Sarah Agnes Morris was born Jan 1, 1856 in Ireland to James Morris and Alice Shield.  At the age of 1 (1857), Sarah and family came to America and settled in Muscatine, IA.

The 1860 Census lists James (45), Alice (35), Sarah (9), Ellen (7), Dennis (4), and Alice (1) living in Lake Township, Mucatine County, Iowa.  James Morris is listed as a farmer with a personal estate worth $200.  James and Alice are listed as not being able to read and write.  Alice died in 1862 and James died Aug 29, 1877.  Both are buried at St. Mary's, Cemetery, Bloomington, IA

On Dec 15th, 1878, Sarah married Fred Brighton Mapes in Muscatine, IA.  On August 1, 1879, Sarah and Fred gave birth to twin girls, Lucy and Mary Alice.  Unfortunately, only Lucy survived.   The 1880 Federal Census lists Frederick Mapes (20), Sarah (25), Lucy (Aug 1880), and Sarah's sister Alice Morris (19) all living in the Pike Township of Muscatine County, IA.  The 1900 Federal Census shows the family still living in Pike, Muscatine, IA.  At this point Sarah has given birth to 8 children and only 7 have survived.  In both Census, Fred's occupation is listed as farmer.  In the 1910 Federal Census, Sarah is actually listed as Clara (55), wife of Fred (50).  In 1910 Sarah still lists 8 children, 7 surviving.   Fred passed in 1912 and is buried at Nichols Cemetery, Muscatine, IA.   In 1925, Sarah is listed as 73 years old and living with daughter Mamie and Benjamin Nye Smith. In 1930, Sarah (78) is living with Mamie and her children.   Benjamin passed in Feb of 1930. Sarah passed on Sept 30, 1935 at the age of 79.   Sarah MORRIS was an Irish Catholic. She spent 2 years in Philadelphia, PA. Sally BARTELT was said to be named after her grandmother Sarah Agnes MORRIS.

NOTES:  The Dates and ages listed in the 1860 Census do not seem to fit correctly with the other Census information and burial records.   It appears that they are 5 years off.  For instance, James is listed as 45 (making dob 1825, yet his burial records list his 1819.  Sarah is listed as being 9 years old in 1860 (approx dob. 1851) and her burial records list dob as Jan 1, 1856 and the 1880 census lists her age as 25 (approx dob 1855) and the 1900 Census lists Sarah's dob as Jan 1855.  This is either a mistake or the family living in Lake Twp is not the same family although the childrens names and order are exact.  As both James and Alice were deceased by 1880, it difficult to verify.
