"Anyone visiting the Hatton relatives at Young's Point loved for entertainment to see the boats going through the Young's Point Locks. Swimming became in for ladies, who previously just paddled their feet, or waded around to keep cool.

The late Mrs. Gould (Maude Millage) gave me a description ... "we wore a lustre dress which allowed the water to run off. It was worn over bloomers. Lead weights in the hems kept the dress down, black stockings, rubber bathing shoes and a hot. After my grandfather Joseph Millage drowned on an early May morning, my parents (Matila Hatton and Joseph Millage, Jr.) saw to it that we learned to swim ...

The way I remeber it told", said Maude, " It was a very cold April in 1863, but by the end of the month, the maple tapping was finished, Spring thaw was in progess, the ice just out of the Stoney Lake. Three men rented a canoe and went out spearing fish. One of the men turned to grip onto some floating pine branches causing the boat to upset, and with the exception of Joe, who was a very strong swimmer, they couldn't swim. Between the exhaustion of saving his two companions, the icy water and going back for the rented canoe, he took cramps and went under a boom of logs. He was not located in the bay, until the next morning.

When we became old enough to understand," said Maude, " we often wondered, without insurance, how the poor soul Eliza (Bolton) Millage, managed, but my grandmother was a bright, cheerful little woman, whom everyone loved very much. She always wore a black bonnet with black ribbons which she tied carefully under her chin. When her husband died, she was a very broken hearted, and though she could have married again, she was never interested in any man, more than friendship."

And in conclusion ... "In 1870 the "Midland Railway", extended its line from Peterborough to Lakefield. My dad, Joseph Millage got a call to go to the Haliburton terminus to work for the "Grand Trunk Railway." He was moved from there in March, as a night foreman in the shops at the Midland terminus. His brothers, Alexander and Charles Millage, who had been with CPR out of Lakefield, later to Lindsay for a long time, would finally move to Detroit and work for the "Michigan Central." The total of these families would be 21. In the summertime, all of them would arrive on railroad passes, to visit a forth brother, John Millage of Lakefield. And disperse themselves amoung various other area relatives. To say the least", said Maude, "we made quite a crowd ... and yet, all the aunts there seemed happy to see us and gave us a great welcome!"

Through the Years in Douro, pg130. "Among the interesting people I found at Harbourne (Nursing Home) was Alex Millage who lived all of his 89 years in Douro Township. With his long beak like nose, and his white nightcap tied under his chin, he looked like a character straight out of a Dickens novel. Setting aside his pipe, he told me many things about his early life in Douro, how he lived near the water on the 8th Concession, and how because of having the dropsy he had to leave school after only two years. "Katie Maloney was my school teacher" he recalled, "and she was awful good to me because I was so frail." "But they took me to Dr. Burnham on Water Street in Peterborough and he cured me", he said. When I asked him what on thing he remembered best about long ago Douro, his response was immediate. "The raising of the bell on Douro Church" he smiled, "I'd never forget that as long as I live. They had an awful time trying to raise it." Mindful that this was before the days of powerful cranes and derricks, I asked how they did it. "Oh, they had to have all kinds of horses and blocks and lines" he said "it was a powerful heavy bell that one. Though we lived about five miles from the church you could hear it ring just as if it were only over the hill. It rang three times a day, and when we heard that bell at noon it meant time to hustle in to dinner."
