HOUGH, HENRY


Dr. Henry Hough, a native of Guelph, and a venerable and much respected figure in early Ontario journalism, died in Toronto on February 25, 1917.

Mr. Hough who was in his eightieth year, was born in 1837, and after a good schooling entered the office of the Guelph Mercury, and helped to set the type of the first issue of this paper in 1854. He was the last of the first "graduates" of this paper.

He entered Victoria University in 1858, graduating with the dregree of B.A. and afterwards M.A.. Later he received his doctor's degree from the same College.

In 1864, Dr. Hough established the Cobourg World, which he conducted for 21 years. In 1885 he removed to Toronto, acting first for five years as manager of a department of Grip. Then he purchased a lithographing business, which he conducted until his retirement.

Dr. Hough was much interested in church and welfare work, and was connected with the Deaconess Home and the Fred Victor Mission for many years.

He was a member of the University of Toronto Senate for six years, of the Victoria College Senate for between thirty and forty years, and of the Board of Regents for about twenty years.
