Fife Lake, Grand Traverse County:
L. L. Shaw and others, from Grand Rapids, platted a village as Fyfe Lake, and Thomas T Bates platted another as North Fyfe Lake, both in 1872; Richard P. Thurber became the first postmaster of Fyfe Lake on Dec 12, 1872, with the spelling corrected to Fife Lake on Dec 1, 1875, for they had been named after the lake they border, which in turn had been named for William H. Fife, of Acme, a state highway commissioner; the two towns were incorporated as the village of Fife Lake in 1889.
