Biography

1850:

Stephen, son of Stephen and Frances Andrews, born 04 October in Elmsted, Kent.

1851:

Ann, daughter of Thomas and Ann Couchman, born 23 March in the parish of Upper Hardres, Kent. She was just in time to appear as a week old baby in the census, with the family living at Lynsore Bottom to the South East of Upper Hardres. Her father registered the birth on the 19 April. Five month old Stephen also appears in the census with his parents in Helchin, Elmsted.

1861:

Stephen appears in the census with his parents at Hill Street in Elmsted. Ann is living with her parents in Stove Street, Kingstone (aka Kingston), where the family appear to have moved when she was 4 or 5 years old.

1871:

Stephen is working as a Farm Servant for James Brice and lodging with him at Court Lodge Farm in the hamlet of Bossingham, one mile South from Upper Hardres (RG10/964 folio 68 p1 entry 4). James and his wife Margaret are comparatively well off. James Brice farms 200 acres and is able to employ a General Servant to help his wife, as well as providing lodgings for five Farm Servants. It was once the custom for young men to learn farming by living-in at a farm. They were usually employed on an annual contract. It is probably whilst working in this area that he meets his future wife, Ann Couchman.

1873:

Waltham 1881

Stephen marries Ann Couchman at Kingstone Church on the 01 January. The marriage was conducted by the Rector, Percy Croft and witnessed by Richard Couchman and Eliza Couchman. At some point the couple move to the village of Waltham, since their first three children are born there.

1879:

The couple’s first son Thomas Henry Andrews is born just before Christmas in December 1879. After three girls his birth must have been greeted with delight. He was baptised the following February at All Saints in Petham. However, the family joy was to turn to sadness when Thomas died the following July, aged just 7 months, from a combination of Whooping Cough and convulsions.

1881:

Milton 1877

By the census of this year Stephen and Ann are living in Milton Cottages in the parish of Chartham, Kent (RG11/0953 folio 12 p.17). After perusal of the census I believe this means they were living in a cottage in the hamlet of Milton, near to Chartham. Bagshaw’s 1847 History, Gazetteer and Directory of Kent notes that the in 1841 Milton had but one house and ten inhabitants. Perhaps the cottages were newly built as part of the improvements also mentioned by Bagshaw.  Stephen is an agricultural labourer. Their three daughters are listed as Elizabeth (8), Minn (5) [sic] and Rose (3).

1891:

The family have moved to Bramling Bottom near Littlebourne, Kent (RG12/705 folio 146 p. 33 entry 197). Elizabeth appears to have left the household, Minnie appears to have died  young, as has son Thomas. However, Rose isn’t lonely as she has been joined by four more siblings, all born at Chartham. They are Stephen (9), Mary Jane (7), Edith (5) and Alice (2). Stephen was destined to be the couple’s only son to reach adulthood and was probably spoilt rotten by his mother and sisters..

1892:

The year began on a happy note for Stephen and Ann with the birth of twin sons in March. William was born at 10:15 am, followed by Henry at 10:30 am. However, any happiness the couple felt was to be short lived. In August their daughter Elizabeth died from tuberculosis at the age of 19. Baby Henry followed a few weeks later after succumbing to severe malnutrition at 6 months. His brother William hung on until the following year, when he died aged 11 month following convulsions.

1901:

South Street 1821

Stephen and his son Stephen (19) are both working as agricultural labourers. The family has moved to South Street, a small hamlet about one mile from Boughton-under-Blean (RG13/802 folio 78 p.11 entry 63). Alice (12) is still living at home and there is another child, Louisa (6) who was born at Littlebourne.

1911:

On April 2nd Stephen and Ann are living at Witherdens Hall near Wingham, Kent (RG78PN189 RD64 SD2 ED3 SN31). The couple are most likely living in a cottage associated with the hall, as they occupy just 5 rooms. Stephen is still working as a Farm Labourer and Ann is listed as a fruit- and hop-picker. It was Ann who filled out the census form. Ann has noted that they had no less than 11 children born alive, but that 5 of them have already died. The couple have their grandson John Charles Andrews (3) living with them. John was the illegitimate son of Alice Emily Andrews. The boy may have been living with his grandparents to enable Alice to continue working as a domestic servant.

1928:

Stephen dies on the 18 October from a combination of heart failure, senile decay and chronic bronchitis . He was living at 2 Railway Buildings, Canterbury at the time of his demise and was listed as a former agricultural labourer, suggesting that he had retired from work prior to his death. The death was registered by his daughter Mary Jane Austen. The National Probate Calendar was checked for the years 1928-1930 but no grant of probate was found, suggesting that Stephen died intestate.

1947:

On the 05 April Ann  dies in the Municipal Hospital in Canterbury at the age of 97. Cause of death is given as Senility i.e. old age. She had been living at 72 Railway Cottages, St. Dunstans Street. Her death is registered on the 08 April by her daughter-in-law, Doris Annie ANDREWS.
