GARBUTT, JOHN

John Garbutt was born in Yorkshire, England in 1806 and died in 1891 at the age of 95.

He came to Canada in 1830, settling first in Tecumseh, and moving from Whitechurch, York Co., to Peel, in 1846, when the country was a wilderness.

Mr. Garbutt brought very little money with him to Canada, and made his way alone. He cleared his farm and accumulated at one time 400 acres. He was of a retiring disposition, and never sought or held office in the township. He was a class leader for years in the Methodist church, and in political views was a Liberal.

He married Mary Cosford, who died in 1892 aged 76. Issue: John G., married Annie Petch, setttled in California; Richard, married Libbie Messenger, settled in Michigan; James, married Miss Keobel, settled U. S.; Joseph, settled in U. S.; Edward C., Mrs. Wm. Whaley , act. in Simcoe Co.; Mrs. Samuel Robertson, in Harriston; Marv, in Harriston.

� Edward C., was born in 1849, succeeded his father on the homestead of 100 acres, lot 1, con. 5, where he carries on mixed farming and feeds cattle for market.

He is a strong vigorous man, up-to-date in every respect; a class leader in the Methodist church, and for some years a School Trustee. He is Chief Ranger in the Canadian Order of Foresters, and in political views a Liberal. He married Margaret J. Simpson, of Maryborough. Issue: Robert S., Mary G., William E., Margaret E., and Annie E.

The crown patent for the west half of Lot 1, Concession 5, Peel Township, Wellington County, Ontario was registered to John Garbutt in 1863. Title to this property passed to John Garbutt's son, Edward Garbutt, in 1878. Edward was born in 1849. He conducted mixed farming and fed cattle for market. Edward married Margaret J. Simpson of Maryborough Township. Edward and Margaret had five children.
