HELLYAR, JOHN

John Hellyar was b. in Cornwall, Eng., in 1822, and d. in 1889, age 67. He was a stone cutter and mason by trade and came to Canada about 1850. He worked at his trade about Bowmanville for about seven years, and came to Maryborough and purchased 100 acres, west half of lot 7, con 14, from Mr. Matchett, and later added to it by purchasing 40 acres, east half of lot 7, con. 14, from William Wells.

About twenty-five acres were cleared on this farm when he came, and he carried on mixed farming, and lived upon the place until his death. He was a Methodist, and a Reformer. He m. Elizabeth Prestcott, of Devonshire Eng. Issue: Mrs. James Barber, Minto; Susannah (d. 17); Mrs. Geo. Gill, West Luther; Rev. John, Methodist minister at Foxwarren Man.; and Frank.

Frank was b. and has always lived on the homestead which he now owns. He carries on mixed farming, and has one of the best improved farms in the township. He has been for two years a Director of the Rothsay Cheese Co. , and is a Methodist and a Reformer. He m. Annie, dau. of William Philp.
