| Charles Heisserer was born October 25, 1846 in Schirrhein, Alsace to Anton Heisserer and Katharina Hahn. Before the age 1,
Charles and parents came aboard the ship JOHN CADMUS destined for the United States.
Times were tough, and the Captain was a very hard man. Everyone that was able to
work had to do something. Even the children were put to hard labor. After 56
days ast sea, they landed in New Orleans on Oct 20, 1847. From New Orleans they took
steam boat up the Mississippi River destined for Benton. As they didn't know where
Benton was they sailed right by and ended up in St. Louis. They then informed the
Captain that they had gone 165 miles too far and struck a deal for them to be taken to
Commerce. By 1850, Charles father Anton is blind. As legend has it, many of the men had contracted cholorea and a doctor attempted to treat Charles case by pouring acid directly into his eyes. This drained the fluid and robbed him of his sight for the rest of his life. At this point, Charles brother Vincent is 14 years old and Rosina is the youngest in the family at the age of 1. Anton and family are residing in Scott County, MO. In 1860, the family is living in Benton, Scott, Co., MO. Vincent is not recorded in the household at this time. John(20), Simon(18), and Clemens(15) are employed as farm hands. Charles (13) is attending school with his sister Rosine(11) and Nicholas(9). In 1870, Charles(25) is living with brother John and working as a Farmer in Kelso, MO. On Sept 12, 1871, Charles married Elizabeth Bucher. 10 months later Charles Louis Heisserer (7/4/1872) was born. On the 31st of that month, Elizabeth passed away. In August of the following year, Charles Heisserer married Mary Magdelena Ellinger, the daughter of Elias and Rosina Ellinger of Perry, Stark, Ohio. The Ellinger also descend from Alsace. 1 month after the union, Charles Louis died at the age of 14 months. On Jun 21, 1874, Charles and Mary gave birth to twins. (Elias Anton and Magdelena Louise). By the 1880 Census, both twins had not survived. Three children were listed, Bertha Emma(3), Katherine(2), and Ottilia(5/12). Otillia passed away in 1886. In the 1900 Federal Census, Mary reports that she has given birth to 6 children and 4 survived. I seem to count 3 children (the twins and Otillia) that have not survived, but maybe one Magdelena was still born. At this time (1900), Charles and Mary have 3 children living at home in Kelso. The children are Katie R(22), Andrew J(18), and Ortilla L(14).
