McLACHLAN, JOHN

John McLachlan was b. near Stirling, Scot., d. about 1826 age 35. He was a farmer�s son, and a silk weaver in Paisley, but later kept a draper�s shop in Stirling. He came to Canada in 1821 and set. about one mile from Carleton Place. He was a Presbyterian and a Reformer. He m. Ann Houston in Scot. Issue: John (d.) , Maryborough; Alexander, Caledon; William (d), Caledon; Janet (d.) , in Scotland and Mrs. Finlay Hayes, d. in U.S.; Mrs. Adam Conboy, Erin, and James d. Maryborough b. in Canada.

James, b. Carleton Place, d. 1898, age 72. He was a carpenter by trade, and when he came to Maryborough, and purchased 100 acres on east half lot 12, con. 15, there was not a tree cut on it. He built a great many of the houses and barns of the district, and his own first house is still standing on the place. He was a Trustee of S.S. No. 14, for some years, and was active in the Methodist church , being a Trustee of the old Derryadd Church, also of the present church of Rothsay. In politics he was a Reformer. He was a very active man as is evidenced by his working his farm himself until 72 year of age. He m. Sarah J. Ballantyne of Arthur whose mother, a Cole was a pioneer of that township. Issue: William H., Cargill; Rev. James, Methodist minister, Hanover; Mrs. W. H. Gillrie, Arthur; Mrs. James Anderson, Brandon; Mrs. Wm. Rinn, Britton, Mich.; John A. Glencoe; Ballantyne, (d. 20); Mrs. Susan Gillrie, Maryborough; Albert (d. 24); Dr. Arthur L. Carmen, Man; Mrs. J. E. Oxby, Maryborough; and Maud, school teacher, Arthur. Mrs. McLachlan is living at the age of 72 in Arthur Village.
