Orville Lawson Williams Jr.
History teacher and wrestling coach
Orville Lawson Williams, Jr., 70, died Monday, April 18, 2005, in Baptist Hospital East, Louisville, Ky.
He was a native of Clarksburg, W.Va., and a graduate of Tarkio College, Tarkio, Mo., with a bachelor of arts degree.
Mr. Williams was a world history teacher at Seneca High School for 41 years. He was a member of Cedar Creek Baptist Church and the former minister of music at Green Acres Baptist Church and First Baptist Church of New Albany. He was a member of the Stephen Foster cast for 26 seasons as "Gottlieb Igoe." He was a wrestling coach for 26 years and managed the state tournament for 23 years. The "most outstanding wrestler" award was named in his honor at KHSAA State Wrestling Tournament.
Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Betty Acklin Williams; four children, Larry D. Williams, Kathy Williams-Huntley, Steve R. Williams and Bill L. Williams; a sister, Loretta Skeens; and eight grandchildren.
Visitation is from 1 to 8 p.m. in Resthaven Funeral Home, 4400 Bardstown Road, Louisville, Ky., where services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday with entombment in Resthaven Memorial Park Mausoleum. Expressions of sympathy may go to American Diabetes Association.
