GOTTLIEB FRIEDRICH WILHELM BARTELT was born February 7, 1847 in Franzfelde, Kreis Narguard, Pomerania, Germany, and lived until 90 years old.  At the age of 31, Gottlieb came to the United States ( August 21, 1878 on the SS Frisia -OR-FRESIA). The ship sailed from Hamburg & Havre.  When he arrived in Wisconsin, he worked as farm labor for a few years.  On Mar. 8, 1882, Gottlieb purchased 80 ACRES (T30N, R6E) in Berlin Twp from August and Sophie Kamrath for $1250.00.

He married Emma Gralow on Sept 14, 1883 in Wausau, WI, daughter of Friedrich A. Gralow and Louise Jahnke. Gottlieb listed his father as Friedrich Bartelt and his mother as Maria Bartelt at the marriage.

Emma was German/Lutheran. She came to the United States in 1883 with her parents. On Feb 12, 1900 Gottlieb sells his land for $2200.00 via Quit Claim Deed to Otto Nass. On March 15, 1900, Gottlieb purchases land (T29N, R6E) from Gary and Wiilhemine Lodholz for $800.

In the 1910 Federal Census Gottlieb (age 63) was living on Farm Schedule #125 with wife Emma (50), daughters Otillie (inputed Otilie age 23), Lillie (referenced as Lydia age 17), Clara (age 13), Ella (age 11), and Emma (age 7) and sons William (age 20), Albert (age 18), Hugo (age 15), and Gottleib, Jr. (age 10).

Gottlieb passed on Apr 1, 1937.  Gottlieb's death certificate has his father listed as William.

In 1939, The Wausau, WI Centennial Association Interviewed the Family for the Historical Reference Library and Museum. Some of the dates and names seem to conflict with other sources, but Gottlieb was about 90 years old and spoke mostly German his whole life. Interview Link

As legend has it Gottleib believed that his name was supposed to be spelled BARTTELT. He claims that when enterring the United States, customs changed his name. He also claims that the govt. stole a "T" from him. His gravestone is confirmed that buried with the name spelled BARTTELT. Other information supports and error made by the engraver. However, on Fred and Louise's Marriage Certificate, both Fred and Gottlieb's name is spelled BARTTELT. Also, the Naturalization papers (dated 1900) spell Gottlieb's name as BARTTELT. The mystery continues.

Gottlieb is also said to have come over with 2 bachelor brothers who moved to the Dakotas and were never heard from again.
