Christopher Rote
Christopher Columbus Rote, a pioneer in the fight against toll roads many years ago, died in his home near the Old Factory Bridge at 11:15 o'clock Friday morning. He would have been eighty years old on February 9.
Mr. Rote, long a picturesque character in the southern section of the city, was best known because of the many years he spent in the milk business. His route was probably the longest served by any distributor in the city.
Born in the Rote home at Duke and Rockland streets, Mr. Rote spent his entire life in that neighborhood. He was a son of Samuel and Susan Rote.
Early in life Mr. Rote learned the blacksmith trade but later operated the milk route, a business he followed for 25 years.
In his early years Mr. Rote decided that the toll gates were an undemocratic institution and he launched a fight to remove the toll gate at the end of Rockland street so that travelers could enter Lancaster at the south without paying toll. He carried the fight to the Supreme Court at his own expense and was beaten. Undaunted by his first failure he started a new fight to have Duke street opened to the south.
He was a member of the Lutheran church in this city.
The following children survive. Mrs. Elizabeth Gephart, Mrs. Catharine Herr and George of this city; Mrs. Ezra Miller, Ronk; Mrs. Ada Herr, R.d. 6; Mrs. Louisa Lentz, Witmer; Mrs. Alice Parmer, R.D. 4; Samuel, at home; and one sister, Mrs. Mary Mittle, of this city, and two brothers, John, Lancaster, and Abram, of Montana. Thirty-three grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren also survive. Services will be from the home on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock with interment in Riverview Burial park.
