Below is the exact text of a fax sent to me by Maureen Solomon. Her note to me was:
"I retyped the second page to facilitate faxing. I don't know who sent this to me (probably Harry Steele) and certainly don't know who Mr. Hamontree is or where Keyes, OK is!!. interesting background on the family. But the obit does provide some Please keep me in mind if you run across any more information on Benjamin and Janet MacKenzie Gunn. I wonder if anyone back there would take a picture of the tombstones?? Maybe I'll put a query on the Marshall page. Good luck with your search for Michael's wife's maiden name. Let me know what you find out."
This was taken from a newspaper clipping in 1907. This the Great Grandfather of Melvin Charles Hammontree Keyes Oklahoma.
OLDEST RESIDENT OF WEST FINLEY HAS PASSED AWAY
Franklin Gunn died Yesterday at the advanced age of 92 years, four months
27 days. He was a native of West Finley Pa. He had always enjoyed good health until his last illness. A staunch Democrat all his life.
West Finley May 27, 1907
In the death of Franklin Gunn at his home at this place tonight West Finley loses it's oldest citizen and one of the oldest men in the county passes to his reward. Mr. Gunn was aged 92 years four months and 27 days. He enjoyed remarkable health almost up to the time of his death, A few days ago he was taken ill and declined rapidly. His wife and the following children survive: Samuel Gunn, Majorsville; John Gunn, West Finley; Mrs. James Dennison ; Claysville; Mrs. David Patterson, Wyland; and Hannah Gunn of Washington Pa. The funeral will be conducted from the late home of the deceased on Wednesday at 10 o'clock a. m. and the Interment mill be mode in the chapel burying ground near this place.
The Gunn family were pioneer residents of Washington County. The parents of Franklin Gun, Benjamin and Janet Gunn, were born near Aberdeen Scotland and coming to America over a century ago, settled on a small piece of ground near Canonsburg. The family remained in the neighborhood of Philadelphia a few years prior to coming east and the object of removing was to find a piece of land which could be purchased reasonably.
Later the family removed to West Finley township, about three miles north of Burnsville, where the head of the family purchased 200 acres of land for which a nominal consideration was paid. In an endeavor to comply with the conditions in the purchase of the land the family met with extreme difficulties.
The ground had to be cleared and planted and not withstanding Mr. Gunn and his boys raised a considerable amount of corn and other products they could not find a market for their grain, etc. and as there were no other means at hand to make payments on their property, the whole family found it necessary to remove to Wellsburg where work was secured.
In the course of time by perseverance and economizing, the family raised enough money to settle every payment on their farm, after which the family removed back to their purchase and began life with renewed vigor. Large tracts were cleared and Mr. Gunn and his sons raised the grain they needed and besides flax in large quantities. By these means they managed to live and had enough clothing to wear. The mother wove all the clothing worn by the members of the family, and horn time to time new tracts of land which proved quite productive were cleared.
Franklin Gunn had four brothers. John, Alexander, William and James and three sisters, Janie, Kathrine and May (Cherie note: This should have been Mary; and he also had sisters Margaret and Isabella - married John Richmond), all of whom resided in West Finley township and surrounding sections in later years.
Franklin Gums was married to Mary McDaniel and to this union were born eleven children, five of whom are living as noted above. Mrs. Gunn died several years ago and later Mr. Gunn was united in marriage with Margaret McDaid. for several years Mr. and Mrs. Gunn had resided in Burnsville.
Mr. Gunn had followed farming all his life at which he was successful. He never held office being of modest disposition, and refusing to accept the slightest notice in this line. He was and old line Democrat, which was displeased for the past two years over the effusion movement in which fellow members of his party engaged.
For many years he had been a member of the Campbellite or Christian Church. He fast became a member of the Chapel church near Burnsville and in later years transferred his membership to the Beham Christian church, which was much more convenient to his home at the time.
