Joseph and Eliza lived on a farm in north west of Smith Township, Lot 32, Consession 17, until Joe's death in 1863. Alexander (Sandy) MILLAGE, the son of John MILLAGE and Christianna KENNEDY, was born on November 6, 1838 at St. John's Island (Prince Edward Island). He married Mary Ann DAVIS on June 16, 1867, and they had four children. Mary Anne was born Febraury 21, 1846 in Cavan Township, Peterborough County, Upper Canada, (daughter of John DAVIS and Lucinda MURPHY) died 31-Aug-1912, Douro Township, Peterborough County, Ontario, buried: Lakefield Cemetery, Lakefield, Ontario. Alexander died on 02-Aug-1916 at Douro Township, Peterborough County, Ontario. He was buried at Lakefield Cemetery, Lakefield, Ontario.

Alexander is listed in the Peterborough County Historical Atlas as being the first Millage to settle in Peterborough County in 1860, in Smith Township. (Although Joseph was married in Peterborough 7 years earlier). Alex purchased a small lot in North Smith, S 1/9f of Lot 39, Consession 15. According to land records he owned Lot 39, Concession 15 until 1877.

At the Edge of the Shield,
A History of Smith Township, 1818-1980
    , pg 106:
"Alex Millage purchased Lot 40, Concession 16, from the Canada Company, and cut timber off the property during the last part of the 19th century. He built this cabin as living quarters for the lumbermen, and a similar one nearby to be used as a cook house. The construction of this building resembles the shanties built by the early settlers."

(According to records at the Peterborough County Land Registry, this property remained in the Millage family until about 1980.) Alex married Mary Ann Davis, of Cavan, on June 14th, 1867. They later moved to a farm on the Otonabee River just north of the City of Peterborough Lot 10, Consession 8, in Douro Township. They purchased this farm in 1879. (While searching other Peterborough Townships census and tax assment records I have come across Alex listed as working as a lumberman in Douro, Dummer and Harvey townships between 1865-1881.)

*John Millage (?-1862), although I'm not 100% certain about John Millage's relationship to the three Millage brothers, I did find two documents that leed me to believe there was another Millage brother living in Smith Township in the early 1860's. If this gentleman wasn't another brother then he must have been their father. The first place I found mention of John was from an article in a Peterborough newspaper: From the Peterborough Review, 5-Sep-1862. "John Milledge, a lumberman, was found dead in Mr. Boswell's stable in Smith. An inquest was held on the body and a verdict rendered to the effect that deceased died of disease of the heart." I also found possible mention of John on a land record from the dead my great great grandfather Charles Millage purchased in Smith Township in 1863, the name John was crossed out and Charles was written above. Whether this was just an error or in fact John had planned on purchasing the property before he died is a mystery.
