396. Jno John WISE,107,215 son of John WISE and Margaret PEARDON, was born about 1768 in Warbstow, Cornwall, England.28
Research Notes: Warbestow is located about ten miles north-west of Launceston. The name is taken from the nun, St Waerburgha, daughter of an Anglo-Saxon king. Her relics, at Chester, were an object of pilgrimage in the Middle Ages. Warburghstow was mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086.
A John Wise was Catholic and resided in Lot 50 in PEI. He was born 17 Apr 1803 and died in PEI 17 Nov 1862 (too young to be the father of Joseph 1799) and he had a daughter Eliza b. 24 Jan 1842. A Mrs. John Bryenton arrived from Miramichi with a child 6 Aug 1839 on the ship Cape Breton. John Wise was a Postmaster and "Highly esteemed in the community" He resided in Dundas PEI, Lot 55 and was a Catholic. A Mr. J. Wise arrived 15 Aug 1843 according to the Royal Gazette. James Wise arrived on the ship Islander 29 Oct 1847 and he was a ships carpenter and rigger. James was married to an Irish woman named Bridget Cayle or Cole on 22 Jan 1855 in PEI. Another James Wise arrived 1 Nov 1847 on the ship Oregon from Boston, USA but appears to have been born in PEI and married Catherine Power on 20 Feb 1878. R. Wise arrived 16 Aug 1850 on the Westmorland, Robert Wise arrived 7 Sept 1854 on the Pictou Lady (unreadable). Some others arrived in PEI 15 July 1858 on the Westmorland Shediac and 16 Aug 1859 on the Pictou.
None of this ties Joseph and Grace Ryder to the Totnes family so I have taken that connection off my family information, however his father could have been John Wise because a Mrs. John Wise died in PEI 29 Mar 1852 Age 92 (would have been the right age to be Joseph's mother) A James Wise seems to be old enough to be Joseph's father too, so I have more questions than answers now!! I have proof of Joseph and Grace's marriage and that Joseph (1834) is their son, which is a start. It appears that Joseph (1799) was born in Devon or Cornwall and was the first to immigrate as both his sons are born in PEI. He may have immigrated prior to any of the listed arrivals.
There was a Jno and Geo Wise at Lot 54 and Heirs were Edward and Mrs. John (Lot 37) according to the 1880 Atlas, but I think these may be too young to be the connection.
There appear to be two families in PEI, one is Roman Catholic and mine are Bible Christians. The Catholic family is in Lot 55, 50, a different location in PEI from mine who are in Lot 32. I think my Joseph immigrated separately and his arrival information wasn't available.
I still hope to find the birth of Joseph Wise 1799 in Devon. That will be my next search.

General Notes: Information from Dennis L. Matthews family tree website: http://www.worldcap.com/worldcap/RRV-index.html that Joseph Wise immigrated from Devonshire England about 1827 to P.E.I.
On 17 September 1842, the executors of the Earl of Selkirk, an absentee landlord, leased 50 acres on Lot 31 to William Burgoyne, farmer of the same lot. He also leased 50 acres on Lot 31 to (son in-law) Joseph Wise, a farmer of Lot 31. Both of these are backdated to 01 January 1840 which would indicate that they were in possession of the lands before the actual lease was issued. Not an unusual occurrence.
On 03 October 1842, Joseph Wise transferred his lease to William Burgoyne which would then put Burgoyne in possession of the full 100 acres. (Since these farms were not described other than by a farm number and the numbers were left out of the transfers and deeds it is a little hard to tell for certain that we are at all times dealing with the same land.
A copy of the Crown Grant dated 05 Mar 1892 for Lot 31/122 covering 100 acres shows a chain of title reference on the left bottom corner with the following information: Lease No. 4. 50 acres. Lease to William Burgoyne (97/77) 17 Sep 1842. John Burgoyne (only son an heir) to William Matthews for life and to his son William Matthews (98/478) 16 Feb 1858. It also shows Lease No. 63 for 50 acres. Selkirk to Joseph Wise (Lib 98/482) on 17 Sep 1842, and transfer endorsed Joseph Wise to William Burgoyne 03 Oct 1842 and registered Lib. 98/484 on 03 Oct 1842. Also shows transfer from John Burgoyne to William Matthews (son). (90/079) Alex. Horn, admininstrator for William Matthews (son) assigns to William Matthews (son) (7/280) on 25 Mar 1876.
"The Islander" for 12 February 1858, p. 3
Died on the 6th inst. at the residence of Joseph Wise, New Glasgow Road (which would be in Lot 32) William Burgoyne, age 82, much respected. William B: circa 1776.
On 16 February 1858, John Burgoyne of Lot 21 (where North Granville is located) as only surviving son and heir of William Burgoyne transferred one lease for the 50 acres, which William Burgoyne got directly from the Selkirk estate, to William Matthews in trust for William Matthews, age 16, eldest son of William, Sr.
On the same day, John Burgoyne also transferred to William Matthews, Sr. in his own right the 50 acres which WIlliam Burgoyne had obtained by transfer from Joseph Wise. This, in effect, gave William Matthews, Sr. control over the entire 100 acres but half of which he holds only in trust for his eldest son. (This does'nt put Matthews on Lot 31 before 1858 but we might speculate that since Burgoyne was an old man when he got the leases, Matthews may have been farming the land for him as well as his own land.
On November 1876, Alexander Horne, as administrator of the estate of William Matthews, Sr., transferred the 50 acres which William Sr. had held through transfer from Joseph Wise to William Burgoyne to William Matthews in his own right to William Matthews, the eldest son. William Matthews, Jr. received crown grant A9-231 for the total 100 acres from the government after the said government took over all lands held by absentee landlords.
Also spelled Burgoin in Warbstow baptisms.

480. Thomas Alberts,132,197 son of Albert Thomas and Antje Folkert, was born in 1745 in Netherlands 197 and died on 1 August 1804 in Birdaard, Friesland, Netherlands 197 at age 59.
General Notes: Thomas Alberts lived and died before Napolean decread the "Surname Act of 1811". As a shoemaker, he probably was refered to as Thomas Alberts Schoenmaker. It is interesting to explore the origin of surnames in the Netherlands. These were the most frequent surnames in the Netherlands in 1947: De Jong "the young", De Vries "the Frisian", Jansen "son of Jan", Van den/der Berg "of the mountain", Bakker "baker", Van Dijk "of dike", Visser "fisher", Janssen "son of Jan", Smit "smith", Meijer/Meyer "occupation, a land agent".
Some surnames are referring to qualities of people, like De Jong "the young" but also De Groot "the big" or Dik "fat". There are a lot of geographic related names like De Vries and Van den Berg "of the mountain". By the way, there are no mountains at all in Holland! A third group is formed by the occupations. And last but not least: there are quite a number of surnames derived from first names, the so called patronymics.
Before 1811 everyone who had no surname was called by his or her first name, followed by the name of the father. If there was e.g. a father Klaas with a son Jan, the son was named Jan Klaassen or Klaasz. Even if the family had a surname, for example Bakker, the name of the father was often included. So the son was Jan Klaasz Bakker.
In the old days it was normal to name the first born son after the paternal grandfather, and the first born daughter to the maternal grandmother. The second son got the name of the other grandfather, and so on. You will notice that the classical model provides two names for sons and two for daughters. Often that was enough. If a child died at an early age, the next baby of the same sex got the first name of his deceased sibling. A family with only daughters maybe gave the third girl the female version of her grandfather's first name.
Female names are often easy recognizable by the suffix -je or -a. Maartje, Trijntje, Neeltje, Cornelia, Maria and Anna are all women names. Several names have a male and a female version:
Cornelis or Kees - Cornelia, Cornelisje or Neeltje
Johannes or Jan - Johanna or Jantje
Nicolaas or Klaas - Klaasje or Klasina
Hendrik - Hendrika or Hendrikje
Wilhelmus or Willem - Wilhelmina or Willempje
