Eric-C-Bartelt (1887-1954)

Eric C. Bartelt was born on July 26, 1887 in Wausau, WI.He was the son of Gottlieb and Emma (Gralow). Gottlieb had arrived in the US in 1878 and Emma had arrived in 1883 from Prussia. German was spoken in their house growing up. Gottlieb and family were farmers.

He married Elsa HEISE on October 30, 1909 in Wausau, WI. It seems that Eric and Elsa moved to Muscatine, IA some time around 1915. In 1924, Elsa died at the age of 33. At this time his daughter, Sylvia seems to have taken over the duties of raising the children. Eric's sisters (Lillie and Ella) also moved from Wausau to Muscatine to help with the children.

Eric spent the remainder of his life in Muscatine, IA where he was a carpenter. Eventually, he married Bertha ROBY who was said to be a very funny lady. Bertha (SSN 481-05-6299) Roby was born on July 11, 1886 and died in January of 1973 in Muscatine, IA. Eric was of the German Protestant faith. Eric is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine, IA.

The 1920 Census of Muscatine County shows Eric living with his wife Elsa,. sons Arnold, Harold, Kenneth, daughter Sylvia, brother Hugo (24), and sister Lillie (27).

Eric died on August 9, 1954 in Muscatine, IA and is buried in Greenwood Cemetery with his sons Kenneth, Ralph, and Harold. A daughter (Lilly) and grandson (Leonard) that were taken were very young are also buried on Eric's plot in Greenwood.
