NOTE: This Diary, from Jan. 1st to May 13th, is written in a very small book (2 1/2 " by 5 "), the same book that was used to record the membership and expenses of "The Fancy Work Club," of Miami, MO. Therefore the initial entries will be noticeably more concise than in previous diaries.

JANUARY

Mon., January 1, 1906
Lovely, but cool - 36-degrees. Coldest a.m. yet. Took the 10 a.m. car to L. A. Took in Penny Music Store. Dinner at Godfrey's. Rode out to East Lake Park. Back to town and took in matinee. Good! Had ice cream for lunch. Home on the 5 p.m. car and spent the eve at home. Letters from Cyrena and Ruth at Miami. Also letter from Mary Weir, at Mexico, Mo.
The Streetcar to Whittier Tue., Jan. 2.
Coldest a.m. yet, 33 degrees. Big frost. Today has been real pretty. Trade fine all day, over $100. At Store tonight until after 10 p.m. The Business Men met tonight to see about the closing. Robert got a nice letter from Auntie Hays today.

Wed., Jan. 3.
Another lovely day....warmer. Trade nice all day, $67. Lem at L. A. all eve. Emma worked on our tickets for us this afternoon. She and Robert at home tonight. I got home at 8:45. Emma got letters from Mrs. J. B. C. [her sister, Mrs. Cunningham] and Mrs. M. L. B. [Mrs. M. L. Burns].
Thurs., Jan. 4.
Lovely. Quite a good deal warmer. Trade nice, $67. Lem at Los A. all day. Miss Gallion went home at noon, not well. Emma helped us all eve. We ate our supper over at the restaurant tonight. Home at 8:45 p.m. Emma got a new pair of slippers tonight.
Fri., Jan. 5.
Lovely day. Miss Gallion absent this a.m., but with us all eve. Trade fine all day, $75. Finished taking down all our decorations tonight. Emma went to choir practice tonight with Mrs. J. Home tonight at 10 p.m., tired and worn out.
Sat., Jan. 6.
Lovely day. Mrs. Thos. Mattingly and Mrs. Mitchell came this morning and I took them up to Mrs. Fry's. Trade today very nice all day, $173. Emma helped us this afternoon and again tonight. I got a nice long letter from Mrs. C. G. Vaughan this eve. Home at 10:30 p.m.
Sun., Jan. 7.
Lovely out this a.m. Warm and pleasant. Emma and Robert at Sunday School. Papa came in and talked with me until 11 a.m. I stayed at home all a.m. Lem came by at 11 a.m. and took Robert and I for my first ride out in east Whittier. Came back and had dinner. Emma and Robert and I took our first livery ride this eve, around Whittier and into Rivera. Back at 5:15 p.m. We spent the balance of the day and night at home.
Mon., Jan. 8.
Such a beautiful day! Trade very, very nice, $82. I cleaned off my front window and the top of my dry goods shelving. Lem fixed our pattern dept. up by the front door today. Mary went to Long Beach tonight, to stay until tomorrow eve. Emma and Robert were out calling this afternoon. I got a nice letter from G. T. Taylor today.
Tue., Jan. 9.
Lovely, lovely! Trade was very, very quiet. Though, in all, we ran a little past the $50 mark. Lem at Los Angeles this afternoon. Papa took dinner and supper with us today. Emma helped us this afternoon at the Store. We announced a big "8-day Sale" this eve, opening Saturday. I mailed Margaret some paper books and ribbons today. Also, to Newt and Cyrena, a paper each. Little Robert opened a bank account today, with First National Bank, $10.
Wed., Jan. 10.
Nine months ago today we left old Miami. I done quite a good deal of work today. I changed both windows for our big Sale. Emma printed a sign and price cards for us all eve. We got in a lot of new goods today. There was a big Negro Show in town tonight. I came home tonight feeling real, real bad.....I believe I had a chill.
Thurs., Jan. 11.
I didn't get up until late. Feel awful. My back hurts me so. I went up to the Store and stayed awhile this a.m., but had to give up at 11 a.m. I came home and went to bed. I suffered all eve with my back. I had to call in Dr. Marshburn at 6 p.m. I soon got relief. Had a good night's rest. Papa down awhile this eve, late.
Fri., Jan. 12.
I didn't get up until 8 a.m. Feel a great deal better, but am very, very weak. I spent the whole day at home, taking medicine. Emma and I printed quite a lot more signs and price cards today at home and she took them up to the Store late this eve. I got a nice letter from Retta today and answered it. We were all up at the Store tonight awhile, closed up at 6 p.m. and fixed the Store different.
Sat., Jan. 13.
It rained last eve and most all last night, and is still raining this a.m. I went up to the Store at 9 a.m. I felt a great deal better today. It rained most all day. Trade fine, though. This was our first Sale Day. We sold 49 pair of shoes......a $303 day. We had all that eight of us could handle. Emma helped us all eve and we took supper at the restaurant today. Home at 10 p.m. Mr. Reid also helped us out this eve, late.
Sun., Jan. 14.
Opening of Venice today! Up at 7:45 a.m. It rained all night and some this a.m. Breakfast at 9:30 a.m. At home all morning. Cloudy awhile and the sun out for awhile. We ate dinner at 2 p.m. Spent the afternoon and night at home. Lem, Mary, and Lewis were here for awhile this eve. I rested good all day. We retired at 7:15 p.m. Still raining some.
Mon., Jan. 15.
Drizzling rain all morning. The evening was pretty. I stopped at Dr. Marshburn's as I went back to the Store at noon, and gave him a check for $2.50, my first doctor bill in Calif. Today trade was fine. We waited on 187 people and sold $197. Emma and Mary helped us all eve. We commenced closing at 6 p.m. this eve. It is real good to be at home!
Tue., Jan. 16.
Lovely day. Busy all day long. We waited on 223 people today and sold $223. Had all we could handle all day. Emma and Mary helped us all eve and then we could not handle it all. We closed, as usual, at 6 p.m. Came home and had a good warm supper and spent the eve at home.
Wed.,. Jan. 17.
Lovely day. Trade, $197. All we could handle all day long. I did not get the Store straight tonight until 9 p.m. Emma, Robert and I took supper at the Restaurant tonight. Home at 9 p.m. Feel very, very tired and worn out! Mr. Thomas Utley of Miami was here today.
Thurs., Jan. 18.
Gloomy and rainy all day. I remained at home all morning. Emma was at the Store helping today. I went up and spent the eve. Trade was $105, even if it did rain all day. We got notice that about $10 worth of goods belonging to us was found in a Mexican's picked (robbed of last week). I feel awful bad again tonight.
Fri., Jan. 19.
It rained all night long and yet this a.m. Lewis just brought us a nice basket of oranges. Papa dined with us today. I spent all day at home. Emma was at Store this eve. I wrote a long letter to Newt. It cleared up this eve. Trade fine at Store all day, about $150. We were all at home tonight. I feel a great deal better tonight.
Sat., Jan. 20.
Almost a perfect day! Feel fine today. At Store all day long. We had all we could do all day, with nine clerks on the floor. This was the largest day yet ever in Whittier, $476.57. This was the last day of our big "seven days sale." Home tonight at 11:20 p.m. Emma, Robert and I took supper at the cafe. Emma, Mary, and Lewis helped us all eve.
Sun., Jan. 21.
Somewhat cloudy. The sun came out now and then. Emma and Robert went to Sunday School. I stayed at home and took a bath. I feel very good this a.m. I surprised Emma with cake and cream for dinner today. We had a chicken dinner. Papa dined with us. We took a little walk this eve and stopped at the Store. I wrote to Retta this eve, and mailed it. We attended the Friends Meeting tonight.
Mon., Jan. 22.
Another pretty day. We cleaned up and took things down after our big sale. I made one "Lace Curtain" window this eve, late, and cleaned the other window out for new ginghams, for tomorrow. Emma sewed for Robert all evening. She got a letter from Syd this eve. We ate supper at 7:45 p.m. I played with Robert a long while tonight.
Tue., Jan. 23.
Lovely a.m., but cloudy eve. Lem was in Los Angeles all eve. Trade only fair. We commenced invoice this a.m. I made a gingham and white goods linen window today. We overhauled Lewis' candy case this eve. I got a nice letter from Retta today. Emma was up and came home with me tonight. Lewis was at home all day, sick.
Wed., Jan. 24.
Very, very pretty all day. Trade nice. We got in quite a lot of new spring goods. We were busy invoicing all day. Robert and I dined at the cafe today. Emma and Mrs. Chapple attended "Way Back East" up in Los Angeles this afternoon. Lewis still at home, sick. Emma got a box to [wood] burn for Syd this eve, also a little hammer for Robert.
Thurs., Jan. 25.
Real pretty all day. Very, very warm. Trade fair. We were busy invoicing all day. Lew was up to Los Angeles all eve. Mary was down tonight and brought her burning-lamp to Emma. Emma done her first "burning" on the box for Syd tonight. Robert was indoors all day with a bad cold. Papa was down to see Robert this eve.
Fri., Jan. 26.
Lovely day. Very, very warm. Trade nice all day. Andrews and I got all the dress shirts, underwear and work shirts invoiced today. Papa gave Emma a lovely handmade pedestal this eve, that he made himself. Home at 6:30 p.m. and remained for the night. Emma did a lot of cleaning up today. I worked over Emma's flower bed this a.m.
Sat., Jan. 27.
Lovely day. Trade fair, $114. We got quite a good deal of invoicing done today. Did not get home until 10 p.m. Emma and Robert both have bad colds. They stayed at home tonight. I brought our "new lamp" home tonight. But we don't like our new green bowl on it at all. Will have it changed this week.
Sun., Jan. 28.
Today has been a lovely day. So very, very warm. Emma and I got up early and I helped her with the work. Did not attend Sunday School or Church today. We gave Papa a little birthday dinner today. We had Lyt, Sunnie, Hazel, Lem, Mary, Lewis, and Papa here. Emma had a good dinner. Lyt and Sunnie went home on the 5:45 p.m. train.
Mon., Jan. 29.
Papa is 78 years old today. This morning it was very, very foggy. Though it cleared up at noon and was lovely the balance of the day. Trade fair. Emma was up awhile this eve and helped us invoice. Miss Gallion and us all worked tonight until 9 p.m. I walked home with Miss Gallion. Emma and Robert were at home tonight. We finished the ginghams tonight.
Tue., Jan. 30.
I put a plaster on my back last night. Commenced wearing flannel underwear this a.m. Lovely out. Trade has been very quiet all day. Though we have done fine on our invoice. Lem was in Los Angeles all afternoon. We all worked tonight until 10 p.m. I walked home with Miss Gallion and Miss Wing tonight.
Wed., Jan. 31.
Today has been a lovely day. Trade fair. Got a good day of invoicing done today. We worked again tonight. Emma helped us. Lem bought himself a rubber-tire runabout and a new harness today.

FEBRUARY

Thurs., Feb. 1.
Lovely, lovely out. Trade today nice. We invoiced all the dress trimmings, hamburgs, and part of the laces. We also finished up the underwear dept. in full and part of the ladies room. Worked tonight until 10 p.m. Lyt sent us a nice box of apples today. Emma got a nice letter from Cyrena today. Ben Reynolds got home last Friday.
Fri., Feb. 2.
Lovely day. Very, very warm. It was Anniversary Day at the Restaurant today....."turkey dinner" for 25-cents. We got lots of invoicing done today. Worked tonight until 10:30 p.m. I walked home with Miss G. and Miss W. Letters today from Mary Haynie and Mrs. Miller.
Sat., Feb. 3.
Up early and cut weeds from the path to the stable. Trade today was slow all day, but tonight, up until 11 p.m., we had all we could handle. Done very nicely on the invoice all day, but did not get done. This has been another lovely day. Emma wrote to Lyt, thanking him for the nice apples.
Sun., Feb. 4.
Up at 7 a.m. We had breakfast at 8:30 p.m. Got ready and we took the car at 10 a.m. for Los Angeles and then out to Venice. It was cloudy with some little rain in the afternoon, so we came home at 3 p.m. Got to Whittier at 5 o'clock. Had lunch at 6. Emma, Robert and I attended the Congregational Church tonight.
Mon., Feb. 5.
It was pretty most of the day, but later in the eve it got cloudy and tonight we had a shower. Trade today was only fair. Miss Gallion was at home, sick, all day. Emma helped us all eve, also tonight. I walked home with Miss Wing tonight. Papa took supper with us this eve. Home at 10 p.m.
Tue., Feb. 6.
Pretty morning, cloudy afternoon. Trade quiet all day. We got in lots of dry goods today, and a big lot of shoes. Busy all day. Finished invoice today at noon. We had the largest rainfall and lightning this afternoon that we have had since we have been in Whittier. Emma and Robert up tonight and helped me with the new goods. Emma and I bought four Valentines tonight for Robert.
Wed., Feb. 7.
Lovely out after the big rain last eve. Trade fine. Lem and Pierce worked all day on the shoe dept. I worked the dry goods in on my side. We did not go back to the Store tonight. Emma attended the "Ladies Club" meeting this eve. I mailed a McCall's Magazine to Retta this eve.
Thurs., Feb. 8.
Somewhat cloudy. Trade fair, about $70. We put the invoice all on the book today. I cut and fixed 36 of our new lace boards this eve. Miss Gallion commenced rolling them this eve. We got home at 6:30 p.m. for the night. Emma got a letter from Miss Lou, in St. Louis, today. She is there with Dr. Wheeler, about his eyes.
Fri., Feb. 9.
Today has been a lovely, lovely day. Trade, though, quiet. Mr. J. P. Armstrong closed all day today and will be closed tomorrow for his "Closing Out Sale," which opens Monday for 3-weeks.
Sat., Feb. 10.
Gloomy day. Rain most all day. Armstrong was closed all day. Our sales were $107 today. We got in a good day of winding laces and such on our new boards. Emma and Robert at home tonight. Received a letter from Retta. Home at 10 p.m. and bathed.
Sun., Feb. 11.
Up at 7 a.m. We all attended Sunday School, then I came home with Robert. Emma stayed for Church. I wrote to Mrs. Scott & Miller. Papa took dinner with us. We had a nice long walk this afternoon. I wrote to Retta today. We attended Church tonight at the Congregational Church. I gave a $3 temperance pledge.
Mon., Feb. 12.
Armstrong's big Sale opened today. They locked the doors awhile. Our trade was nice all day, $127... (It beat Saturday). It rained this morning and evening. Emma and Robert up and came home with me tonight. Emma made us some fine candy tonight.
Tue., Feb. 13.
Pretty out for awhile, then gloomy. Trade very nice, about $87. Miss Gallion was away today. Lem was in Los Angeles this eve, so Emma helped us this eve. Mrs. Wing and Doctor were here tonight and we played Flinch. Retired at 10:30 p.m.
Wed., Feb. 14.
"Valentine's Day." All kinds of a day....rain awhile, sunshine awhile. Trade was fair all day. I cut a big lot of boards this a.m., up at the printing office, for our laces. Mr. Pierce was in Los Angeles all eve. We had Robert's photo struck this eve, also one with "Booker." Robert got his first Valentines today.
Thurs., Feb. 15.
All kinds of weather today. Some rain this a.m. This has been our dullest day in Whittier, $33. We got in a good day of rolling laces. Lem left this eve for home. He will be gone about one month.
Fri., Feb. 16.
Today has been a very pretty day. Trade was quiet all a.m., but this eve we were quite busy, $55. Emma helped us this eve. Mary and Mrs. J. down this eve and we played Flinch. We had some good games!
Sat., Feb. 17.
Partly cloudy, partly pretty. Though trade was not rushing we had a $101 day. Emma helped us this eve and tonight. Got home at 10:30 p.m. Lyt was down today and I sent little Emery a box of candy.
Sun., Feb. 18.
Up at 7 a.m. We all attended Sunday School, then I went to hear the "Free Methodist" this a.m. Mary and Lewis were at Los Angeles all day. Papa took dinner and supper with us. We all took a nice long walk this eve. We attended the Persian Lecture tonight at the Congregational Church.
Mon., Feb. 19.
Real foggy early this a.m., then it turned out to be a lovely day. Trade fair all day, but not rushing, $69. Papa commenced putting in a false-bottom in one of our show windows today. Emma was out calling all afternoon. Robert at Store.
Tue., Feb. 20.
Lovely day, but very, very dull as to trade, $41. Mr. Pierce and I cut a big lot of boards again at the News Office. Then we drove down to the packing house and got 110 oranges for 20-cents. I sent a basket over to Mrs. Wing. Papa finished the floor in our shoe window today. Emma and I made two of my shields for my window tonight. Mary got a letter from Lem today, on the road. Emma took Robert to see Dr. Marshburn today.
Wed., Feb. 21.
Today has been a real pretty day. Trade, though, not very rushing. I got my four window shields done and put up in the front window, for my shoe display (with Emma's help). I worked until 10 p.m. Mary and Lewis went to Long Beach today, to stay until tomorrow eve. Papa is with us.
Thurs., Feb. 22.
"Washington's Birthday." We closed at noon for the balance of the day. We got in 200 pair of men's and boy's pants, also Kelly's Shoes. Emma helped me all eve and again tonight. Mr. Pierce was in Los Angeles all eve. Miss Wing and Miss Gallion were away today. I made a pretty "tan Oxford window" tonight. Home at 10 p.m., with a sick headache.
Fri., Feb. 23.
Lovely day. Trade quiet. I made a curtain for the outside of the show window this a.m. Emma, Robert and I went up to Los Angeles this eve, at 2 p.m. Got home at 6. I got Robert a little printing frame and some paper this eve. I varnished our upright on our outside case tonight. Emma made off the sales for me tonight.
Sat., Feb. 24.
This was gloomy for quite awhile. Trade was exceedingly quiet all day. Today was only $79, the dullest day for a Saturday, also for the week since we have been in Whittier. We got Robert's pictures tonight that we had taken with "Booker" (his dog) on the 14th. They are fine.
Sun., Feb. 25.
Papa was down awhile after we had breakfast. We all went to Sunday School. Our new post office in the "Berry Block" opened this a.m. I wrote a letter to Retta this a.m. Emma went up to the M. E. Church to practice for the "Big Meeting" that commences tonight. Robert and went to the Store and put up a lot of his photos to mail. We then met Emma at the park and walked down to Mary's. Went to Church tonight. In bed at 10 p.m.
Mon., Feb. 26.
Lovely day. Trade very nice, $50. I commenced cleaning the Store for new goods today. Papa commenced work on my dry goods window today, putting in a false bottom for us. Emma was up to Mary's all eve, playing Flinch with J. D. Fristoe and Mrs. Johnson. We all went to Church tonight.
Tue., Feb. 27.
Today has been quite a quiet day. Papa finished our dry goods side window today, at noon, and I made a "corset display" this eve and tonight. I didn't go to Church but worked on the window until 10 p.m. Little Robert was up with me tonight. Mrs. Randall died this afternoon.
Wed., Feb. 28.
Today has been pretty, but very windy and cool. Trade very quiet. I got quite a good deal of work done on cleaning the Store today. We got in our new "silk case" today. We attended Meeting tonight. I got a nice letter from Newt today. Emma got a letter from Miss Lou, at St. Louis, this a.m.

MARCH

Thurs., Mar. 1.
Today has been a very nice day all day. Trade nice, $80. Mrs. Randall was buried this eve. We all went to preaching tonight. Lem came home, to our surprise, tonight. He was just gone two weeks to the day.
Fri., Mar. 2.
Today lovely, but cool. Trade fair. Papa put in a shelf in front, for the lace and hamburg case. We all attended Church tonight. Emma received a letter from Mrs. M. L. Burns today.
Sat., Mar. 3.
Today was clear and pretty in the a.m., but the afternoon was gloomy and it rained some. Trade only fair. Lem got his trunk this eve, from the east. So tonight we made a pretty window of belt buckles and belts, neck chains and pins, side and back combs, and so on. Home at 11 p.m. and it was pouring down rain.
Sun., Mar. 4.
Very pretty day. We all went to Sunday School. Emma and I met J. D. Fristoe at the Store and he went with us. We also stayed for Church. J. D. and Papa took dinner with us. We went to the Sunday School mass-meeting at the M. E. Church this eve. Big crowd! We took a little walk and went by Lem's. Then on home. We attended Church again tonight.
Mon., Mar. 5.
Lovely day. Trade nice all day. Miss Wing stopped working for us on Saturday night. We got nice letters from Kate, Retta, and Ella Greenabaum today. We did not attend Church tonight. We stayed at home and amused Robert tonight.
Tue., Mar. 6.
Today was real pretty. Trade fine all day, $85. I got quite a good deal done on cleaning house today, too. We moved our center counters tonight and took down our double deck counter and made it all clear in the Store, clean through. It looks so much better than it did, we think!
Wed., Mar. 7.
Lovely day. Awful hot. Lem was in Los Angeles all day. Mary, Lewis, J. D., Emma and Robert were at the beach all day. I gave Papa his dinner at the "Cafe" today. I got oysters tonight for self. I put up a big "Myers Bros." name on the side of the Store wall today. Home at 8:30 p.m.
Thurs., Mar. 8.
Today has sure been one warm, warm day. Trade very nice all day, $61. Mary, J. D. F., and Lem went up to Lyt's tonight, for supper. Emma helped us this eve. I got Robert a pair of "Hot Walk Sandels" tonight. I bought Emma a carpet and rug beater today. I worked at the Store tonight until 10 p.m.
Fri., Mar. 9.
Today sure has been a very warm day. Trade nice. Miss Gallion at home, sick. I worked tonight and finished my house cleaning. We got in a lot of new goods today. I made a "cap showcase" display tonight.
Sat., Mar. 10.
A real pretty day. Trade quiet all a.m., but this eve we had all we could do, $142. Home tonight at 10:30 p.m. Little George Jack [Retta's son] is very, very sick, so Floy wrote us. Mr. J. P. Armstrong's closed his door for good tonight.
Friends Church, Whittier, CA, c. 1900 Sun., Mar. 11.
Up at 6:30 a.m. Gloomy and rainy all day. I went up to the Store and got the mail. Emma attended Sunday School and Church. Robert and I were at home. I wrote letters to Floy [Myers] and Retta. Emma went to the Friends Church this afternoon, although it rained. It was so rainy tonight that we all remained at home. It is just coming down!

I have a note that says this is the "second" Friend's Meeting House built on the northeast corner of Washington Ave. and Philadelphia Street (c. 1910,) so it might not be the one that Emma and Wib attended when they first arrived in Whittier.MLD

Mon., Mar. 12.
It rained all last night. Also all day long today. Trade only fair. Miss Gallion and I finished the hamburgs today for the case. Then we commenced winding the box lace. Mr. Pierce and I commenced on the collar dept. this eve. I came home at 6 p.m. and remained for the night. Remember our "candy pull."
Tue., Mar. 13.
Today has been a real pretty day. Trade very nice most all day. We finished the collar dept. and got very near done with the shirts. Lem was in Los Angeles all day. I attended Church with Emma tonight, to hear Dr. Bulgan. Robert stayed at Mrs. Wells. He had his hair cut this eve.
Wed., Mar. 14.
Rain most all day. Trade was nice, though. We got the shirts all finished. Attended Church tonight and remember having to carry "Booker" (Robert's dog) home from Church.
Thurs., Mar. 15.
Today was very pretty. Trade fair. We got in new goods today. I labeled the cap boxes today. A new "Dry Goods House" opened today, "Kingburg & Co." We attended Church again tonight.
Fri., Mar. 16.
Rained most all day. Trade was very, very nice, considering the day. We have the Store now in fine shape. I changed one window a little and the other one entirely. We did not attend Church tonight. Lem has been in the Dry Goods business for 25-years today.
Sat., Mar. 17.
We got in lots of new goods today. But trade was so good that we did not get any of it marked at all. We ran $183 today. Emma and Mary helped us this eve, also tonight. Today was a real pretty day. Home tonight from Store at 11 p.m.
Sun., Mar. 18.
Up at 7 a.m. We all attended Sunday School and Church. Papa was here for awhile after dinner. We attended Church this eve at 3 p.m. Then we took a little walk. Then we went to Mary's for awhile before coming home for lunch. We went to Church again tonight until 11 p.m. Emma gave $2 toward the Meeting today.
Mon., Mar. 19.
Today was lovely. We were busy all day marking goods. Emma got a nice long letter from Mary Haynie. Trade today was $71. I went back tonight and worked until 9 p.m., marking goods. Emma spent the afternoon calling on our neighbors. Emma and Robert home tonight.
Tue., Mar. 20.
Lovely, lovely day. Trade fine, $91. Lem was in Los Angeles most all day. Mary and J. D. F. were also in Los Angeles all day. We got in more goods today. Emma was up tonight and helped me mark goods. She and Robert attended exercises at the High School this eve.
Wed., Mar. 21.
Most of the day has looked like rain. Trade was quiet all a.m. Robert attended his first party this eve, down at Mrs. Bateman's, for Vivian Morehouse. Lem was at home all eve with a sick headache. I changed the soap and tie cases tonight. Emma and Robert were at the Store awhile tonight, but Robert got so sleepy they went home early. I got home at 9:30 p.m. It rained this eve, again.
Thurs., Mar. 22.
Lovely day. Trade fair, $47. We got in more goods from St. Louis today. I worked on them all day and up until tonight at 9:30 p.m. Emma, Mary and J. D. F. went to Los Angeles this afternoon, calling. Emma and Mary were at the Store tonight, helping us awhile.
Fri., Mar. 23.
Today has looked like rain all day......and tonight, we sure got it! Trade fair all day. We got all of our goods marked up and in fair shape for tomorrow. Little Robert attended a party at Guy Wells' tonight. Emma was up to the Store helping me tonight. J. D. Fristoe took dinner with us.
Sat., Mar. 24.
Rain.....rain.....rain! It has been the dullest Saturday we have had since we have been here. I made a shirt waist window display this a.m., in the south window. I also made a pretty sign for it. Mr. Triplett gave me two large wall paper books. Emma and Robert were at the Store tonight awhile, after it rained.
Sun., Mar. 25.
Up at 7:20 a.m. This is Emma's 30th birthday. Robert gave her his picture with "Booker"....enlarged, and I gave her a lingerie shirtwaist. We all attended Sunday School Emma stayed for Church. Robert and I came home. Papa ate dinner with us. Later in the eve we took a walk up to Lem and Mary's and they joined us for a little stroll. Remained at home tonight. Wrote to Ret.
Mon., Mar. 26.
Rained all last night and awhile this a.m. I hung rugs up on one side of the Store this a.m. And tonight I hung rugs up over the dry goods side. We have been real busy all day, $100.31. Emma helped me this eve and also tonight. Home at 9 p.m.
Tue., Mar. 27.
Lovely day. Trade very fair. Lem was at Los Angeles most all day. Emma helped us at the Store for awhile. Emma, Robert, Miss Gallion, and self went down to the High School tonight to hear and see "In His Steps," by Wilson. It was fine!
Wed., Mar. 28.
Today has been a real pretty day. Trade fair. We got the Store decorated some on the dry goods side, today and tonight together. Emma went to Prayer Meeting tonight. Robert and I at the Store. I got the lawn mower from Lem's home today, at noon. I got a letter from Uncle John [Whitmore] today.
Thurs., Mar. 29.
Today has been a lovely day. Trade fine all day. Though I did get some work done on fixing up the Store. I cleaned out the notion and jewelry window this eve and tonight and am ready for a shoe display for tomorrow. Emma cleaned the side of yard next to Mrs. Wells today, and I cleaned the front of that path this a.m.
Fri., Mar. 30.
Lovely day. Trade nice all day. I have been working on the shoe display and Emma and I worked until 11:10 p.m., but did not finish the window. Will finish in the a.m. (if nothing happens). Retired at 11:35 p.m. Tired and worn out.
Sat., Mar. 31.
Today is somewhat of a pretty day, but very, very windy. Though trade has been fine all day, $187. And some $20 sold on ticket. Home at 11 p.m. I finished my window display of shoes this a.m. It made a really pretty window. J. D. F. and Lewis had a ride on the ocean today.

APRIL

Sun., Apr. 1.
Windy and disagreeable all day long. We went to Sunday School and I remained for Church this a.m. Papa dined with us today. We took a nice long walk this afternoon. Miss Reese called for a little while late this afternoon. Emma, Robert and I attended Church at the M. E. Church tonight.
Mon., Apr. 2.
Pretty, but cold, all day. Trade very, very nice. I changed the cap case to a hat case this eve. We took in an "African Show" at the College tonight. I bought Emma a pretty tall vase today. I also gave her a pretty square and a doily for her table.
Tue., Apr. 3.
Today, while it has been real pretty, it has sure been cold. Trade nice all day, $90. They are laying our gutter in front of our place here today. Margaret and Harold were down tonight and played Flinch at Mary's. Emma was up and played with them. Robert turned Mary's fern over tonight and broke her pretty jardiniere that I gave her 9-years ago.
Wed., Apr. 4.
Today was real pretty. Lem at Los Angeles all day. Miss Gallion went home sick this a.m. Mary and Emma, also Will Andrews, came in and helped us all eve, as we had all we could handle. Mary, J. D., Pierce and I played Flinch at the Store tonight. Emma was at a lecture at her Church.
Thurs., Apr. 5.
Rain, cloudy and cool all day. J. D. Fristoe spent the day with us. Mary and Mr. Pierce, also J. D. F., played Flinch with Emma tonight. I worked at the Store until 10 p.m., on window. I printed a "Y. P. S. C. E. Junior Topic Card" today, for Miss Gallion. Emma got nice letters today from Cyrena and Miss Cresap.
Fri., Apr. 6.
It rained some this a.m. I got up and cleaned our chicken house and limed it good. Emma, Robert, Mary, J. D., and Lewis all went to Ocean Park today. Papa dined with me today, for dinner and for supper. We got in our white canvas goods today. I worked tonight until 10 p.m. at the Store.
Sat., Apr. 7.
Today has been, in part, a lovely day. Miss Gallion was home sick for one-quarter of the day. Trade nice, $189. Emma and Mary helped us all afternoon and night. Emma baked a nice cake for the Y. P. S. C. E. "Social" at Mrs. Kaiser's tonight, but she didn't go. Home tonight at 11 p.m. We got in part of our white slippers tonight.
Sun., Apr. 8.
Lovely a.m. We all went to Sunday School. Papa and I took a walk this a.m., up around on North Washington. Then he took dinner with us. We had ice cream and strawberries. Emma, Robert and I all took a car ride up to Los Angeles this eve. We took in the Easter Windows displays. Then on out to Lyt's for awhile. Home at 8:45 p.m.
Mon., Apr. 9.
Lovely a.m. Trade was fine all day, $105.95. Andrews was down this afternoon and helped us out. Emma was up and also helped us all eve. Home at 9 p.m. tonight. Emma got her a gray cotton veil dress tonight.
Tue., Apr. 10.
One year ago today we left Miami, Mo., for Whittier, Cal. This has been a lovely day. Trade nice, $95. I made a fancy sign for the window tonight. Emma and Mary helped us this eve as Lem and Miss Gallion went to Mrs. Doan's funeral.
Wed., Apr. 11.
Lovely day. I cleaned out Emma's flower bed in front this a.m.. Trade nice all day, $92. I made a pedestal today for my window. Mary, Emma, and Robert were out to Mrs. J.'s this afternoon. Robert has a bad cold. He and Emma were at home tonight. I came home at 9:30 p.m. I mailed Geo. Jack and Margaret Easter cards and chicks today.
Thurs., Apr. 12.
Today lovely. Robert was on the bed most of the day with a deep cold. Lem and Lewis drove to Los Angeles today. Trade nice all day. I tore up my window tonight, for a change on it tomorrow. Home tonight at 9 p.m. I sold 3-dozen eggs today, for 54-cents. Mary was down tonight. Papa ate dinner with us today.
Fri., Apr. 13.
One year ago today since we landed in Whittier, Cal. Today has been a lovely day, and very warm. I made a very pretty Easter window today. I put Lilies in it. I also cleaned my shoe window today. Got home tonight at 9 p.m. Robert was better. He and Emma were up and came home with me.
Sat., Apr. 14.
Foggy and cool most all day. Trade, though, has just been fine, $236. Emma, Mary and Lewis helped us all eve and also tonight. I have two real pretty Easter windows. We got home tonight at 11 p.m. Emma and Robert, each, made another deposit in bank today. Emma has $40 there now and Robert has $17.50.
The Long Beach Pavilion and Wharf, early 1900's Sun., Apr. 15.
"EASTER" Lovely day. Up at 6:15 a.m. Helped Robert find Easter eggs. He found 17. Mary, Lem, Lewis, Emma, Robert and I all went to Long Beach today and spent today. Had a nice time. Went to hear "Thornton" preach this a.m. Spent the balance of the afternoon down on the beach. Papa went up and spent the balance of eve with Lyt. We all came home together at 7:15 p.m.
Mon., Apr. 16.
Today has been a lovely day. Trade nice, $110. Mr. Thornton, his wife and daughter came down and spent the day with Mary. Papa dined with us today. Emma got a nice letter from "Nee" today. Mrs. Mound and Lillie are both sick. Home tonight at 9 p.m.
Tue., Apr. 17.
Today has been a real pretty day. Trade, $90.....about all we could handle. I changed the dry goods window again today. I got a nice long letter from Retta today. I got 133 oranges today for 20-cents, from the packing house.
Wed., Apr. 18.
San Francisco had a Great Earthquake this a.m., at 5:15. Worst in the history of the U. S....Horrible! Trade today, here, was very nice. Emma and Mary spent today in Los Angeles. Robert stayed over at Mrs. Reid's. I have an awful headache tonight, so I came home early.
Thurs., Apr. 19.
Today was sure warm all day. Real down hot! I was up and cut weeds down on the side flower bed this a.m. They ran the roller over our street today. Awful news comes today from all parts. Whittier had a slight earthquake today at noon (12:30 p.m.). Though I did not feel it.
Fri., Apr. 20.
Up at 6 a.m. and cut the grass on the Mound's side of yard. Today has been just sickening hot! We commenced using ice this eve. Trade today fine, over $100. Tonight, after we closed, we went down to the new ice cream parlor and had cream and candy. It was fine. Home at 9:30 p.m., tired and worn out.
Sat., Apr. 21.
Up at 6 a.m. and finished the yard and cut weeds around Robert's Store. Today was sure warm. Trade fine, $246. It was our biggest Saturday and week yet in Whittier. Over $700 for the week. Andrews was down all eve and helped us. Emma and Mary helped us this eve. Home at 10:30 p.m. Papa made, and gave, Emma a jardiniere today to match the pedestal he made before for her.
Sun., Apr. 22.
Lovely and cooler. Up at 7 a.m. Emma attended Sunday School. Robert and I at home. I wrote a long letter to Retta. Mr. Billy Brown and Mrs. McD. at Mary's today. Papa was down for awhile. Emma and I took a long walk...lovely out. I watered everything good this eve. We attended Church and heard Rev. Carroll preach on "Frisco's great earthquake." The sermon was at the M. E. Church. We got our big lot of clothing tonight.
Mon., Apr. 23.
Up at 6:30 a.m. I cut quite a lot of weeds. Cool and cloudy. A good rain fell at noon. W. L Andrews commenced work for us today. Another car load of goods left today for San Francisco. We sent a dozen loaves of bread. They worked all day yesterday placing tents and so on. I got home tonight at 9:20 p.m. Will Andrews took dinner with us today.
Tue., Apr. 24.
It rained some little last night. Up at 6:30 this morning. Trade fine all day long, $138. We were busy even tonight. Emma was out calling this eve. They finished graveling our street here, on Bright, today.
Wed., Apr. 25.
Up at 5:45 a.m. I cut a big lot of weeds in the back lot this a.m. Today was somewhat cool and gloomy. Trade was very still, $68. I worked on stock a good deal today. I worked on ginghams and clothing tonight. I gave Emma a white hat, slippers, and a parasol tonight. She attended her Prayer Meeting.
Thurs., Apr. 26.
Up at 6:15 this a.m. Done my regular work and finished up cutting my weeds in the back lot. Today was lovely. Trade fair, $96. I changed my dry goods window tonight. Emma down to Mrs. Underwood's this eve and helped sew carpet. She attended a lecture at the Friends Church tonight. I got home at 9:30 p.m.
Fri., Apr. 27.
Gloomy and cool. Rain most all day. Trade a little quiet. Lem up to Los Angeles all morning. Sold $76 today. Andrews worked our summer underwear up on the balcony today. I worked dress goods off of front counter and onto shelving today. I got a nice letter from Mrs. Scott today. Emma answered it this eve for me. Emma, Mary and I went down to the High School tonight to hear "Bardette." He is not as good as "Hauk."

Clear, but real cool. Trade very nice all day long, $175. It rained some again, late this eve. Emma and Mary helped us out all afternoon and night. Home at 10 p.m. tonight. Real cold.

Lovely day. Cool. Trade nice all day, $107. That made $2,750 for April. Mary was in Los Angeles all eve. Papa dined with us tonight. Papa sharpened Emma's scissors and butcher knife. Emma and Robert took Mrs. Simons and daughter out riding this eve. I mailed Wib Burns and his wife a letter today.

MAY

Tue., May 1.
I mailed a little package to W. E. Burns and wife today. Today lovely. Lem was in Los Angeles all day. Papa dined with us. Mary is not well today. Trade very nice. Emma made Robert eight May Baskets and went with him tonight to give them. I gave Papa shoes, shirts, collars, ties and hdkfs, and so on today.
Wed., May 2.
Robert got two May Baskets last night and one bouquet. Today was real pretty. Trade only fair. I finished cleaning the Hat Dept. today. Labeled a few boxes. Straightened out showcases. Emma and I footed up the amounts of our outstanding tickets tonight, for April 1906.
Thurs., May 3.
A very pretty day after the heavy fog went away. Emma, Robert and I spent today at Los Angeles and Long Beach. Had a good salt bath and enjoyed the day fine. Got home at 8 p.m. They had a good day at the Store today, about $100.
Fri., May 4.
Lovely. Miss Gallion at Los Angeles this a.m. Trade nice all day, $86. Andrews and I made a pretty shoe window today. Emma helped me out on it tonight. Home at 10:30 p.m. Emma got a nice letter from Miss Lou tonight.
Sat., May 5.
Real pretty. Made a quick display of 10-cent madras in one window this a.m. Trade very nice all day, $179, and $670 for the week. Emma helped us out this eve and tonight. Tomorrow Robert will be 6-years old. We got a "stick horse," a sand play outfit, a box of candy and some brick ice cream for him. He got a white kitten today.
Sun., May 6.
Robert is 6 years old today. He named his white kitty, "Snowball." We all attended Sunday School. I wrote a letter G. T. Taylor after Sunday School. Papa dined with us today. Emma, Robert and I took a long drive in Lem and Mary's outfit this eve, for our first time. Lovely eve. Papa ate supper with us. We attended the Baptist Church tonight and heard the Salvation Army.
Mon., May 7.
Lovely day. Lem was in Los Angeles all day. Trade fair, $90. Emma got a letter from Syd, Lizzie, and Ruth today. Robert got one from Lottie Greenabaum. We gave Mary a "jardiniere" this eve, that Robert broke of hers that I gave her 10-years ago.
Tue., May 8.
Another real pretty day. Trade very, very nice all day, $99. Lem was out part of the day. Emma and I looked at the Reece house today, also the Holbrook place. We like it very, very much. I made Myers Bros. Store signs and three other pretty ones also.
Wed., May 9.
Lovely day. Trade quiet. I made a real pretty shirt waist and skirt window today. Emma was out for awhile this a.m., working for "Founders Day" on Friday. Home at 9 p.m. Emma, Robert and I over at Mrs. Mound's for awhile tonight.
Thurs., May 10.
Heavy, heavy fog all a.m. Mrs. Kelly and Mrs. Sidenstricker were down from Los Angeles today and spent today with us. Trade fair, $86. I printed two signs tonight for Founders Day....."Ice Cream, 10-cents," and "Dinner, 25-cents." I made a glove display in the upright case tonight.
Fri., May 11.
Founders Day for Whittier. It certainly has been a day! Foggy, sun out awhile, rain and cold. All kinds of a day. We all took dinner at the Founders Picnic Dinner. Papa ate with us, though it rained most of the eve. We had a "Gingham Sale" and sold 719 yards @ 5-cents a yard (regularly 10 to 12-cents a yard) from 2 to 6 p.m. Remember us all getting wet coming home this eve. I sold Robert's shoes for $1.00 this eve.
Sat., May 12.
Today has been a lovely day. Trade quiet all a.m., but nice this afternoon and real busy tonight. We sold $193. I gave Emma a nice white skirt today, cream mohair. Home tonight at 11 p.m.
Sun., May 13.
Today has been one lovely day. Up at 7 a.m. We all attended Sunday School and Emma and I remained for Church. Papa took dinner and supper with us today. Mary, Lem and Lewis drove to Pasadena today. Arthur Greenabaum was down from Los Angeles this eve and we had a long talk and walk. He returned on the 5:55 o'clock. We all attended the Baptist Church tonight and heard the blind man and his wife sing.

Today has been a lovely, lovely day. Trade fine all day....had all we could handle all afternoon and tonight. I sold my largest bill so far, to Mrs. Connors ("slate school") tonight, $24.24. Our sales for today were $133. Home at 10 p.m.
Tue., May 15.
Lovely day. Cool this a.m. for awhile. Trade quiet all a.m. Lem went up to Los Angeles this eve. We had a nice trade all afternoon, $150 day. We got in some new goods from St. Louis this afternoon. Home at 9:30 p.m.
Wed., May 16.
Another real pretty nice day. Trade fine all day, $140. Have sold $425 this week so far and 3 days yet to go. I made a shirt and underwear, and tie window today, on the dry goods side. Commenced fixing a trunk of Emma's, to send back by Papa to Retta and Dr. Wheeler.
Thurs., May 17.
Another lovely day. Trade not quite as good as yesterday. I fixed a trunk today, for fruit, to send back to Missouri, by Papa. Papa took dinner with us today. I gave him a dollar box of cigars today and $1.00 worth of stamps.....also some paper and envelopes. Emma, Robert and I walked up to Mary's tonight and took Papa our dress case.
Fri., May 18.
Gloomy part of the morning, but a real pretty afternoon. I came home at 11 a.m. and lined the trunk out for oranges. Mr. Randall brought us 155 fine oranges this a.m., for $3. Emma and Robert went up to Los Angeles this afternoon. Papa was not very well this afternoon. I got home at 9 p.m. We got nice letters from Taylor Casebolt and Willie Cresap this eve.
Sat., May 19.
today was real pretty and pleasant. I got up and cleaned out Emma's flowers in front. There was a big fog this a.m., almost like a shower. I got some nuts and raisins and figs for our trunk this a.m. Trade was quiet all morning, but nice thhis afternoon and night, $194, and $801 for the week. Papa not so well this eve. Mary got him some medicine from the doctor.
Sun., May 20.
Lovely a.m. Up at 6:15 a.m. I washed out the chicken house and its nests this morning. Emma, Robert, and I attended our Sunday School. Emma remained for Church, but Robert and I went up to see Papa for awhile, who had been complaining for the last few days. We got a graduating card from Alice this a.m. We took a long walk on South Painter this afternoon, then up to Mary's, to see Papa. We went to the Baptist Church, to meeting tonight. Lewis Myers was baptized tonight, at 9:08 p.m., at the Baptist Church.
Mon., May 21.
Foggy for awhile this a.m. Sun out for awhile and then cloudy until late in eve. Trade very, very nice all day. Mr. Andrews has quit working for us, for this week anyway. Emma and I, also Miss Gallion, went up to Los Angeles this eve, to see the Festival.....big flower show. It was grand! Home at 11 p.m. Robert stayed at Mrs. Gallion's. I rented the Holbrook property this eve, at 235 North Bright.
Tue., May 22.
Big flower parade in Los Angeles. Mr. Pierce was at Los Angeles all day. Emma and Mary, also Lewis, spent the day there also. Trade nice all day, $90. Papa dined with me and Robert today. He also took supper with us tonight. Emma got home at 5:45 tonight. Emma, Robert and I just finished packing our trunk of fruit for the Missouri people.
Wed., May 23.
Today has been lovely. Got Papa's trunk off early this a.m. Papa spent today with Lyt and family. Trade very, very nice all day, $81. Little Robert gave Grandpa Myers $5.00 and a pocket book for his trip to Missouri, which he leaves on in the morning. Home at 9:30 p.m.
Thurs., May 24.
Lem took Papa up to Los Angeles early this a.m., to take the 7:30 a.m. Santa Fe train for Kansas City. Today was cloudy all day. Trade quiet, only $50. Edgar Calhoun and wife were down today and spent today with Mary. Emma used Mary's horse and trap this eve, to go down in the country. I made a fancy sign tonight. We put our first coat of oil on the men's side of the floor tonight.
Fri., May 25.
Cloudy and foggy all day. Trade very, very quiet. I changed things on the shoe side display wire today and cleaned out the straw hat side. Also filled in my line. Emma and Mary were up to Los Angeles this eve. I cleaned out my chicken pen this a.m. Home tonight for supper at 7 p.m. It rained so I remained at home for the eve.
Sat., May 26.
Today certainly has been a gloomy, gloomy day. It rained most all last night and a good portion of this a.m. Trade very, very quiet. We only ran $142 today, $540 for the week. Home tonight at 10 p.m. We got nice letters from Floy Myers and W. E. Burns today.
Sun., May 27.
Gloomy this a.m. Raining again. We did not attend Sunday School or Church this a.m. I helped Emma clean up some around the house.
Mon., May 28.
Today very, very pretty. Trade was nice, $100. Though we were not at all rushed. We got in lots of new goods today. I got home at 9 p.m. Emma helped me write up my sales book tonight. Robert had a little sick spell today for a little while after dinner, but seems all okay tonight.
Tue., May 29.
This has been a lovely day. Trade nice all day, $105. Got in some more new goods today. We oiled our floor tonight, for the first time. I got home at 10:30 p.m. Emma and Mary have been fixing lunch all day for our little trip to the mountains with Lyt and Sunnie tomorrow, if nothing happens.
Wed., May 30.
"Memorial Day" Closed all day today. We got up at 5:30 a.m. I helped with the work and then Lem, Mary, Lewis, Emma, Robert, and I, all left for Los Angeles on the 7:55 a.m. car, to meet Lyt, Sunnie, Harold, and Margaret, and then we took the Sierra Madre car to Sierra Madre, to go on the Mt. Wilson trail. Had a fine time and a big dinner on the rocks by the mountain stream. Home, safe and sound, by 7 p.m., tired and worn out from our miles of walking up and down the mountain.
Thurs., May 31.
Lovely today. Grand! Trade was very, very nice all day, $107. Lem was up to Los Angeles all afternoon. We got in 3,042 McCall's patterns this a.m. Emma, Miss Gallion, and I worked tonight until 10:30 p.m. on them. Little Robert stamped lots of fashion sheets for us this eve. Emma helped us all eve at the Store.

JUNE

Fri., Jun. 1.
Gloomy most all day. Trade nice all day, though not rushing. Miss Gallion and I worked on the patterns all morning. I came home at noon with a sick headache and remained until 3:30 p.m. I had a long nap, but no dinner. Emma went up and helped Miss Gallion finish up the patterns. I went up to the Store at 3:45 p.m. I got a nice letter from Papa and Retta today. Mary gave Emma some nice gooseberries today.
Sat., Jun. 2.
Another very cool and gloomy day. Trade only fair, $174. We got in a big lot of corsets today, and also our new line of "Cossetti's" men's fine shoes. Emma helped us all afternoon and also tonight. I sold 18-pair of shoes today myself. All of us sold ( )pair all together. This weather is certainly very, very quiet. I got home tonight at 11 p.m. We got our clock from Binford this a.m.
Sun., Jun. 3.
35-years old today. Today has been a very pretty day, though some parts of it were a little cloudy. We all attended Sunday School and Emma attended Church. I came home and wrote a letter to Papa and Retta. Emma gave me a nice "Webster Academic Dictionary" and Robert gave me a nice pair of pocket scissors. We took a little walk this eve, late. We attended divine worship tonight. Robert gave $1.00 to the missionary box this a.m.

Today has been a real pretty day and trade has been fine all day, $163. I got the lawn mower from Lem's today, at noon. Mary was at Los Angeles and Long Beach this eve. We got nice letters from Miss Lou and Retta today, about the fruit we sent to them. Mr. Pierce worked on the shoes on the gallery today. Then we cleaned up good and oiled the floor. I didn't get home tonight until 10 p.m.
Tue., Jun. 5.
I signed up our new contract last eve, for our new home on #235 No. Bright, for after July 1st. This was a very, very pretty day. Trade fair, $83. I changed my shirt window today to a silk display, 35-cent goods. Emma is making her a white dotted swiss skirt to match her waist. Up at 5:15 this a.m. and mowed the grass on both sides of the front yard. We had a good shower last night.
Wed., Jun. 6.
Today is Taylor Casebolt's wedding day. Lovely Day. Up at 5:30 a.m. and cut the grass and weeds on Well's side of yard. Trade nice all day, $100. Mary had Mrs. Reynolds and daughter, Sunnie and Emma, also Stella Vanice, for dinner. Lem was in Los Angeles all day. I made a pretty shoe sign today, "Not How Cheap, But How Good." "Shoes," with a big sheaf of wheat in center case.
Thurs., Jun. 7.
Today has been a real pretty day. Warm. Trade fine all day, $102. I talked over the phone to Sunnie tonight. Mr. Pierce and I worked on our shoe window tonight until 11:15 p.m. Emma and Robert attended a show at the High School tonight, Mr. Reid's show.
Fri., Jun. 8.
Today has sure been one real pretty warm day. We commenced ice again today. Trade fair all day, about $75. We got in a big lot of goods last eve and today. We attended a musical tonight at the College. Robert and I went down to the packing house this a.m., after oranges.
Sat., Jun. 9.
Today has sure been one warm, warm day. And trade has been just fine all day long. Tonight we couldn't handle all the trade. We sold $246 today, over $750 for the week. Emma bought a nice chicken from Mrs. Reid today. Home tonight from Store at 11:30 p.m. Tired! Tired!
Sun., Jun. 10.
Up at 7:15 a.m. Took a cold sponge bath. Emma and Robert went to Sunday School. Emma remained for Church. I stayed at home all a.m. and eve. I wrote letter to Cyrena, Miss Lou, and Retta. Emma wrote one to Mary Haynie. We went to the children's day exercises at the M. E. Church tonight. We tried to get in the Friends Church, but we couldn't. Too big a crowd! Lovely, lovely out tonight.
Mon., Jun. 11.
A grand morning this a.m. Emma and Robert spent today at Long Beach. Miss Gallion took sick at Store at 10:30 a.m. and went home. So Lem, Pierce, and I had all we could handle all day. We ran $165 today. I got a nice letter from Papa this eve. Home tonight at 9:30 p.m.

Lovely, lovely. Up at 6 a.m. Wrote a letter to Papa this a.m. Trade nice all morning. I made me a pair of sleeve protectors. Lem was in Los Angeles all afternoon. Mary and Emma helped us the the Store. Mrs. Wallace Gregg gave Emma such a pretty fern this a.m. Emma and Mary at the College tonight. We all got home at 10 p.m. Lovely out.

Another beautiful day. Trade fair, $87. I have been working in the shoe dept. all day. Got along nicely. Emma attended exercises at the College this a.m. She and Robert were at the Store tonight. Today has been lovely. Cool and fine. I finished our shoe and slippers depts. this eve. Trade nice all day, $108. We were quite busy tonight. Emma attended a "fancy work gathering" this afternoon at Mrs. Simmons. Emma pulled a little front tooth of Robert's last night, his second tooth so far that he has ever lost. Home at 10:30 p.m.

Another lovely, lovely day. Trade has just been fine all day long. Our largest Saturday sales yet, not including any special Sale Day. We sold $328, which is $927 for the week. Trade lasted up until 11 p.m. We got home at midnight. I gave Emma a dollar extra tonight for her labors today. Tired and worn out.
Sun., Jun. 17.
Lovely, grand! Just a beautiful morning! Emma and Robert at Sunday School and Emma attended Church. I stayed at home and wrote to Papa and Newt. It is sure warm now. We went to the M. E. Church this afternoon and heard fine singing and a sermon by Rev. Frank DeWitt Talmadge. Fine! We were at Mary's for awhile and talked with them and Mr. Landon. Then we took a little drive. At home tonight. We walked down later and ate some ice cream. Retired at 9 p.m.
Mon., Jun. 18.
Another lovely morning. But it has been very, very warm most of the day. Trade was fine, $141. About all we could handle. Lem was at Los Angeles all eve, so Mary and Emma helped us all afternoon. Robert got his first letter from his Grandpa Myers. Emma got a nice letter from "Nee" today. We all had ice cream tonight. Home at 10 p.m.
Tue., Jun. 19.
Another nice day and not quite as warm. Mr. Pierce and Lewis were out on the road this a.m., putting up signs. Trade real nice all day, $128.29. I took papers off of part of our lawns today. Emma wore her pretty new blue gingham dress today, first time. I mailed Taylor Casebolt a letter and spoon today. Mary went with Emma tonight, to a school entertainment. I worked at the Store until 10:30 p.m. Emma sold nine of her chickens this eve, $3.30.
Wed., Jun. 20.
I commenced taking down my chicken wire fence this morning. It was foggy and cool this a.m., but it got quite warm during the day. Trade fine again all day long, $133. Pierce and Lewis out all morning, signing. I didn't get home until 10 p.m. tonight. Emma gave Miss Esther Rainbolt a book tonight. Dressar moved into the "William's Delicy Stand" today.
Thurs., Jun. 21.
Mama died 21-years ago today, at noon. Up and finished taking down the wire on our chicken pen this a.m. Washed out all of our box nests. Emma and Mary attended a little "Miami Picnic" at East Lake Park today. Mr. Pierce was at home all afternoon, sick. Trade nice all day. We ran a little over $100 again today. Robert and I ate supper at the restaurant tonight. I had hose fixed today. Kemp mended our yard hose today. Home at 9:30 p.m.
Fri., Jun. 22.
Up at 6 a.m. Robert and I finished cleaning out our chicken pen and taking down our wire. Foggy most all a.m. Trade fair. I cleaned and washed the dry goods window this a.m. Got a nice letter from Isaac Myers (Papa) this morning. Trade nice all day, $111. Lem was in Los Angeles all afternoon. Mary and Lewis helped us all afternoon. Home at 11 p.m.
Sat., Jun. 23.
Pleasant all day. I took down Robert's "Store" this a.m. and cleaned up the back lot. Trade was quiet all a.m. and not at all rushing this afternoon. But tonight it was awful....on the go until 11:30 p.m. Then we couldn't handle all of it. We ran $272 for the day! We sold $162 after 6 o'clock. Emma got her a pretty white hat today.
Sun., Jun. 24.
Foggy. I got ice this a.m. I helped Emma at home, then Emma and Robert went to Sunday School and Church. I wrote to Papa, but did attend Church in the a.m. We spent the best part of the afternoon at home, then took a little walk and stopped at Mary's awhile. Then we came home, watered the flowers and lawn, and had lunch. And then we went to Church at the Friends Church. It is real cold tonight and has been all this afternoon.
Mon., Jun. 25.
This morning Pierce went to Los Angeles and bought his railroad ticket for home, to leave July 2nd. Trade very nice all day, $106. I cleaned and rearranged things upstairs today on the blanket side and we put in a big lot of grips today. Home at 10:45 p.m.
Tue., Jun. 26.
Another pretty day. Trade nice all day. We went $100 again today. I finished cleaning up the upstairs this a.m. and brought down all of our summer clothing. Emma and I moved our matting and carpets up to our new home this eve. I went up tonight and put down one carpet and matting. This is our last night to spend at this place. Retired at 11 p.m.

Lovely, lovely day. Up at 6 a.m. Went down to our old home this a.m. and fed our old setting hen. Then I got milk and meat. I was at Store at 8:30 a.m. Trade was nice all day, $93.89. Emma and Mary were at the high school tonight. I was at the Store until 10:30 p.m. Pierce and I ate our first watermelon tonight, 40-cents. Robert certainly enjoyed it.
Fri., Jun. 29.
Another lovely day. Trade fine all day, about $120. We commenced milk from Mrs. Kemp this a.m. Mr. Gallion commenced cleaning our yard today. We got two pair of new lace curtains today and two nice new rugs. I put shelves up tonight in the bathroom (two). I had my first tomato tonight, for supper. Lem fixed our linoleum this a.m.
Saturday, Jun. 30.
Lovely day. Not so very warm. Trade slow most all day, but rushing again tonight. We ran $194 for the day. Home at 11:30 p.m. We got in a big lot of our winter underwear this eve. I got Emma a new "Rest Easy" chair this eve, for our front porch.

JULY

Sun., Jul. 1.
Cyrena got married tonight [in Miami,MO...to Walker Bure]. Lovely morning. I went uptown and got a new duster and rug for the bedroom. I was so tired and my feet so sore that I did not attend Sunday School or Church this a.m. We all spent the day at home. Mr. Pierce brought me up my new chair this a.m. Robert and I went down to our old home and brought up six little chicks. We all took a little walk this eve. I swept out the Store this eve. We had ice cream and then came home.
Mon., Jul. 2.
Another lovely day. Trade fine, $164. We were just as busy as busy could be all day long. And only three of us, too. Mary helped awhile this eve and Emma tonight. Mr. Gallion finished our yard this afternoon. It looks fine. Emma attended a reception at Mrs. Woodruff's this afternoon, from 2 to 5. I got home tonight at 10:30 p.m., tired and worn out. Emma and Robert brought her old hen home. She has eight little chicks.
Tue., Jul. 3.
Lovely day.....and sure one busy, busy one! We ran $196, and had all we could handle....morning, afternoon and eve. I got home tonight at 11:15 p.m. Emma got a letter from Cyrena today, saying she was to be married July 1st (Sunday last).
Wed., Jul. 4.
Closed all day. I got up at 6:30 a.m. and watered the flowers for Emma, then I helped Emma with her work. I went uptown and bought some fireworks for Lewis and Robert tonight. I fixed oil cloth in the bathroom and put up a "clock shelf." Robert and Lewis have had a fine time all day. Mary was here this afternoon, also Lewis and Lem. I swept the Store and the upstairs this afternoon. Then I decorated the porch at home, for Robert. We all had a fine time tonight with our fireworks, on "Reservoir Hill." Home at 9:30 p.m.
Thurs., Jul. 5.
Another pretty, pretty day. Trade nice all day, $78. Lem was in Los Angeles all afternoon. I took Miss Gallion's photo today after dinner, in the ladies shoe dept. I put a spring on our front door tonight. Emma got us a soap pan for the bathtub this eve. Mary and Lewis helped us all afternoon. Mrs. Trueblood came over to see us tonight.
Fri., Jul. 6.
Another lovely, lovely day.....and real warm. I took Miss Gallion's photo yesterday in the shoe dept. and got a fair photo of her. Trade nice all day. I worked at the Store tonight until 11:15 p.m. I put away a lot of new goods. Swept Store out and cleaned up in general. I made a bath towel window this eve. Home at 11:30 p.m.

Lovely day. Trade was all we could handle. Busy all day long, $218.18. Home tonight at 11p.m. Mary and Emma attended Mrs. Reid's funeral and Emma and I went out to the graveyard to the burying at 4:30 p.m. Today has been a very, very warm day.

Up at 7:10 a.m. I helped Emma and we all went to Sunday School. Warm today....warmer yet! I wrote a letter to Papa and Retta together this afternoon. We spent the afternoon at home. I made a diagram of our home to send to Retta. We had fine ice cream and strawberries for supper. We attended the Baptist Church this eve.
Mon., Jul. 9.
Lovely, lovely! Another grand day. I went up to the Store at 5:30 a.m. I opened up and dusted. Also opened a lot of goods. Trade was fine all day, $126. I swept the Store tonight and got home at 10:15 p.m.
Tue., Jul. 10.
Another real pretty, warm day. Miss Gallion was at home all a.m., sick. We had a very nice day of trade, $90. Emma helped us out tonight. I got home at 10 p.m.
Wed., Jul. 11.
Lovely morning. Up at 6 a.m. I put on my bottom boards for our chicken pen. We all went up to Los Angeles this a.m., to buy a piano for Emma. Lem had me to get one just like ours for Mary, for a surprise. Emma and Robert went on to Santa Monica to spend the day. Mary and I had dinner and came home at 2 p.m. Trade was fine all day, another $93 day. We got ice cream tonight as we came home at 10 p.m.
Thurs., Jul. 12.
Heavy fog this a.m. Then it got very warm today. Trade nice all day, $93. Lem was in Los Angeles all morning. Emma got her piano today, at 2 o'clock. Remember how we had to trick Mary in order to surprise her with her piano. We did, though, fine! I drove down to see Miss Rainbolt this a.m. She commences work for us in the a.m.
Fri., Jul. 13.
Miss Esther Rainbolt commenced work for us this a.m. I washed all the windows and showcases this a.m. Trade was nice all day, $95. I made a grip and dress case window this afternoon. We got in new goods this eve. I swept out tonight and got home at 11 p.m. Took a bath and retired at 11:30 p.m.
Sat., Jul. 14.
Heavy fog this a.m. I got up at 5:30 a.m. and went to the Store at 6 a.m. We have had a nice trade all day long. We ran $215 today. I did not get home until 11:45 p.m. Emma helped us tonight. We got in a lot of spool cotton this a.m. Also a big bale of pillows and shoes and dry goods tonight. Feel pretty tired and worn out tonight.
Sun., Jul. 15.
Lovely morning. Up at 7 a.m. I went up after ice this a.m. Did not go to Sunday School. Robert and I took a walk up to the new reservoir this a.m. Remember Robert's new pants this a.m.! Remember Emma as to them and Sunday School! I swept out the Store today before dinner. Spent the afternoon at home (Robert and I). Emma was at Mr. Nicholson's funeral all afternoon. I wrote a letter to Papa today. Lyt, Lem and the children were here this eve awhile. We attended the Friend's Church tonight. We heard from Mr. Pierce today.
Mon., Jul. 16.
Up at 5:40 a.m. Swept the walks and went up to the Store by 6:10 a.m. Today was busy as busy could be, all day long. We handled 179 people today and sold $156. Today has been lovely. I got a chicken post and hammock post today, also some lumber for Robert's sand box. I made it today at noon, and tonight at supper, together. Home at 10 p.m. We had letters from Retta and Kate today.
Tue., Jul. 17.
Lovely day. Trade nice all day again, $110.29. I did not get home until 10:30 p.m. Miss Rainbolt and I started on soap case cleaning, but got busy with trade so did not get to finish. Emma was out calling this afternoon. Robert spent the day with me at the Store.
Wed., Jul. 18.
Foggy most all a.m. Trade quiet this morning and fair this afternoon and eve. I washed the ribbon case inside and out. Also finished the soap case. We commenced invoicing patterns tonight. All five of us worked on it until 10 p.m. Home at 10:30 p.m. Went to "Lamors" (or "Lamar's") tonight for ice cream.
Thurs., Jul. 19.
Fog again this a.m. Miss Gallion and I checked on patterns all a.m. She and Emma finished them this afternoon. Mary was at Long Beach today. Lem was at Los Angeles all afternoon. Trade fine this afternoon and eve, $89.02. I swept out and got home by 11:45 p.m. They are moving "Hurst's" Ice Cream Parlor today.
Fri., Jul. 20.
Up at 6 a.m. I worked on our chicken pen. Mr. Gallion ran my wire for me on my chicken pen today. I washed our front windows and showcases this a.m. Miss Gallion was at home, sick all day today. Trade fine, $125. Emma fixed our patterns tonight for us.
Sat., Jul. 21.
Nice and cool this a.m. I got up at 5:20 a.m., and finished up my chicken pen. I have it in good shape now. Trade was nice all day and real busy tonight. Emma and Mary helped us out awhile tonight. Emma and Robert went home at 9:15 p.m. I swept out and got home at 12:20 a.m. Today has been lovely. No! I'm not at all tired.
Sun., Jul. 22.
Up at 7:30 a.m. Took a fine bath and helped Emma with her work. We got ready and Emma fixed us up a nice lunch and we went up to Los Angeles and out to East Lake park and spent the day. Had a fine time. Then we went out to Lyt's and stayed until Church time and he went with us for preaching. Home at 11 p.m. Lovely all day. Big crowd at Park.
Mon., Jul. 23.
Up at 6:45 a.m. Another fine morning. Today has been very, very warm. Trade very nice all day, $107. We got home at 9:30 p.m. I have not felt very well today. Went to see Dr. Marshburn at noon, about my back.
Tue., Jul. 24.
Lovely day. Very, very warm. Have not felt very well today. Trade fair, $87. Robert went with his Aunt "Mame" [Mary] today to a picnic down on the river-bed. Jess Reynolds spent today with us. I swept out and got home at 10 p.m. Binford's Jewelry Store was robbed last night. I got a letter from Papa today.

Lovely morning, then hot and close all day. Trade fair most all day, $76. Master Oliver Bell commenced work for us this a.m. We got in lots of new goods this eve. I got me two new shirts today. I got Robert a nice watermelon today. Miss Gallion was down a little while this a.m. She looks real bad.

Rain, thunder and lightning last night. Today, though, has been lovely. And trade nice all day, $78. We got in lots of goods today from St. Louis. Home tonight at 10:20 p.m. My feet are so sore I can hardly walk.
Fri., Jul. 27.
Heavy fog this a.m. Trade very fair all day, $84. We worked away all the new goods today. Oliver washed the windows and cases today and swept out tonight for me. Emma put up a crate of berries today. She and Mrs. Johnson went out after them this a.m. I got home tonight at 9:30 p.m., first time this early for weeks.

Very, very pretty day. Not quite so warm. Trade fair all day, $171. Not such a big rush, though we had about all we could handle. Emma got a nice long letter from Mary Haynie today.
Sun., Jul. 29.
Up at 7 a.m. Helped Emma. We all attended Sunday School and I went to the Baptist Church this a.m. I wrote letters to Pierce, Papa, and Retta, and the Santa Fe Electric R. R., Long Beach. I spent the afternoon at home. Lovely day....warm. I had a fine nap this afternoon. We spent the eve at the Christian Church, to Song Service. It was real good. Dr. Hall joined us for ice cream tonight.
Mon., Jul. 30.
Today has been indeed a very pleasant day. Trade fair all day, $92. Miss Gallion went to work again this a.m. Oliver Bell took this week off for his vacation. Mary had the "Blind Singers" at her house tonight. Swept out and at home at 11 p.m.
Tue., Jul. 31.
Heavy fog early, but the balance of the day was real pretty. I commenced changing the shoe window today. Trade nice all day. Emma and Mary went up to Los Angeles this afternoon. They both got some new music. Mary went on to Long Beach to spend the night. Robert was at Store with me this afternoon.

Wed., Aug. 1.
Today has been a lovely day. Trade nice all day, $82. Lewis made me a big lot of price tickets today, for my shoe window. Lem was at Los Angeles all afternoon. I got Robert a nice watermelon this a.m. Home at 10:20 p.m. Lewis took supper with us this eve.
Thurs., Aug. 2.
Lovely, cool a.m. I wrote to Papa this a.m. and sent him a check. Trade fine all day, $114. I made a pretty shoe window today. Got the balance of my lumber for the top on Robert's sand box. Emma got 1/2 dozen nice chickens from Mrs. Rainbolt this eve. I oiled part of the Store floor tonight.
Fri., Aug. 3.
I worked on Robert's sandbox cover this a.m. Also finished the frame of it at noon. Trade fine all day, $118. I made a trunk-grip-shirt-hat-cap-and hose display today in the other window. Home at 10:30 p.m. We all had chocolate cream tonight at Lamar & H.
Sat., Aug. 4.
I cleaned out our chicken pen and limed it this a.m. today was lovely and trade was nice all day, $199. I swept out the Store tonight and got home at 11:30 p.m. Emma got a nice letter from Retta today, at noon. Miss Gallion goes out tonight for a three week vacation.
Sun., Aug. 5.
Up at 7:20 a.m. Helped Emma. We all went to Sunday School. Emma stayed at Church and I went to the Store, where I wrote a letter to Retta. Lem and Mary went to Hollywood this afternoon. We spent the afternoon at home. Miss Thornsbury and sister, Mrs. McMahan, came in and sat awhile. At 5:30 p.m. we went up and got Lem and Mary's buggy and took a little drive. We got ice cream, then came home for the night.
Mon., Aug. 6.
Lovely day all day. The Masonic Lodge laid the corner stone to their fine new Temple today, at 1:30 p.m. Big crowd. We commenced on getting out remnants today for a little sale. Trade nice all day, $92.
Tue., Aug. 7.
Another pretty day. Trade was $90 again. Lem was at Los Angeles all eve. I have not been very well today. Mr. Landreth said tonight that he would do our Store change for us at once.....for a 3-year lease at $65 mo. rent.
Wed., Aug. 8.
Commenced putting the top on Robert's sandbox. Today was a real pretty day. Trade fine all day, $127. Miss Gallion spent today with us. Emma and her went out driving all eve. Home at 9:15 p.m. tonight. Emma bought a box of fine peaches today.
Thurs., Aug. 9.
Emma got up at 5 a.m. and I got up at 6 a.m. And we put up a crate of nice peaches this early morning. Today was nice, but trade only fair. Emma and Mary spent today at Los Angeles, at Mrs. Reynolds. Robert spent the morning at the Store and the p.m. up with Lewis. I didn't come to supper. Home at 9:30 p.m.

Another lovely day. Up at 6 a.m. I finished Robert's sandbox cover this a.m., and at noon. Lem was in Los Angeles all day. Trade real nice all day, $85. I got a nice letter from Papa today. Home at 9 p.m. tonight.

Today has been a real pretty day, but trade has been somewhat quiet. Though we will make over $600 for the week. They took down our barn, back of the Store, this a.m., getting ready to build on the back of the Store for us. Trade tonight was fine. I got home at 11:15 p.m. We got a letter from Papa.
Sun., Aug. 12.
Up at 6:45 a.m. Lovely out. Robert and I went up for ice. Emma, Robert and I took the 9:10 a.m. cars for Long Beach ($2.90). There is a State Convention Meeting there. Remember our run this a.m. for keys! We had a nice day. Supper in Los Angeles. Home at 8 p.m. Today was lovely, but warm. I wrote a letter to Papa at Long Beach this eve.
Mon., Aug. 13.
Lovely and sure warm. Today has been just as warm as I have felt yet in Whittier. Trade $75 today. Mr. W. L. Andrews came down and commenced work for us today for awhile. They dug out our basement today for our new addition to our Store room. I got a nice long letter from Mrs. C. G. Vaughan today. We had ice cream tonight and got home at 10 p.m.
Tue., Aug. 14.
Awful warm. It was 104-degrees in the shade at 2 p.m. Trade fair, $73. We have been taking down things in the Store today, getting ready for the carpenters. Home tonight at 9:30 p.m. Emma and Robert were up to Mary's and met me as I came home.
Wed., Aug. 15.
Another real pretty day and not quite so warm. Trade very, very quiet most all day, though we ran $77 when night came. Mr. Andrews and I done quite a good deal of cleaning and changing and filling in on the shoe side and the shirt dept. Lem was at home all afternoon working on his house plans. We got home tonight at 9 p.m.

Up at 5 a.m. I helped Emma and she and Mrs. Keith went to Long Beach today. It was lovely out, not as hot as usual. Lem was at home all a.m., working on house plans. I'm working on the notion's counter today. Robert was with me today. We had a nice trade tonight after supper. We ran $99 today. I got a nice letter from Miss Lou today. Home at 8:30 p.m. Ate supper at 9 p.m. Bed at 10 p.m.
Fri., Aug. 17.
Up at 5:30 a.m. and cleaned out the chicken yard. I dusted the dining room square for Emma. Emma has the W. C. T. U. ladies with her this afternoon. Lovely day. Trade today was fine all day. I got my patterns all worked up on the notion counter. I changed one window a little tonight. Home at 9 p.m. I got a nice letter from Papa today. Wrote him a few lines tonight.
Sat., Aug. 18.
They commenced laying the foundation last eve for our new extension to our Store room. Lovely morning. Today trade has not been so rushing, though a very nice $168 day. Home at 11 p.m. I got in some dry goods this eve and a lot of shetland floss. The Misses Royar's, from Los Angeles, were down this afternoon.
Sun., Aug. 19.
Gloomy all day, but cool and nice. Up at 7:15 a.m. Emma and Robert at Sunday School. And we all went to the Congregational Church this a.m. We spent the afternoon at home. Emma, Robert, and I all took a little walk late this afternoon, up by the hospital. We came back down by the Store and got chocolate cream at Trueblood's. Spent the eve at home and retired early. It was nice and cool all day.
Mon., Aug. 20.
Somewhat of a heavy mist, or slight rain, this a.m. I got up at 6 a.m. I worked upstairs all day on shoes and the stock in general. I got things in fine shape for the back wall to come down. Had Essley to haul me up a lot of boxes this a.m., for my chicken pen. Robert and I took them to pieces today at noon. I commenced putting a back in our chicken pen this a.m. Trade nice today, $99.72.
Tue., Aug. 21.
Today has been a very pretty day indeed. Cool and nice. Lem was in Los Angeles all day. Andrews and I cleaned off the top shelf, hats and shirts. The carpenters commenced putting up the balcony this afternoon, on the shirt side. Today was the dullest day yet since Spring, $56. I went through all the caps tonight.
Wed., Aug. 22.
They commenced taking down the back wall last eve. Today was real pretty, cool and nice. We ran $96 today. The got the balcony up on the shoe side, very near complete. We moved all the hats up this eve. I got a nice letter from Retta today, also one from Mrs. Shaw. I wrote to Retta tonight. Home at 10 p.m. They got our wall down to the top windows this afternoon.
Thurs., Aug. 23.
Another real pretty day, nice an cool. Trade nice considering being torn up like we are, $74. They got all the wall down this afternoon. The carpenters commenced on the balcony on the dry goods side this afternoon. Mary and Emma went to San Pedro today. Got home at 9:15 p.m. I feel pretty well done up tonight. Don't think I was ever so worn out and tired!
Fri., Aug. 24.
Heavy fog this a.m. Trade fair all day, $71. The carpenters got along fine on the balcony. Today was real pretty and not very warm. Home tonight at 9:30 p.m. Mrs. Flanders was shot and killed last eve at Los Angeles. I got a letter from Papa this a.m. Emma got one from Cyrena this afternoon.

This has been one lovely day. And while trade was a little quiet most all day, still we had the rush and run at the last, $151. The carpenters finished the balcony in the Store this afternoon. I got home at 10:30 p.m.
Sun., Aug. 26.
Up at 7 a.m. We all attended Sunday School and Church. I was put in as sec'y of the Christian Sunday School this a.m. Lovely and warm today. I wrote a letter to Papa this afternoon. Emma, Robert and I took a little walk. Mary and Lem were here awhile this afternoon. Emma and I attended Mrs. Flanders funeral this afternoon. We went to the Baptist Church tonight.
Mon., Aug. 27.
Today has been a real pretty day. And trade has been fine all day long, $95. Miss Gallion was back at work again after a three-week vacation. I commenced work on the ladies underwear dept. today. Emma got a nice letter from Kate. I got home at 9 p.m. tonight. I had a fall over a box in the chicken pen tonight and hurt my leg.
Tue., Aug. 28.
Lovely morning. Up at 6 a.m. I finished the front of my chicken pen this a.m. I worked on invoicing children's underwear all day. L. A. and Andrews worked on the shelving upstairs today. Trade quiet, $60. I mailed the "Whittier Daily News" , of the 24th, with Whittier views in it, to Miss Lou tonight. Also one to Uncle John [Whitmore], Bro. Newt, and G. T. Taylor. Emma was at the Christian Church practicing tonight, until 10 p.m. Mr. Keith brought us some chickens tonight.
Wed., Aug. 29.
Another lovely day. Trade nice all day, $94. Lem and Andrews finished the new shelving on our overalls side tonight. I finished the children's underwear this eve. Emma and I bought Robert a new folding cot bed this afternoon, from Mr. Beyns ($5.50). Home tonight at 10:20 p.m. I got a nice letter from Miss Lou this eve.
Thurs., Aug. 30.
Another real nice day and busy most all day, $112. Lem and Andrews took down the shirt and overalls shelving this a.m. and got it very near done tonight, in spite of all of our good trade today. I got a nice letter from Papa today. Emma got one from Mary Haynie at noon. I didn't get home tonight until 10:25 p.m. I finished my "scratch pen" for the chickens today. I have the whole pen now finished.
Fri., Aug. 31.
A real pretty day. Trade, though, not quite as good today as yesterday. Lem and Andrews finished the shirt and overall shelving, completely, today at noon, and Andrews got one coat of paint on this eve. Emma attended the W. C. T. U. Meeting this afternoon. She also had choir practice tonight at her Church. I got home tonight at 9:45 p.m.

SEPTEMBER

Sat., Sept. 1.
Another real lovely day. Trade was nice all day long, $180. Andrews got all of our shirt and overalls shelving painted today. I got home tonight at 10:30 p.m. I got a real cute leather postal from Ret today. I got me a new stiff hat today. Oliver Bell stopped work for us tonight, to attend school.
Sun., Sept. 2.
Lovely day. We all attended Sunday School. I took up duties as "Secretary" for the Christian Sunday School this a.m. I remained for morning Church. Robert came home by himself. Lem, Mary and Lewis were at Mr. and Mrs. Johnson's today, for dinner. We spent all afternoon at home. Dr. Hall was up and sang some with Emma awhile. We had watermelons this afternoon and ice cream tonight after we came from Church. Dr. Hall was with us.
Mon., Sept. 3.
"Labor Day." Real foggy. Up at 6 a.m. I cleaned up and swept out Robert's playhouse. Today trade was unusually good.....fine all day long. We did not close at all today, but Misses Gallion and Rainbolt got off for the afternoon. Emma worked on our account slips for us all morning and afternoon. Remember Robert being run over this eve, late, but he was not very much hurt. He had his ear skinned and his knee cap cut. He and Emma were at home tonight. I swept out and came home at 9 p.m.
Tue., Sept. 4.
Today has been a real pretty day. Trade was very, very nice all day. I got the underwear memo done today. Lem and Andrews finished the shoe shelving on the hat case side today. Robert opened a big box of goods from St. Louis for us this afternoon. Emma and Robert were at the Store tonight. We got home at 9:30 p.m. I got a letter from Papa. I wrote Sunnie a postal.
Wed., Sept. 5.
Lovely, lovely day. Lem was in Los Angeles all day. Mr. Andrews and I got our overalls all worked back onto the new shelving. Trade nice all day. I worked on boy's overalls, playsuits, and men's jackets today and got them all in stock tonight. Home at 9:30 p.m. Lewis helped me sweep out tonight.
Thurs., Sept. 6.
Real foggy this a.m., though the sun came out at 10 a.m. Emma and Robert spent today with Sunnie. Hazel came home to stay with Robert. I got all of the underwear worked into bins this afternoon, leaving the rest of the new shelving clear for painting tomorrow. I didn't get any supper. Home at 9:30 p.m. I went up and got ice for Emma this a.m. before breakfast.
Fri., Sept. 7.
Another lovely day and a busy one again for Myers Bros. We got in quite a big lot of dry goods this eve. Mr. Pierce got back today at noon. He has been back to his home in Ind. for the past two months. I got a letter from Papa this a.m. He was to leave Marshall yesterday afternoon and will be here (if nothing happens) on Sunday a.m. I got home tonight at 9:30. Emma, Hazel and Robert were at Mary's tonight.
Sat., Sept. 8.
Lovely a.m. Up at 6 a.m. and took a fine bath. Lem left this a.m. at 10 o'clock for Chicago, St. Louis, and Miami, about a one-month's trip. Mary and Lewis have gone to the beach for a week. Miss Rainbolt goes out tonight for a two-week vacation. Today sure has been a busy one, $206. We had all we could handle. Emma helped us this eve and also Pierce all afternoon.
Sun., Sept. 9.
Up at 6:15 a.m. Met the 8:10, 8:35, 9:00, and 9:50 a.m. cars, looking for Papa to come. He came in on the 9:50 a.m. car. Lovely day, but very warm. Went to Sunday School and Emma attended Church. I spent the balance of the day at home, talking with Papa. We walked around some this evening, then to the Store with him. Emma, Hazel, Robert and I took a little walk tonight. I played some for Hazel tonight.
Mon., Sept. 10.
Heavy fog most all a.m. Papa, Emma, and Robert all went to Long Beach today to spend the day with Mary and Lewis. Hazel went home with them this a.m. Mr. Pierce was at home, sick, all day. Miss Gallion came back for awhile tonight after supper. Trade today not very brisk, though we ran about $60.
Tue., Sept. 11.
Another nice day. Trade not rushing at all, but still at the close of the day's work we had run $85. Pierce and Andrews commenced moving the shirts up onto the balcony today. We got our showcase glass put in yesterday and moved back today. We also put the upright case back that has now been repainted. E changed the dress case window and washed it in and out, also washed the two new cases. Emma made me off our statement of accounts this eve, to mail tomorrow.
Wed., Sept. 12.
Heavy fog for a long while this a.m. Up at 6 a.m. and watered things well for Emma. Trade nice all eve. We ran $107 today. They laid the floor today in our new part of Store. I wrote a letter to Retta last eve and one to Lem this a.m. I mailed a big lot of statements today. We collected about $38 from them this eve. The lights were out on us a long while tonight. Home at 9:30 p.m.
Thurs., Sept. 13.
"Jones & Ely" have a big sale on today, for a few days. Trade not at all rushing, though at the wind up we had $74.90 for the day, which was not at all bad. Finished the men's underwear dept. up in fine shape and worked it onto the shelf. Pierce at home, sick, this afternoon and also this eve. Sunnie down for awhile this afternoon and done a little shopping and was up to see Emma. Papa commenced on the hat case this afternoon.
Fri., Sept. 14.
We were married 8-years ago today. Emma, Robert and I went up to Los Angeles this a.m. I bought some goods for the Store and then shopped with Emma for a coat, but we did not buy anything. Home at noon. Met Sunnie on the street. Trade very, very quiet all day. Only a $54 day. I done some overhauling of stock this eve. Heard from Lem tonight.
Sat., Sept. 15.
Today has been a lovely day. Trade not very brisk any part of the day. But we made up for it tonight and in all we ran $189. We ran $590 for the week. I got home at 11 p.m. Feel somewhat weary. Emma helped us out tonight. Mary and Lewis got home from the beach today.
Sun., Sept. 16.
Up at 6:30 a.m. Emma, Robert and I all went up to Ocean Park and Venice today ($2.35). We took our lunch with us. Andrews went uptown with us this a.m. We had a nice day of it and home at 8 p.m.
Mon., Sept. 17.
Today sure has been a warm one...about as warm as any this summer. Trade was very nice all day. We worked the men's gloves and hdkfs. all up on the shelves today. Mr. Pierce oiled our new floor on the balcony today. Emma finished copying the memo for me, to send to Lem tomorrow. I mailed Lem some papers to St. Louis today. Home at 9 p.m. Little Robert started to his first school this a.m.
Tue., Sept. 18.
This has been one of those hot, hot days! I wrote a letter to Lem this a.m. and sent him the package. Trade was not very brisk this a.m., or this eve. Though we ran $64 for the day. Little Robert likes school fine. He only stays until noon now. Emma and Robert were at the Store with me tonight. I commenced working the notions onto the shelves today. We had a nice watermelon at the Store this eve.
Wed., Sept. 19.
It was sure warm again this a.m. Trade was very, very quiet today, about as quiet as any this season. Papa put glass doors in our hat case today. Mr. Pierce finished oiling the Store floor tonight. Mary and Miss Rainbolt were at Los Angeles today. Papa dined with us. Emma and I listened to a fine phonograph tonight as we sat out on the front porch.
Thurs., Sept. 20.
Lovely morning. Not quite so warm. I went uptown this a.m., and I got back at noon. Trade very quiet all day, $51. Emma and Robert were at the Store tonight and came home with me at 9 p.m. I bought Miss Gallion and Emma, each, a pair of white silk long gloves.
Fri., Sept. 21.
Today has been nice and pleasant. Trade same as it was yesterday, $54. I was up to Los Angeles again this a.m. I bought some goods there. I made a suitcase window today and am changing my shoe window. I worked until 10 p.m. on it tonight. Emma got a letter from Mary Haynie today, telling us about her coming out in Nov.
Sat., Sept. 22.
Lovely day. Trade not so very rushing any part of the day, though we ran $138.53. The lights went out on us for quite awhile tonight, which hurts us a whole lot. Papa did not get the hat case done today either. Home at 11 p.m.
Sun., Sept. 23.
Lovely a.m., but cool. Up at 7 a.m. and got ice. Papa went up to Los Angeles this a.m., to spend today with Lyt and Sunnie. We all attended Sunday School. I wrote Lem a letter at the Store this a.m., after Sunday School. I wrote Miss Lou a letter after dinner. Spent the afternoon at home. Mary was here and ate watermelon with us this eve. Mr. and Mrs. Anderson were here tonight awhile.
Mon., Sept. 24.
Another lovely and cool day. Trade fair, but not at all rushing. I commenced cleaning my side of the house today. Papa got the hat case done this eve and Mr. A. got one coat of paint on the inside of it tonight. I got home tonight at 10 p.m. It is real cool out tonight.
Tue., Sept. 25.
Today has been a real pretty day. Trade nice, considering the time of year. Miss Gallion helped me brush the dress goods today. I didn't quite get my side of the house cleaned today, but I worked tonight until 10 p.m. Emma played for Miss Agnue tonight at the Friend's Church. They came to the Store afterwards and waited for me, so I took them down and got ice cream.
Wed., Sept. 26.
Another nice day....cool and pleasant. Trade fair. I finished cleaning the dry goods side today. It was Miss Gallion's birthday today. I gave her a flannel kimona. Andrews finished painting our new hat case this a.m. Mary went up to Los Angeles, so Papa took dinner with us today. He is not working now.

Another lovely day, nice and cool. We got all of our hats in the case today, complete. I cleaned up on the balcony and dusted, also worked up all of our caps tonight. Emma has a very bad cold, but she was up to the Store tonight and made sales off for us, as Mr. Andrews went up to Los Angeles tonight. We had ice cream tonight.
Sat., Sept. 29.
Lovely, lovely.....but hot. Trade very, very quiet. I made up an overall and tennis shoe order this a.m., also finished all of this month's tickets. They commenced work again today on our Store, putting up part of our back platform. Home tonight at 10:15 p.m.
Sun., Sept. 30.
Yesterday was the warmest day of the season. Slept very, very little last night. Got up and had a bath, then got some ice. We all went to Sunday School and Emma stayed for Church. Remember the marble in the water basin. I wrote Retta a letter after Sunday School. We spent the afternoon at home. Miss Gallion came up and stayed awhile with us. We all went to the Congregational Church tonight and heard the Chinese. We had wind and lightning tonight and another very warm night of it.

Mon., Oct. 1.
Lovely, lovely....but an awful warm morning again. Robert got a little rabbit this a.m. Today trade was very nice. I felt so bad tonight that I did not go back to the Store after supper. My head ached and my back hurt me so. Mary was over for awhile tonight. Lovely out tonight and a great deal cooler.
Tue., Oct. 2.
Lovely this a.m. Much cooler. I stayed at home until 9 a.m. Today has been nice. I changed the hats in our hat case this a.m., also labeled a lot of hat boxes. Trade today nice, $75. Emma and Robert were up to the Store tonight. We had ice cream tonight after we closed up. They floored our back porch this morning.
Wed., Oct. 3.
Today has been a lovely day. I went up to Los Angeles this a.m. and bought some dry goods. I bought Emma a music roll this a.m. Got back at noon. Trade fair today, $60. I framed a picture for Miss Gallion this afternoon. Andrews went uptown this eve.
Thurs., Oct. 4.
Another lovely day. Trade fair. They commenced lathing the new part of Store today. Lem got home from his Miami trip this afternoon. I was out doing some collecting today. Lem brought Emma a lovely plate and some roller skates for Robert. Emma and Robert were at the Store tonight and came home with me.
Fri., Oct. 5.
Another real pretty day....nice and cool. They built part of the ladies room for our new Store. I made me a closet clothes rack this a.m. And I made a water jar box this afternoon. Trade fair all day. Mary has a dreadful cold. Lem was over tonight, looking at our heater. I made a corset window tonight. Emma was elected President of the W. C. T. U. this afternoon. Lem brought Emma her music book.
Sat., Oct. 6.
Lovely morning. Today has been fine. Trade, though, was slow. Very quiet most of the day. The carpenters got the posts up for the balcony today and the toilet room enclosed. Trade ran $141 today. Home at 10:30 p.m. Mr. Holbrook commenced our lawn yesterday.
Sun., Oct. 7.
Lovely a.m. I got up and had a bath, then got ice for Emma. We all went to Sunday School and Church. We heard Emma's new preacher, his first sermon. Papa was here awhile after breakfast and also for dinner. Today was very, very warm and I have not felt well today. Misses Agnue was here and sang for us this eve and I phoned Miss Gallion to come over and we all ate watermelon and chatted. We attended Emma's Church again tonight.
Mon., Oct. 8.
Lovely, lovely out. Emma and I, also Miss Gallion, went uptown this a.m. And they each bought a wrap apiece. We then got lunch and went to Redondo and spent the afternoon ($3.05). Got home at 6 p.m. I brought Robert a paint outfit. He stayed with Lelia this afternoon. Trade today was nice, $93. Home from Store tonight at 9 p.m.
Tue., Oct. 9.
Another real pretty day. Trade, though, only fair. Mr. Cornell here at the Store today and ran the wire on the balcony for our new lights. Mr. Evans sowed clover on our lawn last eve. I painted spots on the balcony tonight, for our new lights. Emma and Robert were up to Mary's tonight. I got home at 9 p.m.
Wed., Oct. 10.
Today has been a real bright pretty day. Trade, though, was somewhat quiet. Misses Gallion and Rainbolt and I have been working the notions off of the center counter. Mr. Cornell put 14 of our new lamps on the balcony this afternoon. They look fine all lighted up tonight. I felt so bad this eve with my back that I went to see Dr. Stokes about it. Home at 8:30 p.m.

A real pretty day, nice and cool. Emma done my sweeping for me this a.m. I have been feeling pretty bad all day so I spent the day at home. Mary was here this a.m. and Papa dined with us. Emma took her music lesson this a.m. She was also out for awhile this evening. Lem and Papa were making pattern cases today. I wrote Retta a letter this eve.
Fri., Oct. 12.
Heavy fog this a.m. Emma done my work again this morning, though I feel a good deal better. I went to the Store at 9 a.m. Commenced taking a different medicine. Lem and Papa finished the patterns cases today, also commenced on the new shelving. We worked the patterns in this eve. We got in two big tray loads of dry goods today. Home at 9:30 p.m. Pierce was off tonight.
Sat., Oct. 13.
Another lovely day, but trade was very, very quiet. Though we had a big trade tonight and ran $158 for the day and over $500 for the week. We opened quite a lot of our new goods today. Emma, Robert and I walked home with Miss Gallion tonight. Got home at 10:30 p.m. Mr. Pierce, Lem and Andrews finished the shelving in the new part of the Store today, on the shoe side.

Lovely a.m. I got up at 7 o'clock. We all attended Sunday School and the morning services. Papa dined with us today. He also spent part of the afternoon with us, at home. Mr. and Mrs. Homer Trueblood were here awhile. We were up to Lem and Mary's new home awhile this afternoon. I watered our new lawn good this eve. We attended Emma's Church tonight. Remember Miss Agnue's fall! We had ice cream. Robert stayed at Mrs. Trueblood's.

One carpenter enclosed the back part of our Store this a.m., and this afternoon, together. Andrews and Lem commenced on the shelving above. Trade was very nice all day. I have spent the day in marking new goods. Emma, Robert and I were over to Mrs. Trueblood's this evening, to a "surprise party" for Mrs. Trueblood's anniversary. We played Flinch and ate ice cream. About 25 were there. The Misses Agnue's leave tomorrow.
Sybil Gallion and Esther Rainbolt Tue., Oct. 16.
Another lovely day, though somewhat cool this morning, early. Trade today was very nice. They laid the balance of the floor on the balcony today, at Store. I marked up lots of new goods today and Misses Gallion and Rainbolt came back tonight and we got the balance of our new goods opened tonight. I worked until 10 p.m. Emma and Robert remained at home, as Robert has such a bad cold. I walked home tonight with Miss Gallion from the Store.

A very heavy fog this a.m., and very, very cool. Robert has a very bad cold, though he went to school. I walked part of the way with him. We got everything that came in marked today. Miss Gallion and Rainbolt have been pin-ticketing all day, and worked again tonight. I straightened up the counters tonight. I came home at 9 p.m., as Robert still is not well. He came home at noon. I got him a pair of smoked glasses tonight.
Thurs., Oct. 18.
Today they put in the upper window frames in the back of the Store. Lem and Andrews finished the balcony shelving and commenced on the ladies room shelving. Andrews did some painting this eve, late. We got all our goods pin-ticketed and put up on the new shelving. Robert was at home all day, real sick. Andrews and Pierce went to Los Angeles tonight. A young man was killed at the steam laundry this a.m. I got home at 8:30 tonight.
Fri., Oct. 19.
Another nice day, but very cool. The dust is blowing some. Trade was not very brisk. Robert is a good deal better this afternoon. Emma got a letter from Blanche and Mable [Carpenter] today. Papa and Lem are working on the shelving on the ladies side. I labeled quite a number of boxes today. Mr. Triplett is putting glass in our back windows. Remember Miss Gallion's skirt of paint this eve and how I cleaned it!
Sat., Oct. 20.
A real cold morning, then a lovely day overhead, but for the dust! It blew all day. They, at last, got the back part of the Store enclosed late this eve, with all the glass. Andrews got his painting done on the shoe side of the house. But Lem and Papa didn't get the shelving done on the ladies side. Trade was fine all day and night, $221. Miss Gallion had to go home after supper as her father was taken very ill. Robert is at home sick, yet, so Emma did not get down. Home at 11:15 p.m.
Sun., Oct. 21.
Lovely a.m., but cold. I watered the lawn good. Remained at home all day with Robert and let Emma got to Sunday School and Church. Papa was here for awhile this a.m., also for dinner. We had some of Ret's good ham this morning, for breakfast. I wrote Retta a letter this afternoon. Lem and Mary came over for awhile and then we went with them, up to their new home. Robert stayed over with Helen Trueblood, and we went to the Store for awhile. We spent the night at home and Emma got us a hot supper.
Mon., Oct. 22.
This is "Klingburg & Co.'s" big opening day. today was awful windy. Miss Gallion and I worked the ladies and children's underwear dept. back into the new shelving today. Emma and Robert were down to the Store this a.m. for awhile. We had all we could handle all afternoon and tonight. Trade fine. Lem finished the ladies room shelves today. They put the door up to the ladies room today and the banister to the basement...also the windows in the basement. Home at 9:30 p.m.
Tue., Oct. 23.
Lovely day. Robert is quite sick again this a.m. I have tried to get Dr. Stokes all day, but didn't get him until 3 p.m. I stayed with Robert while Emma attended Bro. Bateman's funeral from 2 to 4:15 p.m. We piled all of our comforts on our new shelving this a.m. All of the balcony lights were finished this evening. The carpenter is putting in the back of the showcases today, and he hung both closet doors. Trade only fair all day. Somewhat windy today. I mailed Mrs. Miller and Ostrich Book today.
Wed., Oct. 24.
Lovely a.m. I watered the lawn good. Trade today was only fair. We moved all of the clothing up on the balcony today....also the clothing counter and Andrews gave it one coat of paint. We moved all the trunks and grips up on the balcony tonight. The carpenter finished the doors to the show window today. Robert does not seem much better. Home at 10 p.m. We commenced using our new closet.
Thurs., Oct. 25.
I took a good hot "salt-water bath" this a.m. I got 20 lbs. of nuts last eve from Mr. Johnson @ 11-cents lb. Today has run nice, but trade a little quiet. Lem got the last pattern case done today. Mary was at Los Angeles all day. Papa dined with us. Robert has had a high fever all day, so I had the Dr. again this eve. We moved the work bench and lumber out of Store tonight and Misses Gallion and Rainbolt worked the underwear into the new bins. Mary and Mrs. Woodard were here tonight for awhile, and, as Robert felt so bad, I remained at home with him tonight.
Fri., Oct. 26.
Mr. Beal took our sideboard out this a.m., which belonged to Mr. and Mrs. Russell. Today has been a lovely day. Trade, though, quiet. We moved our center counters out today and back into the ladies new room. We also moved our silk cases, and cotton and needle cases up front. Miss Gallion and us worked until 10 p.m. Andrews finished the windows this eve. Miss Rainbolt was up to Los Angeles tonight. Dr. Stokes was here this eve and said that Robert was much better. Lewis gave Robert a pen and pencil box tonight.
Sat., Oct. 27.
Today has been a very, very windy day. Trade was quiet all a.m., but this afternoon and tonight trade was nice and we ran $156 for the day. We got our new hat case today. Robert was quite a good deal better today. The doctor came to see him again tonight. Andrews, Pierce, and Lem had a feast of oysters tonight. I got home at 10:30 p.m.
Sun., Oct. 28.
A lovely day. Up at 7 a.m. I helped Emma and then she attended Church. I spent the morning with Robert. I went to Mr. Jeb Osborn's funeral this afternoon. Lyt, Lem, Sunnie, and Mary were here awhile this afternoon. We gave them some of Retta's ham. Today has been quite warm. Papa was here this a.m.
Mon., Oct. 29.
Up at 6:15 a.m. I watered the lawn good, then I cut a few weeks on Chase's side of yard. I had a lot of lumber brought up from the Store today, to have for wood this winter. Lem had skirt and coat racks made today. I finished the bedding and comfort dept., also the trunk and grip dept., and the clothing dept. We got six new tables today for the center of Store. I worked until 9 p.m. Emma made a curtain for the pantry and clothes shelves today.
Tue., Oct. 30.
Up at 6 a.m. I watered the lawn good and raked and cleaned the side next to Mrs. Chase. I also raked the side and back of the wood house. Today was lovely and warm. Miss Gallion made us two long covers today, for the clothes and blankets. Pierce and Rainbolt spent today rolling goods. Lem put up our skirt racks. I arranged our tables and filled them up tonight. Home at 9:30 p.m. Robert sat up most of the day.
Wed., Oct. 31.
Halloween! Up at 6 a.m. and watered lawn, then cleaned up around the tree by the porch. I fixed the bolt on the bathroom door, and also fixed the hinge on the screen in our room at noon. Remember little Robert and mother with the pumpkin and lights, scaring me and Booker when I came home for supper. I commenced cleaning and filling my side in on the dry goods side, and Pierce commenced on the shoe side. Home at 9:15 p.m.

NOVEMBER

Thurs., Nov. 1.
Up at 6 a.m. Watered lawn and took up a lot of trash that I cleaned up and put in the alley. Did lots of other things around the house. Robert was better this a.m. At the Store I worked on my side again today, though I did not get done. Pierce finished the shoes downstairs. Mary was at Los Angeles today. I stayed with Robert tonight and Emma went to a Church reception for the pastor.
Fri., Nov. 2.
Up at 6:45 a.m. Watered lawn and cut the weeds on Woodard's side of our yard. Pierce worked on the hose, collar and notion depts. today. I finished my side of dry goods tonight at 10 p.m. Lem was in Los Angeles this eve. Trade today very nice. The carpenters covered our ladies room top this eve. Little Robert was a good deal better today. Bro. Martin came to see him this afternoon.
Sat., Nov. 3.
Up at 5:45 a.m. Took a good salt bath this a.m. and done other work. Watered lawn and cleaned the yard next to Woodard's, also cleaned the chicken pen. Trade today was nice all day, $251. They ran the basement stairway today and cut the window in the ladies room. The gas plant burnt tonight, at about 9 p.m. I got home at 10:30 p.m. I bought a new shaving brush today, 50-cents.
Sun., Nov. 4.
Foggy for awhile, then sun came out and it was a pretty day. Lem measured me today, for a suit. I went up to Los Angeles this a.m. at 10 a.m. to meet Mary Haynie. I spent the day there, but no Mary! I spent part of the afternoon with Lyt. Left Los Angeles at 8:30 p.m. for home. Edgar Calhoun was with me, looking for Mrs. Snelling. But she didn't come either.
Mon., Nov. 5.
This a.m. was cool and foggy. Emma went up to Los Angeles to meet Mary Haynie. Mary Myers stayed with Robert and got dinner for us. Well....Mary did not come and Emma stayed until 6:30 p.m. But Mrs. Shaw did and came on home with Emma. So Mary got supper for us. Robert is so much better. I got home at 10 p.m.
Tue., Nov. 6.
Another lovely a.m. Trade nice all day. Miss Gallion and I have been working back in the ladies room all day. Well....Mary Haynie came at last! She got in this afternoon at 3 o'clock. She looks like the same old girl! I worked at the Store tonight until 11 p.m. Myers Bros. furnished the canvas for the election returns tonight. I gave Robert 35-cents today for taking his medicine while he was sick.
Wed., Nov. 7.
Today has been real, real hot all day. Miss Gallion and I finished the ladies room this eve and it is now complete and clean. I worked until 10 p.m. tonight on my own side. The painters worked tonight until 9 p.m. Trade was nice all day.
Thurs., Nov. 8.
Another lovely day. I worked on my side of the Store today. The painters painted all day at the Store today. Trade fair all day. I came home at 8 p.m. and played Flinch tonight with Mary, Emma, and Mrs. Shaw. Robert went outdoors a few minutes this afternoon. Mary got her trunk this afternoon. Edgar Calhoun and Mrs. J. D. Snelling were down today.
Fri., Nov. 9.
Another real warm day. Trade nice all day, $81. Lem was at Los Angeles half of the day. I finished cleaning my side of the house today, and also Mr. Pierce and I cleaned up out back of the Store. I worked away all of our lace curtains today. Mary and Emma were down to the Store tonight. Mrs. Shaw made Emma a tea jacket.
Sat., Nov. 10.
Another real warm day, and a busy one too. We have had a nice trade all day. Mrs. Shaw and Mary were up to the Store this a.m. They left some money with us, on deposit. Emma and Mary were up tonight. I got home at 11 p.m. We ran $240 today. My feet hurt me tonight. Miss Gallion was at home, sick, this eve.
Sun., Nov. 11.
Cool and foggy this a.m. We (Emma, Mary and I) attended Sunday School while Mrs. Shaw kept Robert for us. They remained for Church and went to the Store and wrote a letter to Rettie. Lloyd Jessup and Arthur Greenabaum came down this afternoon and spent it with us. We all took a walk up to Lem and Mary's new home. We all spent tonight at home.
Mon., Nov. 12.
Another lovely day, and very, very warm. Trade fair all day. Emma and Mary and Mrs. Shaw attended a little gathering at Mr. and Mrs. Maple's. Mrs. Gallion kept Robert for us. I gave Emma a skirt, belt, and pair of shoes this a.m. The painters put on the last coat of paint on my side today at Store. Andrews commenced work again for us today. Home at 9:30 p.m.
Tue., Nov. 13.
Another lovely day. Real warm. The painters got our Store all done on the inside today. They put in the cement floor today, in the basement. I finished the upstairs today on both sides. Mary was in Los Angeles all day. Trade was nice today. I got home at 10 p.m. Mary was up for awhile tonight.
Wed., Nov. 14.
Today has been a lovely day, and very, very warm. I have been about half sick all day, though I have managed to work. I did not go back to the Store at all tonight after supper. Instead I went to bed. Emma and Mary went downtown tonight for some medicine for me. We put a little "bridge" across the Store tonight.
Thurs., Nov. 15.
Another lovely a.m. I felt much better this morning and went to the Store as usual. I made a white and green window today....all white doilies, table linens, napkins and hdkfs. I also made a shoe, hose and hat window. Robert was downtown with Mary this a.m., his first time in a month. They put the first coat on the front of Store this afternoon and we took down our awning.
Fri., Nov. 16.
Up at 6:20 a.m. I watered the lawn good, swept the walks, and cleaned out the chicken yard. Lovely and pleasant today. I finished of the ladies toilet room today at the Store and it looks real cute. I also worked until 11:15 tonight on draping our new posts with various goods. Lem was in Los Angeles all day. We got in a big box of new sales books this eve.
Sat., Nov. 17.
Lovely a.m., but cool. Mrs. Shaw was quite sick last night. Today turned out to be one awful, awful windy and dusty, dusty, day.....all day and all night, and it hurt trade quite a good deal. Still we ran $170. Mary Myers and Mary Haynie went to Los Angeles this afternoon, to a show. Emma did not get to go. She had to stay with Robert and Mrs. Shaw. I got home at 10 p.m. I wore my overcoat.
Sun., Nov. 18.
Very cool and windy again. I got up at 6:30 a.m. Emma and I went to Sunday School and I came back and stayed with Robert so that Mrs. Shaw and Mary could go to Church. While it has been a pretty day overhead, it has been a very cool, windy, disagreeable day. I made up a little extract order this afternoon, to Colgates, and mailed same. Mary Haynie and I took a long stroll this eve, late. Mary and Emma attended Church tonight and Mrs. Shaw, Robert, and I remained at home.
Mon., Nov. 19.
This a.m. was real cold. Trade was nice today, $140. Mr. Pierce was out all afternoon, advertising our Thanksgiving Sale. Mr. Andrews and I fixed up our "notion case" again today and he gave it a coat of varnish tonight. I got home at 9:30 p.m. Played a game of Flinch with Mary Haynie, Robert and Emma. Mary and Robert beat us!
Tue., Nov. 20.
Today has been a very pretty day, but also cool. Mrs. Shaw left us today for Long Beach for awhile. Trade today fine. They whitened our Store ceiling today. I worked tonight until 10:45 p.m., washing and cleaning up after them. I think I have done more work today than I have ever done yet in California, in one day. Little Robert started to school again today.
Wed., Nov. 21.
Up at 6:30 a.m. I watered the lawn good. Emma and Mary Haynie went to Los Angeles today. I got dinner at the restaurant. We fixed up the notion counter again today. Mrs. J. D. Snelling came to see Mary Myers today. We all worked at the Store tonight until 10 p.m. Mr. Pierce was out advertising our Thanksgiving Sale again.
Thurs., Nov. 22.
Well, of all days, this one has hit the spot....a real downpour of hail (almost like a snow) for about 15-minutes this morning. We also had a hard rain most all day. Trade, though, was fine all day, $187. We worked late tonight, getting ready for our Thanksgiving Sale which opens tomorrow. Tired and cold, home at 11:15 p.m.
Fri., Nov. 23.
This was the opening day of our 5-day Thanksgiving Sale. All eight of us could not handle the trade! It was a $386 cash day. Home at 11:30 p.m. I certainly feel tired and worn out, but let the good work go on! No rain today, but it was very cold and disagreeable.
Sat., Nov. 24.
This was a lovely day, after the hail, rain and cold. Trade was brisk all day, the biggest day yet in Calif., $486. Besides that there was about $35 on tickets. We didn't get stock up until 11:30 p.m. I walked home with Miss Gallion at 11:45 p.m., and then came back to the barber shop and got a shave. Home at 12:25 a.m.
Sun., Nov. 25.
A lovely Sunday morning. Up at 7:15 a.m., with tired and sore feet. Emma attended church this a.m., while Mary H., Robert and I stayed at home. I was at the Store for awhile. Papa was here for dinner. Miss Rainbolt and Miss Gallion drove up as were eating dinner. Remember our large strawberries and cream for dinner! It was a lovely afternoon. We all took a stroll. Lem and Lewis were at San Pedro today. Mary H. and Emma went to Church tonight, so Robert and I stayed at home.
Mon., Nov. 26.
When the clock struck 7 o'clock this a.m., I arose. It was pouring down rain and it kept up all morning. This afternoon was cold, windy and disagreeable, but trade all day was great, $316. Lem was in Los Angeles all a.m. Emma helped us this afternoon. Robert remained at home all day, as it was so bad out. I got home at 9:30 p.m. I got me a pretty new suit today, from "Born's." It is a dark brown check.
Tue., Nov. 27.
While today has been gloomy and cold, still trade was nice, $316. I didn't get home until after 11 p.m. We fixed five "surprise" tables tonight, for tomorrow.....$1 to $5 each. I feel pretty well worn out tonight.
Wed., Nov. 28.
Today has been a lovely day, but a little bit cold. Trade today just fine. We have had all we could handle today. In fact, have had all we could handle during our whole 5-days Sale. We sold $329.59 today and 1,820.14 for the 5-days. Last Saturday we sold $480.24, the largest day yet for Whittier. We took down all of our decorations tonight and got things well cleaned up. I got by a little after 11 p.m.
Thurs., Nov. 29.
Thanksgiving Day. We were closed all day long. It was raining and cloudy this a.m. We had intended to go to Los Angeles today, but gave it up. We spent today at home. I worked on my books today and was at the Store while this a.m. I cleaned my show windows out. We were invited to dine with Mary today, but the rain stopped us. I went back to the Store this afternoon and made one window of pillow tops and fancy work. I also fixed our side case of ladies 25-cent hdkfs. Then I filled up all of the center tables in the Store. At home tonight and played Flinch with Emma, Mary Haynie, and Robert.
Fri., Nov. 30.
Lovely morning, but cold. Today trade has been fine all day long, $154. I made a men's furnishings window display today. Emma had a tooth filled this afternoon. She, Mary, and Robert were at the Store awhile today. I got home tonight at 9:30 p.m. We got a tier of wood this a.m. Mary Myers spent today at Los Angeles. Papa took dinner with us.

DECEMBER

Sat., Dec. 1.
Today has been a real pretty day, but it has been cool. Trade was real nice all day, $245.34. Miss Rainbolt was away this afternoon. I got a new stove and had it put up in our dining room this a.m. Emma and Mary were at the Store this afternoon and helped us out. I got home at 10 p.m. Robert and Emma made a deposit, each, in the bank today.
Sun., Dec. 2.
This morning I was up at 6:15 a.m., and took a good hot bath. We attended Sunday School and Church, while Mary H. kept Robert. I wrote a letter to Retta today after lunch. It rained last night and this morning. It was cloudy and gloomy all afternoon. I wrote a letter to C. D. Haynie, Salina, Kansas, this afternoon. We spent all of the afternoon at home. I went uptown and got some fresh oysters for supper, and we had good soup. Emma and Mary H. went to Church. I remained with Robert.
Mon., Dec. 3.
Dark and gloomy this a.m. And it has been all day, though trade has been nice. I made a ribbon memo this a.m. and a dry goods and notion memo this afternoon. Andrews gave our new ribbon shelving the last coat of paint today. I came home at 7 p.m., for good, tonight. Still it is raining. I wrote to Taylor Casebolt tonight, and afterwards made a few signs.
Tue., Dec. 4.
Today has been a very pretty day. And trade has been nice all day long. Lem has been in Los Angeles all day. Robert started into school again this a.m. Mary and Emma were at the Store this a.m. and Emma helped me with the tickets. Mr. Andrews, Mr. Pierce, and I, oiled the Store floor tonight, all over. I got a nice letter from Mr. G. T. Taylor this eve.
Wed., Dec. 5.
Today has been a lovely day. Trade fine all day, $164. We have been washing and changing the show cases. Emma and Mary Haynie were at Los Angeles and the "Ostrich Farm" today. Emma got her a pretty $5 white plume. She brought Robert a game of "Old Maid." Mrs. Shaw came down from Los Angeles this eve, to stay a few days. I worked at the Store tonight until 11 p.m.
Thurs., Dec. 6.
Today has been another real pretty day, and trade nice all day long. We finished our show case washing and rearranging today. Worked tonight until 10:30 p.m.
Fri., Dec. 7.
Another lovely a.m. Lem and I spent this morning in Los Angeles, buying some window fixtures and some things for Xmas displays. We met Lyt for lunch. I came home at 2:10 p.m., but Lem remained. We have had a nice trade all day. We got in lots of new goods tonight. Mary and Miss Gallion, also Miss Rainbolt, attended a "to do" at the State School tonight. I got home at 10 p.m.
Sat., Dec. 8.
It looked very much like rain most of the day, though it did not. Mary H., Emma, and Robert spent today in Los Angeles, looking at toys. Mrs. Shaw got me my dinner. Trade today not at all rushing, but still very good, $161. We ran $832 for the week. I got home at 10:30 p.m.
Sun., Dec. 9.
Gloomy and cold. Emma and I attended Sunday School and Church this a.m. Mrs. Shaw and Mary H. remained at home all day. We spent the afternoon at home. I went up to the Store at 4 p.m. for a little while. It rained all afternoon and was very dark. Mary and I went to the Congregational Church tonight, to a "lantern show." It was just fine.....pictures of Northern California.
Mon., Dec. 10.
Today has been another gloomy day, though trade has been fine. I decorated the Store some today, on its sides and racks. I also made a ribbon display. Mr. Andrews made us our handkerchief booth pillows today. I went to school after Robert this afternoon. Home at 10 p.m. I made a "Myers Bros. White House" sign tonight. Mrs. Shaw left for Los Angeles this eve.
Tue., Dec. 11.
Another gloomy, rainy day. But, nevertheless, it was a nice day of trade, $131. We put up our center handkerchief rack today and tonight and it is a beauty! We got our bells on it tonight. Emma and Mary put hdkfs. up on our balcony, also ribbons, this afternoon. I worked tonight until 11:20 p.m. O! My! How it rained tonight. Robert put a lot of our whirl-a-gigs together this eve.
Wed., Dec. 12.
Today has been a very, very pretty day indeed! And trade has been fine, $154. I changed my pillow tops from the window to the wall display today. We finished our decorations in Store tonight and it is certainly beautiful. Mary H. and Emma went to the Congregational Church tonight, to the Picture Show. Robert stayed with me at the Store. We sold all of our rugs today, to "Bryan & Zimmer." Home at 10:30 p.m.
Thurs., Dec. 13.
Today has been a real pretty day. Trade has been so nice all day that I only got to work on my window until noon. And I did not get it done. Miss Gallion was at home, sick, today. Emma and Mary finished our handkerchiefs in the ladies dept. this a.m. Emma helped us this afternoon. Mary H. went to Los Angeles this eve, to stay until tomorrow.

Lovely morning. Robert said his first little speech today, at school. He just did fine. Emma and Mary H. went to hear him and I gave him 25-cents for doing so well. Today has been a lovely day and trade fine. Lem was in Los Angeles all day, very near. I made a very pretty shoe and tie window today, and also finished my other window. We now have our Store in nice shape for Christmas. I got home at 11 p.m.

Sat., Dec. 15.
A lovely, lovely a.m. and it has stayed that way all day. Trade nice, $238. We got in a big box of ladies collars and pillow tops today. Mary Haynie helped us at the Store all afternoon. Emma helped at her bazaar this afternoon. I got home tonight at 10:30 p.m.
Sun., Dec. 16.
Lovely Sunday morning. Emma, Robert and I attended Sunday School. Mary remained at home and got dinner for us. Mary, Emma, Robert and Mary Myers, and Miss Gallion, and myself took a walk up on the hills this eve and met Lem and Lewis. We got lots of holly and saw the sheep and the shepherd and his dogs. Miss Gallion came in and took supper with us and Emma gave us hot biscuits tonight. Mary H. and I walked home with Miss G. I got ice cream and cake for supper tonight.
Mon., Dec. 17.
Today has been one sure pretty day. Trade fine all day, $309. Robert gave away "humming birds" for us all day today. I didn't get home tonight until 11:30. Pierce and I put up some Xmas packages tonight. Mary H. and Emma helped us about all day. Mary Myers and Lewis were at Los Angeles all day. I gave Mary H. two photo pillow tops tonight.
Tue., Dec. 18.
Another real pretty nice day. And trade nice all day, $189. This was very near $500 in the last two days. I done up more packages tonight. Got home at 11:30 p.m. Mary got me a typewriter, from "K & Co." tonight, for Robert.
Wed., Dec. 19.
Another lovely, lovely day. Trade nice all day long. Lem was in Los Angeles all day. Mary H. and Emma attended a reception at Mrs. Smith's this evening. We have had all we could handle today, $204. I had such a bad cold today that I came home with Emma, Robert and Mary H. tonight at 9:30 p.m. I finished getting my Xmas packages up today and also helped Mary Myers with hers this a.m.
Thurs., Dec. 20.
Lovely out, grand! Very warm at noon. Emma went up to Los Angeles this afternoon. Mary H. helped us at the Store this afternoon. Neither Mr. Pierce, nor Miss Gallion feeling well today. Trade fine all day, $196. That makes over $800 for the week so far. My cold feels a little heavy on my chest tonight. Home at 9:30 p.m.
Fri., Dec. 21.
Another lovely day. And trade has been fine, $190.90. Both Miss Gallion and Mr. Pierce have been sick and away all day. I cleaned both of my windows out tonight and did not get home until 12:10 a.m. Feel a little tired and worn out! Mr. and Mrs. Chase gave Robert a tree today, for his Christmas tree.
Sat., Dec. 22.
Today was fine....real warm. And trade was immense all day! Mr. Pierce was not in all day, but Mr. Reid, Mary Haynie and three Myers' all helped us and we ran $390......over $1,400 for the week. I got home tonight at 12:30 a.m. Emma and Mary H. made 166 sacks for the Christian Sunday School Christmas Tree. I fixed the Christmas Tree for Robert this eve.
Sun., Dec. 23.
A lovely a.m. and day. Up at 7:45 a.m. and had breakfast at 9 a.m. Emma and Robert went to Sunday School. Papa was here awhile this morning. I was at the Store awhile this a.m. Emma stayed for Church. We had dinner at 2 p.m. I wrote Dr. and Mrs. A. A. Wheeler a few lines, thanking Dr. Wheeler for the diary I received from him last eve. Emma, Mary H. and Robert and I took another stroll up on the foothills this afternoon and came home loaded with holly. We all attended the Friends Church this eve.
Mon., Dec. 24.
Christmas Eve. Another lovely, lovely day. And trade has just been immense, $451. I didn't get home until 12:30 a.m. I sent Papa his package up by Lewis tonight, also his and Mary's. We gave Lewis "The American Boy" and to Lem and Mary a pretty electric lamp for their new home's dining room. We gave Mary Haynie a box of nice hdkfs., a box of candy, and a "Whittier soup spoon."
Tue., Dec. 25.
Christmas Day. Myers Bros. was closed all day. Up at 7 a.m. We all washed and dressed and went in to see Robert's Christmas Tree. It certainly was pretty. Then we exchanged gifts all around. My what a lovely Christmas morning we all had and enjoyed! All of us were well remembered. See the list further on in this diary of what each of us received. We had breakfast at 9 a.m. Lewis was over for awhile this morning. We all spent today with Mary and Lem, also the Store force. Christmas Day Doings......I was at Store for a few minutes this morning. Then Emma and Mary H. came to the Store and they and Pierce and I all went up to spend the balance of the day with Lem and Mary. Pierce was over to our home early this a.m. and took a picture of Robert's Christmas Tree and also us on the porch. Misses Gallion and Rainbolt were with us at Lem's and we all had a big day and a big dinner. We all went up to see Lem's new home for awhile, and we all had our photos taken. Mary certainly had a good dinner. We also had a "draw game" late in the afternoon, of the gifts we would take, and remember the fun we had and what Miss Gallion drew (that Pierce planned for her to get). We departed for home at 6 p.m. Lewis came up and helped Robert fire his Christmas fireworks. Pierce was here this evening and we played Flinch and Old Maid to a finish! Retired at 10 p.m.
Wed., Dec. 26.
Up at 7:15 a.m. It was raining to beat the band! Breakfast at 8:30 a.m. And all day has remained gloomy. But, nevertheless, we sold $112. Mr. Ramsey took two pictures of the Store tonight. We were all in it. Emma, Mary H., and Robert went up to Mary's tonight. I walked home with Miss G. tonight and then went on up to Mary's, after Emma, Mary H. and Robert. Retired at 10:30 p.m.
Thurs., Dec. 27.
Today has sure been a rainy day, and all day of it, too. Trade was nice, considering the weather, $92. Lem was in Los Angeles this afternoon. Andrews worked on the hat dept. today and the girls worked on the laces and hamburgs. I am fixing a fancy crepe paper shoe window. Pierce and Miss Gallion and Rainbolt were here tonight and we played Flinch. Remember how wet Mr. Pierce and I got coming up to the house. Miss Rainbolt took supper with us and she and Miss Gallion spent the night with us.
Fri., Dec. 28.
Still it rained.....all night, and it was gloomy this morning. We had breakfast at 8:30 a.m. Today became partly cloudy, then very pretty. I finished a very pretty shoe window this eve. Trade fair today, $90. Lem and Mary moved to their new home this afternoon. I came home at 7 p.m. and we had supper, then I remained for the eve. Mary H., Emma, Robert and I played Flinch tonight, and Old Maid.
Sat., Dec. 29.
This has been a very pretty day. Trade, though, was somewhat quiet, $104. Miss Gallion was not with us today. She was at home, sick. I changed the dry goods window a little this a.m. I also fixed the outside case with ladies underwear. Lem was at home all day today, moving. We got in a small lot of goods today at noon. I got home tonight at 9:45 p.m. I got a nice letter from Retta this eve. Robert got one from Mrs. Shaw.
Sun., Dec. 30.
Lovely a.m., but cool. Robert and I buried a chicken this a.m., that passed away last night. We all took the 10:50 a.m. car to Long Beach. We got to Los Angeles at 11:35 a.m. and took the car there at 11:50 a.m. to Long Beach. Got there at 1 p.m. We had a nice dinner and then took in Long Beach and out on the pier. Mary H. enjoyed it very much indeed. We took the car home and got here at 6:30 p.m. We got supper and Emma and Mary went to Church while I remained at home with Robert. I made off a picture order, to have printed, of our Xmas photos of our group at L. A. 's on Christmas Day. I talked to Miss Gallion over the phone tonight, about the picture order. Today was a lovely day and we certainly enjoyed it ($3.15).
Mon., Dec. 31.
Last Day of 1906. This has sure been a rainy, gloomy, cold day. We got in a lot of underwear this a.m. I had some bills printed today, for the Christian Church. I made off a Sunday School report this afternoon. I gave Mr. Holly an order for a lot of photos this a.m., taken from our thanksgiving lot. It rained quite a good deal and hailed a little this afternoon. We all went to the Christian Church tonight for awhile, to a little entertainment. Came home at 10:30 p.m. It is real cold! This closes 1906.......May we do more in the New Year of 1907, for the good of the Master, than we have done in the year that closes tonight. May we be spared, and remain together, for many more years to come, and be able to raise our darling boy, Robert, to be a Christian man. That is my prayer. W. S. M.
