Seth Dismounts Thrice Sr. was born on June 6, 1934 at Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, Cuny Table, Shannon Co., South Dakota, USA.1 He was the son of Edward Dismounts Thrice.1 Seth Dismounts Thrice Sr. married Katherine Chasing Horse in 1953 at Denver, Arapahoe Co., Colorado, USA.1 Seth Dismounts Thrice Sr. died on March 20, 2005 at age 70; RAPID CITY - Seth was born to Edward and Sally (Randall) Dismounts Thrice on June 6, 1934 on the Pine Ridge reservation within the Kyle District. His childhood was spent in and around the Potato Creek and Wamblee Districts. He attended the Wamblee Day School daily by horseback up until the loss of his father at the age of 14, when he had to quit to go out and work by harvesting potatoes/corn to help support the family. Seth married Katherine Chasing Horse in 1953 in Denver, Colorado; soon after they made their home in Rapid City. They were loving parents to a family of four boys and one girl, "Lenny," "Benny," "Randy," Sandy and Seth Jr. "Marty." Sadly, Seth was witness to an unforgettable, unimaginable car accident in 1986 that took the lives of his wife Katherine, their sons Randy and Benny, daughter-in-law Teresa (Greene) and three adorable grandbabies Patricia, Kateri and Jennifer Dismounts Thrice. It was Seth's steadfast faith and love for the Lord that brought him and family through this tragedy. In 1990 he met a friend that would become his lifelong companion and wife. He married Alvena High Elk and from that union their son Sylvan was born in 1994. Among several outstanding jobs Seth was very proud of his positions and experiences with the Buckingham Wood Products, where he worked for 9 years, along with the South Dakota Concrete for 12 years. Seth often reminisced about the challenges he faced as a Black Hat Sioux Firefighter and always encouraged others to do the same, but his most favored personal achievement in life was being a part of the Salvation Army Corps where he dedicated approximately 20 years. Seth retired from the Salvation Army just this past January 27, 2004. Seth is survived by his wife Alvena High Elk of Rapid City; three sons, Leonard Dismounts from Huron, Seth Jr., & Sylvan Dismounts Thrice, both from Rapid City; one daughter, Sandra, California; sister Bertha Whirlwind Horse of Huron; two daughters-in-law, Charlene of Rapid City, and Mary Kay of Huron; 11 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews. Services will be held at Mother Butler Center at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 24, with Father Paul Sneve officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Kirk Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
