Hearne Family in Arkansas and Oklahoma

As I have written before, Joshua went with his mother, Jane Campbell Hearne, to live with his sister Mary Jane and her husband James Franklin Darr after his mothers divorce from her husband, Joshua Allan Hearne. Living in the Darr household would have presented many opportunities for young Joshua Orr to become acquainted with businessmen of the town rather than the relative parochial existance of the homestead.

Since James Darr and his brothers were owners of successful businesses such as dry goods and general merchandizing it would make sense that he would probably have worked in these establishments and therefore learned how to proceed with his own business when the time came.

At about the turn of the century, the family moved again to Maud, Pottowatamie County, Oklahoma. There he set up a drug store and continued to practice medicine. There was a story that a birth certificate for grandfather Carl was not available because of a fire. This is not so, since Oklahoma did not begin keeping vital statistics until 1923. Further, there were few hospitals and in frontier towns befor 1900, none at all. Women gave birth to thier children at home.

The 1900 census for Oklahoma shows the entire family living in Maud. However, the census takers mis-interpreted the J.O. as James O. instead of "Joshua O.".

Living in the home were Martha, Wife, Lula bn. sep 1879, Clyde and Claude, bn. Nov. 1883; Charles G., bn. Oct. 1885; Emmet, bn. May 1888; James Edgar, bn. Feb. 1891; Floy, bn. Aug. 1891; Carl, bn. Feb. 1896.

The 1910 Pttawatomie census shows Flow and Carl still at home. Carles G. lives in his own household with wife Florence and children Mildred, 2 yrs., and infant Winona.

Claude C. with wife Quincy and infant Reba. Also living with he and Quincy is the brother James Edgar.

The other twin, Clyde, is with wife, winona. There is no census data for Emmet who would have been 22 yrs. old in 1910. He may have left the state.

J.O. and Mattie were proprietors of "J.O. Hearn Drugs" and J.O. also had his medical practice in Maud Ok. for about 20 years. Son Charles G. Hearn ran a resturant next door.

Sometime before 1918, twin sons Clyde and Claud moved the 60 or so miles north into Payne county and opened a Grocery Store at 805 North Cleveland in Cushing. The 1918 City Directory only shows Clyde and Claud there at the time.
The 1921 Cushing City Directory shows as Follows:

Charles G. Hearn (Florence) Shaffer Ref Co.
residence 715 S. Noble

James Edgar Hearn (Kate) Stillman Inland
residence 705 S. Noble

Clyde C. Hearn (Quincy) Proprietor Hearns Bros. Grocery
residence 317 W. Pecan

Claude J. Hearn (Nora) Manager Hearns Bros. Grocery
residence 519 N. Seay

Hearn Bros. Grocery C J Hearn Proprietor 805 N. Cleveland

Hearns Grocery J.O. Hearn Proprietor 303 E. Main

Joshua Orr Hearn (Mattie) Proprietor Hearns Grocery
residence 303 E. Main

Emmet O. Hearn Pumper residence 303 E. Main

Carl Hearn (Minnie) Stillman Inland
residence 615 N. Depot

So, according to this 1921 Cushing Directory, all the sons were living in Cushing. The daughters Lula and Floy were probably there at the time as well. Notice also that 33 yr. old Emmet is living with the parents in apartment above their store. J.O. Hearn's grocery store was just around the corner from the Hearns Bros. Grocery on Cleveland ave. which was owned and operated by Claude and Clyde.

Later Clyde J.Hearn's son, Hershel Wilcox Hearn, took over the store on Cleveland St. and ran it until the time of his death in 1967. I went by to take a picture of it and the house where they lived next door in 1999. It had become a loan co. The owners were upset with me taking pictures of it from across the street but became all smiles when I told them who I was.
