William Irving Sr. (M)
(circa 1860 - before 1904), #1923

William was born at Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania, USA, circa 1860. He married Ellen Bissonett circa 1875.1 William's occupation: Wild Bill Cody's Wild West Show. He became a Lakota translator for Buffalo Bill's show. He was also a trick rider, who is pretty well known by his stage name, "Bronco Bill". I am still researching because "Bronco Bill" has been the nickname of a couple of men from that era (one was a crazy man crook, I think in Wyoming and the other traveled the SW). However, since he was associated with the show, I think William "Bronco Bill" Irving is the man who was the model for the famous comic books in the mid 1900's, and perhaps the many movies made in the early 1900's. After 1884. He was listed as "son" and residing in the home of Ellen Bissonett on the U.S. Indian Census Rolls taken on July 1, 1892 at Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, White Clay District, Shannon Co., South Dakota, USA.2 William died before 1904.3

Dull Knife; The Treaty of Fort Laramie was an agreement between the United States and the Lakota nation, signed in 1868 at Fort Laramie in the Wyoming Territory, guaranteeing to the Lakota ownership of the Black Hills, and further land and hunting rights in South Dakota, Wyoming, and Montana. The Powder River Country was to be henceforth closed to all whites. The treaty ended Red Cloud's War. The treaty included articles intended to "insure the civilisation" of the Lakota; financial incentives for them to farm land and become competitive - and stipulations that minors should be provided with an "English education" at a "mission building". To this end the US government included in the treaty that white teachers, blacksmiths and a farmer, a miller, a carpenter, an engineer and a government agent should take up residence within the reservation. Repeated violations of the otherwise exclusive rights to the land by gold prospectors led to the Black Hills War.
