FROM THE MIAMI NEWS.....April, 1902
"The Miami Fire"
On the evening of Friday, April 4, 1902, Miami was visited by the most destructive fire in the history of the town. As a result, one of her handsomest business blocks is now in ashes.
The fire originated on the second floor of the Saufley building, on the east side of High Street, occupied by Messrs. Taylor & Wilson as a general merchandise store, and by John A. Dunlap, lawyer. The first alarm was given by John Hamner at 10 p.m., and the entire citizenship of the town responded. There is a difference of opinion among citizens who arrived earliest as to the exact location of the flames. Dense smoke prevented entrance to the second floor.
In a short while the fire was communicated to the adjoining building, owned by A. R. Edmonds and occupied by R. A. Dunlap, druggist, and the Miami News.
From the first the volunteer firefighters, under the leadership of Henry W. Mertens, saw little hope of saving the brick block. they devoted themselves to the almost superhuman task of saving the row of frame buildings immediately south, and adjoining the doomed block. the first of these, owned by Ayres Brothers and used for a meat market, was aflame several times, but with the aid of a south wind and by heroic efforts of the bucket brigade the progress of the flames was checked and at 2 a.m., the other buildings were out of danger.
Very little was saved from any of the houses. It is difficult to estimate the loss. A fair valuation of all the property would approximate $20,000. The aggregate amount of insurance is $14,300. The losses are distributed as follows:
Naylor and Wilson, general merchandise, valued their stock at something over $8,000. They had $6,000 insurance.
John A. Dunlap's library, papers, and personal effects were valued at $600. Total loss.
Justice L. W. Haynie lost the docket, books and papers pertaining to his office.
The Missouri & Kansas Telephone Company suffered a small loss.
The building occupied by the above tenants was owned by the Saufley estate. Mrs. M. J. Saufley had $2,000 insurance. The building and plant can probably be replaced for $6,000.
The Saline County Telephone Company was considerably damaged.
The building owned by Ayres Brothers was damaged by falling walls. They had $300 insurance.
The stock of J. Burns & Son, hardware, was damaged somewhat by moving. Mr. Burns had no insurance.
Taylor & Wilson will resume business if they can secure a suitable building.
R. A. Dunlap will open a new stock of drugs in Dunlap's Hall. Both telephone offices will be located there.
The Miami News has purchased a new outfit, and moved into the frame building on College Street, owned by Dr. A. A. Wheeler.
John A. Dunlap will have offices in the Mertens Building.

ANOTHER FIRE IN MIAMI.....
[There was no date on this article, but it was pasted on the same page as other 1902 stories, so I am including it here...mld]
BRICK HOTEL BURNS
Fire was discovered in the southeast corner room on the second floor of the old Brick Hotel, at 2 o'clock last Saturday morning, and in a short time the entire building was in ruins. The building belonged to the Watson estate and was occupied by Mrs. S. E. Watson, Mrs. Emma Garrett, and Jerome and Frank Rudd. Mrs. Watson carried $1000 insurance on the building and $300 upon household goods. Mrs. Garnett's loss is estimated at $50. The Rudd boys had rooms on the first floor and saved all their property.
The cause of the fire is unknown. It resulted in the destruction of another of Miami's old landmarks. This hotel was built upon the ruins of another which burned in 1850. The first consisted of four rooms in a row, constructed of logs, and was one story high. It was owned by Deacon Parsons and managed by James Hicklin. At the time of the fire in 1850 three newly-married couples were being entertained - Dr. and Mrs. J. N. Dunlap, Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Pendleton, and Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Edwards.
the brick building was erected the same year, or the year following the fire, and was very substantially built. For nearly half a century it was used as a hotel and was the scene of many festivities and probably one or two tragedies. The earliest newspaper mention of it, that we have been able to find, was in the Democrat Cable of April 30, 1870, which referes to it as "the Wilson House, a large and commodious brick, kept by Joseph Wilson, Esq., late of Texas." In recent years it has been used as an apartment house and occupied by several families.

ANOTHER UNDATED FIRE REPORT.....(pasted on the 1902 page)
Fire about 11 o'clock p.m. Monday completely destroyed the general merchandise store of J. W. Weir at Miami Station. The alarm was given by a passing train on the Wabash. The origin of the fire is unknown. Mr. Weir valued his stock at $1700 and carried about $1200 insurance. He has not decided yet whether he will resume business. The building was owned by Charles Underwood and insured for $400. It was erected several years ago by Syd Taylor and valued at $800.
