William J. Fife Passes Away in His 82d Year --- Veteran of Civil War Succumbs to Pneumonia at Son’s Home Near Bethel ---

WILLIAM JAMES FIFE, one of the oldest and most highly respected citizens of the Bethel region, died at the home of his son Frank, at Fifeshire, at 3:40 this morning, after a little more than a week’s illness. Mr. Fife was born in September, 1841, near Mont Clair, and had spent his entire life in that section. He was in his 82d year. He had followed farming all his life and lived at Orchard Stop until the death of his wife, a few years ago, since which time he made his home with his son, Frank. During the Civil War he enlisted in the 62d Pennsylvania Volunteers and served with distinction, serving thru the war without a wound. At the close of the war he returned home and resumed his occupation as a farmer. He was remarkably preserved and active until stricken with influenza on Tuesday of last week. From the very start of his illness little hope was entertained of his recovery, and his death had been expected for several days. He united with the Bethel Presbyterian Church when a young man and for 48 years had been a member of the session.

For over 40 years he had been clerk of session. He is survived by three sons, FRANK, a farmer and contractor; SAMUEL, farmer and stock dealer, Orchard Stop, and WILLIAM, of Oakdale, who is connected with the Pittsburgh Coal Company, and one daughter, MRS. JOHN McCABE of Houston. He is also survived by 26 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He is Laslo survive by two brothers, THOMAS FIFE of Thompsonville, and MORGAN FIFE of Canonsburg, and three sisters, MRS. ELLA MATTHEWS, MRS. GEORGE D. McNUTT and MRS. R. C. POTTS, all of Canonsburg.

Funeral services will be held at Bethel Presbyterian Church Sunday at 12 o’clock.
