club room,� which is Mr. A. S. Taylor�s Store. At 9 o�clock, I came to my room, and wrote a few lines to Emma. These nights are just perfectly lovely. A protracted-meeting now going on at Mt. Carmel.
Sat., Nov. 25.
Got a few lines from Emma this morning. Today has been very pretty, but somewhat quiet, altho we had a nice little trade this eve. Mailed a letter to Emma, which she will get tomorrow eveing. She went to Carrollton this morning, and will return to Wakenda tomorrow eve. She is staying with Mrs. L. H. Woodson, her aunt, at Carrollton.
Sun., Nov. 26.
I rained most all night long. I went down to see Lem this a.m. I started to write my part of the �drama� we are to play, Xmas. Went down to Mrs. Miller�s this eve, with crowd, to see about our play, and its parts, for each one. I wrote a letter to Miss Emma tonight. Today is the first day I have missed hearing from her. Re-ordered, for �part-two� of Columbian Album, tonight. Part-one came today, and it is good, too!! Walked home with Gussie Edmonds, from Miller�s, this eve.
Mon., Nov. 27.
I wrote to Elbert last night. I received a letter from Emma this a.m., at Carrollton. I mailed her one this eve, that I wrote on last night. The boss went hunting this eve. I made-up an �Emerson�s� and �Steven�s� shoe-list today, for our drummer, tomorrow. Went to League. After it was over, I went to the free-show at Mertens� Hall......�Electric Belt Co.� Show, which was very good. Went home with Rettie.
Tue., Nov. 28.
Had Dr. Switzer fill-a-tooth for me, this a.m. I got a letter from Emma today, at noon.....also one from Miss Lilly Conway. I went over to Mrs. Jno. Burns� this eve, to see about some wallpaper. Went up to G. T. T.�s to see about some hogs he got today, and also about some turkeys that came in. Went up to see Show again tonight, at Mertens� Hall. It wasn�t as good as it was last night.
Wed., Nov. 29.
Went up and fixed the boss� gate, this a.m. Yesterday and today, we took in 22-turkeys, the first of the season. Got in part of our spring wallpaper this a.m., which I have put into stock, and marked. Emma got home this eve. I had surrey to meet her at River. Went over and talked to her until 11:40 tonight. But the Dr. was there, too, talking with Syd, Ruth, and Miss Mary Woodson, and us, too. Syd and I thought we could stay just as long as he did.....and we did, too!!! O!.. We had some good cake!
Thurs., Nov. 30.
Thanksgiving Day! Bro. Bell preached the sermon today, at the Methodist Church. We closed for dinner from 12 to 1:30 o�clock. On the �match-hunt,� our side won, with 500-points above the others (2900 to 2400). Ha!.. Ha!.. Ha!.. Ha!.. Ha! Oysters tomorrow night....off-of-them!!! I called to see Emma this eve, from 4 to 5:45 o�clock. We boys gave �an oyster-supper,� tonight, at Beck�s. Sixteen-couples were there! We had a grand time! I took Miss Emma Wheeler, from 8 to 11 o�clock. I wrote to Newt today.

DECEMBER

Fri., Dec. 1.
Mattie, and the children, came over yesterday eve. Floy and Harry were down this eve, to see me. I gave them a sack of bananas and oranges. Today has been cold....yes, very cold indeed.....4-degrees above zero. I was out collecting all morning. The �hunting-match� supper came-off tonight, at Hotel �De Neill�s (?).� I didn�t go, but walked over to see Emma tonight, at 7 o�clock. Spent a fine evening, too! Met Mrs. L. H. Woodson, as I went in. We had candy tonight (see whose lasted the longest!). You Know It! Ruth Wheeler and Mary Woodson went to the Show at Mertens� Hall.
Sat., Dec. 2.
I went over to see Mrs. Jno. Burns this morning and fixed up two-curtains for Belle. We had our first real snow today. Makes pretty good tracks! Rettie took dinner with Lem and Mary, and Mattie and the children, today. I went up to Mertens� Hall tonight, after we closed-up, and saw a part of the Show. I then walked home with Miss Emma, who was there with her sisters, Miss Lizzie and Miss Ruth. The snow is now very deep and it is still snowing.
Sun., Dec. 3.
Went over and walked to the Christian Church, to preaching, with Miss Emma, this a.m. She went out to Mr. Haynie�s to take dinner, so I walked up as far as the Baptist Church, then she went on with Dick Haynie, and I came on down for my mail. I went down to see Lem this eve. Went over to see Emma at 4 o�clock. At 6:30, I went uptown after some bananas, and then back, where I stayed until a few minutes after 11 o�clock. COLD.....don�t mention it!! Had such a nice time with Emma this eve. Peyton and Wilson were down today.
Mon., Dec. 4.
I talked with Emma a few minutes this morning in the Store. She left this eve for her school, at Wakenda. The River being full of ice, she crossed-over in the boat. Miss Lizzie went back, too. It turned out real pretty this eve, that is....warmer and more pleasant. Jesse Wheeler starts a Drug Store, at Miami Station, today. I went to League tonight, then talked to the boys awhile. Wrote to Emma tonight.
Tue., Dec. 5.
Mr. Jno. Clayton, Sr., hung himself in his barn this morning.....with a halter. G. T. Taylor went hunting this morning. I packed a bbl. of turkeys tonight, also a box, too. I went down to Mr. A. S. Taylor�s & Sons� Store tonight, and talked to the boys awhile. Then I came to Store and wrote to Emma.
Wed., Dec. 6.
I got two letters from Miss Emma this a.m., at 9 o�clock. Should have gotten one of them yesterday, as I had thought. I have been straightening out today, getting in some shape for Christmas. I went down to Mrs. Miller�s tonight, to practice for our play, that we are going to have Xmas, or New Year�s. We were down there until 10 o�clock.
Thurs., Dec. 7.
I mailed Emma a 22-page letter this eve. Rettie went down to Boonville this eve. I wrote to Mrs. Conner tonight, in answer to her postal of this a.m. (Lexington, Mo.) Our Epworth League Literary Society met at G. T.�s tonight. Had quite a nice meeting. After it was over, I walked across the street with Miss Lucy Gilliam, who was staying at Bro. Ginn�s, while he is away.
Fri., Dec. 8.
The boss went hunting today. I commenced boarding at Mr. Beck�s this a.m., by taking breakfast. I fixed a curtain for Miss Ruth Wheeler this morning, in the parlor. I got a sweet letter from Emma today, at noon. Mailed her one this eve. I bought a Bible for Rettie this eve. Talked to the boys tonight, after having returned from the Christian Endeavor. Wrote a 24-page letter to Emma tonight.
Sat., Dec. 9.
Got a few lines from Emma today, at noon. We have been real busy all eve. Wrote to Emma tonight, took a bath, and retired at 12:15 o�clock.
Sun., Dec. 10.
Got up this morning at 9:10 o�clock, as the Sunday School bells were ringing. Didn�t eat any breakfast. Got a �fancy-basket,� from Dr. Dunlap this a.m. - for P= cents - and put a ribbon around its edges, for a Christmas present. I wrote a 32-page letter to Emma this eve, and got one from her today, at noon. Went up home awhile tonight, and talked to Papa. Heard from Lina.....Rettie had gotten there all okay, and she (Lina) was much better. I straightened-up my books, etc., tonight. Didn�t attend Church, or Sunday School, today. Am I not real bad???... Wib.
Mon., Dec. 11.
Mailed Lyt and Sunnie a letter this eve. Also one to Emma. I went down to our League and, as Miss Bertha was not there, I led. I washed and shined the �upright showcase� today.
Tue., Dec. 12.
I got an awful sweet letter from Emma today. We have been quite busy all day long. Got in 19-turkeys today. I shined-up the hdkf.�s case today. Packed the turkeys tonight for the St. Louis market. Went up to Young People�s Meeting tonight. I talked to the boys awhile at the �club room!� Wrote a few lines to Emma tonight.
Wed., Dec. 13.
Today has been cold. I put out Xmas goods tonight. Made a neckwear display in the showcase today. I talked to the boys awhile at �club-room.� We had quite a nice little trade all day long.
Thurs., Dec. 14.
I didn�t get a letter today from Emma. I mailed her one this eve....16-pages. The boss went hunting today. I took dinner with Jesse Wheeler, at Beck�s, today. He came over from Station today, at noon. I washed the showcases today, and also the jet-chimney�s. I went up to Miss Mary Turpin�s tonight, with Buford Casebolt, to practice, but, as many were not there, we didn�t practice, but spent an hour-and-a-half very nicely. I got Mattie Burruss� picture tonight.....ah, you know it!!!
Fri., Dec., 15.
Got a sweet letter from Emma, at noon. Rettie got back from Boonville today. I paid Mrs. Beck $3.50, for board, while Rettie was gone. Today is a dark and cloudy one, I tell you! We got in 31-turkeys and 78-chickens this eve, from Winston Smith. It is turning cold fast tonight. I met with the committee on the Y. P. Prayer Meeting tonight, after the Christian Endeavor Meeting, and we arranged the program for �Week of Prayer,� commencing the 1st of January. I wrote to Emma tonight, at Carrollton.
Sat., Dec. 16.
We got in nine-turkeys today, from Mack Lewis. Mailed Emma a 16-page letter this eve. We were quite busy most all day.....I didn�t get dinner until after 1 o�clock. Packed a bbl. and a box of turkeys tonight.....73-chickens in one bbl., and 4-chix and 9-turkeys in one-box.
Sun.., Dec. 17.
Miss Lilly Conway called me up on the telephone this morning. I had quite a nice little chat with her. I made arrangements with her for the musical tomorrow night. Prof. Schumacher and self took a drive over to Station this eve. We went to meet his father, and I went over to go up to Wakenda to see Emma. I got there at 5 o�clock, and Emma met me at the train. I then went around to Dr. Cunningham�s house, and stayed until train time....left just in time to catch train! I got to Miami Station at 9:15 o�clock, and stayed all night with Walden.
Mon., Dec. 18.
I got home this a.m. at half-past 8 o�clock, and didn�t get to work until after 9. The boss didn�t like it much, but he couldn�t help it. He told me this a.m. that he couldn�t give me the raise I asked for next year, as times were hard. �L�=//� was the best he could do for me unless times got better. We have been real busy all day long. We got in 93-turkeys today. Prof. Schumacher gave a �concert� tonight, in the old Huyett Bldg. I took Miss Lilly Conway to it, who was over from Marshall, visiting Miss Mary Haynie. It was just splendid.....a big crowd there.
Tue., Dec. 19.
We have been real busy all day. I have been getting in turkeys, ducks, chickens, and geese, most all day long. After packing two-barrels tonight, I closed-up. Then I went down to Lem�s, after Rettie. Harrison Wheeler commenced working this eve, to help us out for Xmas.
Wed., Dec. 20.
We shipped four-barrels and 1-box of turkeys (102), 967#. How is that for a shipment??? Today has been quite pretty, but not very busy. I got a letter from Emma this morning, also one from her again at noon. I mailed her �a speech book� and a letter this eve. Miss Annie Kieffer and Mr. W. W. Vaughan were married today, at high-noon, then left for St. Louis tonight, by way of Marshall.
Thurs., Dec. 21.
Got in �silver-plated ware� today. The boss went hunting this morning. I got a sweet letter from Emma today. I mailed her one this eve. We haven�t been very busy today....not many people in town. Harrison Wheeler has got �la-grippe.� I wrote a letter to Emma tonight, but I�ll not write anymore now, until she goes back after New Year�s.....as she is coming home on Saturday morning. You Know It!!!
Fri., Dec. 22.
Miss Maggie Burruss was married Wednesday, at Carrollton, to a Mr. Squares (sp?), near Miami Station. We have not been very busy today, trade somewhat light. I received a real cute letter from Emma today, at noon. I fixed-up a box of oranges and candies (or rather, a nice basket) to give to Emma on Xmas with a nice book I got for her. I watched the boys �box� a little while tonight. Swept out Store tonight....first time for a long while.
Sat., Dec. 23.
We have been quite busy today. Emma got home from Wakenda, to spend the Christmas holidays. I met Mrs. Prof. Barnett�s sister this eve, Miss Ollie Burks. She invited me to the �graduating party� at her house on Monday night.
Sun., Dec. 24.
I went over and went to Church with Emma this a.m. Called on Mrs. Barnett�s sister this eve, Miss Burks, from 3 to 4 o�clock. Frank Webster and self called to see Miss Ella Parrish, and her company, Miss Gussie Royar, this eve at 4 to 5 o�clock. Miss Maude and Landora were there. At 5 o�clock I went over to see Miss Emma, and, after Syd came over, in place of going to Church, we came up to Beck�s and got oysters!! Then went back and spent a very, very pleasant eve....eating cake and pecans. Ah!... You Know It!!!
Mon., Dec. 25.
Christmas DayI received a whisk-broom and holder this a.m. (through Mr. Gillmer) from Miss Lilly. I sent her, in return, a book, �Lady of the Lake.� Emma gave me...O!.. Such a lovely hdkf. and tie-case, just perfectly beautiful. I sent her a book, �Lucille,� and a big basket of candies, raisins, and oranges. I gave Papa...24-sacks of tobacco, a bandana-hdkf., and a box of cigars. To Rettie, a Bible and a box of writing paper. Lem gave me a fine pair of kid-gloves. We Band-boys played on the street this eve, and then tookin part of town until it got dark. I went to the �Xmas Tree,� and then up to Prof. Barnett�s party. Richard took Emma, and I was invited for Miss Burks.
Tue., Dec. 26.
The boss went hunting today. I wrote a few lines to Miss Lilly this morning, in returning thanks for the Xmas present she sent me. I walked from the post office up to Band room with Miss Gussie Royar, this a.m. I talked to Emma this eve, in Store, awhile. I ate oysters at Beck�s tonight. I ordered #5 and #6 of the World�s Fair Albums this eve. I went over and went up to the Social at Bro. Ginn�s, with Miss Emma tonight (that our Epworth League gave). We didn�t stay long, tho. Went back and enjoyed the parlor until 12:15 o�clock. Lovely night....so pretty and bright.
Wed., Dec. 27.
Mr. Jeter went fox-hunting. Trade very, very dull. It has been misting and raining most all day long. Emma and Ruth spent the day at Lawrence Haynie�s today. Emma came by the Store this eve, in buggy, and told me she would go to the party tonight over at Mr. Jno. Burruss�.....a candy-pulling. We rode in wagons here, and went over on the ferry-boat. We just had a fine time!! It was dark going, but all OK coming back. We went at 7 o�clock, and got back at 1 o�clock. Ruth was sick most of the time.....poor girl!
Thurs., Dec. 28.
Mr. Paxton and Miss Sallie Hawkins were married today, at 1 o�clock. They don�t leave until Sat. I made 170 cash-tickets today. Miss Ruth and Emma gave Syd Wheeler and Will Burruss a party tonight. Syd Taylor and self went out and helped them out. We had quite a nice time. G. T. and wife entertained their Sunday School Class, at their house tonight. I cleaned the upstairs today, at Store. Today has been lovely. Got list for Maude Wheeler�s party, for Saturday night.
Fri., Dec. 29.
G. T. went hunting across the River today. �Storm party� at Bell�s tonight, but, as Emma didn�t care to go, of course, I didn�t. Syd and Ruth went, tho. The I.O.O.F. Lodge had their �Oyster Supper� at Huyett�s Bldg. tonight. I straightened-up my books for the Year, this eve. Put program in Epworth League Book this eve, for the coming six-months of the �Year 1894.�
Sat., Dec. 30.
Trade has been somewhat quiet most all day. I received a sweet note from Emma this morning, and answered it. Today has been very pretty. �The Band� - (the kid-Band) played on the street this eve. Mr. Harry Wheeler gave Maude and Landora a party tonight. I went and took Miss Emma. We had a fine time, and a nice supper. Such a lovely night.
Sun., Dec. 31.
Got up this a.m., at 9:25 o�clock. I went over to see Emma this a.m., and stayed until 12:25. Lem and Mary, and Miss Mag Huyett, took dinner with us today. I called again this eve, at 3 o�clock, on Emma again, and remained until 6 o�clock. Then I went uptown and got oysters, at Beck�s, then saw Syd, and we got some bananas and oranges to take over the road....as we went to see the �old year out!� We stayed until about 12 o�clock, and we heard the bells, and, as we had promised the boys we would help them, we left. I spent such a nice day with Emma today. That was too bad that Richard Haynie had to follow her home tonight, just to tell her something foolish!... He is a dandy!!... Bye-bye Old Year!
