"Queen's County, in the Province of Leincester, is bounded in the north and west by King's county, in the east by Kildare and part of Carlow, to the south by Kilkenny, and south-west by Tipperary. Along the west boundary runs a range of high and steep mountains, and in the east the Dysart hills form a prominent and picturesque object. The lands have been thus distributed - Arable land, pasture, and meadow: 210,000 acres; Woods and plantations: 1,300 acres; Bog, mountain, and waste: 21,000 acres; Roads: 2,000 acres; Total area: 235,300 acres. Principle rivers, the Barrow and Nore. Chief towns, Maryborough, Portarlington, and Stradbelly. Almost every description of soil is found in this county, from a very stiff clay, to a light but fertile sandy loam. The principal mineral productions are coal and limestone. Pop. 90,000."
The map of Queens County is colorised to show the distribution or settlement of the Darmody and Dermody families according to the International Genealogical Index and the Griffiths Valuation (which are detailed below).
The IGI and Griffiths Valuation have been
grouped in Parish or Location areas rather than by name - this is to make
it easier to see other possible connections to the family.
