January 17, 1997:
The following is an understanding of what I have pieced together on how Jacobinna came to America. Jacobinna's mother, Epke, died in 1870. Jacobinna's father, Hillern, then married Maria Janssen. Hillern then died in 1880. The stepmother, Maria, then brought the Jacobinna, Harm, Gesche Margaretha and Helena, plus the three children (two sons and one daughter) she had had with Hillern to the United States in approximately 1880/1881.
Maria Janssen was supposely met in the United States by her brother, Harm Janssen. After Maria was in the United States she married Harm Hofeling.

Jacobinna's sister, Margaretha Gesche Frerich's married Geike Wessels, Thomas's older brother.

BIOGRAPHY

WALTER AND FRANCES (BUTZOW) WESSELS

Walter L. Wessels, son of Thomas and Jennie Wessels, was born
February 2, 1898 in Crescent Township, his grandparents were Friedrich and Gesche Wessels.
He started to Prairie County country school. When his parents moved, he attended Crescent City schools through eighth grade. He also attended Lutheran summer school.
When he wrote eighth grade examinations, his grades were high enough to earn a Lindly Scholarship. This scholarship paid his tuition at University High School in Normal 1913- 1917. While attending there he built much furniture in manual training classes - a library table, chair, flower stand and large davenport. This furniture is very useful and is still in good condition in their home (1985). He had many opportunities for learning and reading at the large University library. He played on the football team two years and always retained an interest in the game. After graduation in 1917 he returned to his parent's home to help with farming as his brother Fred was married and brother Herman was in the Army. Sister Letha became a nurse and Edith was in school.

Walter Wessels and Frances Butzow, oldest child of Otto and Anna Butzow, were married in January 11,1922. Frances was a country school teacher and had worked at the Chicago Store in Watseka. They lived on a rented farm - bought furniture, tools and Implements at farm sales. They had four horses, some cattle, hogs and chickens. Walter had a Ford touring car. In those days they sold cream and eggs in exchange for groceries. Walter planted corn using fertilizer for first time in that area. Farmers raised corn, oats, wheat and clover. A few years later soy beans were added to crops.
After their first year, they moved to his parents farm a mile away. In 1923 they bought a Fordson tractor and plow. Some limestone was also spread besides corn fertilizer used. Two of their three children, Natalie and Russell, were born there before they moved to the Koester 240 acre farm in Ash Grove in 1928. Natalie started to country school and daughter Irma was born there. They returned to the Wessels land where they formerly lived in 1932. Then Natalie and Russell attended town school. The farm was sold and they had no land to rent so they had a farm sale in 1936. They lived north of Fidler Bridge and Walter worked at road construction during summers and at Fanyo Garage. In 1939 they bought a tractor and tools to start farming again on a small farm. The next year they moved to the Mueller farm in the bend of Iroquois River. This land was subject to flood and they lost one vear's crop of soy beans and in 1943 no planting could -be done until after June 15 because of high water in May.
Their children graduated from Watseka High School. Natalie went to college at llinois USA State and Russell was in the Army for 2 years (1951-1953) with 18 months on Okinawa. When Russell returned from the Army, he started farming on the Mueller farm. He married Darlene Dienst, of Somonauk, Illinois USA, in 1957. Walter and Frances moved to several farms before buying 100 acres in Douglas Twp. where they farmed for 17 more years. They retired in 1978, sold the farm and it became strawberry fields. Now they are living in Crescent City and have been married more than 63 years.
They belong to St. Peter Lutheran Church in Crescent City. Walter is a member of Farm Bureau and has served as director. Frances has been a Sunday School teacher, is a charter member of Iroquois Co. Home Extension, has served in all offices of Crescent Iroquois Unit, Is a member of Crescent Grandmothers and of Spring Creek Club.
Their daughter Natalie became a teacher, had a master's degree from ISU, also was a school librarian. She died of cancer November 5, 1977. Russell and Darlene live northeast of Watseka along the river and have farmed and worked at several places in Watseka. They have 3 children, all graduates of ISU. Daughter Irma was first one married in 1949 to Wendell Mueller. They are farming, have 3 sons Lyal, Neal, and Bruce, and have built a new home on land they own northwest of Gilman.
Besides the 5 grandsons and one granddaughter, Walter and Frances have 2 great- grandchildren, Tricia and Kyal Mueller.

Wessels, Friedrich Hillern Johann (b. 10 APR 1889, d. 12 DEC 1980)
Note: Full Name: Fred Hillern Johann Wessels

Celebrated 50th Anniversity in Crecent City in 1965.

Notes from Shanda

Approximately 1993/1994, my mother Winifred R. Burrow, relayed to me:

I had asked my mom if she remembered where they lived prior to moving to the current "Home 80". The only place that she could remember, Grandpa and Grandma, Fred and Theda, lived was in Ash Grove Township, between 110 and 1200N. and 1800 and 1900E in Section 12 of Ash Grove East platbook. She thinks she was about 12 years old. Their neighbors were Frank and Lena Rapp. The houses where fairly close together. We drove other there and the house that the Rapps lived in is now gone and has been replaced by a more modern brick style house. The other house, Mom believes is lived in by Wendell Heeron.

They farmed 120 acres she thinks. Between the houses then there were fruit orchards. Grandpa, (Fred), tended bees there and provided honey for the familes. They had food gardens, the orchards, chickens and the rest was agricultural.

In 1927, they moved to the present farm at 1700E/1750N. (Grandpa, Grandma, Caroline, Mom and Wes. The original house was smaller and one story. It burned. My grandfather then moved the current farm house from to that location. This farm is still there. They did add on a enclosed "porch" and later a small bathroom. The house is still in that same form. Though now, 1996/1997, at the passing of my mother, Winifred, we are having to fix the place back up, because it is getting very run down. At this time the only outside changes they we are making is to pull down the old porch on Northside of the house which is falling off and rebuild it and continue to wrap the porch all the way around the West side of the house to the main entrance door that we use there.
