FARRILL, JAMES DANVERS

James Danvers Farrill was born on the Isle of Man, in 1805; and died 1871, age 66. His father was R. Farrill, who came to the Isle of Man from France, with means. He invested in different lines of business at a loss. His wife who was a lady of education, after her husband's death, taught private school, and raised her family, successfully.

The late James Danvers Farrill was raised in White Haven, Cumberland Co., England and went, in 1837, to Mount Morris, Livingston Co.. New York, with his brother, Rev. Alex. Farrill. The latter remained in the United States, and later another brother, Frank Farrill, came to New Haven, Connecticut, where he died. James Danvers Farrill came to Canada in 1841, and settled in Arthur Tp. on the farm of 200 acres, lot 28, E.O.S. road.

At that time it was all bush and there were no roads, simply blazed paths. He returned to the United States twice to earn money with which to keep things going in Canada. He was a well educated and well informed man; never held or sought office.

He was a class leader for years, and active in the affairs of the Methodist church. In politics he was a Liberal. He married Catharine Lewthwaite, born 1807, Isle of Man, and died in 1901 at the of age 94. Issue: Anthony J. born in Liverpool, 1836; Louisa, born in New York (died young) Jane, born in Canada (died young) ; George A., and Frank, 1851, died 1894.

� Anthony J. went to Pittsburg in 1859. He has been very successful, and has now retired.

George A., born in Arthur, 1846, owns 144 acres, divs. 3 and 4, lot 23, E.O.S. road, where he carries on mixed farming. He has been Councillor of the township for three years, and is Magistrate. He has been class leader, assistant superintendent and teacher in the Sabbath School in the Methodist church, and in politics he is a Liberal. He married Margaret McHardy, of Nichol Tp. Issue: Fred G., B.A. Victoria College of the University of Toronto; Ida L., Norman A., Edwin B. (d.); Margaret J. (d.); Evelyn M. and Mildred A.
