He (Claudius) therefore proposed peace to him (Arvirargus), promising to give him his own daughter, if only he would recognize that the kingdom of Britain was under the sway of Rome. His nobles persuaded Arvirargus to abandon his plans for battle and to accept the proposals of Claudius. Their argument was that it could be no disgrace for him to submit to the Romans, since they were the acknowledged overlords of the whole world. Arvirargus was swayed by these arguments and by others of a similar nature. He accepted their advice and submitted to Claudius. Claudius soon sent to Rome for his daughter. With the help of Arvirargus he subdued the Orkneys and the other islands in that neighbourhood.

At the end of that winter the messengers returned with Claudius' daughter and handed her over to her father. The girl's name was Genvissa (=Genuissa). Her beauty was such that everyone who saw her was filled with admiration. Once she had been united with him in lawful marriage, she inflamed the King with such burning passion that he preferred her company to anything else in the world. As a result of this Arvirargus made up his mind to give some special mark of distinction to the place where he had married her. He suggested to Claudius that the two of them should found there a city which should perpetuate in times to come the memory of so happy a marriage. Claudius agreed and ordered a town to be built which should be called Kaerglou or Gloucester. Down to our own day it retains its site on the bank of the Severn, between Wales and Loegria. Some, however, say that it took its name from Duke Gloius, whom Claudius fathered in that city and to whom he granted control of the duchy of the Welsh after Arvirargus.

At any rate, Claudius is stated to have given Julia Venissa in marriage to Caradoc Arviragus, a Silurian-born Roman citizen later appointed King of the Province of Britain in Roman Britannia.

Caradoc and Julia took up residence in Britain and ruled the province with notable success, avoiding much of the civil unrest that plagued other provincial rulers of the time. They were contemporaries with Boudicca and Prasutagus, the legendary Icenian rulers.

The grandson of Caradoc and Julia, King Coilus of Britain (105-181), married Eugein Verch Cyllin, granddaughter of Boudicca and Prasutagus by way of Princess Julia of the Iceni, one of the two daughters raped by the Romans in the incident that started the famed uprising. This union gave rise to a line of rulers whose influence can be traced well past the Roman period.

This genealogical material is derived from the Historia Britonum, a 9th century legendary history that purported to relate the history of British inhabitants from earliest times, tracing their kings to Troy. The text has been much expanded and amended in the retelling and was used by uncritical medieval chroniclers to write histories of both England and Wales, for want of more reliable sources. None of this tale is confirmed in any of the contemporary Roman historical sources.

Boadicea (also spelled Boudicca or Boudica) was born into a royal family around 26 A.D. She married Prasutagus, king of the Iceni, a tribe located in what is now Norfolk, England. Prasutagus was a client-king, meaning he ruled under the auspices of the Romans <../Rome/index.html>, who had probably put him on the throne in return for his assistance when they invaded England in 43.

Upon Prasutagus's death around the year 59, the kingdom passed into the hands of the Romans. The king had hoped the Romans would allow his two teenage daughters to keep half of his property, but instead the Romans took over completely. When Boadicea complained, she was publicly flogged and forced to watch as her daughters were raped.

Infuriated, Queen Boadicea -- described by one Roman historian as a tall, terrifying-looking woman with fierce eyes, a harsh voice, and very long red hair -- became the leader of a violent uprising against Roman rule. The rebels destroyed London, Colchester, and other cities, slaughtering some 70,000 people.

But the Romans quickly put down the rebellion by defeating the undisciplined Britons in a ferocious battle (the exact site of which is uncertain). According to one account, Boadicea then killed herself with poison so she would not fall into Roman hands. Boadicea's name means "victorious," or Victoria, and in Victorian times she came to be viewed as a heroic symbol of Britain.
