OXBY, WILLIAM

Luke Oxby b. 1800 Lincolnshire, England, d. 1880. He m. Bridget Day in Eng., and in 1829-30, immediately after their marriage, they came to Canada, settling in Elizabethtown Tp., where he farmed for the remainder of his life. He was a member of the Presbyterian church, and a Conservative. Issue: Mrs. James Aspinall, William, John, in Elizabethtown Tp.; Thomas (d.); Mrs. Robt. Hibbard, Cobourg.

William was b. in Elizabethtown Tp., Leed Co., Ont., in 1834, and d. in 1898, age 64. He came to Maryborough about 1853, and worked for Henry Walker, Nixon Walker, and Robert Gilrie.

About 1858 he purchased 100 acres, the east half, lot 12, con. 14, from William Brawley, and finished clearing it. He never would hold municipal office or trusteeship, but was a School Auditor. He took an active interest in the affairs of the Methodist church. He was Trustee of the Rothsay Church during the time he lived in Maryborough, also of the old Derryadd Church, and for nearly 20 years he was Recordin Steward of the Moorefield circuit, for 17 years never missing a quarterly meeting. In politics he was a Reformer. In 1856, he m. Charlotte Green. Issue: William Ezra, Nebraska; Mrs. William Mitchell, Maryborough; Luke, Peel; Mrs. Wm. Walker, Maryborough; J. Egerton, Mrs. Walter Wallace, Man.; Mrs. Richard Henderson, Drayton, and Frederick, Man. The late Wm. Oxby started in life without means, and by his own exertions and good management, raised and educated his family and gave them a start in life, leaving at his death a fine property.

James, Egerton, was b. and raised on the farm which he worked for 8 years, before purchasing it in 1902. His father had added to the farm, by the purchase of 50 acres, the north quarter of lot 12, which is still part of it. He carries on mixed farming, and keeps first-class horses, owning a share in a syndicate Percheron horse. He is a Methodist, and a Reformer, and is active in the affairs of the party, having been on the committee at times. He m. Mary McLachlan. Issue: Ralph W., and Ruth W.
