The John Confussion.

For years I and many others have had John (b. abt 1769) (married to Margaretha Elisabeth ALTEMUS (b.15 Apr 1771)) attached to Conrad Meixel (b. abt 1725) as Johns father. This is consistent with the Ardella Rohde book and many LDS records. As I worked through some Ancestry data, I was finding other with the same John attached to Johannes (John) Meixel.

After some emails, I believe I have it straight. See Dale Berger's email below for the explanation. Thanks so much to Dale for the clarification.

I have attached the correct John to Johannes Meixel.

Hi Dan,

The John Mikesell, who married Margaretha Altemus, was NOT a son of Conrad Meixel.

John Mikesell, Jr. and his wife, Margaretha Elisabeth Altemus, both came from what is now Monroe Co., PA, and settled in Centre Co., Indiana Co., PA, sometime between 1790 and 1798. On 14 April 1786, John Meixell, aged 17 years old, was confirmed and made a member of St. Matthews Church at Kunkletown. (Matthews pg. 1232) In 1790 John Miksel Jr. was living in Chestnuthill Twp., Northampton Co., PA. Living in his household were one male over age of 16 and one female. (1790 census)

John Mikesell, Jr. (abt. 1768/1769 - 22 Aug 1826) was one of 11 children of Johannes "John" Meixel, Sr. (4 Oct 1733-29 Oct 1808) and Anna Margaretha Illig (abt. 1739-May 1814) of Chestnuthill Twp., Northampton (now Monroe) Co., PA. John Mikesell, Jr. is mentioned in several documents pertaining to John Sr.'s estate, on file at the Northampton County courthouse in Easton, PA. (Estate file #2524, name of "John Mixwell", Register of Wills, and orphans court book 8, pp. 301, 510, 570, 584, 607, 622, 634 and book 9, p. 30)

John Jr.'s wife, Margaretha Elisabetha Altemus (15 Apr 1771-30 Jan 1854), was a daughter of Nicholas Altemus and Schalotta Frantz. Margaretha's brother, Adam Altemus, also settled in Indiana Co.

Let me know if I can be of further help.

Dale

Hello,

You're probably right about it. My website is certainly not authoritative. It is the data from my Aunt Elsie's research which has a lot of errors.

Thanks for your input.

I believe I may have confusion in my Mikesell data. Years ago I had a web site devoted to the Mikesell surname due to time problems and server restrictions, I let it die in about 2000. I now have more time and have set up on freepages.

I have been checking other internet Mikesell data and have found inconsistancy in some of the early Mikesells.

I have John(b. abt 1769) married to Margaretha Elisabeth ALTEMUS (b.15 Apr 1771). I have this Johns father as Conrad Meixel (b. abt 1725).

You have the same John attached to Johannes (John) Meixel.

I also have a John attached to Johannes but I have this John born in 1753. Of course with a different spouse.

Many others are listing Margaret Altimus as wife to John (1753).

I checked back and mine is consistant with the Ardella Rohde book.

What do you think?

Regards

Dan
