Hiram Milton Mapes



Hiram Milton Mapes was born in Dec. 20, 1825 in Markham Twp, York Co. Ontario to Joseph Mapes and Anna Stover. He married Lucy SCOTT on December 28, 1853 at St. James Church in Toronton, Canada. After the marriage Hiram moved South to Portland, Ionia County, Michigan. While in Michigan, the Civil War broke out between the states. Hiram was mustered into the military on September 2, 1863 and served on the Union side of the War. On August 27, 1963 he enlisted in Company G of the 10th Cavalry Michigan Volunteers as a Corporal. On March 15, 1864, he was promoted for full seargant. He was discharged in Quincy, Illinois on June 22, 1865. After the war, Hiram moved the family to Nichols, Muscatine, Iowa where he spent his days as a Carpenter and Contractor. Hiram and wife Lucy resided in Nichols, IA for most of their lives. Hiram and his wife lived in Florida for 2 years after retirement. More Information on the 10th Calvary (Battles Fought, Roster, etc..) Hiram Milton Mapes died on December 26, 1901 in Nichols, IA and at the time of his death had over 18 grand-children. His wife Lucy died some 10 years later in 1911. Hiram and Lucy are buried in Nichols Cemetery in Muscatine County, Nichols, Iowa.
