On 5 Oct 1327 the keeper of the port of Dover was ordered topermit him and his wife to cross with their household, horses, &c., theybeing on a pilgrimage. On 12 October 1334 he had licence to alienate inmortmain to the priory of Austin Friars, London, a messuage and garden toenlarge their dwellingplace. In 1337 he appears as holding for life thetown of Henley and the manor of Swerford, co. Oxford, and the manor ofBeckley, held for life, was to remain to him and his heirs to be held inchief. On 17 May 1341 he had licence to alienate in mortmain to the Deanand Chapter of St. Mary's, Salisbury, a mill and 30 acres of land with£10 rent in Knight's-Enham, Hants, and the advowson of the Church toprovide 4 vicars to celebrate divine service daily for his good estate inlife, for his soul after death, for the souls of his wife Maud and ofThomas Burnell (o), their son, and for all the souls of their ancestors,of Edward II and of Hugh le Despenser, the elder, and cause vicars todistribute to the poor 20s. 10d. On 1 May 1346 he was paying 160 marks byway of gift in aid of the war to find men-at-arms at the King's nextcrossing, from his lands in Salop and co. Stafford.

He married, 1stly, Joan, daughter and heir of Sir John FITZNIEL, ofBoarstall, Bucks, Forester of Bernwood. He married, 2ndly, before 4December 1315, without licence from the Crown, Maud, widow of John.(Lovel], LORD Lovel, of Titchmarch, daughter, of Sir Philip BURNELL, ofActon Burnell, &c., by Maud, sister of Richard (FITZALAN), EARL OFARUNDEL, and daughter of John FiTZALAN. In 1315 she was sole heir to herbrother Edward (Burnell), Lord Burnell. They had livery of herinheritance 26 February 1315/6. She died before 17 May 1341. He died 5August 1346. (c) Sir Richard de Haudlo, son of Sir Nicholas de Haudlo, gave a grant inWaltham, Kent, in 1277/8. Sir Richard de Haudlo and Pauline deSeghalston held 1 fee in Crundale in 1284/5. Sir John de Haudlo, ofStreet, who d. about 1283, was apparently brother of Sir Richard deHaudlo and father of John de Haudlo, who was sheriff of Kent 1313 anddsp. about 1316, being succeeded by his brother Nicholas de Haudlo, whoalso dsp. 1316, and was succeeded by his sisters Margery and Lavina.

(o) This seems to show that Thomas had assumed the name of Burnell andwas therefore older than Nicholas, his brother, who eventually inheritedthe Burnell estates. In 1357 Thomas, son of John de "Hantlo", and Joan,daughter of Sir Thomas de Berkeley, had a dispensation to intermarry,they being related in the 4th degree, the marriage being desired becauseSir Thomas sided with Roger de Mortimer and John de "Hantlo" with Hugh leDespenser.

BARONY OF VAVASOUR (IV) 1322

HENRY LE VAVASOUR, brother and heir, was born circa 1290. He was said to have been a rebel ex parte the Earl of Lancaster in 1322, but recovered his goods, 9 April 1322, when his brother Robert acted as surety for his appearance in Court. After Robert's death his lands were delivered to him, August 1322. He is probably the man who was summoned to a Great Council in 1324; and he was granted free warren in Cocksford, Ferry Fryston, Stubbs, and Cockerington, and in Lindsey, Lincs, 18 July 1331.

SIR HENRY FITZ HUGH, of Ravensworth, &c., son and heir. As an adherent of Thomas, Earl of Lancaster, he was pardoned for any part he had taken against Piers de Gavastone, 16 October 1313. On 20 May 1315 he was granted 400 marks, in recompense for the expenses he had incurred when on the King's service in Scotland. He was Constable of Barnard Castle from 15 December 1315 to 27 September 1319. On 20 August 1321, as a follower of John de Moubray, he was pardoned for all felonies committed in the pursuit of the Despensers. He was summoned for Military Service from January 1299/1300 to 27 March 1335, to Councils from May 1324 to 25 February 1341/2, and to Parliament from 15 May 1321 to 15 November 1351, by writs directed Henrico filio Hugonis or fiiz Hugh', whereby he is held to have become LORD FITZHUGH. In May 1322 the Earl of Richmond accused him of having, with many followers -- -when the Earl was absent at the Parliament held in July 1321 --- besleged and taken the Earl's castle of Bowes, and having held it for a long time, doing great damage, finally leaving it without guard against the Scots. On 1 February 1322/3 he was ordered to arrest Andrew de Harcla, Earl of Carlisle, who had lately joined the Scots, or was considered to have joined them. He was appointed a justice, in Northumberland, Cumberland, and Westmorland, to hear and determine the oppressions committed by the King's ministers and others, 10 December 1340.

He married, 1stly, Eve, daughter of Sir John DE BULMERE, of Wilton in Cleveland and Bulmer co. York by Tiphaine, 2nd daughter and coheir of Sir Hugh DE MOREWIKE, of Morwick, Northumberland. He married, 2ndly, before 25 November 1337, Emma, daughter and heir of Sir Robert DE Cleseby, of Cleasby, Clowbeck, and East Tanfield, in Richmondshire, by Amabel, his wife: she had married, 1stly, before 24 April 1300, Sir Robert DE HASTANG, of Bagnall, co. Stafford, and Cowton in Richmondshire, sometime Keeper of Kingston-upon-Hull [LORD HASTANG], who died before 15 April 1336. She died s.p. before 13 October 1348. He died at Ravensworth in 1356. Henry Fitz-Hugh, from whom his descendants ever afterwards adopted the surname of Fitz-Hugh. This Henry was engaged in the Scottish wars from the 3rd to the 8th of Edward II [1310-1315], the next six years he was constituted, owing to the minority of the Earl of Warwick (whose inheritance it was), governor of Barnard Castle in the bishopric of Durham; and being again employed in Scotland, he was summoned to parliament as a baron from 15 May, 1321, to 15 November, 1351. In 1327, his lordship acquitted Sir Henry Vavasour, Knt., of a debt of 500 marks, by special instrument under his seal, upon condition that Henry Vavasour, Sir Henry's son, should take to wife Annabil Fitz-Hugh, his dau. In the 7th, 8th, and 9th Edward III [1334, 1335, and 1336], Lord Fitz-Hugh was again in arms upon the Scottish soil. His lordship m. Eve, dau. of Sir John Bulmer, Knt., and had, besides the dau. already mentioned, a son, Henry, who d.v.p., leaving issue by his wife, Joane, dau. of Sir Richard Fourneys, and sister and heiress of William Fourneys, a son, Hugh, m.
