(This diary was given me by Pete, (Elbert Dunlap) as a Christmas present.) Lovely day. Today has been somewhat of a busy day with us. Emma was in the Store today (this morning). She goes back to her school at Wakenda this eve, which commences again on tomorrow. She only has three-more-months. I sent her over this eve, just before she left, a nice box of raisins, the finest I think I ever saw. The young people of Miami hold a week of prayer this week, commencing tonight at the Methodist Church. Geo. Taylor leads it tonight. We had quite a nice crowd out. The subject was, New Years Resolutions. I wrote Emma a few lines tonight.
Tue., Jan. 2.
Pretty day. I put away our Christmas goods today. Trade has been awful dull. I got a sweet little note from Emma this morning. I mailed her a letter this evening. I hope and trust she will soon be well. She was perfectly well when she left last eve. I wrote her a letter tonight. I attended the Prayer Meeting tonight at the Baptist Church. The leader was Landora Dick. Subject: The Past Year.

Gloomy. I packed a box of one-dozen turkeys this morning. Added a few lines to Emma Wheeler this eve before I mailed it. The Dr. came home today at noon.....said she was much better. Dr. Cunningham is going to bring her home tomorrow at noon, if she can come. Mr. Jeter took a ride out to Mr. Jno. Snellings this eve, to see a man. Took invoice of boots and shoes we had on hand this eve. I found that we had 1,885 pair. Will Andrews has got la grippe. I went down to our young peoples prayer meeting tonight at the Christian Church. Subject: Christian Union. Leader: Neve M. Ireland. Wrote to Elbert and sent him a dollar for this diary.

Birthday.......Robert Simpson Myers, b. 1860; d. 1892. I received a note from Emma at Wakenda this morning. She came home today, at noon....sick. She wrote me a note and sent it over this eve by Miss Ruth. I put out a remnant counter this eve, of 70-pieces. Mailed Elbert a letter this a.m., with $1.00 in it to pay for this diary. I wrote Emma a few lines this eve and sent it over to her just before I went to supper. I went to the Young Peoples Prayer Meeting tonight, which was at the Baptist Church. Subject: Search the Scriptures. Leader: Clem L. Watson. We had a good crowd out and a good meeting. Wrote Emma a few lines tonight that I will send to her on tomorrow sometime.
Fri., Jan. 5.
Cloudy and pretty. We have not been very busy today. Miss Ruth came up and brought me a note from Miss Emma this a.m. I sent her one over this eve. There is a party out at Sibleys tonight (John and Freds). I was very sorry that I didnt get to go, but on account of the Prayer Meeting I thought best not to go. Lots of the girls didnt get to go on that account. I went down to our Meeting tonight, which was at the Christian Church. Subject: Missionary Work. Leader: Miss Mary Shelton. We had a good meeting and a big crowd. I wrote a few lines to Emma tonight that I will send over tomorrow morning.
Sat., Jan. 6.
Bright and pretty. I sent my note to Emma over this morning, by Syd Wheeler. He also gave me one from her, in exchange. I gave Syd a book by Hoyle today, a book of all games. Trade has been very dull today. No one in town, hardly. Rev. Wilson, the new Christian preacher, came this morning to take Bro. Nickersons place. I went down to our Young Peoples Meeting tonight, at the Methodist Church. Subject: Consecration. Leader: Miss Jeanie Leftwich. Tonight closed our Meeting. The Methodists commence a protracted meeting here tomorrow.
Sun., Jan. 7.
Birthdays: Daisy Duggins - 1873. Mary Haynie - 1871. I got up this morning at 10-minutes after 8 oclock, washed and dressed, made up my bed, and dressed it clean. Straightened up my room, got ready and went over to see Miss Emma Wheeler from 10 til noon. I had not seen her since she had gotten home, which was on Thursday, at noon. After having gotten my dinner and dried the dishes and set the table for Rettie, I came down to the Store and wrote a letter to Lina and Hallie this eve. I took a walk down to the graveyard this eve....also a walk up to Carpenters corner. Then I went down to see Lem and Mary, came back as far as the Baptist Church with Rettie, then came down to Becks and got oysters. Then, at 6 oclock, I went over to see Emma and stayed until 9:05 oclock. She is getting along nicely now.
Mon., Jan. 8.
Pretty day. Trade dull. Got in a new lot of Spring-hats (25 boxes). Mr. Burnsides smoke-house burned down this eve. Miss Ruth was uptown this eve and came in and brought me a note from Miss Emma. Dr. Cody, the eye-doctor from Marshall came over today to stay a few days with us. I marked and stenciled the hats and put them away this eve. The Methodists commenced a Meeting here yesterday. I went down to Church tonight. We had League Meeting after Church was over. We had a good meeting and a very nice little crowd. I walked over home with Miss Emma after it was over, but did not go in.
Tue., Jan. 9.
I got up this a.m. at 6:15 oclock.....helped to clean out and dusted down my cornice before breakfast. Emptied a six-drawer spool-cotton cabinet that we sold to Sam Grady today. Cleaned out front window and washed back window this eve. Trade dull, but a lovely day. The Methodists are having morning meetings at 10 oclock. I went down to the Methodist Meeting tonight. Syd Taylor, who went home with Miss Ruth from Church, said that Emma expected me over tonight, and also looked for me. He also brought me a note from her. I was very much surprised for I did not understand it to be that way, or I would undoubtedly have been there. I cant count for it.....
Wed., Jan. 10.
Lovely day. I sent Emma a note this morning in regard to last night. Mr. Jno. Burns is very sick at home. I received another note from Emma this a.m., and answered same this a.m. I will go over tonight. We got in seven nice-dressed-turkeys this eve. Trade has been quiet this day. I commenced on a new wallpaper book this evening...out-and-out. I went over to see Emma this eve at 7 oclock, and remained until 10 oclock. We made things all OK as to last night. I spent a very pleasant night, or eve, rather. Ahem!!!!
Thurs., Jan. 11.
Dusty, but lovely. One year ago today.....Jacob Greenabaum shot himself. Trade dull. I made two wallpaper books today, one for remnants and one for samples of stock. I sent a card over to Miss Rosa Mertens this a.m., for Clutterbuck. Went to Church tonight and, after it was over, I walked home with Emma. The Doctors new furniture came tonight. Syd Taylor and I unloaded it for him tonight as we went over after Church. I think there is going to be a wedding there about next month some time......you know it!!!
Fri., Jan. 12.
Lovely. But dull, dull, DULL!! Today has been real pretty, but the dust has been blowing bad. I finished the wallpaper books today. Miss Jean Lent, Mrs. Sidenstrickers sister, died today at 2 oclock, of la grippe. Rettie and myself were going down to Marys tonight, to pull candy, but she is sick so we will not go. I went over the road and went to Church with Emma. Miss Mary Haynie is with Ruth tonight. Syd was over too, so you know we had a good time. We took our departure at 10 oclock-and-five-minutes.
Sat., Jan. 13.
Trade very dull! Looks like rain. Miss Jean Lent was buried today at the Methodist burying grounds, at 3 oclock. Funeral at grave.
Sun., Jan. 14.
Disagreeable. Did not get up this a.m. until 9:25 oclock. Got dressed, shaved, and cleaned up my room and made my bed. Got the mail and went to dinner, stopping by to see Miss Lucy Gilliam for Capt. A. R. Ruxton as I took the Boss his mail. After dinner I got ready and went over and talked to Emma at 3 oclock, and remained until half-past 5 oclock this eve. I then came up to Becks, met Syd, and we had oysters. Then after supper, Syd and self went over for Church. We went to hear Bro. Ginn. It is drizzling rain and is dark and foggy. I do hope it will rain. We had fine cake tonight, also a box of nice candy.......go way, wont you!!! Ahem!!!
Mon., Jan. 15.
Cloudy and foggy. Today has been a very disagreeable day.....foggy and damp. Trade slow. Made a stand, or platform, rather, for top of table at front window today. And made a hat display this eve. Loaned Miss Eva Snelling my Worlds Fair books today. Rev. Ferris, from Marshall, came over this eve to help Bro. Ginn in his Meeting. There was a slight-of-hand-performance at the Hall tonight, but I dont think it was much! I went to Church tonight and, after it was over, I walked home with Rettie and then went back to our League Meeting at Church (which was after Church). After that was over I walked home with Emma. Miss Ruth took me upstairs tonight to see their room. How nice it was...papered and fixed-up. I stayed with Emma until 10 oclock.
Tue., Jan. 16.
Today has been just like a summer day...so nice and pretty and warm. There is not much trade going on though. Times seem to be very slow. Paid $5.00 into Building and Loan Company today. Retta and myself went down to Lems tonight to pull candy. We pulled nine-plates of nice sugar candy.....good, too! We came home at half-past 9 oclock. These nights are perfectly lovely. I met Ruth and Emma going to Church as I went down to Lems tonight. Annie Miller came up tonight for Church. I took invoice of spool cotton on hand today. We had 1008 dozen. How is that for spool cotton??
Wed., Jan. 17.
Today has been quiet. Old Uncle Jimmy Irvine was buried at the Christian Graveyard this eve. Today has been part lovely, the other part somewhat mixed. In cutting some candy that we made last night, I cut my thumb very deep, so I can hardly write or do anything else with it today. Another Show struck this place today. It will show here on tomorrow night at Mertens Hall. The "Charity-Cause" met this eve at Hall to do something for the poor. I went down to Church tonight and heard Bro. Ferris. After Church was over, I walked over home with Emma, and Syd was with Ruth. We went in and stayed until after 10 oclock. Lovely nights.........
Thurs., Jan. 18.
We certainly are having some lovely weather now, and have been all winter! People are going to plowing as the weather is so pretty. I ordered #s 9 and 10 of the Worlds Fair Albums today. Got in Emersons Fine Shoes today. Also got in my pair of patent leather lace shoes.......they are daisy! Miss Eva Snelling returned my W. F. Books this eve, and, as she went to supper, I walked up home with her. Mrs. Barnett invited me up to their house to take dinner on Sunday. I went down to hear Bro. Ferris tonight for the last time. He is going home tomorrow. Bro. Ginn will continue the Meeting. I walked home with Emma and went in.....remained until 10 p.m. this eve. Sallie Hamner brought me a package of nice cake this eve.
Fri., Jan. 19.
Well....we have at last gotten rain after about four months of dry weather. It certainly was appreciated by all. It has been raining ever since 11 oclock this a.m. I got a letter from Elbert and Frank today. I went over to see Miss Emma tonight at 7:10 oclock and returned at 9:45. I spent a real sweet night. Dont you forget it was raining when I came home.....just pouring down! The Show that was here didnt show tonight. Mr. Jackson took Rev. Ferris back to Marshall today. Perhaps he will return on Monday, but dont know for certain yet.
Sat., Jan. 20.
Today certainly has been a rainy day. No trade to amount to anything. I received a letter from Elbert this a.m., with $1.00 in it that I had sent him for this diary. He intended it for a Xmas present to me, but I did not know it. Side-Show in town tonight. I renewed for the News today, until 95, for Rettie. Also paid Leftwich for the Week of Prayer programs and got my order in for $1.50 on it. I paid him 50-cents difference. Syd Taylor said I wouldnt get my $1.50 from him - but I did, you bet!! A dark, gloomy evening. Went to Show tonight at Mertens Hall and it was pretty good.
Sun., Jan. 21.
Today, I know, must have surprised everybody......for the last two or three days have been somewhat disagreeable (foggy and so cloudy, and it poured down all day yesterday), but today is lovely! I took dinner today at Prof. Barnetts, with Laura Carpenter, Magg Kile, Landora Dick, Maude Wheeler and Pet Jeter. I was the only boy, so you know I was strictly in it!!! We walked over to the schoolhouse in the eve, and heard Prof. Shumacher, Wib Burns, and Raymond Edmonds play. Mrs. Barnett just had a lovely dinner for us. Gussie Edmonds was there also. Her and I drew up a contract as to marrying. O!.. It is a daisy....you know it!! After returning from the schoolhouse I walked home with Maggie Kile....to Parrishs, and from there to Mr. Harry Wheelers. I walked with Miss Mabel Carpenter. I then came on downtown and got ready to meet Miss Ruth and Miss Emma at Dr. Gradys. So I walked over home with them, and Emma and I carried wood into the parlor. We then went to the Christian Church to hear the new preacher, Bro. Wilson.
Mon., Jan. 22.
Miss Emma was in the Store this a.m., and brought me a box of donuts. I stencilled the wallpaper this eve and will put it in the sample book tomorrow. Today has been real pretty and bright, but cold. Miss Emma went out to Mrs. Josh Reynolds this eve to help fix for the wedding on Wednesday night of Miss Alice (Reynolds) and Mr. Chiswell. I went down to the Meeting but it was over, so I went to League Meeting, and, after it was over, I walked down home with Miss Eva Miller. We had a real good League Meeting tonight....quite a little crowd stayed with us after Church. Papa gave me his picture tonight. It is real good, too!

It commenced snowing this morning and has continued all day. It is the first snow we have had this winter that has amounted to much. I wrote a letter to Elbert this a.m., while the Boss was at Church. Mr. Jeter went home at dinner and didnt come back at all this eve.....he has been sick all day. It dropped from 10-degrees above - to zero- in four-hours this eve. How is that for cold??? I wrote a letter to Frank Webster tonight. Didnt go to supper as it was so cold. The Boss went home at half-past four oclock. This will be the coldest night of all tonight. Two-inches of snow have dropped so far. I went down to Church tonight. Syd Taylor, Geo.
