Wed., Sept. 6.
Heavy fog for a long time this a.m. Mrs. Trueblood was at home today. She is moving. It was her first time off. Emma and Cyrena went to the Beach today, with Geo., Lutie, and Mary. Trade was fine all day, $92. We got some work done on stock and underwear. Emma and them got home at 9:15 p.m. I got a nice long letter from Retta today.
Thurs., Sept. 7.
Today was real pretty and cool all day. Trade was very, very nice all day long. We, at last, finished all the underwear dept. and Mr. Reid commenced rolling our ginghams for us this eve. Lem was at Los Angeles again, all eve. I got a nice long letter from Willie Cresap this eve. Geo., Lutie, Will Andrews, Mary, Lem, Lewis, and Papa all dined with us tonight and we all played Flinch until 10:30 p.m.
Fri., Sept. 8.
Today has been another real pretty day. Trade fine, $89. Lem commenced working over our men's shoe dept. today. We got in quite a lot of new goods again this eve. Emma and Cyrena were out calling this eve, and also tonight after supper. Geo. and Lutie were at Los Angeles tonight.
Sat., Sept. 9.
Today has been another one of the lovely, pleasant, California days. Lem was up on the gallery all day, at work on the men's shoe dept. We got in a lot of St. Louis goods today. Trade was slow most all day, though at the last part of the eve it got real busy and we ran for the day - $151. Mary cracked a showcase glass last night and Robert broke the glass in back of show window tonight!!
Sun., Sept. 10.
Geo. and Lutie were at Mary's today. I mailed little Margaret three "Topsy's babies," also two photos of Mary's house last eve. I also mailed Miss Lou the two photos. I was up at 7 a.m. We all attended Sunday School and Emma and Cyrena stayed for their Church. I attended the "Free Methodist Church" this a.m. I wrote a letter to Retta this eve. Edgar Calhoun and his wife were down with the baby this eve. We were up to Lem and Mary's awhile this eve. We all attended the Congregational Church tonight for the first time.
Mon., Sept. 11.
Up at 5:30 a.m. I cleaned out the stable and burnt the trash. It was foggy for a long, long while this a.m. I made a Topsy hose-display in our side showcase today. Emma got a letter from Rena Reid and Mary Weir today. I bought lumber and wire for Emma's chicken yard today. Trade was nice today, $93. Geo. and Lutie left this eve, for home.
Tue., Sept. 12.
Up at 5:30 a.m. I went out to work on Emma's chicken pen. I fixed the frame for same, now ready for the wire. I put the wire on it at noon. I put the wire up in the stable tonight at supper. Lem finished the shoe dept. on the gallery this a.m. I started on the ladies shoes this eve. I started on our dry goods side today, rearranging things and papering shelves. We got in a big lot of draperies tonight.
Wed., Sept. 13.
Up at 5:30 a.m. I worked on Emma's chicken pen. Trade was nice today. Mrs. Trueblood took us all out on a big chicken bake tonight, on the River bed. There were 27 of us, two big wagon loads. We had a fine time....big supper.....lovely night. We got home at 11:30 p.m. Remember the big sand roll! Miss Gallion was home all eve today, sick.
Thurs., Sept. 14.
Up at 6 a.m. I worked a little on Emma's chicken pen. I worked quite a bit on my dry goods side today, pasting my shelving and rearranging. Lem and self took Mrs. Trueblood, Miss Gallion, and Emma up to Los Angeles tonight, to see the big opening of "The Broadway Store." Mr. Reid was at home all morning, sick.

Fri., Sept. 15.
Up at 5:30 a.m. and worked again on Mrs. Myers' chicken pen. I got it about through this eve. She will get her chickens on tomorrow. Trade was nice today, $79. We got in a lot of new goods. Cyrena went to bed this a.m. with a fever. We had Dr. Marshburn. Emma wrote to Dr. A. A. W. I got home tonight at 9 p.m.
Sat., Sept. 16.
Up at 6 a.m. At last I finished Emma's chicken pen and she got her chickens today. Trade was nice all day, $148. Lem was in Los Angeles all morning. We had a nice trade tonight, too. I got home at 10 p.m. Dr. Marshburn called to see Cyrena this a.m.
Sun., Sept. 17.
Up at 7 a.m. and I helped Emma with her work. Then I took a bath. We attended the Friends Church this a.m. We were at home all eve. Papa was here awhile after dinner. Lewis was here also. Cyrena sat up all day today. Emma and I walked down to the bakery this eve and got "hot buns" for supper. Robert got three eggs today....his first eggs.
Mon., Sept. 18.
Up at 6:15 a.m. I attended to all the morning's duties and went to the Store, as usual, at 8:30 a.m. Mr. Reid was in Los Angeles until 3 p.m. Lem and Lewis were in Los Angeles all morning. Trade was nice all day, $91. I got a little work down on my side today, worked on it until 9:45 p.m. I commenced giving Emma $1.00 per week, for her spending money today.
Tue., Sept. 19.
Another real bright pretty day. Trade very nice, $51. Lem left for San Francisco today at noon. I finished cleaning off the top of my shelving tonight and am now up to the dress goods dept. Mrs. Trueblood was back tonight and Mr. Reid was off again. I got home at 10 p.m. tonight.
Wed., Sept. 20.
Today trade has been fine, $69. I didn't quite yet get through with my dress goods dept. Cyrena was uptown this eve, first time for several days, as she has had a fever. Home tonight at 9:30 p.m. I mailed G. T. and Miss Lou a daily paper today.
Thurs., Sept. 21.
Cyrena is 22-years old today. We gave her a nice "hand-pocket." Mr. Reid notified us today, at noon, that he would quit us Saturday night. Trade today has been fine, $61. I finished my dry goods side today. I got home at 8:30 p.m., first time this early since I have been in Calif. I played Flinch with Mary, Mrs. J., Cyrena, and Emma awhile tonight.
Fri., Sept. 22.
This a.m. was almost like rain.....such a big joy! Mr. Reid washed all the windows and showcases today, brushed the hats in the case, and also cleaned upstairs and went through all the straw hats for me. Today was very quiet, though we did $51. I went through the hose dept. today. Mary got a letter from Lem at San Francisco this a.m.. It was cloudy and dark and we had a light shower at noon, the first of this fall.
Sat., Sept. 23.
Mr. Lawson Reid, who has been with us since we opened, quit us tonight. Today was a lovely day. Trade nice, $142. Lem got home from San Francisco tonight. Emma and "Nee" helped us out at the Store tonight. Home at 10:30 p.m.
Sun., Sept. 24.
Up at 7:45 a.m. Very warm today. A boy, 17-years old, drowned at the State School last eve, late. Emma and I attended preaching at her Church this a.m. Papa was here awhile after dinner. I wrote a letter to Retta this eve. Cyrena, Emma, and Robert and I took the 3 o'clock car to Los Angeles this afternoon and took in the show windows until Church time. We had fine cream. We took a car out to the 1st Presbyterian Church and heard Rev. Frank DeWitt Talmadge.....it was fine! Home at 10:45 p.m.
Mon., Sept. 25.
Today has been very, very warm. Trade, though, very nice all day. I finished labeling my caps and gloves and worked everything away. We have the Store in fine shape now. Mrs. Trueblood and Gallion cleaned away the "lace window" for me this a.m. I swept out tonight and got home at 9:20 p.m.
Tue., Sept. 26.
Up at 6 a.m. I did a little work at home and went to the Store at 6:30 a.m. I dusted and cleaned in general. Emma was not feeling very well. She had her teeth worked on this a.m. Today has sure been a warm one. I labeled all the hat boxes. We got out a lot of doll clothes ribbon today. Trade was fair. I washed the front windows this eve. Home at 9 p.m. I bought a grass catcher for the lawn mower and cut the upper part of our yard this eve.
Wed., Sept. 27.
Up at 5:30 a.m. I swept, dusted, fed the chickens and watered the flowers. I was at the Store at 6:20 a.m., cleaned some, and then had breakfast at 8:30 a.m. There was a big fog this morning. I put up some clothes hooks at home today. I made a blanket display at the Store this a.m., in one of our windows. Trade was very nice today. I cleaned out the other window for a shoe display. We got in a lot of nice shoes today, for ladies only. Trade was $71 today. Lem was in Los Angeles all eve.
Thurs., Sept. 28.
Another real cool morning. We had a little sprinkle this eve. I made a real pretty shoe and slipper display today in the front window and put hose in each shoe. It is a lovely window. We got in a lot of new goods tonight. I worked until 10 a.m. Cyrena, Emma, and Robert were at Mary's tonight, playing Flinch.
Fri., Sept. 29.
This was the coolest morning yet. I was up at 6 a.m. I washed the whole front of the Store and put up curtains over the front window. Mr. Ramsey took a photo of the Store tonight. Trade was nice today, $71. I made a belt display in our front showcase tonight. Got home at 10 p.m.
Sat., Sept. 30.
Up at 6 a.m. I did a little work at home and then got to the Store at 6:30. I ate breakfast at 8:45 a.m. We got in our new goods this a.m., from San Francisco. I was busy all day working on them. Trade was very nice, $117. We sold $2,200 for September. I got home tonight at 11:15. I got a nice long letter from Taylor Casebolt this eve. I got a hair cut this afternoon.
OCTOBER
Sun., Oct. 1.
Lovely, lovely day, but awful warm. I got up at 8 a.m. Have not felt at all well today, so have laid around all day. I spent the whole day at home. Lem, Mary and Lewis went to the beach today. Papa took supper and dinner with us today. I wrote Retta a letter this eve. I watered the lawn and flowers good this eve. I walked uptown tonight, after supper, with Cyrena, Emma and Robert and we all had ice cream.
Mon., Oct. 2.
Another real warm day. Mr. Pierce commenced working for us this morning. Trade has been real nice all day. I still haven't felt well today, but have put in a good days work. I have been marking goods all day.
Tue., Oct. 3.
I didn't get up quite as early this a.m., as I did not have to go to the Store. This has been another very, very warm day, through trade was fair. I did some decorating at the Store today. Cyrena made a blue silk-waist for herself today.
Wed., Oct. 4.
Very warm again. Trade only fair. I made signs this a.m...."The Store that Sells for Less," and "Something New Everyday." Then I hung them in the front part of the Store tonight. I also had a frame made for the counter today. I put part of it up tonight. Did more decorating in the Store today.
Thurs., Oct. 5.
Trade was very nice all day and it was not quite so hot today. I put up a frame and decorated it today, on our middle center counter. Lem was in Los Angeles all eve. Mary and Lewis went up tonight and they all attended a Show.
Fri., Oct. 6.
A real pretty day. Trade nice, $84. Lem fixed us a dress goods counter today. I finished decorating our Store today. I draped our balcony with red, white, and blue bunting. I fixed our dress goods counter tonight. Cyrena attended Miss Reese's Musical tonight. Robert is sick so Emma didn't get to go.
Sat., Oct. 7.
Mrs. Ramsey brought us a dozen of the Store photos last eve. They are fine. We got in come real pretty collars this a.m. Trade was fine all day and night, $138. Mrs. Trueblood was sick today, though she was at the Store for awhile this a.m. Emma and Cyrena helped us out tonight. The lights went out on us for a long while tonight.
Sun., Oct. 8.
Up at 6 a.m. and took a bath. Then I watered and cleaned up in general. I fed the chickens and had breakfast at 8:15. There was a heavy fog all day. We took a car at 10 a.m. for Los Angeles. Then we went out to Pasadena via the Ostrich Farm. We saw grand sights at both places. A very pleasant day. We saw and walked around the great "Green Hotel" in Pasadena. Remember the big German turn-out in Los Angeles this a.m. We got home at 8 p.m. Emma had a nice invitation from Mrs. R. H. Reynolds to spend next Thursday.
Mon., Oct. 9.
Another pretty and warm day. Trade nice, $94. I started fixing a "white window" of linen doilies, but did not get it finished. Emma, "Nee", and Robert were uptown tonight and we all got home at 8:30 p.m. I mailed a Store photo to Retta tonight.
Tue., Oct. 10.
A pretty day and a busy one also, $75. I finished a very pretty window of doilies and centerpieces today. I commenced on changing my shoe window to a larger shoe display. Emma and Cyrena attended the Rebecca's "Swap Social" tonight. I worked until 10 p.m. Six months ago today, at 2 o'clock, we left Miami for Whittier, Calif.
Wed., Oct. 11.
I finished a very pretty shoe window this morning. Trade was very fair today, $70. Lem was at Los Angeles all eve. I changed Lewis' candy case in light-blue puffing this eve, which was indeed a very pretty change when it was finished. Emma and Cyrena were at Prayer Meeting tonight.
Thurs., Oct. 12.
Foggy and cool this a.m. Emma and Cyrena spent today in Los Angeles, with Mrs. Reynolds, also Mary. We got in a lot of pants today. I had three big boxes hauled this eve, for Robert's "play Store." I got home tonight at 7:15 for supper and remained. Cyrena stayed in Los Angeles until Saturday.
Fri., Oct. 13.
Up at 5:30 a.m. I cut weeds and grass on the Well's side of yard and cleaned up part of the backyard. I worked on stock awhile today. Trade was nice all day. I commenced on a "play Store" for Robert today, at noon. Emma and I attended a Musical at the College tonight, my first in Whittier.
Sat., Oct. 14.
Up at 5:45 a.m. I cut weeds and mowed the yard on the Mound's side. Mrs. Mound gave me a strawberry plant this a.m. I set it out on the Well's side. It was a lovely day. Emma and Robert were in Los Angeles today, with "Nee," taking in the town. They got home at 6:45 p.m. Trade fine all day, $171.
Sun., Oct. 15.
Up at 6:30 a.m. I watered the lawn and flowers good. I also dusted the house for Emma. My back hurts a little today. Emma got little Robert a telephone-toy yesterday eve, up at Los Angeles.. Emma and Cyrena attended Church. I stayed at home....bathed and wrote. Papa dined with us today. We had our first fried chicken in California, 55-cents. We all took a walk down to the State School. Lem and Mary had Jerry [the horse] out. We heard the M. E. preacher tonight, the new one.
Mon., Oct. 16.
Today was cold an gloomy. Trade fair, $71. WE got in quite a lot of new goods this a.m. Cyrena got six letters today. Ben Reynolds was down to see us this eve, and he took supper with us. I was up this a.m. and worked on Robert's "Store" for him.

Tue., Oct. 17.
Up this a.m. early and put the top on Robert's "Store." Mr. Gallion put up a lot of signs for us today. I draped Robert's "Store" with bunting today at noon and it looks tony! I also put up several signs for him. Mr. Pierce was in Los Angeles this eve. We got our new counter top in tonight, that Papa made for us.
Wed., Oct. 18.
It was a lovely a.m., but real cold. Today trade has been fine, $80. Mrs. Trueblood attended a funeral today. I took a photo of Robert's "Store" today, at noon. I also took a photo of the chicken pen and the chickens. I worked up all the odd pants tonight on our new counter.

Another lovely day....cool. Lem was in Los Angeles all day. We all took supper at Mary's tonight. We had some good games of Flinch. In bed at 11 p.m. I mailed Margaret a school-bag today. We gave away about 100 school-bags today.
Fri., Oct. 20.
Lovely, but cool all day. Trade was nice, $91. I made a lace curtain and a portiere display in one window today. We got in a lot of new goods today. We gave away match-scratchers today. I got home at 8 p.m. Mr. and Mrs. Fry were here today.
Sat., Oct. 21.
Up at 6:30 a.m. It was a lovely morning, but cloudy this eve, and a good shower at 7 p.m. Trade was nice all day. Mary and Mr. Reid helped us out this eve....a $136 day. The shower this eve was the first since last April. Little Robert wore his gum-boots uptown tonight. I got home at 10 p.m.
Sun., Oct. 22.
Up at 7 a.m. It was cool, foggy and damp this morning. We had another light shower last night. I attended Church this a.m. at the Friend's Church. I wrote two letters at the Store this eve, one to Retta and one to Elbert. Emma, Cyrena, Robert and self all took a long walk down on South Bright and around down on South Greenleaf, around to the Girl's Reform School, and then back home at dusk. Mr. Wilse Hays died today at Miami and was buried this eve at Miami.
Mon., Oct. 23.
Up at 6:15 a.m. It was cold, but it has been a lovely day overall. Trade was nice all day, $102. Emma cleaned my coat for me today. I commenced wearing my stiff hat for everyday. About 25 men were working on our Street today, on new water pipes. I made a showcase of Colgate's goods that came in this a.m.
Tue., Oct. 24.
Today has been a lovely day. Trade fair. We were busy all day changing things around at the Store. I fixed up a few things for Cyrena to take back to Margaret, Angie, Miss Emma Parsons, Miss Lou, Lizzie [Cunningham], and Retta. I worked on the tie case tonight. Home at 10 p.m.
Wed., Oct. 25.
A lovely, lovely morning. Up at 6 a.m. I went to Los Angeles and Long Beach today with Emma and Cyrena. We spent the morning and then took lunch in Los Angeles. Spent the afternoon in Long Beach. I got Cyrena her berth ticket today. We got Mary Haynie a pretty shell, and for Margaret and Geo. Jack we got a cute little horse. We got a bubble-blower for Pauline, and for Robert, a jack-o-lantern, peanuts and bananas. We got home at 8 p.m.
Thurs., Oct. 26.
A lovely, cool day. Trade was nice, $76. I worked on stock some. Emma got a letter today from Mrs. Dr. Hughes, telling us of Mr. Wilse Hays' death last Sun. She also got a letter from Mary Haynie. Cyrena and Emma called on Mrs. Trueblood tonight, then home at 8:30 p.m. Mr. Fry bought the Mills Building today.
Fri., Oct. 27.
Lovely this a.m., but cool. Lem was in Los Angeles all morning and eve. I made a crepe paper window at the Store today....very, very pretty! Mr. and Mrs. Trueblood, Mary, Mrs. Johnston, and Mr. Reid were here tonight and played Flinch. We had a fine time and some close games. Bananas and grapes for refreshment. I got home at 8:30 p.m. Trade was fair today, $50.
Sat., Oct. 28.
The new "Golden Rule Store" opens this a.m. Today has been another one of those lovely California days. Trade was quiet all a.m., but fine all eve and night. It ran $127, before we closed. Our new water is now running in fine shape. We got home from the Store at 10:30 p.m. It was very, very cool tonight. Emma cleaned out the chicken pen today.
Sun., Oct. 29.
Up at 6:30 a.m. It was foggy and real cool. We all attended Sunday School. Emma and Cyrena remained for their preaching and Robert and I attended the Methodist "old folks service." We ate dinner at 1 o'clock, then we strolled down to the State School and attended its evening service. Then back home at 5:30 p.m. I packed "Nee's" trunk for her tonight, also the packages and walnuts we are sending back by her. We all went to the M. E. Church preaching tonight.
Mon., Oct. 30.
Up at 6:30 a.m. At Store at 8:30 a.m. We have been busy all day long, all we could handle all day, $128. Today was a little better than Saturday. The sun came out at 10 a.m. and it was quite pretty the rest of the day. Emma and Cyrena had callers all eve. They were at the Store tonight and came home with me at 10 p.m.
Tue., Oct. 31.
Halloween Night! Little Robert had his fake face and jack-o-lantern tonight. Trade today was very, very nice. I made a hat and cap display in one window. Cyrena left for Miami this eve. Emma, Robert and I went up to Los Angeles this eve and saw Cyrena off on her train. We got home at 7:45 p.m. We went up to the M. E. Church tonight, to a "witch party."
NOVEMBER
Wed., Nov. 1.
Up at 6:30 a.m. Trade today was fine, $65. I changed the shoe window today and made it shoes and ties. Lem and Mary were in Los Angeles today. Mary left an order for a suit. I helped Emma at noon. Papa took dinner and supper with us.
Thurs., Nov. 2.
I straightened out all the ladies shoes this a.m. Lem was in Los Angeles again, all eve. Trade was nice all day, $82. Emma and Robert were up tonight. I worked on the men's and boy's pants tonight, so I did not get home until 9:45 p.m. I took out an accident policy this eve, $3 per year.
Fri., Nov. 3.
I cleaned up our wood house at home and made room for some more boxes. I cleaned up good behind the Store this a.m. and had a load, each, of boxes hauled to Lem and me. Mr. Pierce was in Los Angeles this eve. Lyt was down and dined with Lem today. We got a postal from "Nee" today, at San Jose, Calif. Emma helped her Church Supper tonight. We all ate there. I ate my first tamale tonight.
Sat., Nov. 4.
It sprinkled some today, at noon. Trade was fine all day long. We had a $228 day, $695 week. This was the best Saturday, and the next-best week (not including "special sales"). Emma and Mary went to a "Flower Show" tonight in Los Angeles. They got home at 11 p.m.
Sun., Nov. 5.
Up at 7 a.m. Dark and gloomy out. Also windy. We had a big rain this a.m., and again at noon and tonight. We all attended Sunday School. Emma stayed for church. She also went back to Church to practice this eve. I wrote to Retta this eve and enclosed photos of the chicken pen and Robert's "Store." The lights went out tonight. We all stayed at home and ate supper by fire in the kitchen.
Mon., Nov. 6.
Up at 6:30 a.m. It was cold, damp, cloudy, and we had several rain showers today. Trade was nice, though. I bought our first wood today in Whittier, 1/2 rick = $1.25 (1/6 cord). I came home at 7 p.m. and remained. We had fresh oysters for supper. It was not quite so cold tonight.
Tue., Nov. 7.
It rained most all day long, 1.46". Trade nice all day, $90. Four carloads of W. C. T. U. people were here today. It was a big time with the ladies in Whittier today, even though it has been a rainy, gloomy day. Lem was at Los Angeles today. I got nice letters from Newt and Retta today. Home tonight at 6:45 p.m.
Wed., Nov. 8.
It is still cloudy and cool and still some little rain. I worked upstairs awhile this a.m., on the balcony, in shirts, making room for underwear. Trade got busy and kept up all day......all we could handle. We ran $160. We got in new goods again today. Emma was at Mary's all eve. She attended a lecture tonight at the Friend's Church. I got home tonight at 10 p.m.
Thurs., Nov. 9.
Today has been quite pretty. Trade nice, $112. I worked upstairs on the underwear dept. this a.m. Emma was up awhile this eve. She attended choir practice at her Church tonight. She wrote to Kate this eve. She bought a Bible Book for Robert this eve, from Mrs. Saunders.
Fri., Nov. 10.
Lovely day all day and trade was nice. We got in a big lot of goods from St. Louis. Lem and I worked tonight until 11 p.m. putting in a glass in the front showcase.
Sat., Nov. 11.
I woke up with a sick headache. I came home at noon, for awhile. I felt better after dinner and worked all eve. I have been as busy as busy could be, $162. That made $733 for the week, and very near $1,500 for the past two weeks. Home at 11:15 p.m. and I don't feel good.
Sun., Nov. 12.
Up at 7 a.m., and still not feeling well. Emma and Robert attended Sunday School, then I attended Church with them. The Christian Church dedicated today. Emma gave $5.00 and Robert gave $1.00. Papa dined with us. We attended Evening Service and I ushered for them this eve. Emma took Robert up to Hall this eve, for lunch. Robert stayed with Guy Wells this eve and tonight. Emma and I attended Church tonight again. In bed at 10 p.m.
Mon., Nov. 13.
Lovely, lovely day through very warm. Trade was nice today. Papa dined with us again today. Emma got a nice letter today from Nora and Willie Cresap. Remember Emma and "Booker" at her Church tonight! Mary was at Long Beach today. The Christian Church commenced a Meeting tonight.
Tue., Nov. 14.
Lem was in Los Angeles today. It was very, very warm today. I made a dress-goods display in one window today. Mr. Pierce worked on the shirt, collar and hose dept. today. Emma attended her Church tonight.
Wed., Nov. 15.
Today was somewhat gloomy, though trade was real good, $100.60. Mary, Emma, Robert and I went uptown this eve. I got Emma a real pretty blue unfinished worsted suit at the New York Cloak and Suit House, $19.50. We got home at 7:45 p.m. Mary and Emma attended Church.
Thurs., Nov. 16.
It rained almost all night last night, and most all day, too. Lem was 40-years old today. We all took dinner at Mary's today. Robert game "Uncle Lem" a small box of Gen. Arthur's cigars. Mary had a good dinner. I took a photo of Robert and Caroline and Bob this eve. Lyt was also there for dinner. Trade was $73 today. We got in lots of new goods today.
Fri., Nov. 17.
Very, very pretty, but cool. Lem was in Los Angeles today. Trade fair. Emma bought a nice blue hat to go with her new suit. Lem brought Emma's new suit home from Los Angeles tonight. I got home at 9 p.m. Robert was not well tonight so Emma stayed home from Church.
Sat., Nov. 18.
Lovely all day. Trade was fine all day and night, $174.......$618 week, $1,834 so far this month.....so far our best record. Mr. Pierce was sick and went home early, so I straightened up and swept out and got home at 12 o'clock sharp.
Sun., Nov. 19.
Up at 7 a.m. Another lovely day. We attended Sunday School and Church. I wrote letters to G. T. Taylor and Retta. Emma went to Church this afternoon. We took a walk up to look at the cottages on Hadley and Bright. I attended Emma's Church tonight again. There was a big crowd out. One of Emma's hens died last night.
Mon., Nov. 20.
It was real cool and windy today. Trade has been fine, though, $101.57. Rev. Thornton and his family spent today with Mary. Papa dined with us. Robert and I buried the chicken today. We got in a lot of St. Louis goods today. I commenced overhauling the slippers and children's shoes dept. today. Papa got his overcoat from home this eve.
Tue., Nov. 21.
Up at 6:30 a.m. I cut some grass for the chickens. It was the coldest morning yet, and it stayed cool all day. Lem tried an oil stove for the Store, but it was no good. I worked on the ladies and children's slippers dept. all day. Emma was up and helped us this eve. Miss Gallion was at home, sick, all eve. Trade was fine, $127. We had strawberries for supper! Mary was at Los Angeles this eve. Mr. Reid got us four tickets today to see "Ben Hur" on the 30th.
Wed., Nov. 22.
Up at 6:30 a.m. I cleaned out the chicken lot and pet. It was not quite so cold today. Trade was nice all day, $109. I worked on the children's shoes this a.m. Miss Gallion is still at home sick. We had all we could handle this eve, and awhile tonight. Mrs. Reid gave little Robert a real pretty little white rooster tonight. I cut the balance of grass on lawn today, at noon.
Thurs., Nov. 23.
I worked Emma's front flower bed over for her this a.m. Miss Gallion was still at home, sick. I finished the shoes today. I also worked on my flannel dept. tonight and worked away all the spool cotton that came in. Trade fair today, but not rushing, $79. Emma cleaned the two front rooms at the house today. Then Emma helped us at the Store this eve.
Fri., Nov. 24.
Up this a.m. and worked Emma's side flower bed all over. Lem was in Los Angeles all day. Miss Gallion still at home, sick. I cleaned up around the desk today. I got lumber for an oil cloth rack, but didn't get it up. Robert took down all the drapery on the middle counter for me tonight. I put up a lot of nice new flannelettes on it tonight.
Sat., Nov. 25.
Up, as usual, at 6:30 a.m. I helped Emma some and then got to the Store at 8:30 a.m. I finished my center table of bargains: flannelettes, ginghams, shirtings, calicos, and scrims. Trade was fine all day. Miss Gallion is still at home. Emma helped us this eve and tonight. We ran $182.88 for today, $680.51 for the week, and so far this month (3-days to come) $2,518. We got in more new goods this eve. Emma, Robert, and I ate supper at Pacific tonight. Home at 11:45 p.m.
Sun., Nov. 26.
Gloomy and cool. Up at 7 a.m., with a sick headache. I did my regular work, then took a bath and laid down for awhile. I ate some breakfast at 8:30 a.m. Emma and Robert went to Sunday School, but I stayed at home. I wrote to Jobe Hanna and Uncle John Whitmore. Emma stayed for Church. Papa was here awhile after dinner. Emma, Robert and I went up to see Miss Gallion for awhile this eve, then took the car to Los Angeles at 5:45 p.m., to hear Frank Talmadge. Remember Robert's coat in Church! Remember the rain coming home tonight!
Mon., Nov. 27.
It rained most of the night and more today. Trade was fine, though, $143. Miss Gallion is still very, very sick. Papa got his new suit today. I made a change in the front counter tonight. Emma helped me. We got a foot-mat tonight, and a foot scraper. Lem bought a horse and wagon and harness today, $165.
Tue., Nov. 28.
Today has been very pretty, but cool. Miss Gallion is very, very low. Trade today was fine, $114. Lem and Los Angeles this eve, so Emma helped us out. I made a pillow and ribbon window this eve, and tonight. Lem got Miss Gallion some violets this eve, at Los Angeles. I got home tonight at 10 p.m.
Wed., Nov. 29.
Today has been very pretty. Miss Gallion is much better this a.m. Trade was nice all day. Emma and Mary helped us this eve.....$209 today.....$3,000 for this month, our largest month. I got home tonight at 10:30 p.m. We had a slight shower tonight.
Thurs., Nov. 30.
Lovely a.m. Up at 7:15. One year ago today we all dined with Retta. Today, we will go to the Greenleaf Hotel for our turkey dinner. Ha!... Ha! Always remember our first Thanksgiving-day Dinner in Whittier, Calif. Robert stayed all night with Mrs. Reid tonight. Emma, Mary, and I went up to Los Angeles and took in the city and heard "Ben Hur" at the Mason Opera House, 129 Broadway. We met J. D. Fristoe, who also went with us. We had a fine turkey dinner tonight in Los Angeles.
DECEMBER
Fri., Dec. 1.
Little Robert woke us up this a.m., coming home from Mrs. Reid's. Bless his little heart....the first time away from us in California at night. We got him two large goldfish. Today was a perfect day. Trade was fine, a little over $100. Emma helped us this eve and tonight. Mary was at Long Beach today. Papa took dinner with us today and supper tonight. Emma decorated the dining room with holly today.
Sat., Dec. 2.
A lovely morning, and a lovely day. Trade was all we could handle all day, $224. Emma helped us all afternoon and tonight. I got home tonight at 11:15 p.m. Papa got his Church letter from home today. Mary was at the Baptist Picnic all day. Papa dined with us today.
Sun., Dec. 3.
Up at 7:20 a.m. It was lovely and warm We all attended Sunday School and Church. Papa was here awhile after dinner. Emma was at Church all eve, to practice. I wrote a letter to Rettie this eve. We had ice cream tonight at the Ice Cream Parlor. We all attended Rally Day Exercises at Emma's Church tonight. Robert gave $1.00.
Mon., Dec. 4.
Pleasant day. Trade was all we could handle, about $115. Mr. Walter's, the "Pacific Restaurant" man, died over our Store this eve. We were as busy as busy could be all day. Emma and Mary looked at an "Armstrong " piano this eve. I got a nice letter from Retta this eve. Home from the Store at 10 p.m.
Tue., Dec. 5.
Lovely day. Trade was nice all day, $111. Lem was in Los Angeles all eve. Emma and Mary helped us out today. I got a little work down on the children's underwear today. Home at 10 p.m. The little "Berry" girl, across the street, died last night at 8 p.m.
Wed., Dec. 6.
Another lovely, lovely day. Trade not so very rushing, $84. I got the children's underwear all okay and one-half of the ladies dept. up to date. Emma and Robert were uptown this eve and Emma got Robert a little overcoat and cap. I got supper at Mary's tonight. Emma also got Robert a cute toy.
Thurs., Dec. 7.
Pretty day, but cool. Trade, $75. I got some work done on stock. I got in quite a lot of new goods today. Emma helped me tonight. She and Mary attended the Bazaar this eve and bought several little things. I got home tonight at 10 p.m.
Fri., Dec. 8.
Pleasant....a pretty day. Trade fine, $100.52. Mary and Emma, also Lewis, spent today up in Los Angeles. Robert and I took dinner at the Pacific Restaurant today. I worked tonight until 9:30 p.m. I put on all new lights tonight at home.
Sat., Dec. 9.
A very peculiar day, smoky and cloudy, dismal all day, wind blowing most all day...a very good gale. In spite of it, though, trade was very nice. Emma and Mary helped us out this eve and also tonight. Trade ran $166. We got home at 10:45 p.m. Emma has a dreadful cold.
Sun., Dec. 10.
It was very, very pretty this a.m. Emma had such a cold she remained at home. Robert and I attended Sunday School. Papa dined with us. Dr. Deal and his brother were here this eve. We had ice cream and strawberries tonight for supper. I wrote letters to Mrs. C. G. Vaughan and Retta this eve. Lem and Mary were here this eve for awhile.
Mon., Dec. 11.
Trade has been nice all day long, $104. I changed the line of displays on both sides of the Store today. I worked tonight until 10:30 p.m. We are having 1500 fence signs printed by Rev. Pitt. Emma helped us at the Store all eve. Miss Gallion was down to the Store for awhile this a.m., visiting.
Tue., Dec. 12.
Another pretty, nice, warm day. Trade fine, $104. Lem was in Los Angeles all day. Emma and Mary helped us again this afternoon. I finished my display on the line of the dry goods side today and cleaned off the center table tonight. Home at 10:15 p.m. We bought a few Christmas things today.
Wed., Dec. 13.
Another pretty day....very, very warm. Trade was nice all day long, $103. Emma and Mary helped us all eve. Emma fixed and cleaned our ribbon case for us tonight. I cleaned out our show windows, ready for new displays tomorrow. Robert buried another one of his goldfish today.....and the white one is sick tonight. I got home at 10:45 p.m.
Thurs., Dec. 14.
A lovely day. Trade was $114 today. We got in a lot of new goods today. Mary at Los Angeles today. Emma helped us at the Store. I made a very pretty Christmas window tonight. I got home at 10:30 p.m. Lyt and Papa dined with us today.
Fri., Dec. 15.
Lovely, lovely day, though the dust was a little bad. Trade was nice all day, $112. I made a pretty "doll window" tonight. We are offering some of the dolls as "free gifts." Emma and Mary helped us all eve and tonight. Home at 11 p.m. Robert pasted the Myers Bros. name on all our tops and whirl-a-gigs. A photo of Blanche and baby "Alice" Wheeler came today.
Sat., Dec. 16.
Today has been one ideal day and trade has been just fine all day. We have given away a few dolls and tops today and have sold over $225. I didn't get home until 11:30 p.m. Em and Mary and Mr. Reid helped us this eve and tonight. I have two very pretty Christmas windows now and they both have attracted quite a lot of attention. We have sold very near $800 this week.
Sun., Dec. 17.
A lovely, lovely day. Emma and Robert attended Sunday School and I went to the Store. After Sunday School Emma and I fixed up all of our Christmas presents to send away in the morning. We had dinner at 2 p.m. Robert was out riding awhile with Lelia and Mr. Mounds. I wrote Retta a few lines today. We were at home all eve, resting. We had fine ice cream and strawberries for supper. I stayed home tonight.....did not attend worship today at all.
Mon., Dec. 18.
Lovely day. Trade was rushing all day, $185. Emma helped us awhile this a.m. and again this eve and night. We got $1.50-worth of wood today. Our previous $1.25 worth, of Nov. 6, lasted us 6-weeks, lacking two days. Remember Mrs. Trueblood's trouble with L. A. M. tonight! Mrs. Reid gave Robert some red vermillion for the chickens.
Tue. Dec. 19.
Lovely day. Lem went to Los Angeles for half the day. We got so rushed at the Store that we had to call in Emma and Mary to help out, $185 day. I didn't get home until 11 p.m. I mailed all of our Christmas packages this eve. Robert played with Lelia all day. Emma found a dime on Greenleaf St. today, at noon. It rained a little tonight. I bough Robert a few things for Christmas.
Wed., Dec. 20.
Mixed sun, clouds, and rain today. Trade was fair all day, $127. Mary helped us awhile this eve, also Miss Gallion. I mailed Miss Lou a package this eve, for Aunt Mandy. I got home at 10:30 p.m. Very cool out tonight.
Thurs., Dec. 21.
We had a little frost last night, first since we have been in California. I was up at Los Angeles awhile this a.m., and did a little shopping. Lem was out gathering holly this a.m. Emma and Mary helped us all eve and Emma helped again tonight. I got home tonight at 11 p.m. Trade=$197.
Fri., Dec. 22.
Lovely day, but somewhat cool. Trade was fine all day long. We had Mary, Emma, and Miss Gallion to help us all eve, and Emma and Mary tonight. We had a $263.61 day. I didn't get home until 11 p.m. We had a hard windstorm last night.
Sat., Dec. 23.
It was 34-degrees this a.m., and a little ice outdoors. But it was a lovely, lovely day. Well......today has sure been a busy day with us all day long. This has been our biggest week, $1,361, and the largest month so far, $3,100. We had our largest day today, $363.61. We had all that eight of us could handle all day long and tonight. I got home at midnight. Myers Bros. fed the crowd at "Pacific" tonight.
Sun., Dec. 24.
Lovely, lovely Christmas-Eve Day. I got up at 7:30 a.m., and had breakfast at 9 a.m. I was then at the Store most all day, working on bundles. Papa dined with us today. We had strawberries and cake for dinner. I was at home all eve except late. Emma, Robert and I walked up to the Store and around town a little. We attended Church at the Christian Church. Robert gave his Sunday School teacher, Miss Knight, a Christmas package tonight. Robert hung two stockings tonight.
Mon., Dec. 25.
Up at 6:20 a.m. I made a fire for Robert, Emma and I, and we went in with him to see the little Christmas tree he had fixed up himself. It was loaded with all kinds of good things to eat, and toys. Emma and Robert gave me a lovely overcoat and a lounging robe. I gave Emma a nice handbag, handkerchiefs, a box of candy, and $10 in gold. I gave Robert a box of nice candy and 25-cents in cash, and Emma and I, together, gave him a nice book of Bible stories. Robert gave mother a nice box of paper and California photo-sealers. We also got several packages through the mail today. Our gas went out this morning, so we had breakfast at the restaurant. We all spent today with Lyt and Sunnie and family, and had a fine dinner. Lem, Mary and Lewis were down tonight. See Robert's list of Christmas things elsewhere in this book.
Tue., Dec. 26.
Today was real pretty. Trade was rushing all day, $75. Emma cleaned house today and she and Robert went up to Mary's for awhile tonight. I went up after her as I came home. I have a very sore finger. I exchanged my overcoat this eve, that Emma gave me, for a shorter one.
Wed., Dec. 27.
Very, very warm. Trade was nice all day, $64. I fixed both of my windows today. In the one toward "Mill's" I made a notion window. In the other one I made a fleeceback flannel window, all 10-cents. Emma helped me tonight for awhile on the windows. I have a very, very bad cold and my back hurts me some tonight. I went home at 8:30 p.m. Emma got a Christmas package from Aunt Mag (or May?) today.
Thurs., Dec. 28.
Another real pretty day. Trade was very, very nice all day. Lyt was down and took dinner with Lem today and they took a drive down in the country. I brought the table down from the Store that Papa gave Emma for Christmas. I had Papa's gas stove put in this eve.
Fri., Dec. 29.
Lovely day. Trade nice, $75. Lem was in Los Angeles part of the day. I got a little work done on stock. I straightened out the ladies handkerchief dept. tonight. Got home at 8:20 p.m. Emma was out calling all eve. Emma and Robert were home tonight. Robert got some "sleigh bells" from Jesse Stier Cunningham this eve. I put up a bank of sash-curtains this a.m.
Sat., Dec. 30.
Lovely, lovely day. We got in quite a lot of new goods. Trade was very, very nice all day, $152. This month is the largest so far in California, $3,540. We had over 5,000 customers. Last Saturday was our largest day, $363, and we had over $1,300 for the whole of last week. I got home tonight at 10:30 p.m. Robert got reigns, as well as bells, from Jesse Stier this eve. Emma helped us out awhile today.
Sun., Dec. 31.
Lovely a.m. Up at 7:15 a.m. Papa came down for awhile this a.m. Emma and little Robert went to Sunday School. Then Emma stayed for Church. Robert wore his new shirt and collar for his first time that his auntie sent him for Christmas. I wrote an 8-page letter to Retta this a.m. Emma, Robert and I took a walk up to Lem's and Mary's for awhile this eve, then on up to North Greenleaf and back down to Store. I got a letter from Ret this eve. Came home and had fried oysters for supper, and ice-cream, bananas and chocolate cake. Remained at home tonight and read to Robert for a long while.
